Will Print pictures but black ink gapping

I am having Printing trouble:
At first I thought my black ink cartridge went bad, so I replace it. No fix.
Black ink still leaving gaps in exactly the same place in documents.
Both in The Print Shop 2 and iWork>Pages.
So I took a desktop picture of documents.
Cropped desktop pictures printed fine.
Is this a Blank ink PRINTER problem (in which the printer is compensating with color ink cartridges) or is this a SYSTEM problem?
please help.

It sounds like a hardware problem with the printer. Try printing a test page from the printer, and see if the problem is there.

  • HP Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One Printer-C309a-new black ink cartridge will not print

i just installed a new black ink cartridge (manufactured by HP) when print quality became poor in the middle of a job.  it completed the job fine, but when i have tried to print subsequently, only those parts of the document that are in color/greyscale will print.  the black is simply absent from the document.  the supply level is showing as fine and all diagnostics indicate there is no probem.  i have not received any error messages.  i have tried turning the printer on/off.  i have tried cleaning the printheads.  i have tried uninstalling & reinstalling the cartridge.  i do not have any additional black cartridges to try to see if that will solve the problem, but as noted above, it did work initially.  i am just printing to regular plain white printer paper.  i have tried all the relevant steps in the HP troubleshooting document for poor print quality posted elsewhere on this page.  nothing has worked!  someone else's post mentioned resetting the printer, but did not say how it was done.  any ideas on a solution??? thanks!

To reset the printer, follow these steps:
While the power is on, remove the power cord from the back of the printer. Wait at least 30 seconds, then connect the power cord to the back of the printer, then turn the unit on. That will complete a power reset.
Now, missing black during printing can be a result of a couple of things. If it is only missing say when printing from Word, then the print settings within Word are set to grayscale only (or something similar) which would exclude the black cartridge. If it is from all programs, then it is either the main print settings set to grayscale only, or the printhead/cartridge is clogged up/dirty. If it is not the print settings, then create a print quality report and follow the steps in this document:

  • HP Photosmart 7510 will ONLY use photo black ink

I have a photosmart 7510 printer and I'm printing from microsoft word 2010 on a windows 8 computer. I'm printing a word document with no pictures in it. The printer preferences are set to Plain Paper with Normal quality. I cannot get the printer to use the XL black ink cartridge. It only uses the photo black ink. Is there a setting I can choose to get it to use the regular black ink?

    Hi shirsar,
I understand you have a Photosmart 7510 that seems to be using a lot more of the photo black than the regular black ink. I'm sorry to hear this, but believe I can assist you with a solution.
You can set the printer to use black ink only when printing from the PC and that should ensure that it uses that the black ink and not the photo ink. My instructions will be to set it up in the driver so it does it for all programs (if you want it for just the program please let me know and I will advise further). You will want to start with going to your Start screen, and just start typing Devices and Printers and you will want to open that (if that doesn't work type in Control Panel and then proceed to open Devices and Printers). Once Devices and Printers is open, right click on your Photosmart 7510 icon and select Printing Preferences. You will then want to click the Advanced button at the bottom right of the screen. The next page that opens will allow you to set the printer to use Black Ink Only when printing from the PC (please follow the screen shot below for any clarification).
Hope this helps, have a great day!!

  • Printer won't print email with black ink, how do I correct this?

I am new here, and seek some help. My wife's i-Mac computer has a problem of not printing email with black ink. However, the printer will print email text in all colors, but not with black ink. The printer goes through all the motion/movements like it is printing in black, but only a blank sheet of paper is the result. However, it will print a black horizontal line (topic divider) across the paper in black ink, if that is shown in the email. Strangely, the printer will print using black ink when asked to print a word doc. The ink jet cartridge is new, so it is not an issue of being low on black ink.
I have changed printers, but still experience the very same strange problem. Is this a software problem, or a computer setting that needs to be adjusted? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • C5380 - I want to print using ONLY black ink cartridge. Is this possible?

    Hi Folks,
I now understand that this model, HP C5380 and I'm guessing many others too, are programed to use an amount of colour ink even when selected to print in Black.
My question is:  Can I somehow program the printer to 'only print using the black ink cartridge' and not use the colour cartridges at all?
I have heard that this is possible with some models but need the specifics.
I am even willing to permanently disable the colour function if needed. The replacement ink catridges are so very expensive, if I'm unable to do this then I'll be looking for another printer and it won't be HP.  Thi is unfortunate because I think they make a good quality product - however they need to be on notice that their customers 'good will' and return business will not be forthcoming when they (and other compaines) continue to use money making strategies like this.
Many Thanks in advance for your time, B

  • Please help! My computer will print everything but shipping labels.

I have always used this printer for shipping labels. All of a sudden, it will not. It will print everything but. No errror message, I have plenty of ink, nothing has changed. What is going on?

Please read this post then provide some details.  What printer model? What operating system? How is the printer connected - USB, wired LAN, Wireless LAN, bluetooth? Are there any error messages on the printer or computer screen?  What program are you printing the shipping labels from? Does the printer go through the motions but the label is blank or does it simply ignore the print job?

  • Why can't I print in just black ink?

I keep being told my colour ink has run out. It is VERY expensive. Why can't I choose to print just in black?

Please read this post then provide some details.  What printer model?
HP and other printer manufacturers have different printer technologies for different needs.  For inkjet printers:
Some have printheads built into the ink cartridges.  These printers can typically print with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black (but not both) cartridges removed. The Deskjet 6980 series is an example, or for an all-in-one see the Officejet 8040.
Other printers have separate ink supplies and replaceable printheads.  An example would be the Officejet 8600 series printer.  The printhead in these printers can be replaced if they are damaged by running the printhead with colors out.  Some of these printers will allow printing with a color out, other will not.  If the printer is run without ink in one or more colors the printer may be damaged, but the user may be able to recover without having to send the printer for service.
Other printers have permanent printheads.  To run these without some ink in all the colors would risk causing damage to the printhead due to clogs, air ingested in the printhead or burned out printhead firing resistors. The Officejet 6700 is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed printheads this could require service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.
The document here describes how ink is used.  While the document is written for HP Inkjet printers the same principles apply to inkjet printers from other manufacturers.
If you never print in color a laser printer would likely be a better choice.  If you occasionally print color but mostly black an IPH printer like those in the first category above may be a good choice.

  • Poor print quality for black ink for Photosmart 6520e

Having a problem with black printing.  Using all HP cartridges, but when I run a test page, I get white, horizontal bars across the black test bars.  Some of them are 1/4 inch wide.  Replaced the cartridge and did the automatic printhead cleaning, but no improvement.  I know the printhead is not removeable, what is the next step?

    Hi @Mikenstlouis,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are running into some print quality issues with the black ink on your HP Photosmart 6520.
I would like you to continue here: Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages, I understand you may have done some of these steps already but I need you to complete all steps in order to resolve the missing black issue you are experiencing.
Please note: There are three printhead cleaning stages. Complete all three stages if necessary. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last (third) cleaning stage to start the first stage of the cleaning process over again.
If you are still unable to print in black ink, I suspect the issue may be the printer and not the cartridge. I highly recommend you call our technical support at 800-474-6836, I trust they will be able to assist you regardless of the warranty status. • Print only in black ink

HP Photosmart D7100 Printer series.podoshli the end of the yellow and red ink, but you need very urgently to print a document. have the opportunity to transfer print only the black cartridge?

    Lilbai wrote:
Bob, thanks for confirming what HP says the printer does and doesn't do. If however, I want to print in pure black, which appears to be an option provided by the printer, does the printer require the use, rather than the presence, of colour ink to print? HP says colour ink will be drawn by the printer when the level of black ink is low but my black ink is half full and I still can't print in black only. Why would any company make a printer whose printheads will be damaged due to the absence of ink in cartridges which are not used in a printing job? I just do not understand. Has HP told consumers in its manuals or on its website the fact that black only printing is not possible without the use or presence of colour ink in these printers?
First, I do not work for or speak for HP, I am simply explaining how printers with separate printheads and ink supplies work.  The printheads require fresh ink in each color to prevent clogging of the printheads. The printhead assembly contains both the black and color printheads.  Consider a print job that is going to print only black.  The color printheads are still being waved about in the air and will dry out and clog unless they are serviced during and after the printing has completed.  This servicing requires ink because that is the only fluid available for the printheads.  If printing were allowed without any color ink available for servicing the printheads could become clogged to an extent that they require (expensive) replacement. Every company that uses fixed or semipermanant inkjet printheads has similar constraints.
If you need a printer that will allow printing with one or more colors empty or removed then get a printer with the printheads included with the ink supplies.  On these devices the printhead is replaced with each new cartridge so it is possible to print with one or more colors missing without risking damage to the printer.

  • HP 7520 -- how to print using large black ink cartridge?

Hi, I've got the HP 7520 with the two black ink cartridges, one small and one large. However, as best I can tell, it's only using the black ink from the small cartridge, even when I print only in black and white (or "high quality grayscale"). Since 95% of the printing I need to do is just black and white (text, mostly) this is kindof annoying -- is there a way to force/encourage it to use the black in the bigger cartridge.
The reasons I believe it's not using the big ink cartridge is
    1) I've had to replace the small one half a dozen times in a pretty short time; the big one I haven't not at all, and it still shows up as full when I check ink levels2) when printing in B/W starts to get streaky, I run the "Print qualty diagnostic" page, and the "Black" section shows up as streaky but the "Photo" section (which appears to correspond to the larger blank ink cartridge) looks fine.
Also, when I photocopy in B/W it appears to work fine even when printing in B/W is not, so presumbly that's because it's using the big ink cartridge then.
Thanks in advance for the help/advice.
    -Mike

The large cartridge is black, the smaller cartridge is the photo cartridge.  There are a few things to check:
Make sure the proper media type is selected in the driver.  If you are mostly printing on plain paper make sure to select Plain Paper in the driver rather than Automatic.  It is possible for Automatic to misidentify the paper and think it is using photo paper.  When printing to photo paper the black cartrdige will not be used, only the photo and color cartridges.
In the driver settings for "Print in grayscale" select "Black ink only".

    i have reloaded the drivers
it works fine out of preview and lightroom

Print mode should give you choice of Color or Black. Black means black ink only.
This will not give you a good looking print as it will be grainy and hard to control.
Consider using Quadtone RIP which will incorporate all needed colors to create a proper grayscale print with proper tones.
Quadtone RIP will probably offer the needed settings for this but it might require finding some files on the net.
Imageprint RIP is very good for this but is quite expensive.

  • My HP Envy 4500 does not print text in black ink

I bought my printer this summer, it is only 5 months old.
Now it does not print black ink. Text in black does not appear when printing, every other colors appears.
I've cleaned printerhead with software installed (HP doctor), but it did not solve the problem...
I used the CD when I installed the printer/drivers, and I have updatet software when asked by "update manager".
I have not had this problem earlier, it has just occured last weeks...
What can be missing here? Can someone help?
If the printerhead is broken, can I have a replacement sent to me, or can I pick one up at the store I bought the printer?

    Hi @jb-thom69
i appreciate the efforts you have made to resolve the issue. At this point, I suggest calling HP.
If you are in Canada or US call 800 474 6836, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.
