Will the latest iTunes version nullify operations of older ipods?

My son bought the latest iPod Nano (Gen 7) and found he needs to run the latest iTunes version supported by OS Mountain Lion in order to use it. We are running Mac OS X 10.5.8 (OS X Leopard).
To run the latest, Mountain Lion, will require 2 upgrades on our part. Apparently we have to upgrade to OS X Snow Leopard before we can upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
This is all fine, but my son thought he saw something on an online forum that if we upgrade to Mountain Lion, our older iPods and my other son's iPod Touch ( all purchased within the last 4 or 5 years) might not be able to run/load/sync tunes on the newest iTunes version.
This seems counter-intuitive to me and may be (and probably is) complete bulldust. What's your knowledge of this situation?

My 3rd gen iPod (2003 model), which connects using FireWire instead of USB, still works fine with the latest iTunes.  My 4th gen iPod (2004 model) and 1st gen iPod shuffle (2005 model) also work fine.  I don't have one to try, but I'll bet even the very first iPod from 2001 would work fine.  Everything on the Internet is NOT true...
The iPod nano 7th gen specs
http://www.apple.com/ipod-nano/specs.html
say the Mac System Requirements are "OS X v10.6.8 or later, and iTunes 10.7 or later."  So, technically, it does not require Mountain Lion, and the latest version of iTunes (11) works with Snow Leopard (10.6.8).
So, the minimum paid for upgrade (for you to use a 7th gen nano) would be for Snow Leopard, which is available from the online Apple Store for $20.
NOTE:  If the Mac is a PowerPC Mac, you cannot upgrade it to Snow Leopard (Intel-only).
