Will ripping dvds cut down on the life of the optical drive?

Apple Discussion users,
I have a MBP and I have been ripping a lot of my dvds with Mactheripper. If I continue to do so will my optical drive break? Thanks...
Finley

Nothing lasts forever! If your worried about wearing the internal drive out, you could consider investing in a external solution which will save you money in the long run, as they'll perform better due to a high reading speed.
If your considering this option, I would suggest you choose a FireWire version to a USB one mainly because you'll experience less problems and keep your USB ports free for other accessories.

  • Can no longer play cd's or DVD's or use the D: drive

I've tried several different CD's, DVD's and a Blackberry Desktop CD install. The drive starts to turn, then stops. Windows Media Player will not play the firs two and nothing happens with the third. I've tried to reinstall drivers to no avail. I've tried to install DVD player firmware and got a message that said that no drive was detected. What can I do?

Unplug the AC adapter, remove the battery, then press and hold the power button down for a minimum of 30 seconds.  Now replace the battery and see if the Optical Drive works now.
Also try booting to a self booting CD or DVD like the Recovery Disk, a Memtest disk, or a Linux Live CD to determine if the problem is in Windows or a physical hardware problem with the drive itself.  If it can boot to a Self Booting CD/DVD then it proves that it is a Windows problem.  If it won't, then it shows that the drive itself is bad and needs to be repaird.

  • Prolonging the life of your optical drive?

I recently had to have the Superdrive on my MacBook replaced, as it had only lasted a rather woeful 7 months since I bought the computer new.
The guy at the authorised service centre gave me a tip: he said that to prolong the life of any optical drive (PC / Mac / laptop / desktop), you should leave a CD in it at all times. He seemed to think that this would protect the laser.
Is this just an old wives' tale, or does anyone here think that it could be a good idea?
I went through two optical drives on my previous Mac (a G3 Powerbook), so as I'm sure you can understand, I'm getting kind of paranoid that my new Superdrive will go wrong again, so any other tips would be most welcome!

About the only benefit I could see in doing this is that you would keep the laser covered and perhaps prevent dust build up. Most notebooks don't have slot-loading drives so a Q-tip can easily clean them... and as the MacBook does have a slot-loading drive, I can't imagine any dusty getting in there. I've lost count of how many desktop/notebook optical drives I've had over the years. I don't recall ever having one fail and I've never kept them loaded with a disk. As mentioned, I would imagine the extra wear of the drive spinning up all the time would be more likely to cause a shorter life (plus the annoying delays associated with optical disks mounting, etc).

  • The optical drive on my Macbook white keeps ejecting DVD's?

So am trying to upgrade to snow leopard on my older intel based macbook white, but the disc just ejects, first I thought it was a problem with the disc, but I tried with another DVD and did the same thing. CD's seem to work fine.
Tried the disc utility repair and safe mode and all that but no joy. So I also have a newer aluminium macbook which works great, so I was wondering if it was at all possible to use the optical drive on my newer macbook to install the disc on my older macbook using the remote disc facility? I know its for the Air but is there a way to make it work for my non air macbook. I wanna see if this is possible before I go to the expense of getting an external DVD drive or even getting it fixed by apple which im sure is gunna costa an arm and a leg!
Or is there something else I can try to get my dvd section of the optical drive working again?
    Many thanks
    Hannah

If I were you, I'd uninstall Power Manager entirely. I don't particularly like any of Lenovo's software. Each and every one has caused me problems so I've gotten rid of them all.

  • HT1305 how can i turn down the fan rpm that's between the optical drive and hdd in my power mac g5 dual 2.3?

how can i turn down the fan rpm that's between the optical drive and hdd in my power mac g5 dual 2.3?

Ok, I saw that error in your logic. A Dual G5 2.3 or even a Dual Core 2.3 does NOT use LCS at all. Its air cooled and if anything if the OP is experiencing this problems could be due to possible heatsink paste drying up. He might have to re-apply MX 7 or Arctic Silver.
The only G5's that use LCS are: G5 dual 2.5 from Late 2004, the G5 Dual 2.7 from Early 2005, and lastly the G5 Quad-Core from Late 2005-end of September 2006.
    Hope this helps.

  • IMac internal optical drive reads and plays cd's but DVD's spin for a few moments then eject. Then any drive utility access results in the spinning wheel of doom. Then the optical drive doesn't show up anywhere until a restart. OSX 10.6.8 - Intel Core 2

iMac internal drive locks up after trying to play a DVD. CD's work properly. All preference settings are correct. I have tried several different DVD's that work in other drives. Drive is : HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA11N. After spinning wheel of doom goes away, so does the optical drive in Disk Utility and System Profiler and no disks work because the drive isn't there until a restsrt. Any ideas? Thanks.

The battery alone is a $5 to $15 part.  Hard drives vary in cost, and depending on the iMac, they may or may not be able to install a third party hard drive, or one resold through Apple.    The resold through Apple drives tend to cost more.  This article discusses the varying successes of third party drives on iMacs:

The labor costs depend on the store as well as the time to get the parts in stock.    Call around.

How much of a hurry are you in, and are you considering upgrading to Lion?
File Vault on Snow Leopard only encrypts home folders you select, and doesn't work well with Time Machine.
But Lion will have "full disk encryption" of local or external disks.  See File Vault 2 here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/features.html

  • When i insert the DVD into the optical drive, the mac book hanged....

when i insert the DVD into the optical drive or press the eject button , the mac book hanged....
i need to turn off the mac book by pressing the turn off button directly.

Well there is Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck witch includes step by step instructions to run disk repair without the install disk.
But before doing that, it's a good idea to backup. You may want to troubleshooting your superdrive / disk before hand. if I disk repair fails you may need the disk working to re-install the OS.
Dose the computer read any DVDs? if no, you may want to use Troubleshooting the slot load optical disc drive.

  • The optical drive on my laptop will not go back in.

I accidentally pulled my optical drive out too far and now it will not go back in all of the way.
I think one of the silver runners is broken, because one slides all the way but the other doesn't.
I think the connection may be lost as the light on the drive no longer lights up.
Any advice? Is it easy to take the back of the laptop off and see if the connection is loose?
    Thank you.

My HP G71 Model#G71-329WM will not load a CD or DVD so I need to replace the optical drive. What is the correct Part number? Thanks

    Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01713747.pdf
Replacement optical drives with HP part numbers can be found in Chapter 3, page 33.
You can also read the instructions in chapter 4 on removing the drive and getting the part number off of it which will be normally found on a white sticker.  A 6 digit-3 digit part number (123456-001)
You can search by the part number on eBay for a used but working device or you can probably buy one new from HP by entering the part number at the link below.

  • IMac's optical drive fan is loud after replacing the optical drive with an SSD?

Today I removed the optical drive from my late 2009 iMac and installed an SSD in its place. Everything works perfectly, except for one thing...my optical drive fan goes crazy when I turn the iMac on. It goes to full blast and it sounds like my computer will blast off into space at any time. I'm aware that this is a common issue when replacing/upgrading hard drives, and so I did some research and found an app called SSD Fan Control that fixed the problem for the most part.
In a nutshell, the fan runs at normal speed and is quiet when I'm logged in and actually using the computer, thanks to SSD Fan Control. However, when I turn the iMac on and it's at the white boot-up screen with the Apple logo, the fan goes up to full blast. Once the computer logs in, the fan quiets down because SSD Fan Control is set to launch at login.
I was wondering if there's a way to make it so that the fan is quiet at the boot screen too...it's quite annoying turning my iMac on and hearing that obnoxiously loud whirring sound as it's booting up. Is it possible, or can it just be controlled while I'm actually logged in?

An iPad is a great device, but it's no computer replacement. It lacks the file sharing/structure that comptuers have and the ability to easily get files onto/off it without the internet.
That said, if you still have your desktop and use it for most of the computing work and basically just want a photo viewer, check your e-mail device, then it may work for you.
The networked harddrive will be the hard part. Since the iPad lacks a file manager anything you use on it must have an app so that you can access it. And that app also must be allowed to 'send' your files to another app. So that may be what you really need to research. The ability and ease of using a network drive to do the file sharing you want.

  • Help please.  Can't boot my iMac from the optical drive.

17" flat panel, 1GHz iMac, running OS 10.2.8.
I've been trying to do some disk maintenance and would like to be able to repair my boot disk. I've tried to boot from the optical drive, using Norton SystemWorks CD-ROM and also my iMac software install and repair DVD, holding down the C key while attempting to boot. After trying for a few seconds, a gray veil drops down and a text box telling me that I have to shut down by holding the power key for many seconds shows up. (Is this a Kernel panic?)
I've also run Repair Permissions. That program seems to stall right at the end, as the status bar is 99% full, and never completes its run.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi MacGeezer,
    DO NOT USE NORTON SYSTEMWORKS
Norton Utilities and Disk Doctor were discontinued almost 2 years ago (for some very good reasons!). It caused much more trouble than it solved.

  • Can the optical drive in the new 13 MBP be removed permanently?

Any idea how much weight that would save?

    JoeyR wrote:
The optical drive would save maybe a few ounces (about the weight of a deck of cards). There is very little hardware in the drive components. Should you find yourself in the position of needing support for your machine, you will not be able to run any of the diagnostic tests which require booting from the optical drive. You would also not be able to reinstall the OS should there be a need to do so.
There are reports that Apple Hardware Test has been able to run without install discs in most of the new Macs.
I've certainly been able to do that, but I'm not sure exactly what the magic combination is to do that. I've been holding down D (I think) and it's been working sometimes, but I'm not sure if it has to be held when shutting down or when restarting. I've tried it at various points, and often it just boots into regular OSX.

  • Is this normal for the Optical Drive?

I don't know if this has already been asked but....
I am kinda worried about the optical drive on my mini.
Has anyone else noticed that the optical drive on the minis is kinda loud, especially right after you have put in a disk? All disks that i put in the drive make a sound like they are hitting against something, but stop after a couple of seconds.
Also, is it normal for a kind of "fluttering" sound to come from the drive when you are playing a DVD (it happens about every 5-10 seconds but doesn't effect the playing at all)?
And finally, are all minis designed so you have to push a disk at least 5/6 of the way before the drive ***** it in?

    Yes to all questions.
Optical drives these days make a lot of noise. You don't hear it in something as large as a tower computer because the computer has its entire case to pick up the vibrations. With the drive just under the case cover and nothing to make distribute very far, it will make more noise on a notebook or Mac Mini just because of the constrained space.
That said, if put sticky labels on disks, or get extra thick disks that is not very good for slot loading drives. See this article on nonstandard media:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58641
If you want more flexibility with media, external Firewire and USB optical drives exist. http://www.macsales.com/ has a nice selection that offer full compatibility.
