Will older macs ever work with 802.11n

Just wondering if the requirements for 11n is just a matter of buying a new network card or does the hardware also have to support it as well. I ask only because I have a G4 & G5 on my existing airport network. Have a MacBook Pro also on network. I would like all of them to be at the same speed if possible.

retouch4food, Welcome to the discussion area!
As you undoubtedly know from reading the "Help & Terms of Use" for this area, we are all Mac users like yourself. Therefore we have no special knowledge of future Apple plans or products. Also the discussion of future plans and products is forbidden in this discussion area.
But... based on past history... it is very doubtful that you will see any type of 802.11n upgrade for existing non-802.11n Macs. 802.11n depends on multiple antennas to perform it's magic and it would be very difficult to change built-in antennas in the existing Macs.
With all that said... if you want to give your non-802.11n capable Mac 802.11n access, the best solution will probably be an Ethernet 802.11n adapter.

  • Will Mavericks server ever work with windows 7?

I want to buy a new content server for our small business. Today we use snow leopard server on a Macmini and it is running stable, but we are growing and need to have a faster system and faster diskaccess and I have been looking at a solution with Macmini with thunderbolt pegasus raid. On the paper it looks really interesting, fast and it would be great for our small business! ....BUT.. I have read tons of forums with people having problems with windows compatibility.
We use both Mac and PC in a small environment and the most IMPORTANT thing we need is a shared disk that work flawlessly with both windows and Mac. I do not need lots of other osx server features as mail, ftp, etc etc...
So, Will Maverick server ever work as a content server with windows 7 professional client computers? Or should I go for a windows server (I rather not since I do not like windows)?  Or maybe a NAS-server is a better sollution for content sharing/shared workdisk?

Hi jcar, thanks for writing in!  While the Canon BJC-80 printer will not work with the Windows 7 operating system, we have plenty of printers that are fully compatible! Please feel free to click on the link below to explore some Canon alternatives; we hope this helps!

  • PC laptop card to work with 802.11n?

I'm thinking of getting the new Extreme for my wife's Late 2006 Macbook Pro, but her sister is often on the same network with her PC laptop, an Acer Aspire 5100-5022 on which the current card is only g/b. Anyone know @ how much for an upgraded card for that, and any specific recommendations?
    Thanks

I will give it a try for a second time with the installation method they suggest at Amazon. It works ok with Airport but it has a lot of issues with speed. I was with a technician at Linksys and after going through all my settings, they asked me to try with another computer. I am in the process to buy a new laptop and try it there to see where the problem lies. (he he he)
I will post an update when I try the new installation.
By the way the older adapters 802.11N can reach the 300 Mbps if the router is set in the 5Gzh/40Mhz radio band.
Many thanks for your comment and the link.

  • First time working with 802.11n, not working properly?

    Hello,
This is the first time I use 802.11n in my network there is only one AP1141 but the clients don't connect at 802.11n rates, instead they connect at data rates as low as 11 Mbps. At the begining they connect at 144 Mbps but immidiatly it decreases to 11 or 12.
Many of our wireless clients in the company are Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN.
    Any comments?

Let me know if more info needed?
    Thanks

    Hi George,
So you suggest to keep only WPA2/AES?
Regarding the coverage area keep in mind this is a really small 4 floor building with an AP floor floor, I installed only one AP1141 in my floor and kept the AP1131 in the other 3 floors, I might reduce the power to half since I don't need them working at full power unless I need coverage in the stairs in order to enforce roaming to IPPhones. Also, I don't want to bond channels on 2.4 because I read that as a recomendation in a Cisco's document (anyways I did not find how to do it in 2.4, wuld be a nice tip if you tell me how just in case) so 144 Mbps would be great as long as it works properly. I did not experienced these rate hoping until I enabled this AP1141.
And yes most of the clients that reported issues are Intel (engineering team, haven't checked the rest yet).
    Regards!

  • Will Microsoft Word ever work with OSX Lion?/Worth switching to iWork just for

I have the Microsoft Office Suite that I got with my computer, I want to know if it will work with an eventual Lion update before I consider updating to OSX Lion. I would like nothing more than to be able to update, but don't know if I'm willing to justify paying the 60 for iWork and then the 30 for LIon. Any suggestions either way would be great! I have been looking at the iWork package, but don't know how I feel about making the switch over...

Office 2008 and 2011 run under Lion, but Office 2004 and the Office 2008 installer don't.

  • Power PC G5... Will it work with 802.11n?

    I have a 20" iMac, 2.1 GHz Power PC G5, running OS 10.4.11.
Can I connect with wifi on the "n" side of the extreme base station with this computer? I currently have the 802.11g side with the older extreme base station. But I'm thinking about getting the new extreme base station and would like my imac to connect on the "n" side if possible via wifi.
Any info is greatly appreciated! Thanks

Apple has announced that Lion will only be sold as a download from the Mac App Store. Before downloading it, check with the developers of ProTools and whatever other apps you depend upon to make sure they have all been updated for Lion compatibility.

  • Will SharePoint 2010 ever work with IE 64bit or have I missed something?

Hi is there any update that might allow me to use SharePoint 2010 with IE 64bit?
Useful things like uploading multiple files and File Explorer are missing from the options when opening with 64bit IE 9 / 10

    Hi,
Some functionality in SharePoint Server 2010 requires the use of ActiveX
controls. This produces limitations on browsers which do not support ActiveX. Currently only 32-bit versions of Internet Explorer support this functionality. All other browsers have the following limitations. It is not supported in IE 64 bit as of now. Please

  • How can I get my AE to work in 802.11n mode with my dlink router?

    Hi all,
I have a dlink 655 wireless n router that I use for my network and a recent AE with 802.11n capability that I use to connect iTunes to my home stereo.
I have a mix of computers at home and only my imac has 802.11n capability. I work alone in the day so to speed things up, I change the wireless setting on my dlink router to 802.11n only mode. Normally, it is in a mixed mode of 802.11g/n for the other non n computers on the network.
My imac connects fine when in 802.11n only mode but the AE looses connection. As it is 802.11n capable, I was wondering why this happens?
I tried checking Airport Utility for a 802.11n only mode or something similar, but didn't find anything. Will the AE only work in 802.11n mode when on the 5ghz frequency? if so, that would explain why it doesn't connect with the dlink 2.4ghz router in n mode.
    Any ideas?? Thanks!

Hi. Thanks for the reply. It turns out that the router was not going into n mode because of the security I set on it. I finally figured this out and the AE did connect in n mode after all.
Well at least it's working now but I feel a little bad for posting when it was my fault!!
    Cheers!

  • Will the Cinema Display work with an older MacBook Air?

My wife has an older MacBook Air (circa late 2009) with one USB 2.0 port and one Mini Display port. Will the Cinema display work with this model Air?

It looks to me like the cinema display is a DVI connection.  If  you have a MiniDisplay port to DVI adapter that connected the MBpro to the display then you have everything you need.  (plus a DVI cable).   The MDP adapter plugs into the Thunderbolt port of the MBair.

Yes, PSE versions 6 through 12 work in 10.9, although PSE 11 is a bit buggy. All other versions are fine, including PSE 12.

It will say "green" and use less power, park its head probably, and while early units had some trouble they have evolved. Variable rpm or slower rpm also. They can be much less expenisve way to add storage.
    WD Caviar Green
    WD Green 2TB
For the system, 640GB is a nice size. Look for 64MB cache to help insure your drive is the latest models which will also say "6G SATA 3" which is fine.
    WD Caviar Black 1TB 6Gb
    WD Black Caviar 2TB
larger means higher density platter, I find the 1TB and larger Blacks to run hotter/warmer and companys want drives to be able to run warmer or with less cooling. - but for really cold drives other than SSD I have found all my WD 10K VRs to have the absolute coldest temps.
Just noticed Amazon having better prices than Newegg on 1TB - and WD and Hitachi.
Green for your external backup, for media libraries that are not high volume access, to run cool and less power. Enterprise for system and performance.  TimeMachine sometimes makes a poor backup method with some green cases.

  • Will an older "Time Capsule" work with Mountain Lion?

will an older "Time Capsule" work with Mountain Lion?

It should do. Depends on how you define an 'older' TC. As long as your SW is up to date and the TC has relatively recent Firmware etc then there shouldn't be an issue.
Are you having a problem with yours or just curious before you upgrade the OS?

    lorifromgermany,
if you have a non-Retina MacBook Pro, the following command could allow a USB SuperDrive to work with it.
Log in as an administrative user, open Terminal, run the following command within Terminal, close Terminal, and then restart your MacBook Pro:
    sudo nvram boot-args="mbasd=1"
(When it asks you for a password, enter the administrative user’s password.)
