Will OSX software Raid-0 on external drive be regonized elseware?

Are RAID setups created in Disk util recognized in other computers. Say i have 2 external drives (over eSata on my 08 mac pro) in a raid 0 from disk util, can I plug these two drives into another mac pro and have them work?
Basically, are software raid setups from disk utilily readible from all macs?

Both systems would have to have their own controllers or ports, but yes, they should move and work just the same on both.
There are Port Multiplier cases and controllers, and there are the 2 ODD ports people use, or direct connect SATA external controllers.
You can even create a RAID internal or external and move it and it will work, or change the drive bay and order of your drives, the RAID will still work and be intact.
What often doesn't work are eSATA/FW or eSATA/USB cases.

I recently purchased a new iMac with an 1 Terrabyte external drive.  I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac.  I have not downloaded the external drive's software onto my old Mac because of this concern.  May I simply "drag and drop" the contents I want transferred to the external drive, then set up my new Mac with the drive and download there? or is there a better procedure?  Comments?  Help?

If your intention is to copy a just documents and data (word processing files and music for example) then yes, you can use drag and drop. If you want to transfer data and applications and permissions, it would actually be easiest to connect the drive to your old computer and turn on TimeMachine. Once TM is finished, connect the drive to your new computer and restart it holding the option key to get into Recovery mode. Then you can use the restore from TM option to transfer your data and programs to the new computer.

  • Cure for crash after creating a RAID group on external drives?

I tried creating a RAID 1 mirror group on a pair of Western Digital Studio LX Firewire-attached 2 TB external drives (new), and Lion crashed with the RAID code on the stack (according to the crash report).   The system always crashes the same way if I connect even one of the drives, at boot time or later.  The RAID group was of the whole drives, not a pair of partitions.   I was using a Mac Mini, but I expect my MacBook, also running Lion, will crash the same way, if I try to attach the drives to repartion them.   I suppose I can attach the drives via USB to a Linux box to clobber the partition tables.
Is there a way to set up RAID 1 on Lion which does not lead to an immediate crash?
I have been a happy Mac user, but shipping with RAID 1 being so badly broken is really careless.   I expect a lot better.

I set up a mirror raid on two external USB drives, and set to 256k under osx 10.7.5 then got the full melt down
and the same every time i tried to reformat the drives.
I did notice a slight moment of time when opening disk utility before the crash!
    The following worked for me.
Start the computer, insert just one of the USB or Firewire drives then open disk utility.
Here is the key point as fast as you can select the drive icon as soon as it appears on the left  and hit the erase option
don't worry about the type of format select the t hit the erase button as quickly as you can and again as the prompt comes up are you sure you want to erase the disk.
Then repeat again on the second drive and then start the raid set up over again with blocks set at 128k.
Probably advised to unmount all other drives so you do not accidentally format the wrong drive given this is all about haste.
Really hope this helps and think it through as to how it relates to your set up.

  • HT201250 Will using Time Machine on my external drive, reformat or wipe my external drive?

I need to backup my whole computer, and was wondering if I can do this with Time Machine using my external hardrive. The problem is, that I am using this same external hardrive for other things and I don't want to lose that data. Will using Time Machine wipe my external hardrive? Apple did not make it so clear in their guide on using Time Machine, but I have a feeling that it must reformat the hardrive. If my hunch is correct, is their any other way I can backup my computer using an external hardrive without having to wipe it? I was thinking about just dragging Macintosh HD into a folder on my hardrive and letting the file transfer. What are the downsides of doing this?
NOTE: Don't know if this makes a big difference, but I am running OS X 10.8.3

If the drive is not formatted correctly for Time Machine, then it will have to format it. But, it won't do that automatically. It will ask if you want to use that disk for Time Machine when you attach it.
You can have Time Machine on a drive with other data. See Pondini's Time Machine FAQ: http://pondini.org/TM/3.html

  • Mac Pro will not boot from cd or external drive

My Mac has an issue whith the boot drive, and I would like to format the drive and reinstall OS-X Mountain Lion and then use Time Machine to resore the Data. When I try to boot my Early 2009 Mac Pro (OS-X 10.8) using the option key, it loads the scrren that allows me to choose among the bootable drives. Once I choose either an external drive or CVD, it loads to the apple screen, stays there for about 5 minutes, then loads the OS on the main drive... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Bill Mueller

At first I was just going to say it sounds like you have a bad optical drive, but then you had to go and say that it also won't boot from a HDD.
That just makes things a whole lot worse.
Start by removing the side cover and checking the RAM to see if any of the LEDs are lit up indicating bad RAM. Usually if there's any bad RAM found, it will just automatically disable that stick, but maybe yours isn't for some reason.
Look for any other LEDs that may be lit. Generally speaking, the only time you should see an LED (outside of the power LED) lit consistently is if there's a problem.
You should also see if you can get Apple Hardware Test to run, which may or may not find some problem.
But sorry to say, it's sounding very suspiciously like a bad logic board.
One other thing to try, is putting the SL drive into a different slot. So if you were putting it in slot 2, try slot 3 or 4. If you just have a bad SATA port, you might be able to just work around that until you get a new system.
If by chance this system is still under warranty, do not walk, do not pass go, do not collect $200, RUN to the nearest AASP or Apple store to make it THEIR problem to sort out.

  • How to restore a software raid mirror after a drive failure

i set up a software raid mirror with two hard drives in a mac pro. then one failed as reported by disk utility. i replaced the drive. it does not seem possible to restore this raid short of copying the files to a third location and then erasing and establishing a new raid. is there a way to simply "restore"?

Question: Do I need special software to administer the Mac Pro RAID Card or the Xserve RAID Card?
Answer: Normal administration can be carried out using the RAID Utility (found in /Application/Utilities) or by using the raidutil command. For more information refer to the User’s Guide or man raidutil.
The command-line utility should be available in Single-User mode.
To run RAID Utility, you may need to boot to an alternate source of Mac OS to be able to manipulate the Boot drive.

  • Will Migration Assistant work with an external drive?

I'm upgrading the hd in my Powerbook and for various reasons have the new drive in an external enclosure. It's got a fresh OS installed and all I need to do now is copy all the data from my old drive that's still in the Powerbook to the new drive in the external enclosure. What's the best way to do this? I know I shouldn't just copy everything over and I got error messages using Disk Images. A friend suggested Migration Assistant but that only seems to want to work with complete computers, not external drives. I've got a G5 in the office too that I can employ if needed.
I want to keep all my settings and prefs intact as I'm told Migration Assistant will do.

As long as the Firewire hard drive is a bootable drive for Mac OS X it should work with the Migration Assistant. These two companies offer that kind of drive:
    http://www.macsales.com/
    http://www.cooldrives.com/
While it doesn't matter for the machines you quoted, if you choose to migrate to a newer Intel Mac, it won't work. This article explains what to do in that case:

  • Will BootCamp install Windows on an external drive?

Instead of partitioning the onboard SSD of my 2011 MacBook Air, I was wondering if I could connect an external drive to put Windows on and boot into Windows from that device. Is that possible?
    Thanks!

No, you can run Mac OS from there though and keep the SSD for Windows.
Realize this has been said 100s of times and a quick search with Google/Bing/Yahoo would also answer.

  • Will iMac (wired) USB keyboard connect external drive?

I have a recent iMac with the wired USB 2.0 keyboard.
When I connect a WD Passport portable USB external drive to the keyboard, I get a repeating click-click-click from the drive.  It never shows up on the iMac.
If I plug the same external drive into the USB 3.0 slots on the back of the iMac, it fires right up.
Is that how it's supposed to work?  Do the USB 2.0 slots on the keyboard not support a small external drive?  It seems strange that it would cause the drive to whir and click, but not be recognized by the Mac.
Can anyone explain?  Or is there something wrong with my keyboard?e

USB drives which don't have their own power supply usually won't work if plugged into a keyboard.

  • Easy way to install bootable OSX (or Win XP) on external drive in iMac?

HD in wife's 17" white iMac Core 2 went belly up. She exclusively uses Windows XP on the machine via Bootcamp.
Any want to do an install on 250G Western Digital USB HD so that she can run from that and just ignore the screwed up drive inside the iMac? If OSX than I'd want to install Bootcamp and Win XP on the external, too.
Or, if feasable, just install XP on the external HD and boot from there & again ignore the broken drive inside the iMac?
    Thanks.

You should have no issues booting from a Mac OS X install DVD and installing Mac OS X on an external HDD, USB or FireWire. The issue is going to be getting Windows on that drive. Boot Camp will only install a Windows partition on a Mac's internal drive, but not an ext drive.
    However, if anyone has figured out how to do this it would be the folks in the Boot Camp forums. The Forums are at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology. Here is a link;

  • How do i install the osx software onto my new hard drive?

I have just recently replaced my hard drive due to a fault from the previous one. how do i install my software without a cd? Everything is done by internet cd's just dont exist anymore. What are my options?

I don't know if this will work or not, but if your machine shipped with Lion, try booting while holding down the Command, Option and R keys. You may be able to format your drive and then reinstall Lion on it.
It may work - it might not; give it a try.

  • App that will compare contents of two large external drives?

    Hi-
I have two external 1 TB drives. They are supposed to have identical content but don't. I would like to see what files drive A has on it that drive B doesn't.
Is there an app that will scan both drives and tell me what files drive B is missing?
    Thank you!

This is a nice use for command-line utilities. There are actually many variations on how you want the answer of what question. Disks are treated as folders in Unix, and presumably MacOSX. You can find them in /dev. The disk0 is the boot disk. Output of 'diff' is ready for use in scripts with 'ed' or 'sed'.
    Darwin commands & scripts
You can experiment with 'apropos diff', 'whatis diff', 'whereis diff', and 'man diff | cat', where diff can be replaced with any command. Some useful commands might be 'diff', 'uniq', and 'crc' or 'md5'.
    Aqua applications
If you're not interested in learning a Unix script language, you can find several suitable Aqua front-ends for them at Sorceforge, MacUpdate, or VersionFinder.
