Will Setup Assistant allow me to choose a new user name or must I keep the user name on the source computer?

The source computer is an early 2008 Macbook Pro running Mavericks. The new computer (it's in transit) is a 15" Macbook Pro w/ Retina Display, also running Mavericks. I want to copy all files, settings, apps etc from the old computer but I do not want the same computer name or the same user account name (short name) on the new computer. Can Setup assistant do this?

i downloaded lion but lost the setup assistant.  please help me recover the setup assistant.  i do not know where/how to find/enter information in the terminal as was suggested.

Launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search.   Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. Confirm.
Reboot. The Setup Assistant will launch.

  • Can I access system preferences, WHILE migration assistant is running on the source computer, to change the sleep setting?

I have started Migration Assistant and have NOW learned that I was supposed to change the sleep setting in System Preferences to 'never'. Since M.A. is running right now, can I change the setting or will it mess up the transferring of data??

Thank you for responding.  We did continually move the cursor for a few hours, but still had 13 hours to go, so after feeling we had nothing to loose, we did go into System Preferences to turn off sleep mode and we were able to do so on the source computer.  Now in the morning we see that MA kept running for 8  additional hours.

  • Migration Assistant on the Source computer can't find the target on my WiFi network

I am trying copy stuff from an old MacBook Air to a new one.
Both computers are running OSX 10.9.4 and Migration Assistant v5 (08/24/2013)
    I can ping both computers.
But, when after step 4 of "OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks"  the source computer never finds the target. It just sits there "looking for other computers".
For what it's worth the if I hit continue on target computer it does see the source.
    Help

Back up the old system with Time Machine or Disk Utility and try migrating from the backup.

  • My new mac has two drives. Will setup assistant transfer files correctly?

My new iMac has a hard disc drive and a solid state drive. Does setup assistant transfer files from the old Mac to the new one by placing the files on one drive or on both? With setup assistant can I designate the SSD as the destination for transferring applications and the HDD as the destination for documents, music, photos, movies, etc.?
After completing the transfer with setup assistant will I have to move applications from the new iMac's HDD to its SSD?
Will the setup assistant have any effect on Lion in the new iMac?

That's helpful. Is there any impact to quality? It's not practical for me to USB or Ethernet it, since I don't have adapters and storage, etc. It is, however, convenient for me to let the laptop sit for a day (the estimated time) and just take in data at it's own pace on Bluetooth.
Is there going to be any loss of quality using this? Choppy songs, etc.

  • If two people use one computer, but we have separte itunes accounts, Apple ID, and icloud will my apps I get be stored in their account too since we are using the same computer?

If two people share the same computer, but have separate itunes account, Apple ID, and icloud and one of them downloads an app will it also go into the other persons account since y'all use the same computer

If you  have separate user accounts on the computer, then your downloaded apps are stored in your iTunes Library. See the following for dealing with having multiple users on the same computer: How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer.
Using More than One iDevice on the Same Computer
This applies mainly to couples who are adding another device and do not want their email, messages, etc. being duplicated on both devices. To begin read: How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer. You need to establish a separate Apple ID and password for whomever will use the new iDevice. See Apple - My Apple ID and Frequently asked questions about Apple ID. The easiest way is to do this on the computer using iTunes: iTunes- How to set up an Apple ID within iTunes.
On the computer create a new user account for the person with the new iDevice. This will be the user account that person will always use. He/She will no longer use the other user account. This way that person will have a separate iTunes Library
Start by transferring the new device(s) to a new account along with all your data.  Save any photo stream photos that you want to keep to your camera roll (unless they are already in the camera roll) by opening your Photos app, tap on Albums icon at the bottom. Now, tap on My Photo Stream album; tap Select; tap on the photos you want to select;, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow) in the lower left corner; then tap Save to Camera Roll.
If you are syncing notes with iCloud that you want to keep then you need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself. Later you can copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account.
Tap on Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (only deletes it from this device, not from iCloud; the person keeping the current account will not be affected,) provide the password to turn off Find My Phone and choose Keep on My iDevice when prompted.  Sign in with a different Apple ID to create your new account. Choose Merge to upload your data.
Once you are on separate accounts, you can each go to icloud.com and delete the other person's data from your account.

have made substantial changes to improve readability and syntax.

  • HT4889 Will migration assistant restore previous settings to a new mac?

I had a hard drive crash which required replacement.  The tech shop reinstalled OS 10.6.8 for me and I want to use my Time Machine backup to restore all of my files, settings, bookmarks, etc.  I have used Migration Assistant and done a restore but nothing has changed, although I know files were transerred from the backup.  What am I doing wrong?

Migration Assistant will restore the user accounts that existed previously. Did it create a new account for the one on the old drive?
Are you trying to restore it back to 10.8?

  • Ruler Doesn't allow me to choose a "place" that's not a point on the ruler.

    Hi,
I'm having an issue, I'm new to illustrator. I'm busy with an Image, now i could use trace, but learning how to use the illustrator tools etc.
The Question is, i have placed a Guide Line on the art-board ruler, its not on a point on the ruler (5cm, 6cm, 7cm), its mealy placed between the points, in other words, a point will be 5cm, 6cm, 7cm; I've placed the guide line on about 5,3cm. Now i cant seem to a-line the square image to the guide line placement, it goes directly to 5cm or 6cm but it doesnt want to be placed between that point, eg 5.1cm to 5.9cm
I would also like to mention, when i use the transform window, it skips 5.1cm to 5.9cm and only gives me ...5cm, 6cm or 7cm etc. It only a-lines to the points on the ruler and nothing in-between
    Help will be much appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    AppleBottom

Thanks for the quick reply and for the advice. But its not working, it still doesn't a-line it correctly.
Yay see i can upload an image, see below.
The black square a-lines to the "tini grey lines on the ruler" and that's it , cant a-line it to the Guide line
    Can the below be fixed?

  • I have one iMac with 2 users. Will Home sharing allow me to share music between users? (running Mac OS 10.8.2

I just seemed to get turned around when trying to share music on the same iMac.
How do I share music between two different users with two different iTunes accounts on the same iMac. My wife and I simply want to be able to share music that she purchases with me and visa versa. We each have our own iPads and I am unsure of the proper way to do this so I don't messup the syncing of our iPads.
Part of the reason I ask is that I see questions concerning two different computers. Does it make any difference that I am trying to share music between two users on the same iMac
Thank you in advance for information helping me to understand the Home Sharing process.

Hi, one question & one suggestion...
What possible things are connected at home but not at the store, inlude every cable, etc.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons

  • Will my data be saved after formating the source computer?

If i got a new computer, after I Sync Firefox, can i delete the source (format the old computer) and still have the data on the new one?

Yes. Just make absolutely sure that your new computer has everything you want on it before formatting your old one. I'd recommend checking your Firefox bookmarks and saved passwords thoroughly just to be sure everything was synced over.
Note that Sync doesn't sync everything. For example. it doesn't yet sync up what addons you have installed, though this is planned for some future version.

  • New user/account in Mail - how do I get Set-up assistant off?

    Hi,
I am helping a friend set up their new Mac Pro. They have never owned a computer - and they are using Leopard.
The outgoing mail server, etc... isn't working. I want to just get him into Mail Preferences and set up the accounts there.
However the Set-up assistant keeps saying "Welcome to Mail" and he can't seem to get past this (according to him on the phone)...
    Suggestions?
    Thanks!

Please clarify: if he can't get past Welcome to Mail, how does he know the outgoing server will not work?
If there is one account set up, you can hold down the Option key when clicking on the + to add an account, and bypass the account setup assistant.
You could create a New User Account on your Mac, and as that New User setup one account, and then email him the com.apple.mail.plist file from that New User Home Directory/Library/Preferences -- archived to properly email I would expect would be needed. If he then replaced that file, if one exists, in his Home directory/same location, then at least one account should be ready to go when he next launches Mail.
    More info, please.

  • HT4889 Will migration assistant/setup assistant transfer applications like Photoshop, MS Office, etc.?

I'm going to be moving from one MacBook Pro to a newer one.  My current MBP has the MS Office suite installed, plus Photoshop and Lightroom.  Will setup assistant/migration assistant transfer those applications, or do I need to install them on the new machine myself?

It should, if there is nothing the matter with the hardware of the machine.   Backup your data as a clone just in case. It is always helpful to have more hard disk space in the destination than the origin.

  • Help!  I am trying to get at my iPod (2nd Gen) from a new computer.  I have iTunes loaded but the Setup Assistant doesn't come up to allow me to access my iPod Shuffle.  When first using iPod, the Setup Assistant comes up but not 2nd setup?? Thx.

Please help!  I am trying to get at my iPod (2nd_Generation) from a new computer.  I have iTunes loaded but the Setup Assistant doesn't come up to allow me to access my iPod Shuffle.  When using iPod in the 1st computer (which I no longer have), the iTunes Setup Assistant comes up but not on this 2nd setup on a new computer?  The manual doesn't clarify how to do this.  Thanks.
