Will the Genius Bar install Snow Leopard and Aperture 3 for me...?

I have an iMac 20" Core 2 Duo with Leopard. RAM is maxed at 3GB. All my data is backed up on a external HDD using Time Machine.
I need upgrade to Snow Leopard in order to get Aperture 3 (which I need in order to read RAW photos from my new camera).
Anyway, ever since I upgraded to Leopard I haven't been thrilled with my iMac's performance (I did the quick upgrade instead of the complete rebuild). So I want to wipe it clean this time and start over with a fresh install of Snow Leopard. The iMac is 3 years old now, so I think it's time for a fresh start.
I'm not comfortable doing this myself. Will the Genius Bar do this for me? I'm happy to buy the Snow Leopard and Aperture upgrades. But will the Genius Bar charge me? Or will they do it for free since I paid them already for the software?
Thanks for your help!

I do not know if they would do that or not; I believe there is a maximum time limit for a Genius Bar appointment and these kinds of installs may take longer than that. And, it is truly easy to do; your performance problems may not have had anything to do with the OS, but possibly some incompatible third party software or some other corruption. So, I'm not trying to change your mind, but if you want to try it yourself, there are a lot of people here who'd be able to walk you through it.
Now, another idea: did you know that iPhoto supports RAW formats? You can find many help articles like this one by going to Apple support and typing iPhoto RAW into the search field:

  • Will The Genius Bar Install Snow Leopard in 2014?

I have an intel-based MacBook Pro from 2009 (I think) that is running 10.5 and I'd like to upgrade to Mavericks.
If I make a genius bar appointment, will the tech there install Snow Leopard for me (I'd pay for Snow Leopard) as opposed to me ordering a disk from Apple?
    Thanks,
    K

Call them and ask, although they may not have the retail media available (and otherwise would only install it for you if part of a hardware repair and if that was the original OS for your machine).  Either way, they will charge you for the media, and if they do it, they will likely charge for time as well.
The disc is only $20 - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard and its not hard to upgrade yourself.  Just make sure, as always, to make a full backup before attempting any system changes.

  • Just installed snow leopard and office for mac - now my computer is running very slow.  Why?

I've recently installed snow leopard and office for mac - now my computer is running very slowly - why?

Which version of office did you install? If its 2008 the early version had some problems and you will want to update the office software to i think it is 12.3.0
If it is 2011 you might want to do the same thing.

  • Since installing Snow Leopard and Lion two weeks ago, my iTunes program opens seemingly at will.  It usually starts playing music, too.  What is causing this?

Since installing Snow Leopard and then Lion on my Intel-based iMac two weeks ago, my iTunes program seems to open at will whenever the computer is on.   It often begins playing music, as well.  What is causing this and how do I make it stop?

There are ways to minimize, mitigate, and help avoid a lot of problems.
    Bootable backups.
Zeroing a drive twice before using, and format it with SL DVD Apple Disk Utility for sure.
Even a clean install should import old apps without having to reauthorize.
If you must do an upgrade, do it from the SL DVD, after repairing the drive and be sure to use the SL version of Alsoft Disk Warrior (4.2).
Wait six months before jumping on a new OS.
10% is still too many. Yes, it is more sensitive to RAM and hard drive errors, doesn't like some controllers; most ext hdd cases; and enough software to make for test-only status. And it only IDs some known incompatible applications, drivers, extensions, etc and does not remove even those always in best manner.
Plus, there are problems with the new Rosetta and the cache files it now uses. So some apps and plug-ins will cause more trouble. Not all are ready. Good reason to hold off for the months it takes.
Other devices act different as far as on/off behavior.
(Migrating from G5s to Mac Pro can cause all kinds of problems, weird behavior, sluggish system, and why anyone that went down that road was strongly recommended to NOT use Migration Assistant for any of their applications, and to ONLY do clean/fresh installs of any apps. If you skipped that day, didn't read the Guide to M.A., or didn't want to do fresh installs then, your system could have been on borrowed time. If you did do clean install of applications, great.
Installing SL can result in a corrupt directory - I think and it "seems" to be happening, but no real proof, just gut feeling and instinct (underlying file system problem? weak sectors that pre-existed waiting to happen?).
Remember all the "there just aren't a lot of 64-bit drivers" for Vista and XP? it's come home to roost.
... my guess is not enough incense and offerings. To hop into TimeMachine and SuperDuper backup images and pull the 1TB for another day (week, month, year).

  • Can I install Snow Leopard and boot from software RAID 1 (mirror)?

I have a Mac Pro (quad core 2.66 GHz) on order for my office workstation. Yeah, I know new ones are probably coming out early next year but due to budget and upcoming projects I need one now. What I'd like to do is replace the pre-installed 640GB drive with two 1 TB drives and mirror them. The 640GB drive will be redeployed to another machine in the office. Can I boot from the Snow Leopard install DVD, go to Disk Utility, setup a RAID 1 with the two drives, install Snow Leopard to the mirror and then boot off the mirror set?
I've searched and found offhand comments to the effect that installing to and booting from a software mirror is OK, but I'd like to know for sure that it's OK. Any experience that you have with such a configuration would be nice to hear.

Yes. But before you do read the following:
    RAID Basics
For basic definitions and discussion of what a RAID is and the different types of RAIDs see RAIDs. Additional discussions plus advantages and disadvantages of RAIDs and different RAID arrays see:
    RAID Tutorial;
RAID Array and Server: Hardware and Service Comparison>.
    Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
    Pros and cons
Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.
For more detailed information on the differences between Software RAID and Hardware RAID you may want to read: Hardware RAID vs. Software RAID: Which Implementation is Best for my Application?

  • I installed snow leopard and now videos on my Xfinity home page won't play

I installed snow leopard and now videos on my Xfinity home page won't play

You may be in the same boat as me.
I deliberately bought a refurb Feb 2011 MacBook Pro, because it would have originally shipped with Snow Leopard. I have to run an application for my job, which does not run under Lion.
Unfortunately, Apple is now upgrading all Snow Leopard machines, before selling them as refurbs. I purchased a legal copy of Snow Leopard, and have tried various downgrade solutions that I found posted on the net, without success. No matter what I do, it always goes into "three beep mode" after trying to install Snow Leopard.
The latest development came this evening, while I was talking to the "geniuses" at Apple. Apparently, there is now a firmware revision that loads the first time you run Software Update under Lion, and it locks the machine so that it can't revert to Snow Leopard.
The only option they have been able to offer me so far, is to return the machine and get a refund. This is maddening, as I HAVE to have a Snow Leopard machine, and can't find any other way to purchase one.

  • I've installed snow leopard and now my MX860 won't scan

I've recently installed snow leopard and now my Canon MX860 won't scan.  I've reinstalled the scan driver from the Canon website.  Any other ideas?

I suggest that you open Print & Fax, select the MX860 under the scanner heading and remove it using the minus button. Then, still in Print & Fax, click the plus button to add the scanner again. The Add Printer browser will appear and with the Default icon selected the MX860 should appear as a printer and a scanner. Select the scanner entry and ensure the Print Using menu changes to Canon MX860 series. Click Add to complete the creation of the new scanner queue. Now test the new scanner by selecting it in the Print & Fax > Scanners list and then pressing Open Scanner.

  • Installed snow leopard and lost 90 percent of Address Book entries

I just installed Snow Leopard and my Address Book now has only a very small percentage of the contacts I had. Is there any way to recover them? I'm ashamed to say I had not backed up this info. Thanks for any help!

The metadata folder has the same number of items as the current address book (68). The other contents of the .../application support/address book file are:
    ABPerson.skIndexInverted
    ABSubscribedPerson.skIndexInverted
    AddressBook-v22.abcddb
    AddressBook.data
    AddressBook.data.previous
    Configuration.plist
    Images folder
    lastImport.plist
    MailRecents-v4.abcdmr
    Metadata folder
Hmmm... Is the "AddressBook.data.previous" relevant here?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Could a 2012 macbook pro from the factory been loaded by the factory with both Snow Leopard AND OSX Lion?

could a 2012 macbook pro from the factory been loaded by the factory with both Snow Leopard AND OSX Lion?

I think MBPs stopped coming with Snow Leopard installed as of the late-2011 models. That's when OS X Lion started being pre-installed on MBPs. Some earlier MBP models (2010, early-2011) had a firmware update to allow Internet Recovery (command+option+r) which would allow a reinstall of OS X Lion (purchased from the App Store) with the purchaser's AppleID/password.
I don't believe SL would even install on a 2012 MBP.
