Will the engineer move my master socket while inst...

I'm planning on hopping onboard with Infinity when my exchange goes live in a few weeks. I live in a new(ish) house, and my master socket is placed in a terrible location half way up the wall in the middle of the hallway. I understand that you need to have the VDSL modem connected to the master socket, but it would be extremely inconvenient to have a modem and router sitting on the floor in the hall. What I would like to know is whether the engineer would wire the master socket through to an extension instead. Possibly an extension upstairs, where my PC and consoles are. My house is wired up with standard good quality CW1308 cabling in the walls, so interference shouldn't really be an issue. I really don't want a 30m extension cable stapled down my walls and around the door frames if there's any way to avoid it.
Here's the master socket (one on the right that was installed as a second line a few years ago):

Here's the extension upstairs that I'd like Infinity faceplate installed to:
http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee486/WWB01/Photo0134.jpg

By the look of it, your wiring is in good condition and has the necessary multiple cores.
If it is, the engineer will make the upstairs socket into the Master and the current Master will become an extension. This has been done on quite a few Infinity installations that I have seen and something similar was done to mine. Its an easy option for the engineer so they will normally do it that way rather than opt to run extra wires.
Have choccie biscuits and tea/coffee on offer for the engineer . . . works miracles!

    Hello ,
    I am new in Sharepoint development . I am trying to create a Sharepoint feature to Activate master page automatically while creating the site .Below mentioned code I am using to do this .
    But When I am creating any site under site collection .It is not applying automatically . I have to manually Activate that feature .
    SPSite site = properties.Feature.Parent as SPSite;
    SPWeb rootWeb = site.RootWeb;
    Uri masterUri = new Uri(rootWeb.Url + "/_catalogs/masterpage/mycustom.master");
    rootWeb.MasterUrl = masterUri.AbsolutePath;
    rootWeb.CustomMasterUrl = masterUri.AbsolutePath;
    rootWeb.Update();
    How Can I create a feature that can activate the master page at same time of site creation under Site collection ,Without any manual work ..
    Thanks in Advance ..

    Hi,
    You can associate master page during feature activation as follows:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/19933.sharepoint-2010-set-a-custom-master-page-during-feature-activation.aspx
    Then, you can use feature stapling to apply automatically on site creation:

  • I am new to Mac and am wondering if I make an Album in iPhoto  by moving similar events that have been dated into the album will they just merge or will the events move into the album and keep their date

    I am new to the MacBook Pro and am wondering if I make an Album in iPhoto by using events that have titles and dates will I loose the titles and dates??I had hoped to combine my ie. 2010 Trip pictures  Grandchildren pictures etc but do not want to lose the dating of them.
    What advice does anyone out there have for a program to add text to the pictures. I have been using Paint Shop on my PC but want to switch totally to the MAC
    Thank you

    1 - iPhoto is a database and there is a learning curve - it  is all about photos and nothing about files - under teh help menu ==> iPhoto help watch the movies - that will help get you started more smoothly
    2 - there never is a reason to go directly into the iPhoto library - do not do it (inclusing via the all images display in teh finder) - doing so can cause loss of data and photos
    3 - preview or a third party editor can add text to photos
    4 - events are very basic automatic automatic things and generallly it is best to leave them as buckets of photos and organize via albums and folders - and using keywords, faces and places and smart albums
    5 - dates are part of the metadate stored in the EXIF fields of the photo - moving a photo will not affect that (but note that file managers like the finder do not look at the photo metadate - they look at teh file metadate which is seperate

  • I have a monthly cap on my home data plan. Will the time capsule use it up while backing up my devices?

    Logically it won't but I am not sure. Couple more questions:
    - If I have the appropriate power cable for the country, will this device work at 220V/50Hz right out of the box?
    - Can I use time capsule as a Wi-fi hard-drive with Windows PC?
    Thanks so much, and please be gentle with your replies, I may not be as educated as you are.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    1. The AirPort Time Capsule doesn't use Internet when you are backing up. The computer only connects to it to copy your files to the hard drive.
    2. As you can see in specs, the AirPort Time Capsule works with the specs you said.
    3. Of course. The AirPort Time Capsule shows the hard drive as a network drive on all your computers you connect to it. In the case of a PC, you will be able to access to the hard disk from the Windows Explorer

  • BT Infinity and the Master Socket - will they / wo...

    It seems that they won't. Well not unless you pay. Like many others posting on this forum, I was seduced by Infinity, but then confused by the requirements of installation in respect of the utilisation of the master socket and subsequent location of equipment. My house is typical of the problem - master socket downstairs front of house - wanted equipment sited upstairs back of house. Didn't want an extension draped around the place. I needed to know: 1. Can the master socket be moved? 2. If it can be, is this part of the istallation? 3. If it is not part of the standard installation is there a cost associated with it? 4. What is the cost? Sounds straightforward - it wasn't. I won't bore you with the frustrations of BT customer services, these are well documented elsewhere on the forum. Suffice to say, I have decided not to go ahead with my order. Not because of the content of the eventual reply, but because these frustrations. Anyway, I did eventually get a response by using the complaints route - as BT seen unwilling to share this information, I have. Hope it helps. RESPONSE FROM BT COMPLAINTS DEPARTMENT: The power needs to be plugged into the master socket so that the engineer can plug in your new Hub and Openreach fibre modem. If you haven't, no problem. Your engineer can run an Ethernet extension cable (up to 30 metres long) from where you can plug in your Hub and Openreach fibre modem back to your phone master socket. This extension can only go along walls - not under carpets or floors. If this is not suitable we can arrange a shift to be done, to move your master socket to a position of your choice. This would involve a one-off cost of £130.00. So there you have it.

    @john46
    'the engineer can convert an existing extension into a master for free or run a data extension also  free'
    Depends on the type of cable really, if its 'phone wire', you know those thin strands of copper coated steel then that would kill the broadband.
    Also most peoples extensions are the untwisted 10, 15, 25, etc metres reels you can buy from a supermarket, again not ideal for ADSL Broadband, let alone FTTC.

  • Which phone socket will the BT engineer upgrade?

    I have two phone sockets in my house one is an extension which connects to the router. Will the engineer upgrade the one which connects to the router or the one which connects to the socket that connects to the router?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    HE can convert either one you want. My main socket is downstairs but I had my upstairs socket made to the master socket with the VDSL front plate.

  • Getting a new Openreach Master Socket during the i...

    I have an old style master socket which means I can't use the broadband accelerator.  Can someone advise me whether the newer Openreach type master socket can be fitted at the same time as BT Infinity is installed, as I don't want to pay for 2 visits!
    Thanks

    Hi
        The OR engineer will be able to change you old master socket to a new version one.  Your new socket should end up looking like the one in this picture.

  • Master Socket Issue

    Would like to take up option of Infinity now it's available in my area, anything has to be an improvement on my current BT rate of 2 Meg.
    However the current master socket is in the hall and I want everything in the living room where it is now. I have read about the Master sockets issues and rang the Sales line last night and asked about moving the master socket.
    The operatives initial reaction was effectively "what's your problem have the modem and hub in your hall" - I don't want that , I don't have the space. The next solution is the data extension kit - again I don't want a lead running round 3 door frames to get to my living room. After putting me on hold for a while he came back with the princely sum of £205 to move my master socket. I asked him whether there was any possible movement on price - No.
    Anybody else hit this wall - I am pretty aggrieved having been loyal to BT Internet for many years, £205 is a joke.

    Do you have any phone extensions from your master socket that run into the room you want the modem?
    If so, then just tell the Engineer and he will move it for you, they don't charge, well didn't when I had Infinity installed.
    If I helped, then consider clicking the star to the left

  • Broadband speed / lack of master socket

    My broadband speed according to all the speed tests is around 0.5Mb/s - sad, I know.   One of the things I wanted to try to bump it up a bit was to plug the router into the master socket.  It looks like we don't have one but one of those old junction box things above the front door.  Has anyone had any luck trying to persuade BT to replace a junction box with a normal master socket?  All advice welcome.

    That thing above your door will just be a block terminal, they have them in place because the external cable can not extend inside your premises for more than two metres. This is because the plastic sheathing on it releases chemicals when burns, but to be honest if your house is on fire there are probably 101 other plastic household items that will also release harmful fumes on top of the already harmful fumes from the fire itself.
    By the sounds of you will just have a LJU for your NTP, aka master socket. Will probably have the old T logo on it?
    Anyway, as mentioned above you can't just ask they come and replace it. Openreach operate a 'if it ain't broke don't fix it policy' so if you called an engineer out they will charge you £130 for a wasted visit as it will have been right when tested. Depending on the engineer, he may replace it while on site but chances are he might not as it will be an easy close for him and he can get to his next job.

  • DIY Master Socket relocation clarification - is it...

    Hey Guys,
    Could someone please clarify for me the legalities of moving a master socket... I work mainly in IT but a large part in my current role is switchboard maintanance which usually means running of cables etc for those companies that have yet to discover the joys of VOIP etc. As such i have all the tools, supplies and experience to run a new drop line and box from the external junction (if there is one) as i do it on private systems.
    i have had need many times to move a master socket or have been asked my friends of friends if i could move one but have always believed that it was a huge no no... usually i ended up telling them to contact BT or ran an extension from it to serve the purpose. however there are times when there is a need to move one such as knocking down / moving partition walls etc and i've read a few posts on here which suggest its not such a problem now.. although understandably if i screw up and openreach need to come out and make repairs i might aswell give them my wallet and access to my bank accounts
    Could anyone clarify for me ?
    Many thanks in advance
    Mark

    Everything up to and including the master socket is the property of the BT Group plc and it is within the terms and conditions of all telephone/broadband service providers that end users take care of any network equipment within the boundary of their property.
    You are not allowed to move or tamper with it, obviously no one can stop you but if you damage it and need an Openreach engineer to come out and fix it they will charge your SP, whether they then pass that charge onto you or not depends on what terms and conditions you have with your SP.
    Also if you move it and it still works afterwards don't go thinking your in the clear, even if an engineer has to visit in 1 or 2 years time and can see none standard Openreach equipment has been used, i.e. a none Openreach or older BT Branded NTE has been fitted or the wrong kind of crimps or cabling then he/she will replace them and charge for the visit, regardless of whether that was the cause of the fault or not.

  • BT Infinity 2 and Master Socket.

    Hello all. We ordered our BT infinity 2 and telephone line and they said the engineer will be coming on the 13th to set things up. After looking through the installation of BT infinity I found out that it has to be connected to a master socket. This is my problem.
    My master socket is located right next to my main door and there is an extention socket in my bedroom. Can I have the master socket moved during installation ? Having a bt hub where you keep your shoes looks odd. Will the engineer relocate the master socket or change the extention socket into a a master socket or I shouldn't be expecting anything ?

    Reading through some of the posts, a lot of the installation depends on whether you get a decent engineer, luckily I did.
    My master socket was in a downstairs room and my study / office is in the room right above it. I explained to the engineer what I wanted / needed. He was a bit hesitant as he said it meant him having to drill through an external wall, No it won't as I already have a hole that talkes an extension from the master to the study, right easy he says he could convert the extension to the master and make the old master socket the extension. Great, cup of tea and a few hob nobs later job done.
    If the engineer can not do what mine did he should fit a 30m extension lead to the master socket and you can plug the hoem hub to this, my understanding is that the extension cable is pinned to skirting or wall they will not lay kit under carpet.
    Good luck

  • Can a faulty master socket cause linkdead / dropou...

    I'm connecting to a Dark Age of Camelot server in the US (206.112.64.6) on BT Infiinity and my accounts are going linkdead every 3-5 minutes (when local game client loses connection with the server). This has been happening since I noticed that the cable to our master socket is threadbare and thee are individual wires poking out of the back of the socket (which is not attached to the wall).
    Last time i had this problem, it was a routing issue between me and the server which BT was responsible for causing, but that was 8 months ago.
    What can I do to remedy this. Below is a trace to the destination server. Web browing seems unaffected, as is Skype and Ventrillo (VOIP)

    I'm not decorating my house in lead emulsion No problems with wireless connectivity since the week-long problem that BT caused back in March or whenever it was and since them my connections been solid. Like I said, it doesnt affect VOIP connections (I game while using Ventrilo) which may or may not be less sensetive to a temporary loss of connectivity.
    if BT want to move my socket somewhere more appropriate then fine. Not many people people i'd imaging have a computer in the front hallway of their house, next to the front door. besides, what's the point of providing a wireless router if not for convenience
    Either its a BT socket problem (inside the box are 2-3 loose wires not connected to anything) or its a wider network problem between me and the server.

  • Current master socket in an adjacent room to study...

    I'm moving house next week, with BT Infinity on order.
    My master socket is in the adjacent room to where I'd like it to be.  I understand the installation comes with a 30m extension kit if needed, but will the engineer be happy drilling between rooms, or do I need to do this before arrival, and if so, do I need to pre-lay cat 5/6?

    PROBLEM SOLVED!
    EDIT:  Comments and pictures removed as requested by BT mods.  How come I can discuss this but not allow to post pictures or discuss this any fruther???
    After some investigation and more twiddling with trail and error.  I found out that the cause of the connection was down to a loose master socket
     From the image above, you can see I've moved the whole front facial to get access to the socket at the wall.  The lighter shaded part was quite loose and I suspected when I put the NTE2000 in, it push the master socket back and did not make a full connection.  To over come this I wedge some hard plasic behind it and put the whole unit back together.  Of course I tested this in between with my modem but as you can see below the 3rd light to the right - we have the internet!
    Now the next problem, did a speed test and i'm hitting 3.5mb instead of the 7mb I was hoping with this adapter.  I connected the brown (orange - socket 2) wire in to see if that made a differance but is that what's effect my speed.

  • "Master socket or lack of"

    Ok trying to trce the phone lines
    black drop line comes into the house via a door frame somewhere near the bottom of the door frame on the iside a white cable exits and on the end of this after a pass under the floor the cable ends at what looks like a BT master - single piece like an extension , cap inside and BT trumpeter logo however nothing its connected to it. My partner seems to think there is an old GPO box in the door frame!
    there is an extension box on the oter side of the wall from the incoming wire which has a further extension bodged into it and on the end is the BT home hub and Vision box the phone works off the home hub
    is it worth getting an eingineer in to sort it out a the master has clearly been stuck on a patched wire and the whole thing has been bodged and patched by previous occupant
    Broadband is down to 1.something to a max of 3Kbps as for phone we dont have any hard wired phones to check the line.
    are we liable for any charges for getting it sorted or likley to be fined for the messing about with the drop wire?

    OK further investigation black drop wire goes into the door frame and caught in behind the standard for the door is a small white junction box, from that emerges 2 white  wires, one presumably goes to the small single piece master socket, the other goes to what looks like a cheap DIY shed extension box from which comes a further extension under the floors to where the BThub is plugged, As the hub hasnt been attached to a "master" (the extension has no capacitor or anything in it) will this be contributing to the braodband speed drop off and vision not working.
    As i said in OP no phones connected to the sockets so cant really test the line with a handset.
    whats the best way to configure the set up for best quality
    Hi
    The socket that you think is the master is it possible for you to plug the Home hub into that? ensure that there is nothing else plugged into the other sockets, goto www.speedtester.bt.com and run a speed test.
    I know you say that you do not have a corded phone to test the line but to ensure that you do not have a noisy line which (would cause speed issues) can you not beg/steal or borrow one?

  • IPlate/Master Socket, Help Needed!

    (Before i start this is my first post so  sorry if i mess something up )
    Hi,
    I want to install a BT Iplate but i have a Master socket that is not supported. (Pic below)
    Is there any chance i can change my master socket to the one below so i can install an iplate?

    Hi Eaglealex7,
    The newer Openreach BTNTE5 master socket already filters interference from extension sockets. Pre-filtered ADSL/VDSL master sockets also already filters interference from extension sockets.
    if you have a look at this link here it will tell you what Master sockets work with the iplate / Accelerator : http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=25075
    The accelerator/iplate can sometimes cause more issues in some cases. Have a look at removing the BellWire/Ring wire from terminal 3 of your master socket and extension sockets which does the same thing as the accelerator/iplate but sometimes more effective. Link : bellwire removal
