Will the base 13' Air suffice for Film editing for a college student?

I was considering the machine due to it's portability and low entry price but I am concerned about it's possible lack of editing power for my college courses.

That is completely subjective. What are college level films? How do they differ from any other type of film?
Go out and buy a base model 13" Air and test it. You have 14 days from date of purchase to return it for a full refund. If it doesn't meet your need then either get one with a faster CPU and more RAM or buy something else that will work at the speed you want. It is not about will it do it, it will do whatever you want. It is about the speed it will do the work you want it to do. Again this is subjective as only you can tell if it is working fast enough for you.

I am considering purchasing the Mac mini for home studio audio production using Adobe Audition and a USB microphone.  Will the base mini model run these programs?

The base mini has 4GB and a 5400 RPM hard drive. It is slow to start up and slow to launch large application such as Word (and I'd assume Adobe Audition) due to the slow drive. I've not used a new 4GB model, just the 8GB model, and the 8GB model (except for the slow drive) handles everything I've thrown at it, including running Photoshop, Word, Safari, and Mail at the same time but there is sometimes a delay switching between programs as the swapfile is updated. Overall I was not happy with the 5400 RPM drive (perhaps because I have MBA and iMac with Fusion drive) so I eventually upgraded it with an SSD. Now the mini is truly a warrior.

  • How many music cd's will the new Ipad air hold in 16g, 32g and 64g?

How many music cd's will the new Ipad air hold in 16g, 32g and 64g? Thanks much, Greg

That is hard to say accuratetely. As it depends on the format and length of audio. If you know the average file size of the Audio files you wish to transfer you can easily calculate.
Otherwise its like asking how many books fit in a 2 by 2 box  The answer will vary largely by type and size of book.
For a base comparison normal mp3's at around 3 minutes in length take up about 1MB per minute. so you could probably fit 20,000 of those in a 64GB iPad. considering some space is taken up by apps and OS.
Double the size for more quality, and you'll get about half. so only 10,000.
But at the end it will depend on the format, and file size of the audio.

The old interface wasn't perfect but logical - as you say the icons are for the iPhone and iPad crowd, and as i see it will entail more scrolling and button hopping on the remote.

    Quelle surprise......
It's a bit like the redesign of these discussion fora - the new layouts are designed for the younger generation but far too much scrolling and hard work to find what you want compared to the old format.

I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. You would need to ask that directly to Apple. Apple is not here nor does Apple answer questions here.
To return an iOS product requires a valid receipt. You have 30 days to return an iPhone. The iPhone must have all original packaging & accessories and be in new condition. Apple may charge a restocking fee on a returned iPhone.
If the iPhone was bought from a 3rd party, their regulations for returns would apply.

  • ***CALLING ALL MACBOOK AIR USERS*** Will the base model of the 2013 Macbook Air 11" be enough for my needs?

    Ok,
This is my first post to this forum.
I have a Late 2011 i5 Macbook Pro. I used this last year during college but the weight was just unbearable. I have decided this year to upgrade to a Macbook Air. Here is my question.
I am starting uni and will be studying Nursing and so I will not be using any heavy software or progaming etc.
The only thing I will use is Office for Mac and browsing. I normally keep around 15 browser tabs open whilst I research.
I also like to download so I would also like Vuse on my Macbook too. I own an external hardrive and so memory isnt a big deal (unless it makes a difference to the performance of the mac itself, Sorry im not great with this stuff)
Do you guys think the base model of the 11" Macbook Air (1.3ghz, 4GB ram, 128GB SSD) will be enough for my needs or do you think I would need to custom build it (1.7ghz, 8GB ram, 128GB SSD)?
My boyfriend thinks for what im using it for the base model will be fine but I dont want to get it to find that its not enough as my main concern is lag but I also do not want to pay extra for something which isnt going to be fully used (ie my current Macbook Pro).
For those of you who do have the 11' Macbook air, how are you finding it? Also, this will be my main computing device, I am selling my Pro but am thinking of buying the wireless keyboard and trackpad so I can connect to an extenal monitor whilst im at home.
Thank you guys in adavnce for any answers.

I too have a 2011 mackbook pro and I also have a mid 2012 mackbook air 128 gb ssd and 4 gb ram , I am probably goint to sell the pro because I just don't use it anymore . If you intend to do heavy multi tasking 8gb ram as suggested by a previous poster might be worth the extra money.

  • Will the new MacBook Air be able to handle what I need it for?

I'm about to buy my first ever Mac, exciting right?
Anywho, I was set on getting a MacBook (or possibly pro) then the new MacBook Air came out, after looking at it and doing a bit of research it seems to be a fantastic computer but I'm not sure if it can handle what I'll be using it for.
On a general day to day basis, I use these programs:
    - a Web Browser (surfing the web and watching online video mostly)
    - iTunes
    - Scrivener (Writing Software)
    - Skype
    - AIM
    - Microsoft Office
On about a weekly+ basis, I'll be using these programs:
    - iMovie
    - Adobe Flash CS5 Professional
    - Adobe Photoshop CS5
    - Other Adobe programs?
Other little tidbits that may be helpful:
    - I'm a college student (And though I don't write a lot of essays, stupid technical classes, I will next year because...)
    - I'll most likely major in Graphic Design, English or both.
    - I spend a lot of time on the computer.
    - I'm not a gamer, outside of the occasional online game
    - I'm not planning on keeping too much on the computer. (Only programs and whatever project(s) I'm currently working on. Everything else will be kept in an external hard drive or Dropbox. Too keep away clutter and because having so many PC's crash on me has made me paranoid.)
I like the new MacBook Air because it's small and light and has the perfect amount of battery to fit my needs (I hardly ever keep my computer away from a plug for more than 7 hours) Also I really never use my CD drive on my laptop, in fact I think I only used it twice this past year. So really my only concern is that I'll buy it and end up discovering that it doesn't fit my needs, hence this post.
Beyond this I only have three questions:
1.) How much memory should I have? (I do want some wiggle room)
2.) Does a mini jack mean I have to buy special headphones or an adapter?
3.) Does the Facetime Camera = Web Cam? Can I use it for the same purposes? (ex. taking photos/videos, video chat through Skype, etc.)
And the main question: Would the New MacBook Air work for me? If not, which Mac should I get instead? (I'm getting a 13" laptop across the board)
And I probably posted way too much information about my computer life, but if there is anything I learned from taking technical classes its that the more information I can give the better suited computer you can advice me to get.
So thanks to anyone who responds!

    witsallbeendonebefore wrote:
The extra 2GB would make any computer run faster. Could you maybe explain more?
Absolutely. The 13" MBA (baseline configuration) at $1299 weighs in at $100 more than the 13" MBP, upgrade the MBA to 4GB and it's now $200 more. So you're paying more money for comparable or "slightly" better performance.
There's been a lot of performance benchmarks released over the past 4 days since I made my initial remark. Not to mention in that time I've had the opportunity to use a 13" MBA with 2GB & 4GB of RAM, although I had more time with the 2GB model. Some observations:
1.) What happens when you need to install something that's only available via CD or DVD? Part two of that question, what happens if you don't have access to a computer with an optical drive to share over to the MBA?
2.) What if you require FireWire connectivity or need to troubleshoot your computer via TDM?
3.) How do you manage 128GB?
4.) How do you run a presentation from the machine with an IR-base remote?
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm a big fan of the MBA, I was one of the first in line to buy one when the first generation came out and I made the 2nd generation MBA my "go to" mobile computer for well over a year. I've been very pleased with currently MBA, but it's not a jack of all trades and while it may be faster than my 13" MBP there are still scenarios that require features the MBP has 'standard' that the MBA does not offer or requires more $$ to implement.
My initial comment about "sluggish" performance was in respect to LightRoom3, Starcraft II, World of Warcraft and Adobe Photoshop CS5. I'll absolutely agree that equalizing the RAM would definitely help to level the playing field but thus far in my testing with the 13" MBA @ 4GB versus the 13" MBP @ 4GB there's still some noticeable difference in favor of the MBP.

  • Will the new generation 16GB iPad have enough RAM for digital drawing apps?

I am shopping for iPad.  Will the new generation iPad Air or iPad Mini with retina display 16GB have enough memory to run digital drawing apps with stylus?

    As to the how:
    Use one of these:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD821ZM/A/lightning-to-usb-camera-adapter
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD822ZM/A/lightning-to-sd-card-camera-reader?f node=3a
    To do this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4101
Now for the storage and why getting the "largest" iPad you can afford. 16GB is not much, especially when it comes to photos and video. Assuming you have a relatively modern camera, each photo will likely be a minimum of 5 MB. Extrapolate that and 5,000 Photos is already significantly more storage than 16GB, not counting iOS, any apps and other data.

  • Computer for Video Editing for the Present and Beyond

In an earlier post I announced that I have been a Premiere Elements user since Day One, and I also mentioned I was looking to have a new computer built from scratch rather than purchase from Dell or HP. I am close to finalizing that build, and am looking forward to upgrading to Elements 8.0. I am also looking forward to becoming a subscriber to Muvipix.com. Becoming a part of the Adobe Premiere Elements Forum coupled with being an eventual subscriber to Muvipix.com has elevated my enthusiasm for video editing. Special Thanks go to Bill Hunt and Steve Grisetti for anchoring this Adobe Pre E Forum. Your advice has motivated me to take my video editing with Premiere Elements to another level.
Speaking of advice, what does everyone think of the following specifications for my new computer? Is this a solid computer for video editing? In some cases some components lack specificity (model numbers, brand names, et cetera). Suggestions and comments will be greatly appreciated as I take this final step. Thanks to all!
    ATX Antec     193 Computer Case

I read your computer spec sheet. Thanks for sharing. You  said the ideal thing to do is use the computer just for video editing.  Best way to go. However, you still need an OS, which requires updates.  And you need to update drivers, and then there are product updates and  add-ons. You need to connect with the Internet to do all of this
I do not have $$ or space to have 2 computers, so my single computer is for day to day work, and video editing as a hobbyist... which of course is not "ideal" for video editing... but I don't make $$ at this, so I use what I have
I am still learning about Win7 64bit, so do not have all the startup process optimized... that is my next project, to figure out what does not need to be running, and remove that un-needed stuff from the startup
You also asked about backup... the IMAGE program I use is mentioned in http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/ADOBE.HTM#SmartOwn
I make a boot drive image to external USB hard drive before installing any new software

  • What preset MacBook pro would be better for video editing and eventually college?, What preset MacBook pro would be better for video editing and eventually college?

    Hi,
I am thinking about getting a MacBook Pro.  My current computer is very very old and can not be used.  I would like to use it for video editing and eventually to use when I go to college.  I want to get one of the preset 13 inch MBPs.  I do not know which one will be better for my purposes.  Could anyone please help me??

Any computer made today, Windows or Mac, will be MILES ahead of what you are now using.
Raw CPU speed is not the total benchmark of a computer. Look at it this way. A 2.6GHz CPU made today is much faster then a 2.6GHz CPU made just a few years ago, like 3 years ago. the difference between a 2.6 and a 2.9GHz CPU is 3 tens of 1 GHz, 300MHz. The percentage difference is about 8-9 percent (.08-.09). Back when CPUs were listed in MHz, 120, 300, 600, if you have a 300MHz CPU and you replaced it with one that was 300MHz faster that was a Big Jump. You doubled the computing power. Today 300MHz, .3GHz, is next to nothing. Especially for the price jump.
Note that when you make the switch you will either need to update your program, that means Re-Buying most of them, to work on the Mac OS or install a version of Windows in either a Boot Camp partition, Dual booting the Mac, or into a Virtual Machine software program to run the Windows version of those program.
If you decide on a Mac buy the BASE model that is offered for the CPU speed you want. The RAM and hard drive can be upgraded by you for much less then what Apple charges for those upgrades. With the hard drive if you upgrade it to a larger and faster drive, Apple supplies 5400RPM drives, like a 7200RPM drive you get to Keep the original drive to use in any way you like. Like an external drive.

  • Alternative to a Named Sets in Microsoft Cube for Analysis Edition for OLAP

SAP has told me via there support system that they do not support Named Sets in Microsoft Analysis cubes and I need to be able to create specific time parameters to ease reporting requirements.  We are migrating off ProClarity and onto Analysis Edition for OLAP and need to be able to create these specific time dimensions.  I don't want to use custom groups as this would be hardcoding the values for the dates.  Is there any alternative to have these dates available in the Analysis application?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When connecting to SSAS in a cluster, you do not specify an instance name.  In your case, you would use the name of the SSAS IP address to connect.
    See:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn141153.aspx
For servers deployed in a failover cluster, connect using the network name of the SSAS cluster. This name is specified during SQL Server setup, as
SQL Server Network Name. Note that if you installed SSAS as a named instance onto a Windows Server Failover Cluster (WSFC), you never add the instance name on the connection. This practice is unique to SSAS; in contrast, a named
instance of a clustered relational database engine does include the instance name. For example, if you installed both SSAS and the database engine as named instance (Contoso-Accounting) with a SQL Server Network Name of SQL-CLU, you would connect to SSAS using
"SQL-CLU" and to the database engine as "SQL-CLU\Contoso-Accounting". See
How to Cluster SQL Server Analysis Services for more information and examples.
