Will the bash fix for Lion work on Snow Leopard?

Will the bash fix for Lion that fixes a security flaw in the bash UNIX shell, work on Snow Leopard?
OS X bash Update 1.0 - OS X Lion

Unfortunately this is not the path to security since it appears other services like CUPS use bash.
I agree. When I tried using symlinks to send calls to bash & sh to tcsh instead, I found a lot of broken shell scripts. I don't think tcsh has been maintained very well since it's use with OS X 10.0 through 10.2.  I had better luck with xsh, though.
This is what I used for a day or so with Mavericks:
sudo mv /bin/bash /bin/bash.bak
sudo mv /bin/sh /bin/sh.bak
sudo ln -s /bin/zsh /bin/sh
sudo ln -s /bin/zsh /bin/bash

    1. For actually booting Snow Leopard, it depends on the model; click here and see what the mimimum OS for yours is.
    2. All of them can run Mac OS X 10.6 Server inside a product such as VirtualBox or Parallels Desktop.

  • Will the new 2012 Mac pros boot on Snow Leopard (10.6.8, installed on a HD in a 2008 Mac pro and then moved to the 2012 model).

I keep getting fuzzy answers on this (firmware, future updates, etc.). I can make a 2 partition HD on my 2008 (3.1), with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on 1, and Lion on the other, and then put this HD in the 2012 3.06ghz. Will it work? (It does on the 2010 2.93ghz).

Tony https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4051765?tstart=0 Never got back and until someone who received a "new" Mac Pro 5,1 (5,2? just for laughs?) to know.
Apple ties OS build and fiirmware and Mac ID.
It should after all nothing really changed. In this case it has the same latest firmware that shipped iwth some 2010s
We had discussions about this when Mac Pro 2010 started shipping with Lion last... summer/fall.
A true Lion only system ships not only without DVDs, and with Lion, but can do a network install (it grabs a small boot loader) to pull down the installer and has enough code in the firmware. Same with AHT.
    A. It (10.6.8) works and you are fine
    B. It works only with Lion.
What is the real question? do you need to run 10.6.8?
There is a 1/20 chance too that it has a later build of 10.7.4, right?

  • Why doesn't the desktop 'snap to grid' work with Snow Leopard?

I've recently upgraded my OS to Snow Leopard and I do a lot of work with photo folders which I keep organized on my desktop. Since upgrading the 'snap to grid' function in the view options of the desktop preferences has stopped working. For some reason the folders and files on the desktop keep snapping off the screen or on top of each other so that I cannot find them easily. I've had to turn off the 'snap to grid' and the desktop no longer looks organized and is not easy to navigate. Why is this happening? AND, how do I fix it? It seems to me the snap to grid shouldn't have gone out the window with an upgraded OS. I'm very organized and borderline OCD so this is FRUSTRATING me to no end!!!
    Anyone have any ideas?

It's working for me in 10.6. Try moving this file in your Home Folder/Library to the trash -- don't empty it yet.
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
When finished go back to the Desktop>View Options and select Snap to grid.
If that doesn't do it, open Terminal in utilities and copy/paste this command, then hit return. Don't attempt to type it in by hand. If you make a typo or get the spaces wrong, there could be a disaster. When finished go back to the Desktop>View Options and select Snap to grid.
    rm ~/Desktop/.DS_Store

  • The Firewire Disk don't work After Snow Leopard 10.6.1

    Dear Apple friend
I've a big problem... I've 6 firewire external hard disk (400 and 800) with my work.
And now I can use it after Snow Leopard update to 10.6.1.
    How I can resolve it???
    I need to work!!!!
    thanks
    Walter from Italy

Have you reset the FireWire bus? Did you try a different cable?
If so and things still don't function properly your only choice may be rolling back the system.
If you search these forums and with Google you will find lots of issues like these. If you need these disks to work your only choice is to roll back your system software.

Hi, you might want to run over what you mean by that.
    You have tried VLC?

  • I get an error when I try to print after installing Lion - worked under Snow Leopard - /System/Library/Printers/Libraries/PrintJobMgr/Contents/MacOS/PrintJobMgr failed

I have not been able to print pictures nor any text since installing Lion.  I receive the message in the subject which is totally meaningless.

When you upgrade from a previous OS there is always a chance that you will bring some setting that is not compatible with the new OS. This can be the driver as noondaywitch suggests but it can also be the core printing system. In the case of the latter, it is a good idea to reset the printing system when a core error occurs. Note that the reset sets the printing system back to default and removes your currently installed printer and scanner queues. But it does not remove the supporting drivers, so you only need to install the driver again.
How to Reset the Printing System
    1. Open System Preferences > Print & Scan/Fax
    2. Move your mouse over the Printers list
    3. Hold down the Control button and click the mouse
    4. Click the "Reset printing system ..." popup
    5. Restart your Mac
Just one additional thing to note. In checking the supported printer list for 10.6 from Apple, your RC545 is not listed so running the Software Update will not provide you with a driver for this printer. So if Epson does not have a driver for 10.6, and it appears that Apple does not provide one, then what you have already from the previous installation is it. And if this doesn't work, then you may have to look at either an alternate driver or getting another printer. But let's wait and see what happens after the reset.

  • Possible fix for HP Printers under Snow Leopard

    1. Install GPL Ghostscript from gplgs-8.64so-ub.dmg
    2. Install Foomatic-RIP.pkg from foomatic-rip-4.0.2.211.dmg
    3. Install hpijs.pkg from hpijs-3.9.2-ub.dmg
    4. Add printer in System Preferences. Choose "HP Deskjet 4200 Foomatic/hpijs" from driver list.
Above files can be found at http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs
I had the same problems with an HP Deskjet D4260 printer under 10.6 as many did here with various HP printers. The above worked quite well for me. The list of supported printers is quite large, and is on the above linked site with the downloads. I read that the order matters, inasmuch as you want to do Ghostscript and Foomatic first, before the hpijs.pkg. At any rate, that is how I did it, and it worked quite well.
I hope this helps those with printing woes under Snow Leopard

    Hi Kristy
It sounds as though you have solved your problem but I have found a way to fully access floppy disks formatted as Mac OS Standard. This may not work for all though because I have access to a Windows 7 PC.
On my mid-2011 iMac running OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion) I was trying to download and copy onto floppy disks (for an old Macintosh) some software downloaded from the internet.
I found, as you did, that I could read such disks via a USB floppy disk drive, but that I could not write to them.
Thanks to your post I realised that it was simply because such formats have only limited support in more recent versions of OS X.
There is software called MacDisk for Windows. I just ran it in Windows 7 running as my Bootcamp partition accessed via VMWare Fusion. The software is free to test (with some limitations).
I just successfully copied a file via it to a disk and then was able to read it on my iMac.
Hope this helps you, or anyone else looking to do such strange things.

  • A fix for screensavers that don't work with Snow Leopard?

is there a fix for the screensavers that no longer work with Snow Leopard? some of the developers have came out with new versions, but a few of them have been abandoned by their authors. Is there a way to run those screensavers in 32 bit mode?

Is there a way to run those screensavers in 32 bit mode?
Not without action by the original authors, sorry.
I know it doesn't help right now, but like all other OSs in the past, these types of things need to catch up since the bar has been raised once again...give it time and there will tons of entertaining s'savers out to pick from.

  • Bash update for Lion install correctly?

I can't tell if the Bash update for Lion installed correctly.  It shows up twice on my desktop and is under devices in finder. It went though all the questions, agreeing and where to install.  I have a Mac mini from early 2009. Running 10.7.5 version of Lion.

There should be an icon on the Desktop that looks like an external hard drive and is named "bash Update" or something like that. Drag it to the Trash. If you don't see it there, look in the sidebar of a Finder window under DEVICES and click the eject icon. Then look in the Downloads folder for a file with a similar name and drag it to the Trash.

  • Spaces and Exposé in Lion vs. Snow Leopard

There is a problem with Lion's Spaces feature (now part of Mission Control). Here are the steps to reproduce the problem:
    1. Let's say you have multiple Safari windows open in Space #1, and you also have multiple Safari windows open in Space #2.
    2. While you are using Safari in Space #1, if you use Exposé (now part of Mission Control) to show you "Application Windows", Exposé will incorrectly show you *ALL SAFARI WINDOWS ACROSS ALL SPACES*, not just the space that you're working in.
This makes it impossible to keep our Spaces distinct from one another, because they end up all "blurring together" once we try to use Exposé.
In Snow Leopard, whenever you used Exposé to show you "Application Windows", it only showed you Application Windows from the CURRENT SPACE THAT YOU WERE WORKING IN.
But now, in Lion, it shows you ALL WINDOWS from that application ACROSS ALL SPACES on your entire computer.
Is there any way to get this feature to work the way it used to work in Snow Leopard?

I haven't tried this, in fact I gave up on TM totally, but looks like you can set it using the Terminal, not sure if you can set it for a week's worth of seconds though...
    http://www.trickyways.com/2010/04/how-to-change-time-machine-backup-interval-on- mac-os-x/
Might be better to have iCal execute a Script once a week that turns TM ON & Off...
The first thing to know is that pretty much everything you do in Time Machine is going to require elevated privileges. So if you are writing a script, it should run as such, or if you’re running each command independently you will likely need to prefix them with sudo. Let’s start with a computer that doesn’t have Time Machine enabled. To enable it, use tmutil along with the enable verb:
    tmutil enable
To disable Time Machine, use the disable verb:
    tmutil disable
This is the equivalent of sliding the Time Machine slider between the ON and OFF positions.

  • When will there be fix for AirPrint in Yosemite? I cannot use my HP printer. I have uninstalled/resinstalled everything you can think of. I have deleted and added my printer more time than I can count. I have checked for updates. Nothing has worked.

When will there be fix for AirPrint? Since upgrading to Yosemite I cannot print from my MacBook Air which I use mostly. (I can print from the my old 2005 G5 desktop and iPad2 just fine on the same network.) I could print just fine when I had Mavericks. I have tried EVERYTHING under the sun: resetting print system, deleting and adding the printer, checking for updates, uninstalling and reinstalling printer software and folders, turning off modem, router etc. NOTHING works.
The laptop shows that it is printing but nothing happens. Then it says it cannot locate the printer or there is a broken pipe. But it does tell me that I have a low level in one of the ink cartridges (which is true.)
Help! I have warned everyone I know not to upgrade. Is there a way to go back to Mavericks?
