Will the current iMac with two Thunderbolt ports support up to 12 devices (6 per port) or just 6 total?

If will handle 7 devices total, you will use one thunderbolt port as an upstream and the other as a downstream.
Take a look at this link, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbolt_(interface)

Yes it will play games just fine. Per the Terms of Use we cannot discuss future products on this forum.
You would only need antivirus software if you run MS Windows and only for the Windows partition. Because there are no viruses for OS X it's unnecessary for OS X. The good news is even if your MS Windows partition becomes totally diseased this will in no way affect OS X.

  • Will the current gen iMacs be enough, or should I wait?

    Hello,
My Mom wants to get a new computer, and she's been eyeing the iMac for sometime now. Since we're buying a MacBook for college, I thought I'd buy my Mom an iMac.
Personally, I would wait, because I want the lastest and greastest in my computer, but I'm not sure if my mom is the same way. She only goes on the computer once in a while to check Facebook, Youtube and do her banking. She is also big on music, so she'll most likely want to play it on her iMac.
My question is: Will the current gen iMac be good enough to last a minimum 5 years?
My mom will be doing the following:
    YouTube (HD video streaming)
    Facebook
    Online Banking
    Music downloads (legally of course)
And Music streaming (Playing it on her iMac, so she can hear it in the living room, kitchener, where ever she is)
And she will be putting music on her MP3 player, which is a Coby 8GB I believe
    These are her requirments:
She will not spend any money on repairs for atleast 3 years. It must stand up to everything the dust can throw at it.
She needs it to be quick. Her current laptop (HP Pavilion 17 Inch) actually takes 15 mintues to open a simple email client! She wants a machine that will be quick today, and quick tomorrow, and the next day until I buy her a new computer (more then likely in 2015 when my schooling is finished).
She needs it to have good speakers! She judges the quality of the computer by the speakers.
I want to tell her to wait until October for the new iMacs, but I can't! I know she won't buy the new ones because they won't be discounted $100! (I get $100 off every computer as a student in Future Shop). She will buy one now, because she's already buying my Macbook and my sister's PC, so shes motovated to fork over another $1099 because she knows she needs a new computer, but if she waits, the motovation will be gone!
Will the current gen base model iMac be able to handle her needs?
    Thank you

Your asking a tall order for people to give you a recommendation.
    Here's my take.
The baseline iMac, from a computing standpoint will meet your mother's needs.
My advice, you'll need to install more than the baseline 4 GBs of RAM.
Plan on spending extra to buy third party RAM. Install, at least another 4 GBs of RAM for a total of 8 GBs.
The current OS X version will run better and run additional applications better with more RAM added after purchase.
Purchase this RAM from either of these two sources.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac
    OR
    http://www.crucial.com
With this addiitional RAM installed, you'll already be ready when newer OS X updates happen.
The iMac's internal speakers were never the greatest.
They are a little better than laptop speakers, but not by much.
Judging the quality of a computer by its speakers is like judging the quality of a car by its hubcaps.
Tell your Mom that Macs are not PCs. There are a lot less issues with Macs than with Windows PCs.
Macs are more than the some of their individual components. And Apple Macs have much better computer components that what is found in a typical PC.
I doubt they will be strong enough, by themselves to play and hear music from all over the home.
My advice, by a seperate set of powered external speakers that an be plugged into the iMac, or by a portable speaker system that works over wireless Bluetooth/AirPlay that can be easily moved from room to room or is big or strong/loud enough to be put in a central location in your house so that your iMac can stay where it is and transmit signals to a wireless speaker system that is able to play music louder from around the home.

I would like to buy an iPhone for my friend in Iceland.  Two questions: will the phone work with complete utility in Iceland, and if so, what should I do to confirgure it while in the USA so that it can have full utility in Iceland?

Bad idea. There are no supported iPhone carriers in Iceland, thus some features may or may not work. Further, there will be no warranty or support for a US purchased iPhone in Iceland...your friend will be on their own. If you still want to go down this road, make sure you purchase an officially unlocked iPhone(GSM model) directly from Apple.

  • Will the current plugins for Sigma DP1/2 RAW files work with files from the DP1/2 Merrill cameras? A

Will the current plugins for Sigma DP1/2 RAW files work with files from the DP1/2 Merrill cameras? And if not, is Adobe developing plugins for these cameras?

Not sure what plugins you mean, Hornet - Lr doesn't rely on plugins to read new cameras.
If you mean the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) plugin - that's for Photoshop, not Lightroom. Lr has the same functionality as ACR, but it's hard-coded into the program, so if you're looking for support for a new camera, you need to wait for a new version of Lr.
And nobody here can say when Lr support for a given camera will happen.
Hopefully someone with a Merrill will be able to chime in about whether its files work with the current Lr.

  • How do we sync contacts and calendars (ONLY) between two iCloud accounts, two iPhones and one iMac with two user accounts?

This is complex.  Until today we had one iMac with two user accounts - one for me and the other for my wife.  We sync'd our calendars and contacts between our two user accounts using my iCloud account, thereby keeping our schedules coordinated and our contacts information always the same between us.  Also, as I had an iPhone, I sync'd my phone with my iCloud account, thereby keeping the contacts and calendars in the two user accounts on the iMac AND my iPhone sync'd.  (I also sync'd other things, like Notes and Mail and Safari settings, between my iPhone and my user account on the iMac, but my wife did not want to be burdened with all my emails showing up in her email account and I wasn't interested in hers, etc., so we didn't sync anything between us other than calendars and contacts.)
We've finally bought my wife an iPhone and set up an iCloud account for her.  And of course she now wants to sync several items from HER account on our iMac to HER iPhone, but I don't want them, just as she doesn't want all of my other stuff.  But we still want our mutual calendars and contacts to sync to HER new iPhone, just like they already do to mine.  But I can't figure out how to CHANGE her iMac user account from using MY iCloud account on the iMac to using HER new iCloud account, and then having HER iCloud account speak to MY iCloud account but share JUST our calendars and contacts.
Originally I tried a workaround by simply having her iPhone log into my iCloud account.  That works great for the calendars and the contacts.  But...she can't sync anything else from her iMac account to her new iPhone because she's presently "forced" to use my iCloud account.  And neither of us want to sync our other things to each other's iMac accounts or iPhones.  Also as we're both using my iCloud account, in things like the Find My iPhone app, the Cloud is seeking two phones labeled with my name and none with her's.  So we definitely don't want this as the set-up and communications network between our devices.
We want to set up our users on the iMac to sync to our SEPARATE AND DIFFERENT iCloud accounts and then have those iCloud accounts sync calendars and contacts (ONLY) between themselves, and then push that data to our separate iPhones (or the other way, from either of our iPhones to the individual accounts on our iMac and the other person's iPhone).  Does this description make sense to you?  I've diagramed it nicely using Keynote, but even thiough I can draw it, I can't figure out how to set up and configure all the devices to make it work.  If you would like me to send the Keynote slides (just two of them - the current and desired configurations - please send your email address to me at [email protected] and I'll be happy to forward it to you.
If anyone can help me set this up I'd be most appreciative!  Thanks so much.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all readers in this community!

    BobT.
I had the same problem, and decided to look into it last night.
First of all, the solution I would like to have is for Apple to allow for selection of iCloud accounts per application, i.e. Contacts to one, Photo Stream to another. I believe this would be the most straight forward solution for the problem we are facing.
Since this is not an option I came up with a workaround. I was most interested in solving this for Contacts, so this is what I tested for. Now I have all 3 devices with the same contacts.
    1) Turn off iCloud for Contacts on all devices. On the device that has the Contacts list that you would like to propagate to all others select to keep the contacts, and on the others select not to keep them.
Note that the current backups still exist on iCloud, so in case something goes wrong you can still turn the iCloud for Contacts back on to get your current Contacts back.
    2) In iTunes, sync All Contacts with the phones, starting with the one with the Contacts content you chose to keep.
From this point on, the 3 devices should sync contacts with each other.
This, of course, will stop your iCloud backups of Contacts, but I don't think this is really needed. You are already storing copies of your Conacts on 3 devices, which for good parts of the day are likely not all co-located. You also potentially have Time Machine backups turned on, which would mean there is a 4th copy there as well. For the case of Contacts iCloud only complicates matter ... that is until Apple implements the solution I first wrote about.

  • 5k imac with two 4k displays?

Can anyone confirm that you can use two 4k monitors with a 5k imac? I know it has two thunderbolt monitors but people have told me it can only support one 4k monitor due to the processing power of the CPU and Graphics Card. Essentially im trying to have a mac with 3 high resolution displays. I dont know if its possible yet because of hardware limitations. I was thinking about doing a 5k imac with two 4k displays or a mac pro with three 4k displays Or if neither are possible, I'd just go with a 5k imac and the 5k dell monitor if the iMac could only support one monitor. Thank you if anyone can answer this because I know its a niche question thats not really speci

I have this exact same question.
Just a side note: I own a 5k iMac with a 4k display connected and when I try to add my 4k tv it will not work as a third screen. Bear in mind that is via an hdmi-mdp and I have not tried connecting another monitor via dp.

  • Share calendar on two Ipads (one Imac with two users)

    Hi community,
I'm looking for some help and where to look for if not here. Let me quickly describe my setup at home and what I try to achieve.
My partner and I have both their own iPad and iPhone. There is one iMac where we live. We are using it together but each of us has it's own user account on it and therefore it's own Itunes library. Both of us are using the iCal calendar on the iMac which we sync with our iPad and iPhone.
So there is one iMac with two users on it. Each user syncs his iCal with his iPad and his iPhone. What we would like to achieve though is that we can cross-share our iCal calendar. So that my partner can see my calendar items on her iPad and iPhone and vice versa.
We do not have a google mail (calendar) account nor are we using iCloud.
Every help is very much appreciated.

    Dear Dah,
I now have two iPads, which I also (need to) have separate AppleID's for. I understand I can share apps between them if I authorize iTunes on my iMac with both ID's, but I am not quite sure about the correct way to do that. I already have the iMac authorized for AppleID#1. If I go into iTunes and click on Store/Authorize this Computer... and enter my AppleID#2 information into Account name and Password boxes, does this authorize my iMac's iTunes for BOTH ID's or does it just change the authorization from ID#1 to ID#2?
If the former is correct, I understand the way to proceed is to xync up both iPads to iTunes and then I can drag and drop apps from one iPad's library listings to the other, right?
If this is not the correct way to get dual authorizations, what is?
    Thanks!

The apple coloured ball keeps appearing in photo elements 13 but not in any other programme including premier elements and organiser. I have the latest IMac  with ample storage and ram

I believe I have solved the problem.  I have 16mb ram so I went into photo

I also reduced the cache from 6 to 2.  The last two sessions the coloured

What is the difference between the Intel HD Graphics 5000 and the Intel Iris Pro Graphics in  the current iMacs?

I am assuming you are talking about PPC Macs? Those haven't been manufactured or sold in years (since early 2006 I believe) when Apple started using Intel processors. There are still some apps which run on PPC code only which makes them incompatible with the last three Mac operating systems.
There are different Applecare products depending on which Mac product you buy, although the coverage is about the same (except for iOS devices).
