Will SATA2 drive work in a MacPro?

I need to add a 2nd hard drive to my Mac Pro. But I am having a tough time finding one that is obviously compatible. On the MacPro tech specs (http://www.apple.com/macpro/specs.html), the drives are listed as "Serial ATA 3Gb/s".
My local store only has SATA2 drives. For example, on the Western Digital site, the WD Caviar SE 16 750 GB drive looks perfect (http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=311), but when I search that part number (WD7500AAKS) at the local store, it comes up as SATA2.
My questions, then are:
• Should I care about using a SATA2 drive in the MacPro. Will SATA2 work?
• Is my local company wrong and this drive is really a normal SATA?
• Does anyone have any first-hand info of a good 750 GB (500 if I have to) hard drives for the MacPro. I've always been happy with my WD Caviars for previous computers.
My current set-up has only the OEM 500GB hd. I don't need RAID, nor am I doing any disk-intensive video work. My MacPro is a part-time graphic design machine / home computer.

SATA II (or 2) is what you want. SATA I drives will also work but they have lower performance specs.
A really good 750 GB SATA II drive for the MacPro is the Western Digital Caviar 750GB SE16 (WD7500AAKS). A review of the drive's performance in the MacPro can be found here (http://www.barefeats.com/hard91.html). I use one for my boot drive and it is very fast, quiet and it runs cool. A good place to buy the drive is Other World Computing (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD7500AAKS/) for around $220. OWC makes buying the right hard drives, memory, optical drives and other peripherals fairly fool-proof as you select your computer model and then see only the components that will work in that computer.

I have a 80GB Western WD00BB-OOJKCO drive as my backup. If I upgrade to the new iMac will I be able to use this drive as a firewire and upload all my applications back onto my new iMac? I presently do my backup with Carbon Copy Cloner as a bootable backup.
I know I would have to purchase a firewire case for the drive, but will this drive work in a firewire case?

Don't see why not assuming you have all the files required by your applications fully backed up. Some applications install data outside of the Applications folder. Some record serial numbers into invisible files. If all the data are not properly transferred then you may need to reinstall some applications.
If you are moving from a PPC to an Intel Mac, then I suggest reading the following;
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC
System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies
Browser and other plug-ins
Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries

In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.

Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode or copying the critical contents to CD and DVD or an external hard drive will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.
Basically the instructions you should follow are:
1. Backup your data first. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
2. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
3. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
4. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
4. Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (* This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ copy any preferences needed for third-party applications
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)

A slight problem with the Mac Pro is that these are 2.5 inch form factor drives, and they do not attach happily to the stock drive Bay sleds. There are a number of alternatives, including:
install "loose" in the second Optical bay, if available
remove the metal enclose and just install the "bare" circuit card.
buy a 2.5/3.5 Mac Pro sled for your model Mac Pro
N.B. there are TWO models of sleds, so two models of replacement sleds -- be sure to get the correct one for your Mac Pro
Buy an ICE Box or similar mechanical enclosure that adapts the 2.5 drive to 3.5 mounting for a Mac Pro
and one more...
... OWC sells some drives in 3.5 form factor, but you have to know to look for them.

Short answer is "yes." You have the long answer, which is, it's not as fast, won't take advantage of the new SATA controllers, etc.
But if you are looking to cram a 2T drive in your system, it will work and it will format to 1.89T or so, giving the room you need. I have a Mac Pro 4,1 (Dual Quad-Core Nehalem) box with three 1T drives and one 1.5T drive and they all work great. I'm using the larger drive as a Time Machine drive. In that I'm looking for security and capacity, speed isn't that big a deal.
And if you're looking for raw speed, you need to go to external arrays on your Mac Pro. If you're editing HD video, you must be on an array and you should be on a system that will feed you as many streams as your CPU can handle.

Replacing a hard disk: will any drive work?

The 60GB internal hard disk on my 12" PowerBook G4 no longer works reliably. I know this because I can install OS X on my external Maxtor hard drive and boot up with no problem through firewire, but not with the internal one.
I want to replace the internal hard disk. Will any drive that seems to have the right specs-2.5", 9.5mm IDE Hitachi 80GB-do the job? I just bought the described drive at a computer shop, and haven't opened it yet, but I want to make sure I can actually make use of it. Are there any other important considerations?

Good to see you have managed to get the correct drive.
I have seen posts on these boards where the SATA version has been purchased by mistake as online resellers don't always make enough distinction between the serial and parallel/ultra versions in their sales descriptions.
Even when I was buying my drive I had to triple check that I was buying the correct one.

Will 7200rpm drive work in 17"PB?

With hard drive specs rising and prices still dropping I'm thinking of squeezing another few months out of my PB17 (1.67) by upgrading the hd with the Seagate Momentus 7200rpm 320gig SATA drive. Will it work in this 4-year old PB, and will it make things happen faster? I'm using mostly CS3 and Office 2008, and have recently experienced real slowdowns in speed, esp launching Office apps.

Western Digital now has a 320 GB PATA drive. You will find a sample of available sources here. Rotational speed is only part of the efficiency of a drive. The other is areal density which means that more data is accessed on a single rotation the greater the areal density. Of course, with two drives of equal capacity the one with the higher rotational speed will be faster, although I have read that it doe snot make a lot of difference.

MBP 1.83 CoreDuo - will SATA300 drives work in my SATA-150 laptop?

I've had this book for 4 years and its time to bump up the drive space from the stock Fuji 80GB. System Profiler indicates an SATA interface, which gives me a maximum 1.5Gb transfer rate. I did a search for compatible drives and the list is pretty slim. But I read a few review sites where people had put SATA300 drives in old MacBook Pros like mine and they still worked. What is the truth about this?
I want to go to a 7200rpm drive with at least 200GB of storage, and keep it under $80 if I can. I'm looking at the Hitachi Travelstar 7k320 among others, which is available at Best Buy for under $70, but until I know more about this interface issue I can't make a decision.
Any help you guys can give me would be appreciated, including recommendations for good drives.

I had trouble with the first and only Seagate I bought. The 250GB Fuji I currently have in my MBP has spectacularly unspectacular performance, but is dependable. Just last week I had a WD die on me. Will new hard drive work?

One of my drives is starting to act up and I need to replace it. My Dual G4 manual says I can use 2 Ultra ATA 100 drives and 2 Ultra ATA 66 drives. It's apparent that drives have moved beyond these specs, I'm considering a Maxtor Diamond Max 10 300GB ATA-133 drive thats only $90 at Tigerdirect. Will this drive work, and will it suffer a performance hit being in only an ATA100 slot or ATA66 slot.

the vast majority if not all ATA-133 drives are backwards compatible with ATA-100 and ATA-66 so it should work fine. There may be a small performance hit but not as much as the figures would suggest. 133MBps is the maximum theoretical transfer rate but most drives don't achieve anywhere near that in burst yet alone substained data transfer.
Depending on how you intend to use the new drive it may be quicker in practice on the ATA-66 bus (assuming you only have two drives) rather than sharing the ATA-100 bus with another drive.

Yes. And it shouldn't even need to use jumpers. If you aren't doing RAID you might want to look around and get the 500GB Caviar SE16 which is a nice desktop drive - and you should/will notice a difference in performance. 500GB drives just have a nice feel, and any of WD drives are quiet.
I have 320GB RE models ($114) and I've seen SE16 500GB for $140 and less.

Slot loading machines can only handle 4.72" (120mm) standard CD disks. Any other size will simply get stuck in the drive and be really hard to get out. Your best bet is to find someone with a tray loading CD drive and have them copy the driver over to a USB thumb drive or a standard size CD.

works as a bootable drive. You can boot from a USB
hard drive if you have an Intel Mac. I have done
it.
