Will not read discs with photo's

If I insert a disc with loads of photo's on it the MBP tells me I have inserted a blank CD? If I load the CD into my friends MBP it see's the photo's fine. We even tried making a fresh disc using his MBP, that didn't work. The drive on my MBP is the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D: and it plays DVD's and music CD's just fine. Not sure if I had set something wrong in Preferences in the past without realising.
The CD had originally been created on a PC and I had thought it was a compatibility problem until it worked on the other MBP. Please help if you can
Fudzy

Rod,
it's a data disc that I created, I transferred some folders full of photo's from an SD card using the PC, when I inserted it into the MBP it just came up saying you have inserted a blank disc, what would you like to do? I have had the same problem with a disc full of photo's that a company sent me, again just folder full of photo's. Both discs work on the PC and also my friends MBP. I have my preferences set to ask what to do when a blank CD is inserted, I will change it to open finder to see if this works.

  • PC will not read disc which came with N95 8GB Phon...

Upgraded to N95 8GB. So far so good, then !!!. Came back from hols to link with PC to find that the CD drive and DVD drive will not read the disc which came with the phone. PC will still read other discs but not the Nokia disc. What is the disc format and can I get what is on the disc elsewhere?

It's probably just a damaged disc. You can download the PC Suite software from www.nokia.com/pcsuite, as far as I know you can't get replacement CDs.

  • Flashing question mark/will not read disc.

So, I've seen other discussions here and tried to apply them to my own problem, but nothing seems to work so far. If anyone can offer any help, this would be great.
I was updating routine software and it asked if I wanted to restart now. I chose yes and it shut down, restarted to the flashing question mark. I tried restarting by holding down the power and c key many times. I know I need to install Mac OS X Install Disc 1, but my Macbook is not reading the disc. I tried putting in disc 2 as well but it doesn't recognise this one either.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Hold the option key on startup. If a boot manager doesn't appear there may be hardware issues.
If a boot manager appears but you can't see a CD icon there may be a problem with your optical drive (or media).
    Good Luck!

  • Week old macbook (white) will not read discs and ejects after a few seconds

Hello, my mother got her macbook a week ago, and while I was at school this week she hardly used it. I've come home today with my office mac 2008 disc and while trying to install I learned her macbook would rather spit the disc out than read it (does not even show up on the desktop). I know for a fact that the disc is not the problem, seeing as I just loaded it on my macbook earlier this week. I'm about an hour and a half away from an apple store so visiting is sort of an inconvenience. However Best Buy is about 10 minutes away, but I'm not sure if my apple care insurance will work there. Any ideas on how to fix it? Thanks in advance guys.

Apple has a 14-day return policy, so if the MacBook is only one week old I think it would be worthwhile to make the hour and a half journey to get a replacement, if necessary. For me, that would be better than taking it in for repair. Of course, while you're at the Apple Store they will take a look at it and perhaps they can quickly correct the problem rather than replace the MacBook.

  • Mini will not read DVDR with adhesive labels.....

Yet, the same disc without a label, works fine.
Printable DVDR's work also. (both are the same Taiyo's)
I've tested over a dozen disc's, half have the adhesive labels.

    Hi wheezer1-
Labels actually tend to throw the center of gravity off on a disc. Because it is not spinning in a perfect circle it causes problems. Most drives are able to compensate for this by reducing themselves to a lower playback speed, but some cannot adjust. You have one of those drives.
When they come off inside of the drive the tend to be a huge problem as well. The drives tend to be in a warm spot and the adhesive on the label often softens simply by having the disk in the drive.
Boece offers sage advice regarding an external drive.

DVD drive will not read DVD with photos saved on it. Also will not run system discs. Gives mesage "please insert a disc into Drive D. It plays CDs fine so appears to be working.
    Please advise - thank you.

I too have this same problem.  Posted about it in another thread then saw this.  I hope there is a fix.

  • EMac ejects CDs, will not read them

    Hello!
I have an eMac that, it seems whatever I do, will not read discs. The disk I am working with is a Leopard install disc/DVD, but it is not the only one that does this problem. It appears to spin for a few seconds in the CD/DVD drive, then ejects it. I have tried getting it to work in Safe Mode, resetting the PRAM, and currently I am attempting to clean the drive using a compressed air duster.
My eMac, bought from eBay many years ago, is an educational model, with 1 GHz processor, an upgraded 1 GB of RAM (it appears to have originally come with 512 MB, according to the DVD drive door), and the ATI Radeon 9200 Graphics.
Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

That indeed is a special eMac version sold only to educational institutions. The good news is that it was based on the newer USB 2.0 logic board and, in spite of Apple's outdated specs, can handle up to 2GB RAM and, of course, has USB 2.0. The ATI 9200 video chipset clearly makes it as variant what Apple called a "eMac (USB 2.0)" with the model identifier "PowerMac6,4." The commercial model had a 1.25gHz processor; the 1gHz was used in the edu-model to reduce costs.
The bad news is that, although I cannot find it in the limited specs published for this special model, another cost saving measure Apple had applied in other edu-model Macs was to downgrade the optical drive, so I would not be surprised if yours has a CD or CD-R optical drive. The commercial model typically had a "Combo" drive, capable of read/write with CDs and read-only for DVDs.
The check BDAqua posted will tell you for sure.
Many 1.0 and 1.25ghz USB 2.0 models had a bad logic board problem. The affected units fell in these serial number ranges:
    G8412xxxxxx- G8520xxxxxx
    YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx
    VM440xxxxxx - VM516xxxxxx
If yours in in one of those ranges but is still working after all these years, it is probably OK.
As for the DVD instal disk, Leopard 10.5 was available on CD on special order. If you are in the US, I'd phone the central Apple Store (1-800-MY-APPLE) and ask for an operating systems specialist. Tell them you bought a DVD retail install disk but need the CD version for the older model Mac. That may still be able to arrange an exchange so you have compatible discs.
If you have a newer Mac with a working DVD-capable drive, you may be able to use FireWire Target Disk Mode to mount the eMac's hard drive on the newer Mac and then put your current install DVD in the new Mac but point the installer to the eMac. I've done that before, but I have piles of Macs from different eras.

My optical drive will not read any music cds or recognize a blank cd. it might read some data cds. what is wrong with it and how can i fix it?

The optics might be dirty. Try running a cleaning CD through it and see if that makes a difference.
If not, it will have to be replace.

    Hi All
I ahve a eMac G4 700MHz with combo drive and I'm trying to put OSX v 10.4 on to it but the combo drive will not read the disc. I can put a DVD (film)in and watch that and it will also play CD's.

iMac 17inch Duo 2GHZ   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Have got an eMac G4 as well

    Hi All
Still got the problem. I don't think its the drive,
because it plays DVD's CD's etc, even the disc's from
the Mac magazines. The DVD seems clean. I've run a
disc cleaner in the drive. Still no joy.
I can start the eMac up and it will boot up OK - OS X
10.2.8 The drive will read the DVD, as I can see the
'Max OS X Install DVD' window open up with the
install icon in the centre of the screen.
What about copying the DVD on to en external drive
and the trying to install from that. Would it work??
Thnks for your help, so far.

    well
    Hi Lee
Had exactly the same when attempting to update eMac to 10.4, very interesting.
Had to use a faster drive, as the one in my eMac was reading the 10.4 dvd too slowly.
Nothing wrong with disc, nor drive except it was too slow.
if you have a hard drive in bootable firewire external box and copying disc across to it doesnt work, (probably wont) then try borrowing a 2005 era or later dvd drive and using that in the external box.
For the purposes of the excersize, it wont matter if the dvd drive is not supported for burning (least mine isnt) so dont let that put you off having a go.
If all else fails, talk to Apple to see what their techs can do. (Apparently there is a service which supplies 10.4 on CD Rom. And they might be able to load from the DVD for you. They can put in a faster drive. Dont know about the price of that.

my somewhat old imac osx 10.5.8 with iphoto '08 will not read my RAW files from my new Nikon D800 camera - a new model on the market( 5 months or so). How can I get iphoto to read my RAW  files?

iPhoto 08 would not read RAW files from that new a camera. You need to upgrade so you can get more up-to-date version of OS X and iPhoto. Another possiblity is see if iPhoto 11 will run on 10.5.8, if so you should update. You can also attempt to run Software Update and see if it finds a newer release of iPhoto 08 that supports newer RAW formats.
