Will not turn on unless plugged in to power cord

So I have had my Macbook Pro for about 9 months now. Just today, I unplugged my laptop and it immediately turned off. I tried turning it on; I could hear the optical drive spinning up for a moment, and then the computer would suddenly turn off again.
The battery appears to be fine (I checked the charge indicator on the bottom, and it is fully charged), and my power cord seems to be ok as well.
Any help?

My MacBook Pro is just 4 months old and suddenly it would not operate without power adapter attached. Reset PMU and PRAM to no avail. Repaired permissions and did an fsck in single user mode, again to no avail. Even tried booting in 10.4.10 on external drive which was fine, except laptop would still not work with out being plugged in.
Called Apple. They asked if I had a colleague with a 15" MacBook Pro from whom I might "borrow" their battery from. Luckily, I did! I replaced my battery with hers and bingo! Laptop worked without using power adapter.
Apple is sending new replacement battery.
Another co-worker had the same thing happen to his MacBook Pro this afternoon and his laptop and mine were purchased in the same week.
Wonder if there is another batch of defective batteries springing up.

Hi there. Any luck with your phone? I'm having the same problem

  • Ipod touch will not turn on unless plugged in

My Ipod touch will not turn on, Ive plugged it in and it comes on it has a charge but as soon as I unplug it it goes black ... I have tried to restart it but there is just a black screen

    Try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order

  • Iphone will not turn on unless plugged into outlet, and then says activation needed

It worked fine before class, when I left class to check my phone, it wouln't turn on. If I plug it into the wall outlet and it shows the red battery indicating it has no charge, then goes to the apple logo screen for a few minutes before turning on and saying activation required. It was trying to make me go through the steps of activating it. If i unplug it, it will turn back off. It will not power up if I plug it into the computer, and it does not show up as a device on my computer. I have tried holding down the home and power button to reset it, and this does not work. I bought the phone when it first came out, Im trying to avoid taking it the the Apple store because it is 2 hours away.

What troubleshooting have you tried? Try a reset, hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone should reboot. If it does not, then you need to try and restore via iTunes. Try connecting the phone to the computer and iTunes and see if it is recognized. If not, you will have to force it into Recovery mode and restore. See this support document for that help. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

  • My Ipod touch will not turn on unless plugged into a dock

When I try to turn my Ipod touch on, the apple will show up and then shut down.....I found that it will turn on and work if it's plugged in on my music dock, but the second I take it off it goes dead, even though it says the battery is full.
I'd appreciate it if anyone has any suggestions!

Have you tried the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod
If you still have the problem then you likely have a hardware problem like a bad battery.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Your battery has reached the end of its life. If you have a MacBook with the removable battery you can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay.

  • Satellite M100 will not turn on unless the AC adapter is pluged in

I also am having the same problem with my Satellite M100. The computer will not turn on unless the AC adapter is pluged in and switched on at the power socket.
Any ideas as to how to fix this problem? The battery should be fine.
    B.

    > So there is no question about the battery being dead. Battery charges fine too. So obviously the battery is fine, and so are the electrical connections to/from the battery.
Well, if you are 100% sure that this is not a battery issue, then it must be something working with power supply electronic on the motherboard.
This would mean that this is a hardware problem which cannot be fixed easily but in most cases the faulty part must be replaced.
But at first the notebook should be checked with new battery even the battery can be charged properly, it could be a battery issue too
But these are only suggestions and if you want be 100% sure what part is affected then you should get in contact with an notebook technician in order to run some diagnostic tests...

  • IPod touch will not turn on unless charged

    Hi,
I have reset my iPod, tried turning off and on again dozens of times but every single time I tried to open an app or attempt to play music when it isn't connected to my computer or plugged it shuts off and will not turn back on until I charge it again.
It is 100% charged and every time I take it off charge to turn on, the startup logo appears and switches itself off.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • I asked this about a week ago and didn't get any replies.. Please help.. My macbook will not stay on unless plugged in...

My macbook will not stay on without being plugged in. I had my macbook for about 3 years and the battery had less than 200 cycles on it and the computer suddenly would not stay on unless plugged in (went from holding about 1.5 hr charge to not holding charge at all). I purchased a new battery and this battery has 118 cycles on it. It is doing the same thing. When I unplug it the computer shuts off immediately. It will not stay in sleep mode either. What should I do? I assumed that it was because I tend to leave the computer plugged in so that the cycles stay low, but after only 118 cycles? (and the new battery is less than 8 months old). Could my computer be failing to register the battery? Please help me - I don't want to have to spend another $80 on a battery. (Just so you know, I have removed the battery and made sure the connection is good but this did not help.)

If your problems with the new battery are the same as the old battery, it would seem your Mac isn't charging the battery properly.
    Perhaps it's a Magsafe/charger issue.
Read through the power section of this User tip here, try everyting, including the SMU Reset and see if that makes any difference.

We can't do too much more than that as it seems to be a hardware issue and we can't fix that too much.
