Will PPRo support new Sony HDR-AX2000 in 24P Mode?

The new Sony camera looks quite nice, but I am curious if the current version of PPRo will support the 24P format it delivers.  It says it encapsulates it in 60i, similar to other vendors, but not sure it will convert it over propertly to a true 24P like Adobe provides support for the Panasonic cameras.

If you leave it encapsulated inside the 60i and put it inside a 60i timeline it will play just fine, but won't be true 24P (although will maintain the same general look, it is just interlaced and you won't have full progressive frames which may or may not matter depending on what you are doing).  If you want a true 24P timeline you will need 3rd party software to extract it, like Cineform's Neoscene which worked great on my Canon cameras which also encapsulate inside of 60i.  I have seen in blog posts where people have tested with the new Sony and said Cineform works fine.
A couple of notes on the AX2000, by the time you factor everything in and all the accessories, etc, the HXRNX5U (it's more advanced brother) to me is a better buy and in my opinion will get a better resale.  However, you may also want to consider the HMC150 from Panasonic, I also was tempted to get the Sony, but just bought the HMC150 because of a number of reasons.  Even though it doesn't have the 20x zoom, it has comparible low light performance, better colors, a better way to focus (which is very important with HD content), can write to true 24P without having to do any conversion, and it is much lighter and has a proven track record.  With CS5 coming out now and having the ability to truly take advantage of the GPU, memory and multiple cores, it is going to be possible now to edit natively in PPRo without doing any conversions and I for one really look forward to that because when you convert to something like cineform you are making much larger files and it adds to the workflow time as well.  With the Panasonic you just record in 24P mode (720 or 1080), copy it to your hard drive and you are ready to edit.  There are still some advantages to the Cineform codec, like 10 bit 4:2:2 color, but depending on what you are doing you may not need it.
Hope this helps.  It would be interesting to here from anyone who had the HMC that also uses the Sony.

  • Imovie HD6.0.3 won't see my new Sony HDR-CX11E USB connected camcorder

Despite spending 4 hours now and wanting to shoot myself in the face. My brand new Sony HDR-CX11E is not being recognised by Imovie HD 6.0.3.
I have followed the instructions to the letter about a hundred times now. I'm using a Intel Core Duo imac, when I plug in the USB cable the memory stick is showing on the desktop, but when I open Imovie.... nothing, No Camera Attached. I have tried opening imovie with every available option tagged, DV, DV Wide, HDV 1080, HDV 720, Mpeg4 but every time it just fails to see the camcorder.
I read in one of my thousand searches on the subject that you first need to delete any Mpeg2 content from the camera, but I only bought it today and can't find any to delete, I even reformatted the stick to no avail.
    PLEASE help !!!!!

iMovie HD6 requires a miniDV camcorder to capture video via Firewire. It will not work with any other format of camcorder, like yours, that only has USB.
If you still want to stay with HD6, and who wouldn't, as it is still the best non pro editing platform there is, you should return that cam for a Sony miniDV model.
Otherwise, you will need to get iLife 09.

  • I have a Sony HDR-AX2000.

I have a Sony HDR-AX2000. I also have iMovie 9.0.1 and OS 10.6.8 and have an iMac with Intel Duo Core processor. I have shot many items on my camera and cannot for the life of me download them into iMovie. Both the CLI files and the MTS files are greyed-out and will not allow themselves to be selected much less downloaded. Please help.

Maybe try updating the iMovie version to 9.0.4 unless you're trying to keep the older version for some reason. The MTS files are part of an arrangement of little files and folders that iMovie should recognize as an AVCHD archive. Which it doesn't sound like it is seeing right now.

  • I have a new Sony HDR-CX360.  The PMB software included is onl

I have a new Sony HDR-CX360 camera.  The PMB software included is only for PCs.  I am trying to import some video.  When I connect with the USB cable nothing happens.  What do I need to do to import my videos?

    Greetings,
For long term headache free use, you may wish to return that camera and buy one that the manufacturer (Sony) indicates is Mac compatible.
Your computer comes with the iMovie program installed which will import from a variety of cameras depending on which version of iMovie you have.  Here is the list of cameras that work with the current version of iMovie '11: http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras.  The model you indicate is not on the list although models before and after it are.  You could try just opening up iMovie from your Applications folder and see if it can recognize and import from that camera but as it is not on the list of tested cameras, it may or may not work.
If iMovie does not see or cannot import from that camera and you don't want to take it back and get one that is Mac compatible then you will need AVCHD file conversion software to convert each movie you take:

  • Have FCP, new Sony HDR-FX7e and an iMac G5 (non intel core) please help

    Hi,
This is going to be a bit of a dumb question but i need to ask to be sure of the equipement i have and if i need some new hardawre n my mac to capture the video in HD.
I have an older iMac G5, FCP and a new Sony HDR-FX7e with Belkin 4-6 pin iLink cable.
When i try to capture video that i have filmed in HD 29fps, FCP brings up an error:
Something like: Codec is wrong and also hardware card. I am guessing that the video card is not capable enough as it is the one that came with the mac. Also i am trying to capture the video onto the Hard drive which has 198Gb left. I guess this needs a firewire drive capable of teh right speed.
I am guessing here so please advise as i am so new to this you would not believe and i know it is ambitious of me to expect to plug and play but i can pick it up quickly with the right advice.
Oh, the easy set up i used was on 1080i 60
    Thanks,
    Neil

    Neil,
    1) Your best bet is to get 5.1 if you do not have it yet. It is a paid crossgrade, but as long as you have the original install discs it is a simple process.
    2) The "e" at the end of your camera indicates that it is the PAL version I believe. Do you edit in PAL? or NTSC? Whichever you use just make sure to choose the proper easy setup.
    3) Since you have a G5, I would suggest using that as your video machine. You can get around the firewire situation in one of two ways. First, and best in my opinion, is to purchase a second internal SATA harddrive and install it in the spare bay, set this as your "Scratch Disk" and your off. Second, buy a PCI firewire card and install this in a spare PCI slot, then connect your firewire drive to this. Or, if you feel the need, do both.
    4) As for why iMovie works and FCP doesn't, the simple answer is the iMovie is a consumer program that has much lower tolerances than the PRO FCP. From what I understand, iMovie does not capture timecode and does not capture audio and video as separate files, among other things. To do these things there must be proper communication between the computer and camera.
    5) Another thought is that your camera may be set to downconvert the footage to SD on output. This might also explain why you got something in iMovie and not FCP. Check in the menu system for your cam and see if it is set to downconvert.

  • Does iLife 06 recognize the new SONY HDR-SR7E  High definition Hard drive

We have the new SONY High definition Hard drive recorder.
I have iMovie06 and the new upgrade iMove08.
I want to import into 06. When i try it says "no camera detected" but it imports fine into 08.
    Any ideas?
I dont want to use 08 and then import into 06 because i am worried about it duplicating and we do not have a lot of disc space, and also the quality seems dreadful when i view in 06.
PLEASE HELP - i have so much video to edit, and i really want to use just 06 as i know what i am doing!

sorry, rich kid, .. I don't get all that ..
    a few remarks from here:
iM08 is esp. made for that HDD corders.. why not using it?
never judge pic quality in iM itself.. esp. iMHD6 is made ONLY for TV delivery and it delivers excellent quality.. standard PAL/NTSC, interlaced, 'low' resolution, 25/29.97fps ..
HiDef = ~40/50GB per hour.. so disk space shouldn't be an issue in times, you get 500Gigs for ~120€.. you spend so much money on your recording device (and hopefully on your telly/'screen'..) , now you have to 'add' some investment to your edit hardware
    iMHD6 doesn't support mpeg2, and it does't support that AVCHD-'flavour' of mpeg2, Sony uses..
    Voltaic
    http://mac1080hd.com/
is a converter for making such files useful outside iM08 ..
long, unconvenient workarounds.. instead of using a plug'n play solutions ..

  • Will Aperture support new Photo app's library?

New Photo app (comes with OS X 10.10.3 beta) has changed iPhoto library name and structure, since Aperture uses the same photo library as iPhoto uses, does that mean Aperture will no longer work when OS X 10.10.3 is officially released to public?
Will existing Aperture's filters be compatible with new Photo app's editing function?

You can open the versions with the filename extensions "migratedphotolibrary", e,g, iPhoto Library iPhoto.migratedphotolibrary.
While you are experimenting, make sure the filename extensions will show for all your photo libraries, so you know which version you are dealing with.
If you try to browse the main "Photos.library" in Aperture or iPhoto, those applications will simply open the last library they could open, and if you have deleted this library, Aperture or iPhoto will come up empty.

  • When will PPRO support the GTX 470?

Any ideas on timing for upcoming support for additional vid cards? If I buy a pc today with a GTX470 what needs to be done when Adobe gets around to supporting the card? Do we download a patch from them or what? In other words, how does my software then recognize the card?  Thanks for helping out a confused, non-expert!!

I think when they do announce it there should be fireworks and skywriting because a lot of us are waiting for that news.
I'm kind of in the same boat you are (purchasing in the next 7 days).  For now, I'm getting the 470 too and just applying the hack which many have used with great success.
My best guess is when  the udpate comes and the 470 is neatly supported we may have to appy a reverse hack to let the natural files take over or just let things ride.  I'm curious to see what the senior members of the board think.

  • I have a new sony HDR CX110. I cannot download from the camera to the iMac with the usb cable.

I can download from the handycam to a PC, but not to the Imac. Is there a problem, or am I just not doing it correctly? I have used other video cameras to download video to the mac. I go to import, but the handycam doesn't show up as an option to dowload to.

hughmass, is exactly right mentioning 1080 @ 60p as being a potential culprit. One option might be to use a conversion utility to re-wrap your footage into a format iMovie will accept. One example of these types of converters is ClickWrap (http://www.divergentmedia.com/clipwrap) and Voltaic HD (http://www.shedworx.com/voltaichd)

  • SONY HDR UX3E - dvd camcorder with usb connection

does anyone know how to get video out of those new DVD video cameras ?
First, do those new, mini 8cm dvds go into a PowerBook G4 SuperDrive slot?
This camera has a usb cord, so i'm plugging that into PowerBook G4 usb port. The volume shows up on my desktop, but clicking on it just brings up various files that I can't see thumbnails of or open with imovie, dvd, or quicktime.
my previous camcorder used a firewire connectionl. Does anyone have experience with the new SONY HDR UX3E camera and a mac? it is High defintion.
is there a way to hook camera up with Firewire? my manual doesn't mention it. does anyone have this camera, and use it with a powerBookG4??
    ay help would be appreciated

WARNING!!!! Never pop in any thing other than a standard size CD/DVD in your slot-loading Macs!
You will damage your optical drive severely. You can only put those things in a tray-loading optical drive.
Second, the only connection supported by Macs are FireWire connections for digital video cameras. (Unless something has changed recently, which I don't believe since I am a video editor--not professional--myself in my job).
The best cameras for Macs are the DV cameras. If you want HD, you can record to mini-DV. The hard drive cameras work too, but it takes multiple steps before you can start editing your video.
I'm not sure how to extract the video from your DVDs since they are encoded, but I will look for you. (Unless someone answers before I do).
Check your camera to see if it does have a FireWire connection. Some cameras have both, though Sony tends to use USB 2.0. Theirs would be called "iLink" for the FireWire port.

**your DVDs have your videos encoded in MPEG-2 format so you need an application that will convert that into .DV or .MOV formats so that you can edit in iMovie or Final Cut. (Or QuickTime). There are many third-party apps for Mac OS X that can do that for you.

  • Capture HD video in Final Cut Express with a Sony HDR-FX7

When try to capture a video from my new Sony HDR-FX7 using the HD Format Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 the preview screen never shows the video being captured. In fact the video is never captured. Any suggestions to how set the 'Easy Setup'? When I try to capture with NTSC format the software keeps looking for a timecode that it will never find thus stops within a minute of starting. I would love to capture some video from my new Sony HDR-FX7 but not having much luck tonight. Have any helpful hints?

First, trash your preferences. Setting different incorrect settings and opening the capture window is a good way to corrupt the prefs files. HDV AIV 1080i60 is the only one to use if the camera is correctly set to output HDV.
Please give your full system specifications, what computer, what drives, how everything's connected, what settings are on the media (you really did shoot HDV?), and finally what version of the software, of the OS, and of QuickTime are you using?

  • Problems with HDV footage from sony HDR - HC9

I have a new sony HDR-HC9 cam corder. I want to shoot in hi def (HDV) format for best quality, but I produce standard def DVDs as a finished product. I was hoping to use the built in iLink conversion from HDV to DV when downloading to the computer into iMovie. I have had many problems with this.
Usually, when I set it up to do the downconversion, I see a blue screen in iMovie, although iMovie will ff and rew the camera, no images come across. I experimented with setting the camera in DV record mode at the same time as I had the iLink down conversion set, and this appeared to work. I started downloading an hour tape, and when I came back 65minutes later (after it should have been done), saw the message that iMovie had quit. Reopened the project, and saw an hour worth of footage in the trash, but it was too crazy to reorder the clips from the trash back to the clips pane.
I resigned to import in hdv (1080i) format and not mess with hardware downconversion. This worked fine. I then added some chapter markers and shared the project with iDVD. I saved the project as an image file and then mounted it to check it for errors. The video was OK, but towards the end of the project, the sound was out of sync by a few seconds with the video.
I deleted encoded assets from the iDVD project, then reburned (save as image file). Same defect.
I then started a new iMovie project in standard DV widescreen, and dragged all of the clips from the HDV (1080i) project into the time line. It took over an hour for my mac mini to run the conversion, but the movie in iMovie appeared OK. I redid the iDVD project, and saved as image file. It appears to have worked correctly (although I have not looked at it on my widescreen TV yet to assess image quality.
    Questions:
    1) Has anyone had any luck getting HDR-HC9 iLink HDV-DV hardware conversion to work with iMovie, consistently?
    2) Can anyone comment on image quality issues with converting HDV to DV footage using iMovie software.
    3) Has anyone seen audio sync problems with iDVD from HDV original footage.
    Thanks
