Will recovering lion from recovery hd wipe my personal documents, such as iPhoto library etc?

I feel that after two days of debugging, my only option is to reinstall lion. I need to know if this will wipe my personal documents. Can anyone tell me?
I will be reinstalling lion from the lion recovery hd.
Thanks.

I probably should have elaborated in the first instance, but I have said it all in another thread.
The short version is that my osx 10.7.2 has become more and more corrupted over the past few days.
I can log in but the system is so unresponsive that it is unusable.
I have booted from a lion installation on a FireWire drive and once I am on, I can browse to and see all the files on my hd with no problem HOWEVER despite being able to see them, access them etc.... I can't copy them to anywhere. Keeps copying a small part of the file and then stopping with a error -36
Hence the reason I was asking if I could recover the os without backing up.

Is there a way of viewing photos from a USB stick without adding them to my iPhoto Library? I am using OS Snow Leopard.

Use the Preview application. If you have it in your dock you can drag a group of photos to the icon and they'll open with the first picture large and the rest as thumbnails to the side. Use the buttons at the top to go to the next picture and zoom in or out.

  • Reinstalling Mac OS X Lion from recovery encounter Problem

I am trying to install my OS X from recovery. When I select reinstall in Utilities and then click on continue, after a while it says that: " your disk cannot save the installation information please contact apple. please tell me what can I do

If you have erased the disk, then be sure you have used the proper schema:
Partition type must be GUID; Format must be Mac OS Extended, Journaled. Are you doing this from the Recovery HD? If so, then see:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Can't download Lion from Recovery Disc

So this all started when i wanted to upgrade to Mountain Lion. I went to the app store and purchased the app and the download started. It took about 45 minutes and when it finished and I tried to install it failed because it said the download was corrupt. I tried three times and had the same result each time. I started troubleshoot and found somewhere where it said to try fixing disc permissions. I went into disc utils and tried to run the verify disc and it failed. I then tried running verify disc and that failed. So then I logged into Recovery Disc and ran Verify disc and it failed again. So I tried running Fix Disc and that failed. At that point I was not able to boot up to anything other than Recovery Disc. If it tried booting up it would start and run for about 20 seconds and then shutdown. At this point I decided to reformat my disc and re-install Lion. I wiped my disc and then used the re-install lion link to start that process. It would tell me it was downloading nessecary components and would start counting down from 1:45 hr it would hit 0 and the counter would start over. It does this about 3 time and then fails saying in could not download the components. I have tried it twice and had the same result. I am now on a differnt computer hoping to get some advice around what to do now. Anyone have any ideas around what I should try next. I am kind of stuck and getting really frustrated. This is the second time I have had major disc related issues. I never had these issues on my windows laptops.

Well in all fairness thinks like this happen to both Windows and Mac OS X.
I suspect your drive is failing. That is why the verify and repair fails and that the original download got corrupted and why now it restarts because it really can't save anything to that drive.
You could Restart from recovery and restart the download point it to an external drive and see if it completes and installs Lion on the external. If it does then good bet the internal drive is TOAST and needs to be replaced.

  • Will downloading Lion from the App Store (previously purchased) while on Mountain Lion erase my current OS?

    All,
I'm trying to download Lion from the App Store to make a bootable external hard drive. My concern is that the app store gives me a warning: "OS X 10.8 is already installed on this computer. Are you sure you want to download OS X 10.7?"
I'm not sure what this means and I would prefer not to risk erasing my current operating system. Does anyone have an idea?
    Thank you in advance.

Futhermore, I can't believe that the App Store allows you to download OS X Lion while you are in OS X Mountain Lion, because normally the App Store gives an error because you are running a newer Mac OS X.
If you just download OS X Lion, you won't lose OS X Mountain Lion, because just the installer will be downloaded onto the Applications folder. When the download finishes, the installer will show up, so close it, and use Lion Diskmaker to create an external drive with OS X Lion > http://liondiskmaker.com
As you are running OS X Mountain Lion, I recommend you to make an external drive with OS X Mountain Lion instead, if you can. That's because probably you will want to reinstall OS X Mountain Lion and not Lion

  • Problems reinstalling Lion from Recovery service

I'm trying to reinstall Lion from the Apple Recovery service but keep getting told after 10 hours downloading, that installation has failed.
I'm having to do this as my machine crashed a few days ago and lost access to the operating system. I did not loose files as the machine was Bootcamped and i could access from there.
Initially, I was told that the hard drive needed repairing, which has now happened and it's passed all it's tests via the Disk Utility but still no installation.
I tried booting from a usb and the download recovery but no sucess.
    Can anyone advise.

    John,

    Yes, exactly.
I think that OS X Internet Recovery would be necessary only if you were to attempt a Lion installation with a completely empty HD, implying that even a Recovery partition has not been created. Your USB flash drive is the way to cope in that circumstance. If you can install Lion by booting the recovery partition as you described, it seems to me that it is all that is necessary and there is nothing to fix, despite the error message you see.
I'm surprised that Internet Recovery works at all, given that your Mac is not one of those allegedly eligible to use it.
Without a similar 2006 iMac to test, I can only speculate that the "abysmal distribution system" as baltwo describes it just doesn't work well with earlier Macs, and that Apple may not have tested it extensively with them. If I were you I would rely upon that USB installer much more than OS X Recovery or OS X Internet Recovery. I prefer not to rely upon any installation method that can possibly result in "the server is not available at this time" or such nonsense, but that is the direction in which Apple has been going for a long time.
An OS X installation log exists at /var/log/ that you can examine using Console, probably named "install.log". Deciphering it is another challenge.

  • Unable to reinstall Mountain Lion from recovery partition

    Hi there,
I have formatted my main HDD partition and then boot from recovery partition. I have a MacBook Pro 2011 series. I have reinstalled my Mountain Lion following on screen instructions. But when It's says is OK and 100% installed and begin restart the system, it is unable to boot and automatically boot from recovery partition again.
Can anybody help me? What I have to do?
       Thanks in advance.
       vzuritae.

Why did you start this process in the first place? Was there something wrong with the original install of Mt Lion? Like your system wouldn't startup anymore?
I suspect it is a hardware problem and may be the drive is failing.
Is your Mac a Early or Late 2011 model. Did it come with Lion Pre-installed?
If it came with Lion Preinstalled then you can use the Online Internet Recovery system to first reinstall Lion. At startup hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a spinning globe in the center of the screen. From that screen select Disk Utility and Re-Partition the drive as One partition. Then close DU and select Reinstall Mac OS X. If after the install of Lion is downloaded and finishes the install your system still refuses to boot up properly then you have a hardware problem and only Apple can fix a hardware problem.

  • How do I recover the original jpg photo files from my computer? They are embedded in the iPhoto Library and I cannot see the actual file.

I am trying to locate the original jpg or photo files that I uploaded from my camera. I know that the photos are there, because they show up in my iPhoto Library. Where can I go to find the original file ex: DSCN1242.jpg or OLM4564.jpg ?

Select the photo in iPhoto and use the command "File > Export" and set the "Kind" in the Export panel to "Original". That will write a copy of the original to a folder you can access in the Finder.
The command "File > Reveal in Finder" will show you the original inside the iPhoto Library, but you must not access the files this way. If you access them from other apps using the Finder, you will corrupt your library.

  • Dan from iCloud Tech Support says that documents such as .pdf, .doc, .xls, etc. will NOT be stored on iCloud!  Huh???

Called Tech Support because of 2 problems:
         1. Several of my documents have disappeared.  This includes some .pdf, .doc, and .xls files.
         2. Others are old copies of files that were updated, but all my changes were lost.
Was informed by Dan in Tech Support that "documents will not be stored on iCloud."  He explained further that Word, Excel, PDF, etc. will not be stored on the Cloud--only music files, Pages, iPhoto, etc. will be.
Is this true?  If so, this is stunningly bad.  And if it is true that iCloud isn't going to store documents, then why did it touch (i.e. lose, revert) them in the first place??  So all document storage will be on local or external drives now?

    Dan is not entirely correct.
If you install Goodreader this app WILL allow those documents to be stored on your icloud account within a specially created Goodreader container.
Apple do allow third parties to use the conduit between desktop and iOS apps, however only a few third parties have implemented this todate..
What icloud is NOT is unlimited remote storage, its more rather a syncing conduit.
If you are looking at an idisk replacement do try Dropbox for that.
Personally I employ BOTH methods in parallel at the moment as icloud remains very much a work in progress .
I will probably transfer more to using the icloud route when the next desktop version of Pages is released and hopefully incorporates built in icloud sync functionality. The current requirement to utilize a web browser on your desktop to upload/download is a clutch !
    What does icloud do
1 Sync photo images across iOS devices and with iPhoto or Aperture 3 on your Mac or with your Pictures folder in Win7
2 Combines calendars between iOS and Mac Osx or  Outlook on Win7
3 Combines Address book between ios and Mac OSx or Outlook on Win7
    4. Sync iWork- Documents in the cloud (Pages Numbers and Keynote) across iOS devices and upload/download to Mac or PC via icloud.com in web browser.
5.Use find my iPhone/iPad/mac security functionality
    6.Remote backup of iOS devices.
    7. ITunes in the cloud (Stores all your music in icloud) plus subject to subscription iTunes match.
    8.ios app sync across devices.
    Plus new in 2012
Invite friends to view photos and or movies via email link.
    What it do not do
Allow you to drag and drop any file type from Finder/Explorer to remote storage (a la idisk or Drop box)- This may change as the service develops.

  • HT4718 I have successfully upgraded to Mtn Lion on my Mac OS X10.8.3 Desk Top and am missing several Apps - such as IPhoto, IMovie, etc. What's up w/that?

I recently upgraded my Snow Leopard OS X to Mtn Lion, vers. 10.8.3 and all seems well, however, I seem to be missing several (many?) apps which I had before and which I believe came with my Mac OS X desktop when I purchased it in 2012. Most importantly, I'm missing IPhoto and IMovie. The "Apps" folder is certainly much smaller now than before and I don't seem to have provision to re-install my apps - several of which are absolutely essential.
I did go to the App Store, signed in and looked at my purchases. They did NOT include IMovie and IPhoto = which are absolutely essential to my use of this Mac - and the reason I purchased it in the first place.
If you have suggestions, please and give me some ideas. I am a 73 year old Disabled Veteran and def need help!
    Thanks to one and all.

Since your Mac came with Snow Leopard preinstalled you will need to use the disks that came with it to reinstall iPhoto and iMovie with a custom install of the Installed Bundled software.  You should have a disk similar to #3 in the screenshot (lower right hand corner).
Do a custom install of the iApps you need and apply the necessary updaters from the Apple Downloads web page.

  • Cannot sign in to apple ID when installing Lion from recovery

I cannot seem to be able to sign into my Apple ID when trying to restore my MacBook pro from a recovery pen drive created by the new software that creates such things. What I suspect is happening is that my apple ID is a UK App store account and I am trying to reinstall here in my home in Germany, but there is no way to specify what country I bought the Lion OS from and it will detect I'm in Germany and try to log into the German store. If this is the case then how bloody silly, if not then why can I not sign in. Wifi is working fine and it does connect when it's in the installer so connection to the Internet is not the problem. Please help as I now have no OS on my laptop only a recovery partition and this pen drive.

I have the same issues, but not on my iphone, but on my laptop. My phone works fine, though. I have 7.0.4 as well.

  • Reinstalling Mac OS X Lion from Recovery problem

So I've decided to sell my 2007 Macbook (Black) to someone else, but when I tried to
wipe it (I already did it successfully) and reinstall Mac OS X Lion, it comes up with
"This item is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later"
It happened today, I'll try again tomorrow since it says "Please try again later"
but I need a quick solution because I need the money! Help please!

If you plan to sell or give away this computer, then you must install the original version of OS X that it came with pre-installed. That was 10.4.9 or 10.5 depending upon which model you have. Get out the installer discs that came with the computer and use them to erase the disk and install a fresh copy of OS X. Or you can do the same using the retail Snow Leopard DVD.
    Clean Install of OS X
         1. Boot the computer using the OS X Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Before it restarts just shut it down.
Be sure you also de-authorize the computer and sign out of your iCloud account.
