Will Nano be broken if PC is Shutdown w/ nano still connected to USB???

I really hate it when I leave my nano to charge and then when my brother uses the pc and after there the pc is off with my nano still connected!!! GRRR
when I turn it on windows won't start yet unless I remove it during the start up phase (the blac screen with all those white text info.)
so I am asking if this will affect my nano in case someone truns off the pc w/o removing the ipod in the remove USB device???
thanks

think of it this way: if you are going to take a HDD out of your computer, you want to turn it off first. the same applies to an ipod. if for some reason it won't disconnect, another option is to turn the computer off. no, it shouldn't hurt anything, just make sure when the computer is back on, plug it back in to make sure it still reads.

  • Dell Inspiron 8600 freezes on startup when iPod Nano is connected to USB

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop and an iPod Nano. If I plug the iPod into the USB port and THEN startup the computer, the computer will reach the screen where it identifies the BIOS version, the one with the white progress bar on black background. The progress bar gets to around 95%, and then freezes forever.
The only remedy is to force shutdown (hold down power switch), unplug the Nano, and restart the computer. If I do it that way, everything is fine.
Is there any known issues with starting up Dell laptops with the iPod connected? Is it trying to boot from my iPod or some silliness like that? Any help is appreciated!
My machine's BIOS is up-to-date, as is my iPod software.

    Hi aj,
Niel's hit on it with the posted article, but I must ask the obvious question: Why start it up with the nano connected at all? Do you have problems connecting after you boot up?

  • Ipod Nano (1st Gen) no longer connects at usb 2.0 speeds

I have had my nano since it was released almost 2 years ago. When I got it, it connected to my computer (running Win XP) at usb 2.0 speeds, however about 5 months ago, it stopped connecting at this speed and only connected at 1.1 speeds causing very slow updates. I assumed it was my old computer and lived with it. However I just bought a new computer, running windows vista, that has all usb 2.0 ports. I finally tried to connect my ipod this week (I waited until the new ITunes was released), and on the new computer it still connects at USB 1.1. I get the message in windows that says it could operate faster if connected to a usb 2.0 port. I have tried all usb ports on the computer, tried restoring the ipod to factory settings, rebooted, etc, but it still only connects at the slow speed. All other devices I have connect at USB 2.0, except the Ipod. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue? Does anyone know a solution?

Yes you have a one year warranty from the date of purchase from Apple. Go to this link and on the bottom right hand side it will ask you to enter your serial number and will tell you if you are still under warranty. http://www.apple.com/support/
If you are you can take it to a Apple store, or request service online here http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
If it is out of warranty you can google a third party service provider and get it serviced out of warranty. There are two that I know of that provide free diagnostic service. You only pay for shipping and they will tell you what is wrong and what it will cost to fix. They are ifixipodsfast.com and ipodmods.com but there are others also (I just have no experience with them) Good luck and as was stated it should charge from your usb. and just for grins, look at the docking connector on your ipod and see if there is any obstruction that is obvious.

  • Will jobs start again after a db shutdown?

    Hi all,
    sorry for this newbye question...
Suppose a job having a next_date for execution at 04/04/2007 04:00, at 04/04/2007 03:00 the db is shutted down and at 04/04/2007 06:00 is started up.
    I repeat the scedule again:
    04/04/2007 03:00 - Db shutdown
04/04/2007 04:00 - Job should run, but db is down
    04/04/2007 06:00 - Db startup
??/??/???? ??:?? - When will the job run?
What happen at the job, when will it be executed, will it be broken and failures increased?
    thanks a lot
    aldo

    Hi Aldo,
The setting of restartable doesn't matter in this case.
If the database is down when the job is supposed to run then the job will run when the database comes back up.
There is one exception, if you set schedule_limit to a non-NULL value and the
    database_start_time - requested_job_start_time > schedule_limit
then that job run will be skipped (the schedule_limit is an upper limit on how late the scheduler is allowed to run the job).
The restartable flag only comes into play when a job fails or the database is shutdown while running a job. The restartable flag says whether the job should be restarted immediately ( or as soon as the database starts up again).
Hope this helps. There is a forum dedicated to the Scheduler here

Numbers documents from iOS need Numbers 3.2 on a Mac to open. And Numbers 3.2 requires Mavericks. If you are using Mavericks you can get Numbers 3.2 from the Mac App Store. It will be free IF you have Numbers 2 (iWork '09) installed. Otherwise you must buy it.
Your other option is to send the Numbers file as an Excel file via e-mail to yourself to open with an earlier version of Numbers.

    Hi,
    Try resetting your iPod:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430.
If that doesn't work, try restoring it:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414.
If all else fails, you will have to place your iPod in Recovery Mode:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808.
    Hope this helps!

  • IPod Nano (4th Generation) switches on when connected to USB power - shows Menu & hangs (unresponsive to click wheel) - deems off after 5-sec - Switches off after disconnecting from USB Power - syncs with iTunes - Tried 5R's - Problem still persists

    1. The iPod Nano (4th Generation - 8GB) switches on, only when connected to USB power by showing apple logo and displays Menu options thereafter..
    2. However, I can not access Menu as it is unresponsive to click wheel. As a result it is inaccessible to any further use,
    3. NOTE: it displays "Battery Fully charged" icon on the screen without any "Lock" icon.
    4. After  5-sec to 10-secs the screen deems off.. i.e. goes to sleep mode.. And thereafter would probably remain like that (sleeeping) for eternity!!!!
    5. It Switches off after WITHOUT DISPLAYING any Apple Logo immediately after disconnecting from USB Power.
    6. In other words, it can be switched on only through USB power in spite of battery being fully charged.
    7. Interestingly, it syncs with iTunes. It is recognised in iTunes (Latest version 11+).. Displays on screen all commands Like.. syncronising, connecting, connected,
    8. Allows to add Music, videos like a normal ipod & displays all status information in iTunes.
    9. Read Trobleshooting & Tried all 5R's. Registered, Resetted, updated & Restored to iOS 1.0.2
    10. It is now displaying to select Language in place of Menu options, with no access through click wheel, centre button whatsoever... Problem still persists
KINDLY GUIDE ME THE SOLUTION. APPRECIATE YOUR RESPONSE in advance...

  • Nano Not Connecting to Windows

I think i have tried everything now. i did all the troubleshooting on Apple.com/support, tried resetting my nano
re-installing all of the software. i just cannot get my computer or even Itunes to recognize that my nano is
there. 1 time my nano said do not disconnect for the whole time it was plugged up but after that i cannot
even get it to say that. i have checked device manager, plug and play, my USB ports (which are 2.0). I
tried disabling my firewall. and putting the nano into disk mode. nothing i do can get it to recognize that
the nano is connected to my computer. the battery is fully charged and everything seems to be working properly
sometimes when i re-install the software it will say Error-1603 cannot install. but i downloaded the new version
of it and it installed fine. but it still does not sync with my ipod. i have a rather good knowledge of computers
and have tried everything that i can think of. my computer will not even recognize it as a portable hard-drive.
nothing shows up in the device manager or disk management. or in the control panel. my plug and play may
not be recognizing it but as far as i know everything (with maybe the exception of my plug and play) is
working. whenever i restart my computer it says do not disconnect for a few seconds and then it dissapears.
so i know that the usb port that it is plugged into is working.

    Jason,
Just a thought, have you tried any other USB devices to determine if your PC recognizes them?

iPod touches or any iDevices from Apple sync only to one computer. If you sync to a different computer, all your music will be replace with the music from the new computer's iTunes. If the music were purchased from iTunes, you can re-download them again otherwise the music on iPod touch will be deleted. Do you have iTunes backup?

  • Nano: Only works when directly connected to USB despite being FULLY charged

Hello all! This is my first topic/thread so I'm unsure if this is the correct spot to post this so please let me know. My issue concerns my Nano 8GB inability to play once fully disconnected from the USB/computer. This past week i noticed after having added some music that my battery indicator was on empty even after being charged for hours; i've never had charging problems with my unit before so I decide to reconnect it and let it charge overnight but to no avail. Once i remove the ipod from the computer the upper righ hand batt indicator was still showing empty; one day though the batt indicator actually had some life showing a sliver of "red" as to let me know there was some charge but a very low one so i decided on reconnecting it for another evening. Keep in mnd that despite the indicator showing empty i was able to play music/movies for a few days straight with no problems leading me to believe that its charging system was fine but that some type of glitch or software error was to blame for the indicator showing nothing.
But suddenly while listening to music the next day the ipod stopped playing and showed me a warning screen "Connect To Power" via a yellow triangle exclamation symbol right next to the BIG BATTERY symbol u get in the middle of the screen, and then shut itself off. From this point on my Ipod has not regained its ability to play independently and is confined to being connected via USB @ all times if I want to enjoy any of its content. Basically it can't run on its own anymore, however when i plug it back to the USB all my music/movies are accesible through iTunes and play w/out problems. Even when I hit "safely remove hardware" and the ipod ends synchronizing with the computer but is still hooked up to the port it will work in my hand normally without issues as it always has. It even shows me the little battery indicator on the upper right side fully green w/ the usb symbol in the middle recognizing its still hooked up to the USB port while I listen to my media; but IT MUST BE CONNECTED via USB cable for it to do anything at all once its removed all bets are off and my ipod won't work.
Also you know how after one "safely remove drive E" your Ipod basically SNOOZES if connected but not in use, well the screen that pops up is the Battery Life Screen where the BIG BATTERY symbol I saw in the WARNING Screen tells u how much u got left. Well guess what mine says whenever plugged into the USB port: CHARGED with the indicator nice and full of GREEN. But again once i remove that USB cable the ipod goes black, tells me I need to "connect to Power" and won't turn on or play music or even let me reset it; its like my Ipod has become a Phetus being kept alive by its Umbilical Cord.
I don't know if I've explained myself clearly but honestly i've been trying to read up on this type of issue EVERYWHERE but I can't seem to find any other cases like this one. I mean if its the battery wouldn't the ipod be completely unable to work even while its plugged in to the computer? This is very bizarre
an seek all the help & expertise u guys have to offer. If theres something you don't quite get please let me know and i'll try to break it down further. Thanks and i anxiously await your responses...
    RECAP
Nano small battery indicator showed it was empty despite being fully charged
Nano won't work unless plugged in via USB cable
Will work perfectly through Itunes and independently but must be plugged in
Battery Indicator Screen says battery fully charged
Once unplugged Warning Screen pops up automatically, stating "Connect To Power"
    which shuts off the ipod.

Yes, once I 'safely remove from drive' the ipod works normally I can listen to my media, change settings and even reset it by pressing MENU+center button. During resetting it goes straight onto the screen showing the Apple logo and then retuns back to automatically synchronizing with the computer (since its still plugged in to the usb port) and i can go into itunes and play my media via laptop. What type of servicing are you referring to? Should I try buying a new battery or sending it to apple so they can figure it out?
Two things which happened yesterday which were sorta demoralizing:
1 After unplugging my ipod from USBport the screen would automatically go black, right after I would hit the PLAY button and would get the "Connect To Power" Warning screen but under very Low Backlight before shutting itself down again. You could hardly see it, but now it doesn't pop up at all or give me any type of warning just a BLACK screen, so the only way of getting the unit to do anything is via usb connection.
    2. Also the day before I had fooled my ipod into being connected to the usb even though I was pulling the usb cable very slowly from underneath its adapter; sorta letting it touch the adapter but not really hooked up to it. Well I managed to get the cable off and my Ipod to work for less than 10 seconds but I was able to scroll down the Main and Playlist menus without any lag or lack of Backlight before it went out. I tried it once more and it didn't work plus I don;t see what the benefits of doing so would be @ this point. But having said that does anyone think it could be a simple battery issue or is this harddrive related? Again the Ipod only work swhen connected to my usb & tells me its fully charged, but once unplugged it goes completely blank...
