Will new imac support DDR3L memory

My new iMac came with 8GB of memory and I want to upgrade it to 32GB. Does Ivy Bridge support the lower voltage chipsets like what OWC sells. I have usedOWC memory on my MBP's for years without a problem. Suggestions??

What does OWC say about DDR3L in your iMac?

  • Will new iMac support an additional Thunderbolt 27" display?

I'm thinking about getting a new iMac 27", but would like to have dual monitors.  Will the new iMac support an additional 27" Thunderbolt monitor?

The additional TBD is thinner and a different hight. I believe the stand alone display will reflect more background light and look different than the iMac.
I am weighting for the stand alone displays to match the 27' iMac in both height and reflectiveness

  • Will the new iMac support FCStudio2?

This may be a dumb question, but I did a search on the forums, and they talked about only G4s and G5s.
The Apple web site confuses me; it says "An AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card" is needed, but the iMac has an "ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory."
Does that mean FCStudio2 can be installed only on a G5, where you can install different graphics cards?

Hi, I have had pretty good experiences using the new iMac (2.4GHZ, 20" screen, 2GB memory, ATI 256MB videocard) with FCStudio2. Below details my experience.
Final Cut Pro: works great, everything is pretty smooth and it hasn't failed me yet (most likely you will be limited to working with DV footage however, as you can't add a standalone capture card for HD).
DVD Studio Pro: works great with no problems
Compressor: when I am doing large batch exports, it is noticeably slower than my tower (to the extent that I just do them overnight).
Motion: works fine if you work with files with a small duration; doesn't run as smooth as my tower
    Soundtrack Pro: works great
Color: I've been tinkering with this program. Seems to run fine, but I am no expert in it.
    Hope this helps!

  • New iMac supports dual display!

I think the single coolest thing about the new iMacs is that it now supports Extending the desktop, rather than just mirroring it, to an external display. I can't believe more noise wasn't made about this feature in the keynote. This is huge and will without a doubt cause me to switch to a Mac for my next purchase!
    Sweeet!

you could easily enable extended desktop on the g5 version of imac. i believe the software that enables it is called screen spanning doctor and its free

  • Do New iMacs support 24bit / 192 kHz sound?

I have a new 27 inch iMac from Oct 2010. I use optical out to a receiver that supports 24 bit / 192 kHz sound decoder. I want to know if I play a sound file that is 24 / 192 will the iMac be able to output this to be decoded by the receiver.

Ok, I don't know what that is. Normally it only goes up to 24 bit. Also, I just realized, how many channels and what bit streams like DD 5.1 etc does it support to get the audio out to the receiver?

  • Does the new imac support 3D movie play?

I was wondering if the newest iMac can play 3D movies, like the new 3d blue ray/3D tv can, anyone knows about this?

There were two sources. One was the Apple iMac descriptions themselves and the other is the much more detailed info available on everymac.com .
Everymac.com clearly states the current iMacs support audio output from the miniDisplayPort, however when I rechecked Apple's website today, there is no mention of it in the current iMac tech specs.
So, this is, at a minimum, inconsistent information, and doesn't actually confirm one way or another whether or not the current iMacs support audio over the mDP.
On the other hand, Apple have 2 KB documents about this topic - TS3065 and HT4241 which state that audio output from the mDP is only supported on:
    MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010)
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)
    iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009)
    iMac (27-inch, Late 2009)
    Mac mini (Mid 2010)
    MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010)
Interesting that the latest iMacs are not mentioned, but I believe both articles predate the latest models.
I understand this is not as definitive as I believed it was when I wrote my original post.
What mDP-HDMI adapter are you using and what device are you connecting to?

  • Will new iMac beat old Powermac???

I've had my powermac dual G5 1.8 since 2004 and am thinking of uprading to a new high-end intel-iMac with leopard.
My main reasons are that my Mac has become really sluggish of late especially with multiple application open and viewing video.
I mostly use my computer for photoshop, watching video and the internet.
I have 512MB ram and a dual 1.8GHZ CPU, the new imac i''m interested in is a 2.8GHZ dual core processor and 2GB RAM, will this give me enough power and performance to not have the beachball all the time when running multiple applications or is a powermac, even an old one, still a faster machine that an iMac??
also does dual 1.8ghz mean two 1.8ghx chips or 1.8 in total, because it it's 2 1.8ghz chips then wouldn't that still be faster (combined) than the new iMac, i'm confused???

That's the problem. That is not much over the minimum RAM required for Tiger. You should have at least 2GB RAM. Also, be sure there is plenty of space on your hard drive.

You have two 1.8 GHz processors. The Intel iMac also has two processors, but they are on one chip. Each processor is 2.0 to 2.8 GHz, depending on which model iMac you get. You should get it with 4 GB RAM.

  • Will the iMac support a usb 3.0 hub

I would like to get a 4 + port hub and thought I'd go ahead anf get the USB 3.0 but I'm not sure my MAC can handle it.  I have all 2.0 devices now but am thinking about the future.  I have the iMAC Quad Core i7.

Apple currently doesn't support USB 3.0 so there is no advantage to getting a USB 3.0 hub. However the hub should work but at 2.0 speeds.

  • Will my Imac support usb 3.0

I need to purchase an external HD and most of what I see out there is now usb 3.0.  Will they function with my three year old Imac (intel)?

They should, but only at USB 2 speed of course.

  • New iMac bi-directional Displayport -- supports HDMI?

I notice the new iMac supports video input through the Mini DisplayPort (so you can use the iMac as a second monitor). Now I've seen Mini DisplayPort>HDMI converters for about $20 on monoprice.
So could I connect an HDMI device (like Blu-Ray player) to view on the new iMac?

According to this it seems so with the right cable.

I cannot help with your Maya problem as I have not tried to run it on an Intel machine yet but I may be able to help with some of your questions.

If it says you do not need the update then you do not need the update. The easiest way to know is to check your software updates and if your computer needs any firmware updates it will tell you. You can also check in your Utilities folder and if there are any Firmware Update installers there as that is where it saves to when you get it from your software updates. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307008
I would call Autodesk for support using Maya on your iMac.

  • Windows Vista 64 bit and new iMac (Penryn)

Anyone knows when the new iMacs will be "official supported" for Vista 64?
I have read that today only the Mac Pro and the MacBook Pro ( both 2008 edition) are supported. I have try to install Vista 64 on my new iMac Penryn without problem (OS) while with the Bootcamp drivers i cant go on with installation becouse i have a compatibily error message with x64. It's BIOS EFI problem? ETA for new iMac support???
    Thx all

If the Leopard DVD when inserted into Vista doesn't auto open to
    /BOOTCAMP
and, those drivers are needed first in order to install BC 2.1 (buggy for many) there is a bit torrent of BC 64-bit drivers, but they should be there.
I suspect that any Penryn series WILL be supported, but weren't/aren't ready, and that page listing Macs that are Vista 64-bit is therefore "out of date" at this point.
MS on 64-bit (while I try to find another link):

  • New iMac beach ball and performance

I recently purchased a new iMac direct from Apple.
For months I had been using a Mac Mini at work with Mac OS X 10.6.6.
My new iMac has also been updated to 10.6.6. Also, I have installed the same software on both computers. They are essentially the same.
I was very excited about my purchase since my Mac Mini at work behaved beautifully. No crashes and no beach balls. It ran like butter.
My new iMac has more memory and a newer/faster processor than the Mac Mini at work, so I expected it to be even better.
So far, however, that has not been the case. I don't see any noticeable improvement in how my iMac runs vs the Mac Mini. Worse, my iMac is frequently hit with beach balls that routinely last 10 to 30 seconds per incident. It has been extremely frustrating. Also, the new iMac crashes quite often, which really surprised me. I have to routinely force quit apps and reboot which almost never happens at work.
Any ideas why the older computer seems to perform way better than my brand new one?
    Thanks!

    Update:
I don't know if this will be useful, but I'm documenting this for the record. Any confirmation of these observations would be most appreciated.
As a Perl programmer (a big reason why I went with iMac in the first place) one of the very first things I did out of the box with my new computer was dig into the terminal and install some Perl modules with CPAN.
I think I did this the very same night I first turned my iMac on. And I can't remember if there was ever a time when I didn't have the beach ball problem.
Eventually I was unable to install new modules or even run CPAN at all. The computer gave me a "permission denied" response even when I was logged in as the root user. I finally learned to solve this problem by going to the Disk Utility and fixing permissions.
I've been using my computer for 30 minutes now and happened to notice I haven't had any beach balls yet. That's a very rare thing for me.
So I'm wondering if the beach ball issues I've been experiencing were related to the stuff I did with CPAN or not.
Anyone ever experienced anything like this?
In the meantime I'll keep an eye on things and report back later with additional observations. Thanks!

  • IMovie HD6 on new iMac's??
