  • My iTunes library will not open because it was created with a newer version

When I try to open iTunes I get the following error message.
"The file iTunes.itl cannot be read because it was cretaed by a newer version of iTunes.
This happened after I downloaded version 7 in September. I can see that my library is intact but cannot get it to open. Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Greg

Update it seems to be version 6.05 which is showing up when I check via my Computer.
i've seen this happen every now and then if an install doesn't go through properly ... the library files get updated, but the program files don't get touched.
let's try another itunes 7.0.2.16 install. we'll take a few additional explicit precautions this time.
download and save a fresh copy of the itunes installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.

if that install goes through properly, does itunes launch for you again?

  • Need to recover old playlists, old iTunes library will not open because it was created by a newer version?

I have a Mac mini, have installed iTunes on it and want to find some old playlists that were lost.  I have several 'iTunes Libraries' with different dates but I cannot open any of them becauseit says they were created with a newer version of iTunes.  Please help!

Somewhere in your process you ended up with an earlier version of iTunes than was used last with the library. iTunes 10.6.3 is the highest version that will run under OSX 10.5.8
    iTunes 10.6.3.25 - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1575
If you had an earlier version and still want that version I am not sure how to go about this.  My iTunes library file does not say it was created with a particular version, although I admit I have not looked at the .xml copy to see if it is buried in the file itself.  Apple only has a very limited number of iTunes versions openly posted, though you can still find just about any version if you look in the right places.  You would have to kind of start low and work your way up to where you want to be since once you open a library with a version it cannot be reverted to an earlier version (make backups first).

  • I can't open itunes because it says "it cannot be opened because it was created by a newer version of itunes." I've downloaded newest of Windows and itunes and it still won't work--help, please.

Hi--I can't get itunes to open because it says "the file cannot be opened because it was created by a newer version of itunes." I have installed newest versions of Windows & itunes recently, as the troubleshooter instructed, to no avail...Help!!!

This error prevents iTunes from launching. The library file was modified to work with the newer iTunes version, so it is no longer compatible with the previous version. The good news, however, is that Apple does backup the iTunes library file into a subdirectory that you can use to revert back to the previous version.
To recover a previous version of the iTunes Library.itl file, use the following steps:
Open up your My Documents\My Music folder.
We will first backup the current version. Rename iTunes Library.itl to something like iTunes Library.itl.bak.
Go into the My Documents\My Music\Previous iTunes Libraries folder.
You may see several files that start with iTunes Library and have a date included in the name. Copy the newest file in the folder.
Go back to the My Documents\My Music and paste the file from the previous step.
Rename the new copied file to iTunes Library.itl.
Your library should now be restored to the previous version of iTunes, and you should no longer receive the message.

  • I get this message "can not read because it was created by a newer version" I restored twice at different dates, uninstalled and installed again.. But nooo still there.

I get this message, "can not read because it was created by a newer version" I restored twice at different dates and uninstalled all apple stuff and reinstaled it again. Still nothing   Help John

That message is usually a sign that you tried to roll back to an earlier build of iTunes, but occasionally I've seen it connected to a new upgrade. This technique should fix things.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • ITunes will not open because library was created by newer version???

I am still using iTunes 9.2.1 and am not ready to go with v10.
I tried to open iTunes and got the message:
The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.
I did notice that the last time I opened it, it looked a little different but went on with a sync of my 1st.gen AppleTV and then closed out.
I have not downloaded and upgraded to the newer version 10.
I have never had higher than 9.2.1 so I couldn't help but wonder if in some way I am being forced to go the newer v10.
    Harold

    I have discovered this:
I could not open iTunes as I previously stated in the normal method.
However, it will open when I created a quicktime movie from iMovies and prepared it for iTunes. When I click on the quicktime movie to play it will open iTunes to play the movie. That is when I see the different icons, etc.
I had something called ‘Ping’ to disable because I care nothing about that.
It does not look the same as I am use to with 9.2.1.
I went to the file menu> about> and low and behold it comes up ITUNES 10.
Remember, I have not downloaded ver.10 at any point so it must have come through a back door somehow.
So, I looked in my applications to see if iTunes app has changed. No, it still shows 9.2.1. I did a search in spotlight for iTunes 10 and nothing shows up. Go figure!
I am not a happy camper at this time and need to hear from Apple about this.
I am not ready to go to v10 and want an explanation.
I am not ready to go with v10 because I wanted to see how it effects my 1st. gen. AppleTV.
I don’t want to loose all the downloads I have on a device that I really like.
The new AppleTV has no hard drive and thus stores nothing as I understand it.
I have many TV programs purchased and stored from the History, Travel and Natl. Geographic, etc. channels.

  • TS1424 I can't open iTunes. Get error message "the file iTunes library.itl cannot be opened because it was created by a newer version of iTunes"

I cannot open itunes.  Getting error message: "the file iTunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes"
What do I need to do so I dont lose all my loaded music, etc.?
    Thanks

If you still have an issue you may have to see about using the iTunes version (application) included with Snow Leopard 10.6 from the installer or an another one if available online, and see if that will install.
Sometimes you may have uninstall the bits left in your system by the earlier (or later) iTunes installers; as they all leave a trace and these can stop a different version of iTunes from being installed.

  • I tried installing itunes but i keep on receiving the message "itunes library.itl" cannot be opened because it was created by a newer version of itunes. i tried to the troubleshooting guideline outlined in KB article TS5376 without success

How do i install Itunes on my windows(7) PC? i followed the guidelines issued outlined by Apple in KB TS5376 but i keep getting the message, the file "itunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. what steps must i follow to install?

If you've already installed the latest version then the message may be a sign of a corrupt library. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.

  • Itunes wont open because itfile was created in a newer version?

    Hi all,
I tried to download the new iphone software yesterday through itunes.
It told me it was downloading a new version plus a new safari.
It got half way through and the itunes part had a red X through it and didnt continue, instead it completed the safari one and once complete told me to restart my pc which i did.
When i logged back in it said itunes was broken and i should run the repair tool. I tried and it said it failed and that I had to install the whole of itunes again!
I went on the apple website and installed itunes for windows 7 64bit. Once this was complete i tried to open itunes and i now get a message saying that the file (or library) was created in a newer version so cannot open!??
How can this be the case when I have just downloaded the newest version from the apple website!!!?
If any can help that would be great as im left with no way to back up my phone or get the new ios5 on it!!
    I have windows 7.
    Thanks

I did kinda the same thing....What I was told was that because the server is getting hammered right now, the itunes didnt install correctly ( even though it looks like it did ).  The only thing to do is uninstall and reinstall until it works.  I was told it may be at least a week with all the new phones coming out today... My phone doesnt work at all now - I have to take it to a store to get it back to factory settings and when the servers slow down and I can reinstall itunes correctly, then I can get all my contacts and apps back.

  • My Itunes library will not open becuase of being created with a newer version

I did create the library with a newer version of itunes, i did this so that i could drag songs from a folder i had on this computer earlier. Now it will not open. I need help quick cause i would love to be able to drag these songs over s they will be on my iphone. HELP!

    Let me get this right...
You have an iTunes library which you are now trying to use with a version prior to one that you were using, correct? Why?
Why don't you use the most up-to-date version of iTunes?
If you try using version 10.0 (for example), then anything iTunes has sorted out using 10.5 will not be recognised by 10.0, which is why you get the message.  Apple's advice is to always use the most up-to-date version of iTunes.

  • Itunes library can't be opened because it was created with a newer version

my brother downgraded itunes from 7 to 6.0.4 and my library is no longe able to be read. but he was able to get it to work on his login. what do i do.
    Josh

I too have fallen foul of the awful iTunes, version 7, which gives me distortion very quickly after starting a track, and seems to be missing the nice equalizer. The only advice I can offer for the future is keep a copy(say burnt on DVD) of all iTunes software versions. Also periodically burn a copy of the iTunes music folder which is usually in the MyMusic folder, onto DVD (or several DVD's), or put it onto a separate external hard drive if you have one. (However, don't have the hard drive connected when you upgrade iTunes software, as it looks in all places for iTunes files and as has happened with version 7, changes their format.) Then if you need to re-install, you can put a previous iTunes version back, and install the earlier version of iTunes music folder back. Fortunately, as I have just upgraded to a new computer, I had done this to move my music to the new machine. I know it is wise after the event, but they do say make back-ups! Usually, we do not expect Apple to make such a foulup of their software. Version 6 seems about as good as it gets and works perfectly with the Audigy board on my new machine. I hope for everyone sake Apple sort this out quickly!
