Will new hard drive work?

One of my drives is starting to act up and I need to replace it. My Dual G4 manual says I can use 2 Ultra ATA 100 drives and 2 Ultra ATA 66 drives. It's apparent that drives have moved beyond these specs, I'm considering a Maxtor Diamond Max 10 300GB ATA-133 drive thats only $90 at Tigerdirect. Will this drive work, and will it suffer a performance hit being in only an ATA100 slot or ATA66 slot.

the vast majority if not all ATA-133 drives are backwards compatible with ATA-100 and ATA-66 so it should work fine. There may be a small performance hit but not as much as the figures would suggest. 133MBps is the maximum theoretical transfer rate but most drives don't achieve anywhere near that in burst yet alone substained data transfer.
Depending on how you intend to use the new drive it may be quicker in practice on the ATA-66 bus (assuming you only have two drives) rather than sharing the ATA-100 bus with another drive.

You can put two 2gb RAM sticks in your model 2,1 but it can only use 3,3gb. This is a hardware limitation and cannot be changed.

Hello, I've decided to upgrade the hard drive in my Mid 2009 MBP 13 inch to roughly a 500gb from 250gb. My friend has a 2011 MBP 13" and he just upgraded it to 1TB and has his 500gb 5400rpm SATA 2 and said I can have it. Will that hard drive work in my 2009 MBP without any headaches? I just want to be sure before I put it in...Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!

I think 750GB is the Max you can install in your 09 MB. ( not a 100% sure )
I've seen some people trying to install 1TB on their 09 MB and had issues.
Give it a shot, if it doesn't work, you can always exchange it for the smaller 750GB.

The drive will work perfectly in your macbook. Two weeks ago i was also thinking about buying the Hitachi Travelstar 7k200.
But afterwards i bought this one:

The WD Scorpio 250GB. Off course it´s not as fast as the Travelstar. But for me three things we´re quiet nice about this harddrive: the noise (it doesn´t make anyone) and the price (got it for 150 euro) and it consumes way less power (means better battery life).

Just thinking about upgrading my MacBook a bit, and wondering if this hard drive (which seems like a great deal) would work out in my MacBook or whether it would cause problems.
This is kind of a silly question, but I don't know all that much about computers. Increasing the hard drive will just let me have more room for music, photos, etc, right? I would have to increase the memory to make it operate at a faster speed?

No. First, it's an ATA drive and the MB requires a SATA drive. Second, that drive is a 3.5 inch full-size hard drive. You need a notebook drive (2.5 inch) for the laptops. See the these New Egg notebook drives.
Adding a larger hard drive will provide increased storage capacity. Adding RAM will not make the computer run faster. Adding RAM simply enables you to run more applications simultaneously without the slowdown caused by virtual memory.
Installing a hard drive in a MacBook is a DIY project. You can find instructions at http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/MacBook/Hard-Drive. You will need a very small (#00) Phillips screwdriver and a T8 Torx driver. You should find them at a hardware store.
As for whether your local Apple store will install a drive you purchase on your own is something you will need to ask them.

Do you have a Snow Leopard DVD? If so then you can use it to prep the drive. You are going to need an external enclosure in order to get everything done:

Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive. Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure. You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
      mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
      the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
      is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the
      Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
      the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
      (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
      GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and
      wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
      drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
      window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
      Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
      return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
      hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
      Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
      Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume. Click on the Restart button. You should boot from the new drive. Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

Will this hard drive work on a T43?

My T43 hard drive (Fujitsu MHV2060AH) went kaput.I bought a new one, a 120Gb WD drive, just to find out T43s have a very limited list of hard drives they like. So now I have to return this drive.
So, I can't find my old hard drive model, but I found a similar one on newegg - Fujitsu MHV2060AT (http://is.gd/rFl8).
Does anyone know if this hard drive will work on my T43?

When you said that it will not work with your T43 do you mean that you bought a SATA HDD rather than an IDE? If you have an IDE and you are just getting the ERROR 2010, saying that your HDD is not supported and that you might need to update the firmware or something, you don't have to worry, as it should still work. You will just have to decide whether you can stand the error message everytime you boot. I really doubt you will be able to find the old supported HDDs for the T43.

My take would be to keep the replacement drive under 200GB. Friend installed a 250GB to work fine for a while and later on the system reliability went out the window. Go figure...
This may sound confusing but it isn't really. Never copy jumper "placements" from drive A to B. Get the original setting, like Cable Select if so configured, and set the new drive to that by its own jumper diagram configurations. Mistakes here can cripple a new drive if you follow what I am saying. It is possible for drive A to have a different placement of jumpers locations that may not be compatible with drive B. You just never know when a drive manufacture may make a change.
Double check on prices and pay attention to shipping costs when selecting a new drive. Shop around in other words. Where I live Staples will beat or already be lower than others so what is saving me is the shipping costs and the trouble of being home (or even up) when delivery is scheduled.
Last thing that I MUST add is stay completely away from Western Digital HDs. I added them to my list along with Norton products as Mac avoidables.

Didn't you previously startup from the optical drive with that same Mac OS X installation disk, to install the OS on you new drive?
You could try the 10.1 disk as a startup test, but since you have 10.4 installed, you should not do anything with it once it starts up (except shutdown).
Can you kindly give me step by step instructions for booting up from disk.
The three methods for starting from the optical drive are:
Startup or restart with the C key held down.
Startup or restart and hold down the Option key. This will give you Startup Manager. If a bootable disk is in the optical drive, select it and continue.
Startup normally. Open System Preferences Startup pane. Select the disk in the optical drive and click Restart.
The drive itself seems to be functioning properly. Did you mean I should be able to boot up from the disk to insure the drive is working 100% ?
I was just saying that if your hard drive is working and you are able to boot from the CDROM drive, then the jumper setting you are using is fine. If the CDROM is working, but not able to boot, it could be caused by the jumper setting. But after I wrote that, I realized you must have already booted from the optical drive before to do the OS installation.
