Will reinstalling Mac OS X Mountain Lion wipe my Hard Drive?

I want to reinstall Mac OS X Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro 2012. I have many apps and files on my Mac's hard drive and I was wondering what would happen to them if I were to reinstall Mountain Lion.

That's cool, but just remember, that depending on a computer and it's configuration, application load times etc all run a little differently. (SSD drives are much faster at loading applications than traditional HDDs. Also, if you hard drive is quite full, it can run slower.)
Before I would proceed with a full reinstall the OS, I would run Disk Utility in the Applications/Utilities folder and repair disk permissions.
To do so, I would reboot my computer, make sure no applications are running, run DU, reboot again and then see if the performance has improved.

  • Unable to install Mountain Lion on my hard drive

I'm trying to upgrade my early 2008 mac pro from Leopard to Mountain Lion using a bootable usb drive but I'm having trouble doing so.  When I try installing mountain lion to my hard drive (Mac Drive 1) - The hard drive is greyed out and says 'you can't upgrade this version of OS X'.  Yet it looks like I can install mountain lion onto my second hard drive (Mac Drive 2) for some odd reason.
Here's the details for my mac drive 1 which I'm having trouble with (I noticed the volume format is greyed out on disk utility as well).....
And here's the mac drive 2 info which I don't want to install mountain lion onto but looks like I can....
Any help would be much appreciated!  Thanks a lot.

I can't answer the bad hard drive question without some guessing. Not that smart.
Do you have a bootable copy of the Mountain Lion installer?
If not download the following. The site says it will work with 10.6:
    http://blog.gete.net/lion-diskmaker-us/
That program will allow you to make a bootable DVD or USB with Mountain Lion on it.
You can boot off of it, erase the disk, and then install Mountain Lion.
I think you should be able to reinstall from carbon copy cloner, but I haven't used that program.  During the setup it will ask you if you want to import files, but I don't know if it can read carbon copy cloner. I know it can read a Time Machine backup.
A clean install is generally better anyway.
If you get Mountain Lion installed, not everything works like it did in 10.5/10.6. For an example, scrolling is reversed, but you can change it back to the way it is in 10.5/10.6 in System Preferences. After spending some time in System Preferences, my computer acts pretty much the way it always did.

  • Looking to move data from OSX 9 to Mountain Lion using external hard drive?

Looking to move data from OSX 9 to Mountain Lion using external hard drive?

Thanks.  I'd like to get rid of this OSX 9 after retrieving a few files.  If I wanted to erase it's hard drive before I do so, would powering off then on again and immediately start tapping the F10 button do the trick as it does with a PC?

  • ReInstall Mac OS X Mountain Lion

    Hello,
I bought an iMac from a guy on eBay with mountain lion on it. When I go into the recovery partition to re install mountain lion, it asks for my apple ID and password but then it says I need to buy it. What The Heck??

If the seller stated in his listing that Mountain Lion is included, then you must contact the seller to get a refund for whatever it costs to get your Mac's operating system up to the level stated in the listing. If he doesn't have the Snow Leopard disks (and it is a Snow Leopard machine), it is going to cost $50 at least to get the Machine to OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion
If he does not help you, then contact PayPal (if that was your payment method) and eBay, and give the seller a negative rating (which you can adjust if he finally assists you).
I just sold my MacBook Pro, and once I figured out that I had listed it with ML, but it really came with Lion (and you used to just be able to ship your Macs with whatever OSX was on it), I included an Apple App Store gift card for the amount of Mountain Lion so that the buyer could upgrade. The buyer was thankful.
You have an incompetent seller to have not known this.

  • How can I reinstall Mountain Lion on new hard drive?

I've had to install a new hard drive as old one was failing.
Have loaded Snow Leopard from disc onto the new drive but can't install Mountain Lion which I was running prior to drive failure; very frustrated.
    Have tried several options.
    1. Tried to reboot from OS X Utilities but whenever I restart, holding the cmd + R keys, I can only ever get the standard screen. I've tried pressing keys early in restart, later in restart, keys on either side of the keyboard, cmd + alt/option + R but still can't get to the OS X Utilities.
    2. Having given up on 1 I've tried to download ML from my purchase history in iTunes. I can see the purchase recorded but there appears to be no way to get to a reload option - at least not in the iTunes loaded from Snow Leopard
    3. I tried downloading ML updates, hoping that might allow me to bypass 1 and 2. The download wasn't recognised by my machine.
    4. I've be willing to just buy the **** OS again from scratch but iTunes won't allow me to do that either, at least not using my current Apple ID.
Does anyone have any bright ideas? I hate bloody computers.

Do you have any suggestions why I can't open OS X  Utilities.
    Thanks,

How old is your Mac, if it came with 10.6 installed it is too old to have Internet Recovery (command-option-R) And as it has a new hard drive you won't be able to use Recovery (command-R) either until a new copy of Mountain Lion is installed and ceates a recovery partition on the drive.

  • Unable to Load Mac OS Mountain Lion On new Hard Drive

So recently my internal Hard Drive in my Mid 2012 Mac book Pro has stopped functioning, so i made a trip to best by to get a new one. But once i boot from the  my Mountain Lion Disk and select Disk Utility I am unable to format my drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I have tried going to the partition Tab and selecting GUID in the setting Option but i still get the error, Partition Failed with the Error : File System Formatter Failed. I've tried Verifying and Repairing the Drive but it says my Drive is Ok. Formatting my Hard Drive to any other Type other then Mac OS Extended Will work.

Try going to the partition if there is one, not the top level drive, and select the erase tab.

  • What's the difference between choosing "reinstall mountain Lion" and erasing hard drive and booting from base system?

I would like to know what the difference would be with the following two scenarios, both starting from the command + R menu at startup:
    1. Chose the picture of the mountain lion "reinstall osx mountain lion
    2. Erase the main hard drive, and then boot from "OSX base system"
If someone upgraded my macbook to mountain lion, did that upgrade also include a recovery partition and is that what one of these options is?

  • Will downloading Mountain Lion reset your hard drive?

Do I need to back-up my hard drive before downloading mountian lion?

Yes, a backup before an upgrade of the operating system is always a good idea.
If everything works perfectly, nothing should happen to your data. I don't know about you but I am never going to trust my data to everything working perfectly.

  • Mountain Lion download corrupts hard drive!!

I am trying to re-download Mountain Lion to create a boot jump drive so I can reinstall Mountain Lion clean.  After download I can not open "mount" the installEDS.dmg file.  Error pops up stating invalid checksums and I can not complete the process of creating the boot jump drive.  I check Disk Utility/Verify Disk and see these results: Disk Utility/Verify Disk reports, Incorrect block count for file installEDS.dmg, Volume Bitmap needs minor repair, The volume is now corrupt and needs repair.
So.. I restart the computer through recovery hard drive option so that I can repair the disk.  I am able to successfully repair the disk. The computer is still working.
I repeat the Mountain Lion down load process, attempt to create the boot jump drive and again.... installEDS.dmg will not mount, invalid checksums.  I check Disk Utility/Verify Disk.   The volume is now corrupt and needs repair.  I repeated this 4 times (I have a slow connection DSL 6mb).  Same results! I repeated once on a different day (App Store server problems maybe?).  Same results!
The reason I want to do a clean install of Mountain Lion is because I have constant kernel panics.  Kernel panics are (4 to 5) in an hour. When this happens I attempt to restart the computer.  After second computer restart (kernel panic upon first restart attempt), the computer will last a day without a kernel panic!  I have attempted to address the kernel panics, (removing 3rd party programs, latest updates, etc.) I can not pin down the problem. I have experienced kernel panics after sleep, kernel panics when shutting down or restart, kernel panics after turning off blue tooth, basically kernel panics under every application so far.  I have ran the hardware test, (from snow leopard CD), no hardware errors.  Ran memtest from single user mode, no memory errors.  I do realize that these programs may not catch bad hardware.. and will be contacting OWC for memory and drive support as another avenue. Computer specifications are:
MacBook Pro 7.1, Mid2010, 2.4 Ghz, Snow Lepoard 10.6.8, OWC 8g Memory purchased Jan 2012 (Offically 4 supported), OWC 240g SSD purchased May 2012  Everything worked flawless until mountain lion upgrade!
So I would like to reinstall Mountain Lion clean, but can not, because I can not down load a clean copy of Mountain Lion.  My only thought is to install Snow Leopard on another drive and re-download Mountain Lion on that.
Any thoughts on these questions:  Is the application corrupted?  Does my current install of Mountain Lion corrupt new downloads? Is it my hardware? (Will schedule a visit with Apple store as well, when I can get to Chicago)
In the mean time anyone else experiencing this?  If so any other suggestions?  Any help would be much appreciated!

  • AECS6 won't open in Mountain Lion on secondary hard drive

I have After Effects CS6, file version (no dvds). Using a 4,1 Nehalem Mac Pro, Snow Leopard, w/2 x 2.6 GHz quad core Intel Xeon, 18GB RAM, NVIDIA GTX285 card. A few months after installing AECS6, I bought an internal hard drive and put OS Mountain Lion onto it. When I try to open AECS6 after booting from the new hard drive,  I get a series of error messages including "Quicktime is not installed" and "unknown error". The program crashes before opening.  It still works fine on the original hard drive w/Snow Leopard. I've googled and found a lot of suggestions for helping AECS6 start in Mountain Lion after the "Quicktime is not installed" error message, but none of them seem to work for me. And I'm not sure that it isn't related to the partition. I copied the root AECS6 folder into the new hard drive's Applications folder, still get the same errors. Quicktime 7 and 10 are installed on both drives, along with the appropriate codecs. I know that the codecs are properly installed on the new drive because Nuke can access them.
    Thanks for any help, people.

Using MA for moving Logic Pro/Express across is not a good idea.... as you have found.. because often all kinds of weird issues can arise..
I would suggest you do a full uninstall of Logic.Express. (I assume you have Logic Express as there isn't an app called Logic Pro Express) using this post to guide you.. (its for Logic Pro but much of what is written applies to LE too..)
    http://www.logicprohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30524
    Then...
You need to reinstall Logic Express via the DVDs (Remembering to do a software update immediately as the DVD version does not work with Lion or Mountain Lion..without updates)
Next re-install all 3rd party plugins (not forgetting to register them via whatever means they require) and sample libraries if you use them..
Now your projects should work just fine
It's a long job I know but it is the best and most reliable way of making sure Logic Pro/Express works fine now and in the future..

  • Download mountain lion on replaced hard drive

I need to download mountain lion on a replaced hard drive. how can I do this?

If your Mac came with 10.7 or 10.8 installed, you'll have access to Internet recovery - reboot holding down cmd-R and follow the prompts.
If you started on 10.6, you must reinstall that OS first and then use the App Store to install 10.8.

  • How do I download mountain lion onto new hard drive

My IMac 2.4  mid 2007 was starting to get very slow in opening applications. I rebooted the machine, it displayed the apple and then a circle with a line through it and would go no further. I have put it down to the hard drive, and have purchased a new one. My question is, how do I install mountain lion that I have already purchased to the new hard drive. I would appreciate any help on the matter

You need to get your computer up to at least 10.6, using the original installer for your Mac, or a retail copy of 10.6.3. Then update to 10.6.8, and using the App Store, sign in with your AppleID, go to Purchases, and re-download and install 10.8.

  • How to install Mountain Lion on blank hard drive

I bought a used macbook with the understanding that the hard drive crashed and I had to completely replace it. I've bought and installed a new, blank hard drive in the macbook and I was wondering if I could purchase mountain lion from the apple store and install it on a completely blank hard drive. When I first booted it up, it takes to to a screen that asks me for my wifi password and has an icon for internet recovery. I've clicked on it and after a while it shows me a globe with a question mark and the website for apple support. Please tell me I haven't already messed it up :S

You need to install Snow Leopard or Lion first to install Mountain Lion online via Mac App Store.

  • Battery life drops after Mountain Lion and then hard drive crashes. Coincidence?

On October 20, I purchased and downloaded Mountain Lion for my 2009 MacBook Pro. I soon began seeing a decrease in battery life. When hovering over the battery icon to check the time left, I noticed it said "Service Battery". The notebook otherwise seemed to operate normally. I should also note that I've never had any other problems with this MacBook Pro. By November 18, without any other problems, the hard drive crashed and was irreparable, costing me over $200 for replacement. This should not be a part that needs replacement on a 3 year old computer. Coincidence that these events happened so close in sequence, I think not. If the battery problems are known to Apple through the discussions on the Support Communities, why hasn't Apple issued a patch 4 months after the release of Mountain Lion? The new hard drive was installed running Snow Leopard and I intend to keep that OS. It's really a shame because ML has some nice features that SL does not offer. I also will not be purchasing any new Apple OS until the program has been out at least a year to allow Apple to work out the known, potentially costly problems that they seem to knowingly ignore. I'm a loyal Apple customer but this incident will have me thinking twice before running out to purchase any of their products and software immediately upon release or even a few months after.

Have you followed these instructions, specifically formatting your new HDD?

  • Can't install mountain lion onto new hard drive after old one had to be replaced

My macbook pro, purchased 12/11, had a faulty hard drive.  We thankfully were still under warranty and had it replaced.  I then accessed the old drive via USB connector to reinstall my pictures and some file folders and apps to the new hard drive.  Now I am trying to reinstall the mountain lion update, and it says I can't install the the hard drive that appears as a choice as I use it for time machine backups?  Also, when the laptop tries to do a time machine backup, that stalls out as it says the hard drive is on the do not back up list, which incidentally won't let me select it to take it off of the do not back up list.  Help!!!
