Will the new ATI graphics card work on PowerMac G5 Quad?

Hello,
I'm having a problem with my PowerMac G5 Quad, simply the graphics card is at fault. The rest of the machine is in perfect working order. I need a new graphics card and i've searched ebay (UK) and found some products. However, I would like a new graphics card with a little more power.
As I develop code using the OpenCL API on the windows machine, I would like to transfer this process over to my Mac (have to install OpenCL API myself, as Leopard does not have native OpenCL support). More importantly, OpenCL supports selected GPU types i.e. latest GPUs from ATI/Nvidia.
Simply put, would anyone know or have experience installing the newer ATI/NVIDIA generation of Mac Graphic cards on PowerMac G5 Quads and if so, which graphic card (ATI RADEON 4850 etc).
As I think about this, both PowerMac G5 Quad and Mac Pro utilise PCI-E and yes, even though graphics cards are not particularly interchangeable on different architectures (or are they?) I would just like to know if anyone can give me advice or if anyone has had success or failure at such an attempt.
I really cannot afford to buy a Mac Pro machine and there is still many years of life left in my PowerMac G5. I really need your help and advice friends.

Hi-
Welcome to Discussions!
No modern card will work in a G5.
The best that one can do in a PCIe graphics G5 is to use a flashed Geforce 7800 GTX 512MB card.
That card is the pinnacle of GPU power for a G5.
There are no options beyond that.
Here is a full, "short" list of options:

  • What will a new/upgraded graphics card do for my Dual 1Ghz Quicksilver?

In hunting for a new graphics card I see all kinds of specs, features and benchmarks, but before layin' out $$$ for a Radeon 9800 I wonder if anybody can tell me exactly what benefit I'll get? I've seen nothing here or at xlr8yourmac or 2-pop or C|Net telling me what difference I'll actually SEE on my existing monitor simply by installing a new card.
    1) I am not a gamer
    2) I use Photoshop every day
    3) I use iMovie HD a coupla times per week
    4) I use Final Cut Pro 5 once or twice per month
The main thing I want to achieve is a more accurate "preview" of what the images/video will look like on client's TVs or monitors. As it is now, everything looks too dark on my monitor, so I'm over-brightening footage and images, which look washed-out when others view 'em.
I can't afford a new Intel Mac until mid-2009... but money spent today for a new Radeon might be smart for this G4/QS... but NOT if I also have to buy a new monitor. Thoughts? Suggestions?

A new card will give you more speed but won't change the image quality.. If you images are too dark, you may need to calibrate your monitor. It may also be due to different gamma settings for PCs and Macs.

  • Will the new iTunes 11 still work for power users?

I've looked at the available screenshots, and I'm worried.
On the new iTunes page, Apple says, "Simplicity is a beautiful thing" — but I'm not so sure. I don't see any conventional list views, and I'm very worried that in simplifying it, they've sacrificed the control that so many music lovers like myself have come to rely on.
    Here's Apple's info:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/new-itunes/
    Anyone have additional insight?

    Limnos wrote:
    1) iTunes is free software.  As such it isn't targeted at the "power user" nor does Apple have a specific committment to produce a certain style product.
I disagree. Apple has added many, many features to iTunes over the years that target the power user. From smart playlists, to obscure things like ID3 tag version control. Power users features are sprinkled throughout iTunes. And to say that Apple doesn't have a "specific committment to produce a certain style product" is true, but also fairly obvious/meaningless.
    2) iTunes' developments over the past decade have largely been in the marketing facet.  As for basic music playing not much has changed since it was developed from Soundjam.  What has changed a lot is the introduction of the iTunes Store and interfacing with mobile devices.
Basic music playing has changed a LOT. You couldn't even rate your tracks in the beginning.
    3) Apple is a for-profit corporation.   We might like to remember them as the little-computer-that-could taking on the big corporations, but frankly they aren't that anymore.  They have a responsibility to their shareholders to do whatever it takes to maximize profit.  We don't really know what the October iTunes looks like (much) but if they decide to dumb it down so it is easier for people primarily interested in using iPhones to use then from a marketing perspective can't blame them.  We might not like it and might yearn for the the days when Apple really was computers, but those days are gone.
This is simplified to point of meaninglessness. There's an interaction between customers and product design teams. It may not be obvious from the outside, but there's still a give & take. What you're saying is in essence is, "Shut up and accept whatever happens," which is not a rational approach.
    4) If Apple decided iTunes wasn't in their interest they would drop it in a flash.  Where's iDVD?  iDVD was something people were willing to pay for.  They still would, but Apple isn't selling it anymore even though it is clear people in general have not given up on DVDs.
iDVD is not a good comparison, because of the vastly different switching costs. I used iDVD, but was fairly unaffected by its slow demise.

  • Graphic card for a PowerMac G5 quad 2.5ghz

I have a powermac g5 quad 2.5ghz with a 30in cinema display and i am looking to upgrade my graphic card so that i get better resolution out of my monitor. what are some good ones that are fairly inexpensive? I have a Nvidia GeForce 7800GT 256mb right now
    Message was edited by: jrgphotography

    Hi-
Fairly inexpensive? That's a relative consideration.....
All OEM cards support the 30" ACD at 2560 x 1600 native resolution.
Only one of the ports on each card id dual link, with the other limited to 1920 x 1200.
The Geforce 6600 LE is the bottom of the pack, with the 6600 (256 MB) being only slightly better.
The 7800 GT and the Radeon X1900 G5 Edition are about equal in performance, and are two desirable cards for performance graphics.
Both have a dual link DVI for the 30", and both have the necessary horsepower.
I can't find a retail Mac edition of the X1900, but this flashed Radeon X1900 is cheap and has two dual link DVI ports.
But, since you already have a 7800 GT, you only have one real option left. the Geforce 7800 GTX.
    http://www.barefeats.com/mutant4.html
The absolute pinnacle of performance for the PCIe G5 is a flashed Geforce 7800 GTX (512MB).
These cards have 2 dual link DVI ports to support 2 30" ACDs.

I suppose, depending on your usage, a Quadro FX4500 may be an option.
There is a link on my page to help determine if that is a better choice:

  • [SOLVED] Certain programs crash the GUI (ATI graphics card)

    Hi all,
When I start certain programs, the GUI crashes and becomes inreadable. I can't see the text, buttons or anything. It is as if 'bricks' have been moved around.
When I log on to a Virtual Consile, I can restart GDM, login and all is fine, untill I start the certain programs again.
It seems to be these two programs causing the GUI to crash:
LibreOffice (It automatically starts in the document restore mode, after the last crash - which crashes the GUI )
    Keepass
Other programs I can use jsut fine:
    Gimp
    FireFox
    Chromium
    Eclipse
    Rhythmbox
    Banshee
I do not know what causes this, nor where I should start looking. I've skimmed through the error logs, but I do not see anything suspecious.
I'm running arch linux, 64 - bit, and it is fully updated, open source ati drivers.
Where should I start looking, and what might cause this problem?
Thank you in advance for your help.

  • Have the New ATI-Nvidia Cards been tested in KT4V boards yet? Any issues?

Just wondering. I'm thinking about upgrading in a few months for the next-gen games.
    Thanks.

that is not correct. the cpu is built for up to 90°C on die surface, as amd says in it's white papers. to avoid probs, you should keep the temps under 65°C, or better around 60°C. anaything above could be problematic, anything below is nice

that is absolutely correct, the lower the temps, the longer the cpu will live. but  60-65°C will lower the livetime for about 1 year. so the cpu won't live 15, but 14 years, or so....

  • APPLE 30" Cinema Display and ATI Graphics Card compatability

    hi all
I have a 2year old APPLE Dual proc G5 PowerMac 2.0mhz (1.5GB Ram) with an ATI graphics Card which is a ATI Radeon 9600XT 128mb ram.
This currently works well dipslaying via a Apple cinema 23" screen. However i would like to upgrade the screen with an Apple 30" display now. Will the current ATI Graphics card support a 30"display or will i need to replace the card on buying a new monitor..
i was looking at potentially a new ATI X1900Xt card.
any experiences and help please ...
    Thanks Paul

Your existing card will not run the 30" at full resolution. The ATI X1900 XT won't fit because it is not AGP.
The fastest AGP card for your G5 is the ATI Radeon X800 Mac edition
    <http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ATI%20Technologies/100435317/>
It has one DVI dual-link port that will run the 30" display, and one ADC port.

  • I have amodel A1416, will the new iSO7 work on this model

Will the new operating system iSO7 work on my iPad model A1416?

Since the A1416 is a 3rd Generation iPad, yes it will support iOS7. Though some features like AirDrop may not be available.

  • 256mb ati graphics card

I'm thinking of buying the macbook pro with the 256 ATI graphics card, but I'm concerned that this card may not be enough to last me for the next 5 years.  I'm not a big gamer, but I do occationally play Half-Life 2 and Diabo 2, and I'll be getting Diablo 3 when it is released.  I also develop moble apps as a hobbie and plan on using this computer for other software development (but nothing graphically intensive).  Would this card fit that profile, or should I throw down the extra cash and get the ATI 6750 with the additional RAM.

Buy the upgraded hardware.  The graphics can't be upgraded after you buy the computer.

  • Will LR5 benefit of graphic cards acceleration with the new MacPro ?

Will LR5 benefit of graphic cards acceleration with the new MacPro ?

Well, although LR5 is a great improvement of speed, the dev. team should try to work on MF files such as from the Pentax 645D… any speed improvement would be much appreciated, especially with dust removal and masking tools.
My actual configuration is not so bad, but I can't see how to get more speed from it :

    RAM 18 Gb 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM (2x1 + 2x2 + 2x3 + 2x4)

  • Radeon HD 5770 graphics card works perfectly with my MAC Pro 1,1 and Adobe CS6. However, Photoshop CC won't read the card drivers and says I need to reinstall them and disabled 3D funtions as a result. Anyone else with this issue?

Radeon HD 5770 graphics card works perfectly with my MAC Pro 1,1 and Adobe CS6. However, I upgraded to Adobe CC and Photoshop CC disabled some filters and 3D functionality. The preference panel for Performance/Graphics Card in Photoshop CC is greyed out and inaccessible and shows this message -
"Photoshop detected an error in your display driver. Update or reinstall the driver and check Use Graphics Processor to retry."
I still have Photoshop CS6 installed and it still works perfectly. Anyone else with this issue? Is there a driver update for this compatable with my setup?
    OS 10.7.5
    Mac Pro 1,1
    20gb ram
ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Card
    30" Apple Cinema HD display

after going round with this Adobe was able to find the fix....opened the "show content" folder for the application Photoshop CC (control click on the application folder) and navigate to the sniffer file and rename it by putting a tilda ~ in front of the name..." ~sniffer ", close and open PhotoshopCC...and voila, problem solved... Thankyou Adobe support

  • Will the new final cut pro x work with my Final cut pro version 6.0.6 data

will the new final cut pro x work with my Final cut pro version 6.0.6 data

    Thanks Tom.
So I will need  upgrade to FCP 7 first, then convert to an XML file in 6.0.6, then convert to another file that FCP X can read? I have a lot of half done projects that need finishing. Is this process very complex and time consuming?
Maybe I should be approaching this from a different angle. The reason I am asking is that I now need to upgrade to a new Mac book pro and have been told that I cant run final cut pro 6.0.6 on the new models using maverick. Is this true?
