Will Portal migrate to Tomcat?

I have a question regarding iAS and Portals use of Jserv.
A few quotes from www.apache.org:
"Our most widely used project, JServ, will also be migrated, but as it has already been noted, JServ is in a bug fix only mode. No new features will be added and no new development will occur. As a replacement for JServ, we recommend that you please evaluate the Tomcat servlet engine for your needs as it implements the latest Servlet API specifications and that is where all active development is occuring."
"3 July 2000 Apache JServ has been chosen (along with Apache httpd) by Oracle for use in their Internet Application Server product. The Java Apache Project is proud to have our software commercially endorsed. Hopefully they will also migrate to the Jakarta Tomcat servlet engine which supports the latest Servlet API and JSP specifications out of the box."
My question is: will Oracle migrate to Tomcat, and if so: When?
Best regards,
Rune Lxvnfseth

I've passed your question on to the Application Server Product Managers. Look for a reply directly from them. This discussion is focused on Oracle9iAS Portal rather than the Application Server.

  • Portal migration

    Hi All,
I am involved in a Oracle Portal migration project. The current version of Portal is 3.0.9 which is no longer support by Oracle. The client has requested to upgrade into OAS 10.1.4. The curent database for Portal repository is 8.1.7.
I have got an idea from OTN that this can not be upgrated into 10.1.4. But I like to hear from you all who has been involved in Oracle Portal migration before. Thanks for your time.

    Hello Everyone,
Let me provide you a brief desription of what I am doing now: Implemeting Oracle SSO/Portal but this needs to be integrated with PeopleSoft too for authentications.
I have reviewed some whitepapers and it explains that Oracle SSO Server for PeopleSoft version less than 8.4.7 that is runing on 3 party web server like wev logic, Oracle SSO Server can create PS_TOKEN too and we can single sign on between PeopleSoft and Oracle Portal but how?!! I couldn't find any documents yet?
Any help? To be honest, I have implemented SSO before but this case scenario is quite different. Will appreciate your help.

  • Portal Migration from 9i to 10G

    Hi all
Iam new to Portals, We will be getting a portal migration project from 9i to 10G.
I need to know the upgradation procedures needed to do the same. It will be very helpful if anyone can refer me any good document or white paper for this.
    Thnx in advance
    Sriram

    Hi
I recommend before migrate to a new version, review the export and import, because this a bug in the portal 10G Don´t clone that's why is not function is the 10G version. you cand find documentation about migration and requiriments in the Oracle portal section. Be carefully with the indications in the pdf documentation and do a plan B if you have problems with the migration.

  • Instructions on hosting my portlet on Portal's Apache Tomcat.

    Greetings,
I wrote a portlet that I have been hosting on a copy of Apache Tomcat I installed on my local machine. Now I want the Portal's Apache Tomcat Web Server to host it.
I don't just want to muck with the portal's internal copy of the web.config file if there is a more elegant way. I presume there must be because as we installed the different services, they made portlets available.
Any help, guidance, or instructions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
Portal application has nothing to do with your portlet application. Your portlet application has to be hosted on remote server (as soon as there is no native portlets anymore).
It still may be the some Tomcat instance where your portal is (bad practice), but even in this case it will be different application in webapp catalog. Portal will allways communicate with your portlet over http. This is one of the most important difference of Plumtree in compare with many other portal vendors.

I know there is a migration assistant, but I have multiple drives in my pc.  Will the migration assistant be able to handle this?  I'm going to be trying to move the date to a new imac 27' with fusion drive.

the following set of instructions is a little longer, so you might want to print it out and have it handy
    Step 1 - PC
If your PC already is connected to the Internet, hold down the Windows button on
your keyboard and simultanously press R. Into the opening window enter "cmd" (without
the quotation marks). A command line will open, enter "ipconfig" (again without the
quotation marks) at the prompt. Now find the section labelled "Ethernet-Adaptor" and
note the values for IP-Address, Subnet-Mask and Default-Gateway on a sheet of paper
If your PC is not already connected to the internet, you need to manually configure its IP address.
    open Network and Sharing Center
do a right click on Ethernet and select Properties
in middle of the screen there is a box labelled "This connection uses the following items"
out of this box select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)"
click on the Properties button in the right corner
Into the window "Use the following IP address" enter the following values
    IP-Address: 192.168.0.1
    Subnet-Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default-Gateway is the IP-Address of your Router. This value is needed for internet connection, for the file sharing setup only this value can be left empty.
    Step 2 - Mac
If your Mac already is connected to the internet, it is likely that it has automatically receive the necessary parameters from your router and therefore should be in the same network as your PC. To be on the safe side, you can check this by
    open System Preferences
    select Network
choose Ethernet from the panel on the left side of the window
    click on Advanced
    click on TCP/IP
compare the values for IP-Address, Subnet-Mask and Default-Gateway with those you wrote down earlier.
If both PC and Mac have identical numbers in the first three parts of the IP-Address, you are set.
If your Mac is not already connected to the internet, you need to manually configure its IP-Address as well.
In the TCP/IP window you have just opened select "Manually" from the drop down menu "Configure IPv4:"
    Enter the following values
    IP-Address: 192.168.0.2
    Subnet-Mask: same as with PC
    Default-Gateway: same as with PC
Step 3 - Activate File Sharing on PC
    open Control Panel
    select Network and Internet
    select Network and Sharing Center
on the left panel select change advanced sharing settings
in the middle of the new page enable turn on file and printer sharing
Step 4 - Activate File Sharing on Mac
    open System Preferences
    select Sharing
set check mark next to File Sharing (green circle appears on the right side next to File Sharing:)
    click on Options:
set check mark next to Share files and folders using SMB
in the listbox under the text Windows File Sharing make sure there is a check mark next to your account name
Step 5 - Create a share on your PC
In Explorer select the folder you wish to share
do a right click on that folder and select "Share with"
    choose "Specific people"
a new window opens. there select your Windows username (usually the first in the list)
if you plan to copy from Windows to Mac only, it would be sufficient to grant Read permission only, but, since most likely you are the only person to access that share and certainly do not plan to sabotage yourself, Read & Write permission is ok too.
    finally click on "Share"
Step 6 - Create a share on your Mac
Once the check mark next to your account name is set (see above) your home directory is automatically set as a share.
Step 7 - Connect your PC to your Mac-Share
do a right click on the network icon which resides on your desktop or in the left
    panel of every Explorer window
    Select Connect Share
in the text box next to Folder: enter \\<ip-address-of-your-mac>\<your-osx-username>
if you are using the same username and password on both Windows and OSX click on "Finish",
if not set the check mark next to "Connect using different credentials" afterwards click on "Finish" A new window will open where you enter username and password that you are using with OSX
Step 8 - Connect your Mac to your PC-Share
hold down the command key and press K simultanously or in Finder click on Go in the menu at the top of your screen and select "Connect to Server"
in the Window that opens enter smb://<your-windows-username>:<your-windows-password>@<ip-address-of-your-PC/<y our-windows-username>
    or
smb://<ip-adress-of-your-PC/<your-windows-username> you will be asked to enter your Windows username and password in popup window
Now you have both computers connected to each other. Each will provide you access to your home directory of the other computer. Open a second Explorer or Finder window with your local home directory and start copying

  • Migrate to Tomcat 6

Soon I will be upgrading from Tomcat 4 to Tomcat 6.
Can I reload my wars from Tomcat 4 into Tomcat 6?
Does Tomcat 6.0.18 come with the jdbc drivers (mysql, oracle) and mail.jar or do I need to install them?
Please advise any other info I should know before making the upgrade?

Can I reload my wars from Tomcat 4 into Tomcat 6?Theoretically, yes. Tomcat has been written to be backwards compatible. If you keep your web.xml declared as it is currently, then it will treat it as a "Servlet2.3/JSP1.2" application.
In practice: try it and see if it breaks or not.
The only thing I can think of that might be even slightly different was a bug fix related to request.getRequestURI().
    The functionality of getRequestURI changed so you might have to replace references to getRequestURI with request.getAttribute("javax.servlet.forward.request_uri");
Does Tomcat 6.0.18 come with the jdbc drivers (mysql, oracle) and mail.jar or do I need to install them? You need to install them
I take it you would also be upgrading the underlying java version as well as the container?
ie Java 1.4 to Java 5 or Java 6?
Are you going to be upgrading these webapps for JSP2.0 using EL and JSTL or keeping them "as is"?

  • Oracle Portal Migration - Help

    Hi,
I am trying to migrate the oracle portal that is configured to use OID from development to testing environment and I don't know where to start.
Can anybody guide me where to start? There has been some development done and I want to replicate DEV to Test Env. I don't know what files need to be version controlled.
    Any response will be appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
I think, 9.0.4 did not have Cloning as the scripted cloning procedure you see in later versions. Cloning feature was introduced in Release 2 of 10g OAS. Please see the following link for description of new features in this release.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_19/core.1012/b13995/whatsnew.htm#sthref7
However, you can create multiple instances using export/import, or database procedures, and that is supported for portal 9.0.4 too. You can propagate your portal objects across other databases to create identical instances. that may also be used to create multiple clusters and then clone configurations using DCM.
Check this link for one such deployment.

  • Portal migration from Windows to HP-UX

    Dear gurus,
We need to migrate portal 6.0 SP12 from Win to HP-UX platform. Oracle is the database.
    We've installed and configured MSS/ESS/LSO/E-recruiting
As basis specialist I plan next steps:
    1. Export Win portal database
    2. Full installation of portal on HP-UX with the same SP level (without Business packages deployment)
    3. Import database
    4. Export Win portal content to the portal trnsp request
    5. Import to the HP-UX portal trnsp request maked in step 4.
Am I right with steps mentioned above? It will be full copy of the Win portal?
May be there is another way or technology to migrate to the different operating system?
    Thanks in advance,
    Best regards, Elena

    Hi,
You can make use of the Heterogeneous System copy tool available on SMP for this purpose. You will also find a pdf guide for the same.

  • Portal Migration to Linux server

    Hi All
We have deployed Portal 7.01 SP5,  ESS6.03 on windows operating system But the end users will be using Linux server.
Can you please advise what all changes are required from portal end for this migration.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Honey

    Hello Honey,
What I can understand from your post is that, end users will be accessing the portal from a linux os (Browser may not be IE ). You may have to make sure that the application is compatible on the browser which the end users are going to access .

  • Portal Migration (Setting Up new Infra)

    Hi All:
We have a 3 system landscape (only for portal) at our company for different set of users. Now our current requirement is to set-up new infra exactly similar to the existing 3 system landscape for another set of users.
So, can any one help in understanding the steps involved in setting up, migrating, db refresh, and system copy for new infra with same as existing ones. What could be the best approach (step-by-step) for this scenario?
And, post to system setup there are few applications running on existing system needs to be migrated (copied) to new environment along with enabling SSO (ldap) to those applications.
Your response will be highly appreciated, waiting for a strategic approach for this task (only steps involved in do this task).
    Thanks to all in advance,

We are approaching 'system copy' for my query.

    Some more Error Messages :O
I added a Context Param in web.xml and added a value 'portal' to it and then I am getting the follwoing Error.
I have even checked the DataSync Master Repository and it shows that the WebFlows are available.
But when I restart the Server, I dont see any logs to confirm that it deploys the .wf files. I see that all other kind of files like .use, .ent, .seg etc are getting deployed. Why not .wf files is my worry :(
If anyone can throws some light on this it would be great.

  • Best Practices Portal Migration

We are planning at the moment an database switch on our portal systems.
Our systems are running on EP 7.0 SPS 14 and as the database we are using at the moment Oracle.
We want now to switch to DB2. The operating system stays untouched on AIX.
Mainly we are the portal for ESS / MSS applications.
Also during the switch a company also using our system will be cut off from the landscape. So we having a lot of content in the system that is not longer used.
We investigated two possible approach for realising the change.
    1. Use of the hetrogenous system copy.
    2. Export all content from the target system and import it into the source system.
What are the advantages / disadvantages of the two possibilites and which solution should be prefered?
    Best regards,
    Thomas

    Hi,
    It depends on the situation,
If there is less custom development and the hardware is outdated and version is very old then better go for fresh intstallation with the latest hardware.
I generally prefer fresh installation if the system is not too complex.
Otherwise portal upgradation is also one option.

  • SAP Portal Migration from 6.0 to 7.0 - ESS/MSS

    Hi,
We are planning to upgrade Portal from 6.0 to 7.0 along with ECC to 6.0. We have many customization done in ESS/MSS and we want to keep the same customization in the newer version of portal. Can you please let us know how to achieve this ? I know that we need to be in synch with ECC version for ESS/MSS, so we are upgrading BP for ESS/MSS as well.

When you say customization, are you talking about Webdynpro code changes made to the standard ESS/MSS applications ?
Unfortunately, the source code changes cannot be migrated with the click of a button when you upgrade.
The process is to manually look and compare the changes made by you in the old track (assuming you used NWDI) and the changes delivered by SAP in the new track using the Metadata comparison tool in NWDS.
If you want more explanation - refer to the attachment document (NWDI Cookbook for XSS) of SAP Note 872892.

As Sunny has suggested above, you might be able to use some of the existing backend configuration/customization as is and the rest would need some tweaks.
    Thanks,
    Shanti
