Will server push out profile changes without a FQDN?

Setting up Server on OS X 10.9. I do not have a FQDN on my network (using networkname.lan). Will server still be able to push out profile manager changes to iOS devices if they are outside of the network? Inside the network? I'm not sure how Apple push works.
I need to enforce policies on iOS devices.

Your server needs rock-solid DNS, with a proper FQDN available all over the internet, and the server must be accessible from outside your private intranet.  Without it, your client devices will not reliably be able to check with the server for updates.
You don't need it for client devices but you do need it for the server.  Get that sorted out and things will work better.

  • IP Profile change without resynch?

    Hi,
After a solid month of 74Mbps I noticed that my download speed dropped to 54Mbps on Saturday.
When I 1st checked my profile it still said 74Mbps but I could see that it was capped when I tested a few downloads (and from my sam knows whitebox results.)
When I checked my HH3 it said that it was connected for over 3 weeks.
After rebooting the test then showed an updated profile of 56Mbps.
So you do not need a resynch for your profile to change ?
I am assuming it was a bit of noise on the line probably weather related.
Will the synch increase on its own (without a reboot) ?
    Thanks
    Simon

The kit in the cabinet can sync "on the fly" so it doesn't actually drop sync long enough for the PPP to drop.
As it's the PPP session (hub logging you in) data that picks up the line speed from the cabinet on the way to the RAS (to get the IP address) it's possible for your sync to drop (or increase) but the profile not be changed (as a new session hasn't been started, so therefore the current sync speed wouldn't have been picked up and given to the BRAS)
    I think that makes sense!!

I have tried hitting the power button short and long, pushing every button, but it seems the only way out is pulling the power plug.
    Thanks for any help.

    HI
This is a known issue and HP is working on Firmware to fix this issue. This will be released soon.
So please use the workaround for the time being if the printer goes to power saving mode.

  • Lens Profile changes in ACR 6.2 update

Before the update, I had perfectly aligned masks for hundreds of images using the Nikon 18-200mm lens.  However, when I now open their Smart Objects, make and change and close, a new distortion correction is being applied, ie. the masks are not longer aligned.  This is a major headache and it's not clear how I might go back to the original lens profile.  Even if it is worse, I am already invested in it with the masks.  Pushing out this change without due notice or way to ensure backward compatibility is a major shortfall.  I would be interested to hear how Adobe recommends I proceed?  Revert to ACR 6.1 and miss out on all future updates?  I highly recommend building legacy profiles into future updates.

What ACR adjustments do you need to do to the image that can only be done in RAW format and cannot be done when ACR is editing a TIF after your initial ACR-conversion?  It seems as though you may need to modify your workflow to convert to TIF, and then re-edit that TIF with ACR and use that as the smart object on which to apply your masks.  TIFs only have relative WB adjustments, not absolute like RAW files, but if the WB is close you probably don't have to tweak things too much, although you'd want to be careful to create your initial set of TIFs with the same initial WB so you could tweak groups of images similarly with the same relative adjustments.
For Adobe to accommodate what you're wanting they'd need to have the ACR version number where a profile came from as part of its name so ACR can match the specific profile used with old images.  I think Adobe messed up when they didn't do this, initially, but perhaps they feel it is still a beta period and don't want too many versions of each profile cluttering things until things have settled down.
You asked, earlier, how to get the old profiles back.
On my Windows Vista/Win7 computers the Adobe-supplied lens profiles for Nikon are duplicated in two different places:
    C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0\Nikon
    C:\Users\All Users\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0\Nikon
I think additional users-supplied profiles would go to the following place, although I'm not sure because I don't have any user-created lens profiles:
    C:\Users\-your-user-name-\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0\Nikon
The way to get your old profiles back would be:
Find the current Adobe-supplied profiles on your computer and remove them.
Download and install the ACR 6.1 update.
Find the profiles installed with that in the same places you removed the other ones from and save all these 6.1 profiles somewhere else.
Download and install the ACR 6.2 update.
It may be sufficient to copy the old 6.1 version of the profiles for the lenses you use into your user-profile-specific location and those would override whatever Adobe-supplied profiles there are, but I doubt it.
And if not, then what you'd want to do is edit the XML in the LCP files for ACR 6.1 for your lenses that you have already put into your user-profile-specific location and change the name to have the ACR version in it, so when you run LR or ACR, you know which ones are your old profiles and which are the current ones that Adobe has supplied.
The remaining task is to re-assign this relabeled ACR-6.1-specific profile to your underlying images that have smart-objects in them to be able to use your masks with the old correction in place.
Going forward it might be wise to also copy and relabel each profile for your lenses that have been updated...you may have to test things yourself to see if there are any differences.

  • Software update scan cycle not pushed out to new clients

I have a very odd problem that I'm not fully understanding why it is happening.  I have my SCCM server pushing out updates to my clients and it works just fine.  The issue happens when I push out SCCM to a new client.  Heres what happens as
far as updates go when I push SCCM out to a new client:
    -Push out SCCM to client
-Client suddenly starts looking to Microsoft for Windows Updates
The only way I can get it to change its policy to look to my WSUS/SCCM server is to manually run the "Software updates scan cycle" job on the client.  As soon as I do that then the clients Updates show it is manged by the systems admin, which
    is what I want.
My question is why is this policy not pushed out by default as soon as I push out a new client?  I shouldn't have to wait 7 days for the client to look back at the software policy before it updates because by then its already downloaded 100 new updates
from Microsoft, which I don't want.  Does anyone else know how to fix this?  Hopefully it all makes sense.

Yeah I tried to build my own custom client settings package and push it out with the client, but it still didn't change anything.  I can get on the client before I push out the SCCM client to it and look at gpedit.msc and go to Comp Config > Admin
Temp > Windows Components > Windows Update > and it shows all fields are set to "Not Configured."  Once I push the SCCM client to the client I can go back to that same location and check and all the fields are still set to "Not
configured."  But when I manually go into that clients control panel and select Configuration manager > Actions tab > Software updates scan cycle > Run now, I can then go back into the gpedit and under windows Update the Specify intranet
Microsoft update service location will then have the FQDN of my SCCM/WSUS server in there so it works then, but for some reason its not doing that part automatically.

I just got off the phone with Verizon and I was told a second Froyo update will be pushed out today.  Supposedly this update will correct the battery and incoming calls not ringing issues among others.  WIll have to wait and see.

It is being reported on another forum that the upgrade is ED03. Current is ED01.  I haven't seen anything official yet from VZW.

  • Push out Adober Reader changes to Macs

I have a network with both Windows and Mac clients that use Adobe Reader.  I already know how to use Active Directory Group Policy to push the necessary registry changes so that my Windows based clients can have their Adobe Reader settings updated.
However, for my Mac users where the settings exist in .plist files, I have been searching for a way to centrally update these same settings (I'm interested in pushing out security related settings when Adobe releases security advisories saying that the mitigation is to ensure that certain settings are in place until a full blown patch is released).
Does anyone know how to push out .plist settings changes from a central point similar to what AD Group Policy allows with registry changes?
    Thanks,
    Brandon

I ran into this issue some time ago as well and wrote just such a script!
Here's an exerpt from my documentation:
Lastly we need to add the Printer via the command line. Here's how:
First thing we need to do is copy the PPD file to the correct location. By default it's in /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/
The PPD in question can be found specifically by typing lpinfo -m This lists all of the printer drivers available to cups.
You must copy the gz file using sudo. It needs to be copied to /usr/share/cups/model/
The copy command looks like this:
    sudo cp /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/HP\ LaserJet\ P3010\ Series.gz /usr/share/cups/model/
Once there, you run the script to install it.
I've left the scripts in the Public/Techy Stuff for each printer we use in the highschool.
So, the command looks like this. It's a bit of a trick cause figuring out the details as to how it's supposed to work just by looking in the man pages usually *****.
I'll explain...  The command is as follows:
    lpadmin -p LabLaser -E -v socket://192.168.1.11 -m HP\ LaserJet\ 1320\ Series.gz -o printer-is-shared=false
lpadmin -p LabLaser adds the printer and calls it "LabLaser"
-E forces encryption while connecting to the server. It's probably not necessary but it's in all the examples on the web that I could find.
-v gives you the opportunity to specify the location of the printer. In ***** case they're all network printers with valid IP addresses and MDNS addresses, so yeah. socket:// for standard IP printing protocol (IPP) mdns:// for bonjour.
Get the mdns name from lpinfo -m
...the -m specifies the name of the PPD. See above. (this is the driver that I copied to /usr/share/cups/model/)
-o is pretty self explanitory...  However I feels it's extremely important.  This will prevent the printer from showing up in the bonjour list of printers on the network even if the user has printer sharing turned on.
    Hope this helps!

  • Failing to push out apps via profile manager

    Hi,
Been helping out at a school where they have bought 90 iPads for their kids to use - after weeks of frustrations they were all finally enrolled on the mac server (runs OS X Yosemite). Thought I had finally managed to help them finish it off but now when they try too push out apps from profile manager they're having an issue.
The devices are grouped in groups of 30 and when I tried too push out an app to them (Scratch Jr, if that makes any difference at all) it would only push out to 14 of the iPads in the group - with varying degrees of success. The room there kept in doesn't have a great signal from their wi-fi so I thought it might have something to do with that but when I tried to push out another app (PhotoMath) it got pushed out to all the iPads in the group, again with varying degrees of success.
Essentially I have 2 problems - Why would the server only push out to some iPads for some apps but then suddenly find them all when pushing out an another? And why would some iPads not even pick up the app? Even when, in the active tasks, it says app deployment has been successful? The school have had these iPads since September and have only been able to use them sparingly - so to say they're dead keen would be an understatement.
I hope I'm making sense - please help! I've checked the logs from the server but I'd be lying if I said I could understand that stuff...
    Thank you.

I'm not familiar with LANDesk, but ARD will allow you to push files to remote Macs as specify their locations.
So if everybody need a particluar font on their computer, you could push it to /Library/Fonts on all of your Macs. You can also remotely install packages. This is useful if your deploying a something like Adobe CS5 to a bunch of workstations.

  • Unable to push user profiles to AD groups with Profile Manager since upgrade to Server v3

Since upgrading our OS X Mac server from 10.8.5 to 10.9.1, and OS X Server app to v3 (now 3.0.2) I have been unable to push or modify user profiles to AD groups (or AD users) using Profile Manager. This was working fine on OS X 10.8.5. Pushing device profiles is still working OK after the upgrade.
From what I can see from the logs on the client side and server side, it seems related to a problem with the mdm authtoken.
In the client console I can see this entry:
    27/01/14 14:30:15.844 mdmclient[38557]: *** ERROR *** [Agent:636102071] Unable to proceed with connection to: https://ourserver.ourdomain/devicemanagement/api/device/mdm_connect (com.apple.mdmconfig.mdm) because don't have valid MDM AuthToken
On the server, in the php.log I can see the corresponding attempt to authenticate:

So I can see there is a failure to authenticate, but don't really know how to troubleshoot this further. Or maybe this is just a bug in the new server app?
I have tried to remove and re-enroll clients in Profile Manager but no joy there.
In the client's Keychain I can see an MDM user AuthToken linked to the correct user account.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions

I just wanted to update my post, as this issue for me is resolved.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the Server.app on our Mac server, since then I've been able to push profiles to AD Users and Groups. I guess that in my case the Server app got into a bit of a mess when it was upgraded to v3.
Now the next headache I have is that my AD Groups which are displayed in Profile Manager are not syncing any recent changes. I think I'm probably seeing the same issue as described in this post

All devices signed into the same iCloud account will finish up with the same contacts. Of course if prior to joining iCloud two family members each had an entry for Uncle Fred, then you will finish up with two contact cards for Uncle Fred, and so on. If you tidy this up on your computer then the changes will propagate to everyone else.

  • Pushing out Apps to iPad without Apple ID credentials!

When are Apple going to allow educational institutes and business push out apps without requiring the apple ID and Password. Im not the only one to mention this! Very common issue!
Whenever we push out an app using our MDM tool, it asks for the Apple ID password! Our only option is to give the password to the teacher or student, but then we risk them logging into the online account and locking us out! (changing the password and security details etc...)
Somthing NEEDS! to be done here, Ive been frantically Googling for days trying to find a work around that DOSENT involve the Apple Configurator (with **** USB cables!) and i KNOW im not the only person in this situation....
Or at least have a layered password facility so that if we do give out a password to the teacher or student, the password they have cant do anything but install apps... that might work...
Apple really need to look at this!

I'd give apple a call. I  think that I read that you do not need to enter the password with iOS 7 for app updates.
    Until something better comes along.

  • Change Server URL in Profile Manager Enrollment Process?

It appears devices learn the IP or URL of their MDM server during the Profile Manager enrollment process. It must be part of the configuration profile sent to the device. It also appears this is based on the machine's host name. Is there anyway to change that URL - as when the host name of the server changes? If so, where are the files located on the server.
I believe in the previous iPhone Configuration Utility there was a "server URL" and "Check in URL" that could be set. We can't seem to find any parameters in Profile Manger to control the same. Thanks for any help.

    Hi Jonathan,
I stumbled on your responses because I was looking for an answer to my own issues.
I am like most just a lay user, although wth 20 years Mac experience.
    The issue is as folllows:
I set up Lion Server and I host a Wiki page and I try to run Profile Manager.
I do not have a registered host name. The hostname is server.name.private.
In order to reach the server from the Internet my clients use a DynDNS hostname such as "name.dyndns.org".
My clients can access the Wiki pages with no problems and Safari shows https://name.dyndns.org in the address line.
However, if they want to connect to Profile manager, the server re-directs https://name.dyndns.org/profilemanager https://server.name.private/auth?redirect=https://server.name.private/devicemana gement/api/authentication/callback
which the client's browser cannot resolve because the internal hostname is unknown to public DNS servers.
Why does Profile Manager redirect in the first place ?
Can this issue be resolved without obtaining an "officially registered" hostname ?
    Thank you for helping.
    Regards,
    Twistan
