Will reinstall a program causing duplicate files?

Dear All, I am a new to mac and just bought Macbook Pro with OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4) for my college use. Together with the system, I purchase Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac and now when I installed the program, I receive a notice that quit.app cannot be open due to some security issue which I had solved at the security preference after the installation complete. At the end of the installation, the installation was displayed as successful and the microsoft office icons like Word, PowerPoint, etc appear on the dock.
Now, after I fix the security issue, I directly run the installation again due to the process quit.app cannot run and this time the whole process runs well but when the process complete, I receive double Word, PowerPoint, etc icons on my dock which I had to remove one by one. My question is will my second installation create duplicate files just like the icons on my dock to the first installation or will it replace the previous installation files? Thanks.

It shouldn't but that's easy to check. In your Applications folder Under Microsoft Office Folder check and see if you have duplicates of the apps themselves.

What I read in the PDF version of the manual (while I was waiting for my plane this afternoon), it seems pretty comprehensive. I was particularly interested in what it had to say about creating your own templates.
Supposedly, it will remember if I left invisibles showing in templates (one of my big complaints with Pages 1). I'll find out soon enough. I must say that opening my two documents I use for answering posts here in discussions sure did open faster & navigating an 11-page table was much faster.
Another good thing I noticed, the font used for the serial number is much clearer & there were no confusing characters - O/0, S/5, etc.

Will Reinstalling OS X Lion Erase Files

Since upgrading to OS X Lion my Mac's performace has really slowed down and I want to resintall the OS to see if it will imporve performance. The issues is that I don't know if the "Reinstall Mac OS X" option in the Recovery partition will erase all my data (ie photos, movies, docs etc...). I've searched multiple forums for answeres but I haven't been able to get a clear answer (some say yes, others say no) and none of Apple's documentation states whether or not the users data will be perserved during reinstallation.
Can someone verify that "Reinstall Mac OS X" option in the recovery partition will perserve all user data?

Well it all depends on what you mean by Re-Install the OS.
If you Re-install Over the Top of your current install no other files should be touched, removed, deleted or changed. But as stated above always have a backup just in case.
A reinstall like this really doesn't do much and IMHO will not improve the overall performace of the computer.
The we have a REAL REINSTALL.
That is where you Erase the drive, Wipe it clean of all info, data. OS, programs and all user data. Then Re-Install the OS and your programs then copy your personal data back onto the system from your time machine backup or from a backup you made of those files manually.
This type of Re-Install may or may not improve performance but at least you know that nothing left over from the upgrade is causing the slower then expected performance.
To do this type of Re-Install first make sure you have your files backed up. You have the original system disc that came with your system, especially the Applications DVD that came with your system and a good fast internet connection as Lion has to be downloaded from the internet (unless yo made a Lion Install USB thumb drive).

Sync issue...duplicate file found

Have 3 iphones on one itunes account. One phone will not sync. Says duplicate file found. How do I correct? I have tried restoring. I am not using any 3rd party software. My daughter lost her 3G. I got a 4S and gave her my 3G. My 3G was the primary on the account. I think this is the root of the problem but don't know how to correct. Should I restore her settings and set up again as a new phone?

I am having a related problem. (Mac OS 10.8.3)
My DVD-ROM Content is causing the DVD image build and DVD Master build to show "0 Objects" in the resulting disc image .iso and the physical DVD. There is not even a Video TS folder "visible".
However, the physical Video DVD will launch the DVD Player and play as expected when inserted into a computer. The DVD-ROM Content is of course not visible in the Finder as mentioned before.
I have authored a second DVD, also with DVD-ROM Content (Adobe PDF documents) and there doesn't seem to be a problem...
... I think that I have found the source of the Problem:
File names for the DVD-ROM Content must adhere to a standard naming convention.
-NO SPECIAL CHARACTERS-. (Blank spacing between words doesn't seem to cause this problem)

iTunes64Setup.exe, even after multiple times of uninstalling and reinstalling with even a fresh download crashes with the message:
"iTunes has stopped working. A problem [unspecified] caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you IF a solution is available." I cannot get out of this loop and it renders my iPad HD useless. I tried calling the Apple Store but was referred by an automated system to this web site. I tried looking up the problem in the FAQ but it didn't help.

Whenever I connect to the iTunes store i receive an error message "iTunes has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." This causes iTunes to close. I am using iTunes version 10.5.0.142 on a Windows Vista (64) PC. I have reinstalled iTunes selecting the "repair" option and also uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. Any help will be deeply appreciated. Thank you. Below is the result of the diagnositc.

Same exact thing with me. And no help from apple. Just dropped nearly $600 and cannot get a decent working setup.
Apple's only suggestion was to uninstall iTunes and Quicktime, and re-install... of course (the I.T. Crowd tactic).

I had this exact same problem. I found this fix and it worked for me.
Step 1:
Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support and copy the filen named QTMovieWin.dll.
Step 2:
Browse and past that file into C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes.
Hope this helps you. I wish I could remember where I saw this originally so I could thank them.

(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page).

After clicking one of the circled links, you should be taken to another page, and after a few seconds you should see a download dialog appear for the msicuu2.exe file. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like for me in Firefox:

When the dialog appears, choose to save the file.
(2) Go to the Downloads area for your Web browser. Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. I've had the student version of the Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium software for several years now.
When I received my Windows 8 computer I installed the software with no issue.
Last week when I tried opening Photoshop I get the following error: "Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 has stopped working.A problem caused by the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
I deactivated and uninstalled the entire Creative Suite then reinstalled it. I am able to open the other programs, but still receive the same message for Photoshop.
What can I do?

I found the issue was with the Nik Filters I was using. The filters were messing with Photoshop's initializing. I uninstalled and reinstalled the filters and now Photoshop works like a charm.

The latter. I cant tell you how many times I've reinstalled lion! all your apps will be fine!
Things that will change are system graphics if you altered them with something like candybar or did it manually.
Having said that, you should always backup your stuff with time machine incase something does happen.
This is a very important step which will insure the safety of your files while doing things like updating or installing the OS.
Please exercise caution when doing things with a Hard Drive.
