Will SSD speed up iDVD

Hi,
have a nice MacPro 2010 4core 12gig with fast boot and user drives and two slow archive drives.
Am pretty disappointed with how long my iDVD takes to make either a TS_Folder or a Disc Image from my projects.
Would getting an SSD Drive to boot & run iLife on Speed things up?
If so, by how much? If it's just a few percent I'll shrug and live with it, but shaving even 25% off a 4hr encode is still a full hour!
Activity monitor shows app fluctuates between 100 and 200% during most of the encodes.
Getting impression From the dramatic fluctuations in percentages that the CPUs are getting starved by a bottle neck at the hard drive level.

  • To controle burning speed in iDVD

I'v got a PowerBook G4 from 2001 I found out that my computer can only read up to 4 x speed dvds. I have then later found out that I can still burn faster dvd's but I just have to burn the dvd in 4x speed.
The question is then how do you controle the wrtting speed in iDVD.

    I then burned it on a dvd+
DVD-R is more compatible with DVD players.
I recommend a disk image burned to Verbatim DVD-R at 4X or slower using Toast or Disk Utility.
David Pogue also recommends Verbatim on page 356 of his latest book:

  • Will SSD drives works?

    Hi all,
Will SSD Drives works in a MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2008) and also in a Mac Pro (Early 2008).
Is there anyone who did the test already?
    Thanks for your reply !!
    Bart Mulier

A slight problem with the Mac Pro is that these are 2.5 inch form factor drives, and they do not attach happily to the stock drive Bay sleds. There are a number of alternatives, including:
install "loose" in the second Optical bay, if available
remove the metal enclose and just install the "bare" circuit card.
buy a 2.5/3.5 Mac Pro sled for your model Mac Pro
N.B. there are TWO models of sleds, so two models of replacement sleds -- be sure to get the correct one for your Mac Pro
Buy an ICE Box or similar mechanical enclosure that adapts the 2.5 drive to 3.5 mounting for a Mac Pro
    and one more...
... OWC sells some drives in 3.5 form factor, but you have to know to look for them.

  • Qosmio F60-10K and SSD Speed

Hello I have new problem xD maybe not so big :)
I bought Calisto Mushkin Delux SSD 240 B speed is 285/275...
I install Windows what get with my laptop via Recovery DVDs and I put out-of-box installation , my SSD speed on benchmark is about 150/145 and not over 200 like I bought I read somewhere its not good for SSD to put IMAGE, and Toshiba Windwos Recovery CD put IMAGE on and I think this is because of this it decrease my speed of SSD.
So quastion is how to put Speed on SSD over 200 mb is maybe solution to install some fresh Windwos 7 not out of box or ?
Btw2... I want to crypt my SSD with TrueCrypt 7.0A ... how this decrease my SSD speed if someone know.
Thank you all who help me, last problem what I put on this forum was resolved because nice people :) ty all !

    Hey,
Of course you can test it with your own Windows installation but I doubt its a problem of preinstalled OS from Toshiba. I mean this image is tested and configured for your notebook
In your case I would also check the firmware version of your SSD. Maybe there is an update for it.
Make also sure that BIOS version of your notebook is newest one.

  • Dumb question: Could an SSD speed up STP?

I regularly use Soundtrack Pro on an early 2008 Mac Pro. My boot drive also has all my apps, but I record into a different internal drive. I'm wondering whether swapping that recording drive out for a SSD could speed up either/both recording and editing operations on files that average approximately 1.5 Gigabytes in size?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

David is on the right track here.
I've been playing with some mods for an early 2008 that wants very fast throughput. We've determined that an SSD system drive will allow the computer to access system and application code at 2-3 times the "normal" speed. Assuming that all processors are suitably tasked, the system should be executing those instructions at close to full efficiency. In most cases, the applications are working towards a reduction of data for output, so the only question remaining question is how fast do the storage drives for the output need to be? In some cases, a normal SATA drive may suffice. In other cases, SATA3 or a RAID may be required to round out the package,
    Hope this helps.

  • SSD speed boot

Let's see if you can help me, I installed a ssd samsung 840 pro on my K430, I noticed that if I boot from the original disk disconnecting 2tb (cleansed of all, without oem partition recovery) does not appear at boot logo lenovo speeding many seconds of the start of the pC. just connect even the original disc logo appears again. how can it be?

    hi andrea__87,
Just to verify, do you mean you get stucked at the Lenovo logo when you try to boot from the preloaded Windows 8 4bit OS on 2TB HDD? If this is the case, can you try to:
    1. Boot into the BIOS by pressing F1
2.. Inside the BIOS, navigate to the Startup Tab and make sure UEFI Boot Mode is set to UEFI then press F10 to save and exit BIOS.
    3. If you get the same error, try to press F9 on the BIOS screen to load factory default then press F10 to save and exit.
    Let me know your findings
    Cheers

  • T400S full SSD speed for secondary drives (eSATA, ultrabay, dock)?

Does the T400s delivier the full speed of SSDs (SATA-II 3 Gbps, ex: 220MB/Sec seq transfer of the X25-M) when the SSD is used
    - in ultrabay
    - on eSATA port
    - on eSATA port of the Mini Dock (Plus Series 3)
The T400 seems to deliver the full speed of SSDs when used as primary drive:

Many thanks for your responses.  In the meantime I have purchased Vertex 2 Sata II drive and the installation has gone perfectly.  This new drive is giving me a far better experience - first noticed in the speed of installing my software: Office, VS2010, SQL 2008R2 etc.  Blindingly fast!
As for alignment - the previous installation was checked and was aligned.  In fact I have read that Win 7 will automatically align when installed to an SSD.
My hope is that this newer version of SSD with the Sandforce controller will not degrade as the original one did.  The difference in performance from new to 18 months of use was quite significant!
    Cheers and thanks again,

  • When i create a slideshow in iphoto using the ken burns effect it will not work in idvd. any tips please.

when i create a slideshow in iphoto with the ken burns effect it works fine. when i then transfer it to idvd it will not work. any tips please.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
how are you getting the slideshow into iDVD?
what size slideshow did you send to iDVD?
can you export the slideshow to the Desktop and play it with Quicktime Player there?
    what fixes have you tried?
how much free space on your boot drive?
Here's how you should create and sent a slideshow to iDVD from iPhoto:
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  For iPhoto 9.4.3 and earlier select Size = Medium or Large. For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Slideshow created with iphoto will not burn with idvd

I cannot seem to burn dvd using idvd.  slideshow created with iphoto

I'm having the same problem after upgrading to 10.3.9 and iphoto 4.0.3. Read below:
Until recently I was running 10.1.5 using iphoto 2 to burn folders of photos within a library. After upgrading to 10.3.9 and iphoto 4.0.3 I get a message: “The burn to the ARCHOS MiniCDRW XS8432 drive failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.”
Actually, I got another message before I installed patchburn 3.1.2. After installing patchburn 3.1.2 for 10.3.X, system profiler recognized my burner and says it is supported but the above message is displayed after the program has stopped the process.
Toast Titanium 5.2.1 burns CD’s just fine but when a CD with an iphoto library is inserted into the CD-ROM the iphoto program will not recognize it. In other words, it won’t show up in iphoto as an iphoto library or anything for that matter. Maybe there’s a way to do this in Toast or maybe I need something else to make iphoto work with my burner.
    Can anybody help me? Thanks!

  • If I move from Firewire 400 to 800 will download speed of video increase?

    Hi,
I have just upgraded from a MacMini (which had firewire 400) to a new iMac which only has firewire 800. I have a 3 year old JVC digital camcorder (GR-D340EK) with ilink out and previously used a Belkin cable to connect to my Macmini. My question is if I now purchase an ilink to FW800 cable for the iMac will the video download at twice the rate or am I just as well to purchase a cheaper FW 400 to 800 adapter, which I understand would only give me FW400 speeds (and could be used for other devices too)?
    Any advice guys?
    Regards
    Shakey

Either way, the speed of the connection will be the same. The device itself is FireWire 400, so it will not go any faster.
You can often find the cable for about the same price as the adapter. What you need, if the camera has the smaller FireWire connector, is a 9-pin to 4-pin cable, like this one

  • My burner will not burn in IDVD

Using IMovie I created a movie and sent it to IDVD to burn.  The DVD player spits the disk out saying "Insert  a recordable DVD disk."    I have tried several different disks-  Memorex DVD-RW 2x 4.7GB /  or a TDK  DVD-R   16x 4.7 GB and several others I have had around the house.  They all get rejected.  Is it my DVD burner or am I using the wrong type/speed DVD disks to burn my movie?

First, make sure your burner is clean; a Scotch CD Laser Lense Cleaner works well to make sure there isn't any dust  on your lens. Don't get one with liquid solution.
You've tried several brands of blanks, and I assume you've had prior success with this software.

  • DVD WILL NOT BURN IN IDVD

Trying to burn a project in IDVD, goes through the entire process up to "Writing Lead-In" and about 6 minutes left, the disk is ejected automatically. When put back in process gets hung up. Have also saved as a "Disk Image on my desktop and plays with no issues via the DVD software. When I select to burn to Disc, within 1 minute disk is ejected and this message comes up "The Disk can"t burn, because the device failed to calibrate the Laser Power for this Media". Is this a software or hardware issue? Or something else

    Hi
    • Trashing pref file - first thing to do (free and easy)
    • Cheap media is often a problem - I use Verbatim DVD-R and burn at x4 speed
    • Free space - is important BUT only on start-up hard disk (others doesn't matter)
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    iDVD pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named.
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/ zzzzzzzzzz
    or
    Macintosh HD/Users/Your log-in//Library/Application Support/iDVD/Installed Themes/ zzzzzzzzzz
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !
    iDVD updated ?
    Apple Codec updated ?
Start a New Clean project - or delete project assets
No of Colors - must be set to millions
EdinSF writes that, The 10.6.3 update with an Open GL fix seems to have taken care of the problem.

  • Iphoto will not load into iDVD after upgrade

When trying to open current and new projects in iDVD, the project opens, and plays, but the photos from iPhoto never load, the loading icon just spins on and on. When I open a new document, the same thing happens. The problem started after I upgraded to Leopard 10.5.6. Also upgraded to iLife '09, so I'm working with iphoto 8.0 and iDVD 7.0.3. I'm assuming it has something to do with the upgrades. I've checked to make sure all software updates are current, and they are. I am able to access iTunes thru iDVD without a problem. The themes appear with no problem. But the iPhoto images never load. iPhoto appears to be working with no problems. I am stuck.

Give these basic remedies a try. Quit iDVD and delete your iDVD preferences. To do this, go to your username> library> preferences> com.apple.idvd.plist. Delete this file. Then reopen iDVD; it will create a new preference file with all of the default settings.
Do a verify and repair of permissions using Disk Utility.
Restart your computer after these procedures.
    I hope this helps.
