Will SNOW LEOPARD be downloadable from Apple's website?

Hi,
I am currently outside of the US in South Asia and am really anxious in getting my hands on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. There is currently no Apple Store anywhere near here, but was wondering will Apple distribute their software via a download similar to Microsoft with their operating systems? I hope so, I really want to upgrade my OS, by purchasing it, of course.

Before getting Snow Leopard on your machine, backup your data at least twice*, and dismount and disconnect all third party peripherals. If you don't, you may be stuck if there is some lurking condition that won't allow installation.
See my upgrade FAQ* for other possible pitfalls. Don't be so anxious. You may end up being more anxious if you get it on your machine and aren't prepared. Allow this trip to be time for you to become prepared. And enjoy the trip. When I'm on a trip, I never install anything new, because carrying extra luggage is always a hassle, and I might need it if something goes wrong during the installation.

  • Running 10.5.8 on Intel Core Duo, Snow Leopard disc (purchased from Apple) won't work

I am running 10.5.8 on my iMac and want to upgrade to Lion. Was told to upgrade to Snow Leopard first. Purchased the Snow Leopard install DVD from Apple, but it begins the installation process then says CD is dirty. Hooked up an external DVD drive and tried again, got the same message. I literally unwrapped the disc and put it directly into the drive...it couldn't have gotten so scratched or dirty that it wouldn't work.
    Here is my system info:
    Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac4,1
      Processor Name:          Intel Core Duo
      Processor Speed:          1.83 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          2 MB
      Memory:          1.5 GB
Any ideas on what I can do? I've read that there were tons of problems with this disc/upgrade...
    Thanks!

Call the place you bought Snow Leopard from, and ask for them to replace the disk as it or your DVD drive is obviously defective.   As others have noted, you can't upgrade to Lion regardless.
That said, before you install 10.6, be sure you really are prepared for it: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
And if after getting a replacement 10.6 disk it fails to install, verify your PRAM battery is not over 4 years old, and that your optical drive isn't dirty by bringing it in for service.

  • I have 10.5.8 and want to upgrade, Do I have to download Snow Leopard before download the Mountain Lion?

I have 10.5.8 and want to upgrade, Do I have to download Snow Leopard before download the Mountain Lion?

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

  • How can I upgrade to Snow Leopard or Lion from Leopard 10.5.8?

I can't find any way to get Snow Leopard from the apple store. It is on Amazon for $100+ and there are lots of fake ''free'' downloads online, but I don't want to use them?
Is there any ways to get to Snow Leopard or Lion from this old opperating system?!
My mac is a 2008 Macbook Pro.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
I just bought the iphone 5 but have a 2009 Macbook Pro so was running 10.5.8. Needed to upragde to snow leopard then to mountain lion. S.L. is no longer available in stores. The guy in the shop told to cal apple support (0800 048 0408) but was skepitcal. Amazin was quite expensive so I ended up ringing just to check... TOTALLY WORTH IT! Got it for £13, when I would have paid about £70. Apparently they are trying to encourage people to get SL so they can get the icloud.
Ring up! Honestly, their customer serivce was so helpful and lovely. Whole episode has reminded me why I love Apple.

  • Can I back up computer with time machine on lion then reinstall snow leopard and restore from backup safely

Can I back up computer with time machine on lion then reinstall snow leopard and restore from backup safely?

If your machine came with Snow Leopard or earlier and you have your install disks, yes, you can reinstall SL. However, you will need to erase the entire hard drive so you will lose all your files. Also note that there are some apps (such as Mail) which can't be downgraded "automatically" such as with a restore from Time Machine. Here is some info on TM:

  • I want to go back to Snow Leopard 10.6 from Lion. Quicken 2007 is not compatible with Lion.

I want to go back to Snow Leopard 10.6 from Lion 10.7.2. Quicken 2007 is not compatible with Lion and I don't like Quicken Essentials 2012.

    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • My MacBook (10.5.8) is very slow and has significant problems loading will Snow Leopard (10.6.3) help or make my computer slower?

My MacBook (10.5.8) is very slow and has significant problems loading will Snow Leopard (10.6.3) help or make my computer slower?
Also why does my Macbook make so much noise (The noise concerns me because it is so loud it sounds like the laptop will break down or something at any point)?

It depends on your Macbook model how to open the bottom case.
Anyway you need to open up the buttom case or keyboard panel to access the CPU fan like following.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hHA4DDEvZA
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Core+2+Duo+Lower+Case+Replacement/537
If you think you can't do that by yourself, you'd better bring it to Apple Store Genius Bar or Authorized Servce Shop to tell them about the problem.

  • HT3669 hp deskjet all in one 4488 printer software downloaded from apple does not work

The printer software for HP Deskjet all in one F4488 downloaded from Apple support for OS 10.8.2 does not work. The problem is that the software is not available at the HP support site only.

Your apparently older Model needs to use Apple's "Print & Scan" which is found in Applications>System Prefernces>Print & Scan.  There you will follow the following instructions from the HP Support site to Scan, for instance:
Place the item that you want to scan on the scanner glass, or load it into the automatic document feeder (ADF) if your printer has one.
Click the Apple menu ( ), and then click System Preferences .
    Click Print & Scan ( ).
Click your printer in the left pane.
Click Scan , and then click Open Scanner .
Click Show Details . The details of the scan display, including options to change scan settings.Figure 4: Example of the Show Details scanning screen
Change any scan settings as necessary, and then click Scan .NOTE: Make sure to select either the Flatbed mode or the Document Feeder mode, depending on your printer and how you plan to scan.
    Hope this helps

Is it safe to make in app puchases in a game downloaded from apple store (a game named "lawless" per example) or my card may be hacked???

You can try the 'report a problem' link to contact iTunes Support and see if they will refund or credit you : http://reportaproblem.apple.com
If the 'report a problem' link doesn't work then you can try contacting iTunes Support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption
To try and stop it happening again you can use Settings > General > Restrictions on the device to prevent in-app purchases being made, and you might (depending upon its iOS version) also have a 'Require Password' option on the Restrictions screen that you can set to 'Immediately' so that your account's password has to be entered for each download from the store.

iTunes Store: Error (-50) when downloading purchased videos
Last Modified on: April 24, 2007
    Article: 303887
    Symptom
The following alerts may appear when trying to download purchased videos from the iTunes Store:
"There was an error downloading your purchased music. An unknown error occurred (-50)."
This can happen when the connection timeout occurs while downloading purchased video content from the iTunes Store.
    Products affected
    iTunes Store
    iTunes for Windows
    iTunes for Mac OS X
    Purchased video content
    Solution
Deleting the cached video files of the download, and starting the download again from the beginning, often will resolve this issue.
To find the cached video downloads:
Navigate to the downloads folder on your system. This folder can be found in the following locations:
    Mac:
    ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Downloads
Note: The tilde (~) refers to your Home directory.
    Windows Vista:
    \Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Downloads\
    Windows XP and 2000:
    \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Downloads\
Locate the folder that contains the cached video file for this purchase.
In Windows Vista, the folder will be named for the purchased video, and the name will end with .tmp.
    Example: The Dundies.tmp
In Windows XP and Windows 2000, the folder will be named for the purchased video, and the name will end with .m4v.tmp.
    Example: The Dundies.m4v.tmp
Move the .tmp folder for the affected purchased video to the Trash or Recycle Bin.
    Open iTunes.
From the Store menu, choose Check for Purchases.
Enter your account name and password and click the Check button.

  • Mac App Store Upgrade advantages vs Download from Apple Web ?

Since latest OSX versions the upgrades are checked in App Store and the download of the upgrade follows in App Store.
I have checked with latest OS upgrade (10.8.1 and 10.8.2) and also now with Aperture 3.4.1 that the download time inside App Store is twice longer compared with a direct download from Apple.  More interesting is that the download gives me a file that I can use to upgrade not only my iMac but also my Mac Book Pro.
The upgrade notification in App Store reached my Mac while the related file is not to befound in the italian Apple site but if I change to us I immediately find the file.

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
Yes, OS X updates from the Apple Downloads page will work. If your version of Aperture is from the MAS, the update from the MAS should not be able to update it, that is for the previously sold boxed software.

No - Leopard is the end of the line as of now (and probably forever) for PPC
As announced Snow Leopard requires an Intel processor - http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
