Will sleep interrupt burning a DVD?

Theoretically, it shouldn't - but I am paranoid or ruining discs and always end up turning off my sceen saver and all sleep functions while burning a DVD as a precautionary measure.
Am I wasting my time, or is this a good thing to do to ensure that the burn process is not harmed by the computer going sleep in the middle of it?

I often burn DVDs or CDs. I have my screensaver switching on after 5 minutes, which will also happen during a burn session, but this has no effect to the burning itself. I also have sleep set after 15 minutes. But during a burn session my mac never got to sleep. I think this is because a active task is running, this will prevent your mac from going to sleep.

  • How Fast will a G5 Burn a DVD?

    Hi everyone,
I'm looking to upgrade to a G5, and I'm curious how long does a Dual G5 take to burn a fully loaded DVD (in both iDVD & DVD studio pro)? Not just the burning alone, but the time it takes to process DVD menu's, slideshows, ect. Thanks for all the help in advance!
    -Anna

How fast is the computer that's going to be doing the authoring/rendering? Your signature says only that you've got a PowerMac G4.
I think iDVD uses single-pass encoding only, which would be relatively fast, but on a PowerMac G4, I doubt that it'll be any faster than realtime. I don't use iDVD so admittedly, I'm not sure. I can test it on my PowerBook if I remember to do so to see how long it tends to take.
On another note, are you aware of what you're about to get yourself into with filming a wedding, taking photos, and doing a highlight montage & photo montage? It looks easy, but it's really not. I know from experience, as I'm involved in wedding videography with one of my friends.
Are you planning on using just one camera and moving around a lot? Or will you have multiple cameras so you can get different angles of the ceremony? I ask this, not only from an artistic view, but mainly because you'll have to capture this video in the time between the ceremony and the reception - and capturing the video takes the same amount of time as the video's runtime (1 hr. of footage = 1 hour capturing). And if you add additional cameras, your capture time obviously increases.
Then, you still have to edit the montage together, which, depending on how fancy you want to get, may take at least 1/2 hour or more just for a rough cut. Then comes the DVD authoring and burning.
The photo montage is the easy part. You might be able to get good results by sending an iPhoto slideshow (perhaps with the Ken Burns effect enabled) to iDVD. That at least won't take too long. You could always play that from the computer if necessary.
I know it's not the same thing as what your cousin is asking for, but it might be more enjoyable for the guests to see something like a photo montage of the bride and groom using older photos of them. Pictures of them as kids, teens, young adults, etc. I was shooting a wedding recently where a friend of the groom presented something like this at the reception and it went over very well.
I hope you're being compensated in some way for doing all this for your cousin. I think it's going to be a long day for you. Best of luck to you.
And I'll try and remember to check out the iDVD speeds like I said. We might be able to get a rough idea of how long it'll take once you let me know what speed of computer you'll be working with.

  • I am using DVD Studio Pro and every time I try to burn a sd dvd it is telling me my bit rate is to high.  I am using the factory settings for sd 16:9.  Why will it not burn my dvd?

    Button Four

    DVD SP will compress the video if you have not already. However, it is usually better for you to make use of Compressor and compress the video yourself. That being said, the usual reason for the bitrate being too high error is that the audio is causing it. In Compressor you need to also compress your audio to a AC3 file. Start with the Dolby 2.0 preset and make the following changes;
Change the Dialog Normalization to -31 dBFS, and under the Preprocessing tab, change to Compression Preset to None.

  • Will stacks show in pic's when burning a dvd?

Hi all, just wanted to know if the stacks in my pic's will show when burning a dvd. When I fix red-eye or auto smart fix it shows the stacks on my pic's. I don't want the stacks to show when burning the pic's on a dvd.
    Thanks, alot

    > When I fix red-eye or auto smart fix it shows the stacks on my pic's
My guess is that what you are referring to as "stacks" is the icon superimposed on the thumbnail to show that this photo is part of a Version Set. This icon is present over the thumbnail, but it is not in the photo itself. No, it will not show on the photo file that is burned to a DVD.
You did an auto red-eye and an auto smart-fix. These create Version Sets where they save the file of your fixed photo separate from the original photo file so that your original is preserved.
I think my description answers Colin's question of "what do you mean by stacks showing?" If not, tell us what you did mean.
Then please do answer the question of specifically how you plan to Burn the DVD.

  • Sleep after burn

How can I get my iMac to sleep after burning a DVD? I like to let it burn overnight since many of my DVD's are quite long. I tried changing the energy preferences for the computer to go to sleep after 1 minute of inactivity. So I thought that after the burn...it would go to sleep. When I checked on it, the display was asleep, but the computer was up and running after the DVD was completed. I then tried just to have iDVD open with the same setting in the energy panel...and it DID go to sleep. Any ideas?
    Marie

I just had a thought that might work. Go to the energy control panel, set it all to never so you don't accidentally sleep during the iDVD work. Instead click on the Schedule tab and click on the Shut Down button to enable and then simply set a shutdown time for the computer.
Disadvantage is you have to estimate the time your project will take and put the shutdown time after it, but if you tend to find your projects have predictable times (mine is about 3+ hours per hour DVD) you can set the shutdown after that with some padding to be safe.
If you try it, report back and let us know how it went.

Congratulations on the new Mini. Are you saying you tried burning and it does not play, or do you want to burn it only for the computer to be able to play it?

  • Encore CS5 will Only Burn One DVD At A Time

Hello All , I am having a problem that I didn't have with CS4 ,If I set CS5 to burn more than one DVD it shows a hardware error after the first one , If I set CS5 to burn one DVD it works every time I only burn at 8X .This is not a major problem because it doesn't take much longer to burn them one at a time
but it would be nice to know why .
    Regards
    Kevin

Thank's for your suggestion but I have always set CS4 to burn say 10 DVDs and just change the media when prompted (only 10 days ago) in CS5 this doesn't work only the first one will burn , I am sure there is nothing wrong with my hardware is works flawlessly with all other software.

  • HELP NEEDED!!! Windows DVD Maker -- Video's will not work/burn, at all.

I've registered just for this problem as I've tried just about everything imaginable.
What's happening is that when trying to make a DVD from a video file (photo slideshow plus music works fine) that Windows DVD Maker will get to around 74% encoding and then just stop and give me the error message (at this point the progress meter skips to 99%):
    "Cannot create the DVD
An error occured when burning the DVD"
I've tried this using an avi file, (I know it works as I have used DVDFLick and its works great,, the menus are no where near as nice as windows dvd maker), and the sample video file included windows (I beleive its a wmv file).
I have looked at the event viewer, heres my error (which seems pretty common doing a google search):

OK so here's what i tried:
    1. Small video files, the sample one in the public folder, other 700mb avi files.
    2. Unchecked all the codecs in the options menu, then checked one at a time, then checked both, *one is AC3Filter, the other is Avi Decompressor from memery, located in the system32 folder, so not sure why it registered there if it's a windows included codec???).
    3. http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/mpeg-2-encoder-is-missing/page/2
Have followed this guys instructions on re-registering the required dll files (which I have checked and they are there in the System32 folder). Though when doing this using the "Run" in the start menu for the command "regsvr32 msmpeg2adec.dll" I get the error:
"The module "msmpeg2adec.dll" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80070005."
Then I use the command prompt (opening as "Run as Administrator", even though I am an administrator user????) run all the same things, and everything succeeds fine, no errors (but like I said, if don't run as admin, get the same DllRegistryServer error, even though I am an administrator)
Restart the comp. and what do ya know, still doesn't work, same problem, same error.
    3. Pictures and music, which burn fine and work fine on a dvd player.
    4. Have checked the temporary file where the encoded files are dumped. ie:
    C:\Users\******\AppData\Local\Temp\AuthorScript*****.tmp
Have opened the video file in WMC (Media Centre), works fine, no audio but that's still seperated at this point, so no worries there). I noticed though that the AC3 file or audio is at 0kb, and the second it is created when DVD maker is doing it's thing, I get an error, hmm not sure what's goin on there???
    5. Have used Vista Media Center Decoder utility. Results were:
    Video: Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder
    Audio: Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio Decoder
There are no other options (haven't needed to install other codec, don't use Nero either).
I have Windows 7 Pro (64bit), so I have all the necessary codecs built in. (As mentioned, I do have Ac3filter, but that's disable/unchecked in DVD maker, maybe that's the problem???). I would rather not download and install additional codecs.
Oh and it gets to 74% encoding then skips to 99% and the error pops up. From experience making a "picture and music" DVD, 74% is about when it starts burning, or when it merges the video and audio to make the vob file/s. It actually skips quickly to 80% and starts burning (slideshow DVD).
Computer is custom built, it not a HP or anything like that, so I don't have those .ax file extensions in system32 (for those who have seen an answer here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistaapps/thread/5cb0a40d-223c-4aed-87c4-3c63f400ee81)
So any idea's/suggestions? I know this will help a lot of people as it seems a common problem. I'm pretty tech savvy, so will try to follow any suggestions carefully.
Ohh and finally, for all those who reply thank you, thank you, thank you, even it if doesn't work, any suggestions are appreciated. And for reading my post, thank you, I realise it's a mighty long post. I hope my linking to multiple sites is okay.

I am attempting to burn a DVD from a Divx avi file with an mp3 audio track. I tried twice burning a DVD using Windows DVD Maker and had same result both times. Great picture, correct aspect etc but no audio. I played the DVD on a DVD player and on my laptop
    - same result. I should add that I used the preview facility on the software and there was audio. But when I burned the DVD - no audio.
I searched through a few forums, including this one, and tried the recommended procedure of going via Windows Movie Maker. I opened the avi in Movie Maker and chose the DVD option, a message appeared saying that the video would open in Windows DVD Maker which
it did. I clicked on burn and yes, I got picture plus sound. However now the picture was stretched and distorted along the top half of the screen with a green band filling the lower half. I tried once more being careful not to make any silly errors and same
    thing.
Divx avi with an mp3 audio track is a very commonly used format so it is surprising that Microsoft haven't configured the software to accommodate this and a number of other common formats such Xvid avi, mp4, m4v etc. with mp3 audio OR ac2 audio.
Surmising that Windows DVD Maker would at least be able to deal with a Windows movie file (a wmv file) I converted the avi to a wmv using AVS Video Converter (a piece of software which I use regularly). NB When converting it's wise to use advance menu to change
frame size to 'original' in order to preserve quality and aspect ratio. There are many other video converters on the market but AVS is a good one.
My supposition was correct DVD Maker produced a perfect DVD from the wmv file. It's unfortunate that Microsoft haven't found a solution to this problem because otherwise DVD Maker does a fine job.
    CONCLUSION
Convert your file to an hmv file and then use DVD Maker

    Hi
The error log doesnt provide any very useful information.
According to this error log the simulation was running correct but the burning process was not started.
In such case its very hard to say why it happens. Possibly the drive is damage and cannot calibrate the lens properly or you use not compatible medias.
The burning process depands also on the fiels and data which youwant to burn.
Some data, CD, DVDs are encrypted and its not possible to burn and to copy it.
In other case you could also try to burn the medias with lower speed and not with 24x.
But in worth case you the drive has a malfunction and you have to replace it ;(

  • I am trying to burn a dvd and it will not allow me to do this because it states that i do not have enough space for encoding disk. how do i free up space and from where?

I am trying to burn a dvd and it will not allow me to do this because it states I do not have enough space for encoding. how do i free up space and from where?

iDVD can only use your startup hard disk for the "scratch space" it needs for calculations during the encoding process.  25 GB is a good average requirement, but a large project (3 or 4 hours of content) might require more.
To free up space, you will have to move items to an external hard drive and/or delete items you no longer want.
Please note that iDVD can't use and external hard drive for this "scratch space".

  • Why can't I burn a DVD of photos from my iPhoto that will be viewable on a Windows computer?

Why can't I burn a DVD of photos from my iphotos that will be viewable on a PC using windows?

Darned if I know. What exactly are you doing?
The general answer is to select the photo(s) in iPhoto and export to a desktop folder (file menu ==> export). In the finder right click on that folder and burn to disk

  • Idvd will not burn a dvd

I have tried to burn a dvd with no luck, I have a macbook for over two years and never has the idvd been able to burn a dvd. The dvd is ejected just before it is done "less than a minute remaining" the disk is always blank. I have put several projects together in idvd and can only view it on my macbook. Everything is updated, I have spent alot of time tring to get the idvd to burn but no luck. Is there anything else that I can use to burn a dvd?

Compose the DVD, recording it to the desktop. Will have img after the name. After you've composed the DVD ready for burn, instead of using iDVD, choose from the top left, drop down menu, for burn to disc image. (That's the same menu drop down you use for choosing your film in the first place.) When that's done, click on the disc icon which has appeared on the desktop, that one with img after the name, and that will make a box appear showing video and audio records. Click on the red + to get rid of it. That action will have made the disc to be seen and ready for burn in Utilities. Chose Go from the screen top and then Utilities - Disc Utility App. On the left side of the box is that name followed by img. Click on it. Go the top and in Images menu go down to burn and click on it. Your drawer ready for the burn should open. Pace your disk in the tray and choose Close. When Burn comes up, small box to the right, click on that and await results. Good luck.

  • How to burn a slideshow to DVD for anyone to play. I burned a DVD and can play it on my mac, but will not open in windows

Need to know how to burn a DVD that can be viewed by any DVD player.  I created a DVD from a slideshow created in iPhoto.  I can open it on my computer, but it will not open or even be recognized in my home DVD player.  I asked a friend to try it on a Windows computer and he could not open it.  What's the key to creating things for friends & family that do not have Mac anything?
