Will repairing Permissions disrupt any currently running services.

I have a server that is set up running DNS, Open Directory, and Software Update services. It is the latest update, 10.5.8. I just wanted to know if anyone knows if running a permissions repair will disrupt any of these services.
Thanks

it won't interrupt these services
we run permissions repair on live machines all the time.. no problems.

    After I repaired permissions, in my user account (not admin), no applications run?
    Anyone know what I did wrong, and how I can fix it?
    Thanks
    it just stalls for ages and doesnt run. Only firefox and adium X is running. ...

    Yes, you can boot up from an external drive. When you get it your will first need to prep the drive before installing OS X on it:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
    After the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with the OS X installation. When it has finished and rebooted you will be running from the external drive. You should then be able to fix things on the internal drive.

  • Help with Repairing Permissions G4 iBook 10.5

    My daughter is visiting and I tried to use the Disk Utility to Repair the
    Permissions on her G4 iBook running OS X 10.5. It cranked and cranked but
    never did repair the permission or really fail either.
    It still works but I would feel better if I could get the permissions repaired.
    Also, the screen really seems dim compared to the new 13-inch MacBook Pro.
    Is there a fix to crank up the brightness on a G4 iBook?

    Ah, yes! The leopard disc utility. What a crock of poop that is. You can let it run overnight and it probably still won't finish. It only takes 90 seconds in Tiger. The best thing to do is to install Onyx and let it take care of the disc maintenance.
    After you install Onyx run 'Automation'. It will repair permissions, clear caches and run the cron scripts in one command. Also, it will only take 15 minutes or so to complete a full string of maintenance tasks. Give up on the disc utility in Leopard.

  • Obtaining list of currently running Windows NT services

    Hello,
    I'm writing a network monitoring app using a third party SNMP API and am wondering if there is any way we can retrieve a list of currently running services on Windows box such as IIS, RPC, Workstations, etc.. The MIBs supplied with Microsoft only seem to report statistcs and whether the service is active, instead of if it's started or stopped.
    Thanks!
    Makoto

    I just found the articles on WMI on MSDN. I guess issuing periodical JDBC/ODBC query would do the trick. The boxes we're dealing with are all Windows 2000 servers, so WMI seems to solve the problem.
    Thanks for the insight.
    mk.
    In terms of SNMP one can only hope that the MIB does
    what it says it does.
    Other than that the Web Management Interface is how
    you are supposed to get stuff like that on windows
    these days. However that applies to newer OSes only.
    Other than that you could always write your own app
    and install it on each box.

  • REpairing permissions - very time consuming - why ?

    Hi Forum
    After installed leopard my Diskutility takes several minutes to repair permissions.
    Any suggestions to why ?
    yours
    Bo
    Ps. I've made an upgrade from a clean Tiger 10.4.10

    Bo,
    Beginning is very RAM-demanding: on my iMac G4 it takes more than 40 minutes!
    We don't know yet whether this is temporarily "clumsy" state of the new young OS.
    Let's hope there will be something implemented in the next free updates,
    and let's hope the confusing and worrying strange messages will disappear too.
    Safe enough tip to kill time:
    Do not interrupt the process, but you can use Safari while it is running.

  • Repairing permissions relevant to Apple apps. only?

    I installed Macromedia Flash Player 9 and Firefox 2 today, and tried to repair permissions because Firefox was running slow. I accidently selected the main disk rather than the partition, Macintosh HD, tried to repair permissions and got an error message saying that quitting would render the disk unusable, or something along those lines. I clicked stop repair twice and eventually had to quit out because there was no other choice. I hope this won't pose a problem later on, assuming that was the wrong disk to repair and it didn't go all the way. I'm slightly paranoid that my computer won't startup normally if I shut it off. Although I did restart after this happened and everything seems fine at this moment.
    - Is repairing permissions really only necessary for system updates and Apple-based application updates (iPhoto, iTunes)?
    - Also, should I try again or is it best to just let it go for now, since it was only third-party apps that I'd updated?
    iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.3.5)

    You are correct. Repairing permissions will have no impact on any applications or software that doesn't have a receipt saved.
    When you are repairing your hard drive or permissions you should not quit the activity until it finishes. I recommend doing the following:
    Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    This may be overkill but it can't hurt anything.
    Under normal circumstances you should not have to repair permissions. The reason you see it recommended so much is that it's a precaution that costs little to do and in some rare cases may actually fix something.

  • Disk utility - repair permissions keeps reporting same issues

    my machine has been unstable for a while, and i thought it was time to repair permissions.
    normally, after being run a couple of times, there are no more to be repaired. however, this time, the same 35 lines of permissions being changed are displayed over and over. also after rebooting.
    1. why aren't the permissions finally corrected?
    most issues concern 'System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/Contents', 'System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iPhotoAccess.framework/Versions/A/Resources/P lugins' and a couple of warnings that suid-files are changed and won't be repaired.
    2. i never used front row, - what's happening?
    3. what's with the suid-files?
    4. will reinstalling leopard help my situation?
    5. if i use time machine to restore, how can i be sure the problems don't persist? or 'get back in'?

    why aren't the permissions finally corrected?
    Apple changed the structure of some of its packages without updating the repair permissions mechanism. Until and unless they release a patch, nothing done will stop those messages from appearing. Disregard them.
    i never used front row, - what's happening?
    You installed a package which updated it.
    what's with the suid-files?
    Those messages are normal.

  • Stopping a currently running DAQ task for m-series

    I'm running a hardware timed analog input data acquisition task on a PCI-6229 m-series DAQ card that takes 200 us.  Every 250 us the program reads the data and restarts the task.  The difficulty is that the program sometimes has a late start and the next time the thread reads the task is still in progress.  I'd like to guarantee the task is stopped every time the program reads the data.  I've tried the following three sets of commands when the thread wakes up:
    Attempt 1:
    if( board->Joint_Status_2.readAI_Scan_In_Progress_St() )
         board->AI_Command_1.writeAI_Disarm(1);
         board->AI_Command_1.flush();
    Attempt 2:
    if( board->Joint_Status_2.readAI_Scan_In_Progress_St() )
         board->AI_Status_1.setAI_STOP_St(kTrue);
         board->AI_Status_1.flush();
    Attempt 3:
    if( board->Joint_Status_2.readAI_Scan_In_Progress_St() )
         board->AI_Mode_1.setAI_Start_Stop(kTrue);
         board->AI_Mode_1.flush();
    They seem to randomly work.  Sometimes the task stops immediately, sometimes it reads a few more times, and sometimes it just keeps reading.  The positive part of these commands are that the task can be restarted by simply issuing the aiStart(board) command again -- most of the time.  Is there something that I can send to the card to reliably stop any currently running AI tasks and at the same time allow the aiStart(board) command to be used to start the next set of readings?
    You may ask why I'm doing this.  I've had a lot of problems losing track of the inputs after 13 hr to several days at 250 kHz.  By restarting the task every loop and clearing the DMA buffer, I can guarantee the first element in the buffer is the first input read.  I'm using DMA so if the task is still running when I send the aiStart(board) command, it can screw up this balance.  You may argue that I should keep track of things more closely, but this system means that if the inputs somehow become switched the next time the thread runs it will automatically correct the problem.  This self-correction is a critical feature.
    Thanks.
    Aaron

    Hi Aaron-
    The bitfields you attempt to write are problematic for a few reasons.  First, AI_Disarm is only safe to use for idle counters and may not work reliably if the acquisition is currently running (which it sounds like you have observed).  AI_STOP_St is a read-only bit, so writing it will have no effect.  Finally, AI_Start_Stop controls an unrelated functionality (essentially, it decides whether an AI_Start -> AI_Stop cycle constitutes a "scan".  This is actually the only mode of the STC2 that makes much sense to use on M Series).
    There are a couple of bitfields in AI_Command_2 that might help.  AI_End_On_SC_TC is a strobe bit that disarms the AI_SC, AI_SI, AI_SI2, and AI_DIV counters when an SC_TC event occurs.  AI_End_On_End_Of_Scan provides the same functionality for when an AI_Stop occurs.  So basically, you could determine a regular interval boundary number of scans to stop on (using End_On_SC_TC) or just stop at the end of the "current" scan (using End_On_End_Of_Scan).
    I haven't tested this, but it should work.  Let me know if you have problems using either of these methods.  Hopefully this helps-

  • How frequently to delete/reset Safari plist & repair permissions?

    Seems I am having to do this about once a week to keep Safari running. Feedback please.

    Safari has had intermittent issues with hanging and slowness loading a page since I've had the machine.
    It obviously shouldn't be like that. Try this:
    The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
    Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
    Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
    Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
    Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
    If not, MacFixit have published a very detailed (very!) article on speeding up a slow Safari, here:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070416000657464
    Many, including me, have also followed the advice given by others here to add DNS codes to their Network Settings, with good results in terms of speed-up:
    Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.220
    208.67.220.222
    Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
    Any improvement?

  • Email duplication, missing email, repair permissions

    My Mail program started acting up today. I began getting duplicate and even triplicate identical emails. Then I discovered I wasn't getting ANY emails from my GF with whom I live (she's in a different room on her computer).
    Baffled, I ran Repair Permissions and that sort of worked - I began getting her emails plus duplicates of other email I'd received earlier in the day. I ran Repair Permissions a second time, not five minutes after the first time, and it found all kinds of things to repair again. How is that possible? Don't things stay repaired?
    It is now running a third straight time (it always says 16 minutes to go and I let it go until it finishes) and it's finding another long list of things (perhaps the same things? I have no clue) to fix.
    Why would things need to be fixed so quickly if they were just fixed? And could the Repair Permissions have any impact on me getting duplicate, triplicate, or no email?
    Thanks...

    Don - thanks for the quick post and help. Everything went as advertised when I followed the steps except the final repair permissions. I read the thread a little further and saw that others had run into the problem once iTunes was back in the Applications folder. Any downside to just keeping iTunes on the Desktop instead of in the Applications folder so that repair permissions completes?

  • What disk and when do I repair permissions?

    Hi I'm wondering how and when to "repair permissions" - Do I select the icon in disk utility marked 111.8 GB Samsung HM120JC or the icon beneath it marked and named as my hard drive? Does it matter? And how often/when should I do this?
    Thanks much
    KB

    Hi, Kent. It doesn't really matter whether you select the hard drive mechanism (the top line that you've named in your post) or the volume that appears as the startup drive on your desktop — either way, the permissions on that volume will be repaired. If your hard drive is partitioned into two or more volumes, and you select the drive mechanism, permissions will be repaired on each volume that contains an OS X installation. (Permissions can only be repaired on a volume that contains OS X; a partition that doesn't have OS X installed on it can't have its permissions repaired.)
    You should always repair permissions after any software update, upgrade or installation that involves Apple's Installer application (Installer.app). Most knowledgeable folks here also recommend doing so before every such installation, upgrade or update, to prevent a damaged or corrupt permission from interfering with the Installer's business and thereby fouling up whatever's being installed.
    Repairing permissions is not a cure-all, and though some people consider it a routine maintenance practice, others emphatically don't. I think of it as a totally harmless, free, quick, easy procedure that sometimes solves minor problems, and I probably do it more often than is really productive: every two or three weeks, even if I haven't installed anything lately or had any problems. But I always do it before and after every Apple software installation, even ones that are installed through the Software Update utility — and that means I never allow SU to install more than one thing at a time, specifically so I can repair permissions between installations.

  • Optimize and repair permissions

    After upgrading software via the internet the final message is that the HD is being optimized, is this the same procedure that Norton performed in OS 9?
    I usually repair permissions just before backing up my HD with Carbon Copy Clones. I notice that when I start CCC it reads that it will repair permissions before backing up. Does this mean that I don't have to repair permissions before backing up that CCC will do it?
    Also when I repair permissions do I also have to repair permissions on the backup drive, or just on the main drive?

    Frank:
    In terms of your question about CCC the option to Repair Disk Permissions, when selected, actually uses Disk Utility, to the best of my knowledge. You could do it again, if that makes you feel more secure, or uncheck the checkbox in CCC Preferences and do it yourself, or just let CCC take care of it, which is what I do.
    Good luck.
