Will Power PC software work on Intel?

Hi,
I'm looking to buy a used intel imac duo - I have a 17" G4 PB - will all the software I have on my old system work on the intel machine? Why do I now see versions labeled Universal OR Power PC?
Thanks,
JHF
17" G4 Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hi JHF
Most applications written for the PowerPC will work correctly on an Intel Mac, thanks to a background feature called Rosetta, which translates the PPC code for the Intel CPU. However, this code will still not be optimised for Intel, and so some apps will see a slowdown in performance. This slowdown will vary between applications. For example, Adobe Creative Suite 2 generally performs poorly on Intel Macs.
Universal versions have been rewritten to make use of both types of processor, and will generally run better on Intel Macs than the non-Universal version.

  • Mac book pro -intel duo  - will my old software work with it?

    Not sure if I should get the 2.4 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo Mac book pro as I have heard old software will not work on it and I really do not want to have to buy new software, just to add on to the cost.
    Can anyone help.
    The software I have that I want to work with it is:
    Micro Soft Office Version 10.0.0
    Photoshop Version 7.0
    Final cut Pro HD Version 4.5
    I am have OS X TIGER 10.4.6 although the operating system that will come with the new Mac book Pro will be leopard - I guess.
    Can any one help with my dilemma?
    THANKS

    Microsoft Office v.X will work fine, Adobe Photoshop 7 should be able to do its thing as well although you might have problems installing it (some of the Adobe installers don't work right). However, it's not recommended that you use less than FCP 5.1.
    Sure having to upgrade software is a pain and can substantially add to the cost of transitioning to Intel system but as time most applications will need to be upgraded anyway. It just pushes the costs forward a bit. Just remember you pay upgrade costs and not new package costs.

  • I am planning on getting a new IMAC will my old software work on the new mac

    I am planning on buying a IMAC so will I have to replace all my software that is on my G4 running 10.5.8 ?

    Not ALL of your software, but likely some of it. Right click on an application and click "Get Info." Next to "Kind:" if it says Power PC, it will not work on a new iMac.

  • Will distributed audio processing work on Intel Macs?

    I'm currently anticipating that I'm going to need more processing power to run virtual instruments and plug-ins in Logic Pro 7. The obvious solution is to get a second G5 and run it as a node, but I won't need it for a while yet. I might be able to put it off until the new Intel-based Macs come out next year, but then here's the key question: Does anyone know whether the Intel-based PowerMacs (and PowerBooks, for that matter...when they arrive) will be compatible as distributed audio processing nodes with a PowerMac G5 (PPC) host?

    Macs is Macs. The processor will make no difference. It's the OS that counts.
    How can you be certain? I have asked the same question elsewhere and the response I got was, "Even if anybody did know the answer to your question they would be developers who are under a strict Non-Dislcosure Agreement. You'll most likely just have to wait and see."
    I'm not at all certain that it's a given. I'm not arguing your point that "It's the OS that counts." I agree. Nevertheless, we're talking about a significant change in fundamental hardware architecture, so the question as to whether a MacIntel and a PPC G5 will have the same interoperability as two G5s still seems reasonable to me. I don't doubt that it's possible, but I suspect that the MacIntel node machine might have to pay a price in CPU overhead for making the translation. After all, its software will be different.
    I'll probably get another G5 anyway. I mean, it's not like it's going to be obsolete. I can run Logic Pro 7 in its current configuration for a looonnnggg time before I exhaust its capabilities. I'll run into hardware limitations long before I ever run into a software limitation.

  • Will Logic 7.0 work on intel Mac w/ Lion

    if upgarded to the latest version of 7.2.3? Any know if there are issues if it is installed on my MacBook Pro 2.8. GHz Intel Core i7 running 10.7.3?

    I don't actually know if it will run on Lion or Not but there are other issues.
    The version 7 (Logic 8 as well) install routines draw on Apple's Rosetta PPC emulation software that was included in Leopard and could be downloaded for Snow Leopard, Lion does not have nor will have Rosetta emulation.
    So, while v7.2.3 may run in Lion it will not install.
    This is not to say it couldn't be moved over from another computer... then there is the matter if the dongle/key would work or not.

    I would assume, because they're metion:
    Intel Core 2 Duo (1.8 GHz) (Game will not run on a PowerPC Macintosh)
    So it's a Intel game and running with Lion, if you're computer meet the hardware requirements.

    Try booting in Safe Mode by holding your Shift key down when booting. Also, try holding the eject key down when booting to eject the DVD. If you plug a mouse in and hold the clicker down when booting, that should eject the DVD.

    Why do I receive the message on my Macintosh,"You can't open the (name of application) application because Power PC applications are no longer accepted"?" At one time the Mac software worked so I'm confused. Fore example I tried to open Concorder Pro snd it gave me the message.

    From a recent post I answered for a similar question about the lack of PowerPC app support in Mt. Lion:
    Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
    However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions if they are available, or find alternative software that will open your data files, modify them and save them;
    4.  Install Snow Leopard Server (with Rosetta) into Parallels or VMWare Fusion.  Apple is now selling Snow Leopard Server for only $19.99 + sales tax & shipping; call 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753).    This solution will give you concurrent use of your PowerPC applications and access to Lion or Mt. Lion.

  • Can PC software work on the iMac G5 with Intel?

    Can PC software work with the iMac G5 with Intel processor? I need to know! And also, is there a new apple computer coming out next year (2007) that will be able to run PC software? I am mainly asking because I want to know if I will be able to run PC games on iMac G5 with Intel or the new computer coming out in 2007. I need to know!

    iMac G5 Intel Processor   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows XP.
    Whereas, not everyone here with an Intel iMac has installed, tried to install or has experience with BC & XP, everyone there has or at least has an interest. You may attract help more quickly there.
    The Forum is at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology.
    Here is a link;
    Forum: Boot Camp Public Beta
    Panther was the version of Mac OS X before the current version, Tiger. Apple Computer does not release information in advance of its introductions of new hardware/software and the rules of the Apple Disussions forbid "speculation." Boot Canp is Beta because it is not yet a permanent part of Mac OS X. It works fine. It does not require constant updates. It comes with instructions for its own installation as well for Windows XP SP2. You have to purchase Windows from Microsoft. Folks report that games run fine and that Windows runs better on their Macs than it ever did on their PCs!
    Visit the Boot Camp forum at the above link for further info.

  • Will the Black 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook work with the Thunderbolt Display?

    I'm looking into buying a new Thunderbolt Display, but do I need to buy a new MacBook Pro or will the Thunderbolt Display work with my Black 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook?

    Yes. You'll need to create a Mavericks USB installer from the App Store download, and the App Store is only available with 10.6 and above, so that's a challenge for you to overcome, but that SSD will install just fine.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    It looks like you can upgrade to OS X Mavericks (you have got an Early 2009 iMac). Follow these steps to upgrade > http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade
    Before upgrading, make a backup of your files with Time Machine and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com
