Will the new Crucial PC4000 Ballistix RAM be a good choice for the A64 3400+ system?

good news that crucial released some enthusiast ram with very good pricing compared to OCZ.
http://www.crucial.com/ballistix/
If i get the PC4000 Ballistix ram from crucial, will it provide me with a good 1:1 overclocking on my system? i am worried that if i get the 2.2.2.6 PC3200 Crucial, it will hit a headroom too soon. i want to achieve a 250Mhz X 10 1:1 OC
please advice..thanks

I was looking at that instead of OCZ3700EB CL 3-3-2-8 which is now in short supply but found the attached document which states that the timings for the PC4000 are CL2.5-4-4-8 which may give a performance hit.
http://news.designtechnica.com/article4685.html
I wonder if it would be possible to tighten up the timings to nearer the PC3200 CL2-2-2-6 values at PC3500 speeds.

  • Is unlocked iphone 3gs a good choice for use in the UK with PAYG?

I've never had a smartphone. I'm thinking of buying the unlocked iphone 3gs to use when I'm in the UK 2-3 (months a year). I would be using a pay as you go sim with a little data use included. All I need is the ability to call, text, email, blog, and check facebook. Would this phone be a good choice for me. I'm hearing that there are some problems with battery life on the iphone 4. Does the 3gs have those issues? Also what does the 's' stand for?
    Any helpful info apppreciated.

This is the deal I'm looking at. As you can see it comes with the upated OS. $375. Is already a bit more than I would normally spend on a phone.

    You are a real lifesaver!!!
It worked on the Mac.  Will have to do some searches to find the same on the PC since the same is happening.

  • Will specs on an iMac 24in 2.8ghz be good enough for video prod-Mac Newbie?

Hi guys, I do pretty high end editing in Sony Vegas but wanted to move to Final Cut Pro and Mac workflow. I've been a life time windows user and have been thinking about taking the plunge for about a year now.
I finally just purchased an iMac 24inch. The related specs are the standard 2.8 ghz, 2 GB ram, and ATI radeon 256 mb. It's still in the box. On my way home I kept wondering about the specs especially since I'm new to Mac. On a windows, those specs might not be that great. Will this be good enough for workflow in FCP. I'm going to upgrade the memory in the near future.
I was concerned about the graphics card? Will I see slowness or stuttering while editing with a lot of footage, rendering, etc. Thanks so much! I want to take it out of the box so bad!

It'll be fine for DV and HDV...footage imported from tapeless systems like P2 or XDCAM EX.
The graphics card doesn't come into play much with editing...only certain filters really use the GFX card...otherwise it is not important.
It is limiting in that you are only able to use Firewire drives, and since the computer only has one firewire bus, you might run into issues capturing this footage from firewire cameras...the drive and the camera will be using one firewire bus. But I haven't had too many issues with that...daisy chaining works for most of us.

  • Will Java 3D be a good choice for this game. Screen Shots inside.

My company is deciding what 3D engine to use for a game we are currently designing. It needs to look as good as a game called Mech Commander 2 Here are some screenshots:
    http://www.microsoft.com/brasil/games/mechcommander2/screenshots/06.jpg
    http://aok.heavengames.com/pics/fanstock/mechc2_5.jpg
    http://www.s2.com.br/s2arquivos/361/Imagens/318Image.JPG
Will Java3D be enough for a turn based strategy game with graphics along these lines?? We have looked into the Chrome2 engine and several others but they are very expensive, so that is why we are interested in using Java3D since its free, and our expertise is Java.

Java 3D would be able to replicate those scenes except for the shadows. You would need to find a way to do that yourself. Another part in your decision will be if Java 3D will be able to handle your polygon count and frame rate expectations. That is a tough question to answer without giving it a try. You will also need to consider how to integrate collision detection, collision response, sound, music, user interaction, camera control and a game menu system (all not part of Java 3D). There are Java solutions for many of those.
The buildings, mechs, fence and trees look like they are done with a 3D modeler. Java 3D has several loaders available to to that.
The smoke, flames, etc can done with a particle system like ours (www.indietechnologies.com) or you can build it yourself.
The fog can be done in Java 3D.
There are terrain implementations outside of Java 3D (www.j3d.org) that could provlde variable LOD and you can create the scorch marks, etc on the terrain with multitexturing (part of Java 3D).
There are other options to consider like the JOGL, LWGL, jMonkeyEngine, Xith3D, Agency9 and few others. Some use a scene graph approach, others are more closer to the metal. Have a look at www.javagaming.org.

  • Is this a good choice for a new hard drive for a 13" mid-09 MBP?

1.0TB HGST Travelstar, 5400 RPM. Anyone had any experience w/ HGST? I only use this laptop for school & surfing.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/HGST/0J22413/

I have a couple of those and used them in my MBPs.  They work just fine.  HGST also has a 7200 rpm version which I also have had good results.  That theoretically should afford slightly faster performance.  You cannot go wrong with either one.
    Ciao.

  • Availability of the SAP Discovery System for Enterprise SOA

    Hello Everybody,
will the SAP Discovery System for Enterprise SOA only be avaliable as a appliance as I've read on NetWeaver04s on Discovery System? Will there be a normal installation like a IDES System?
Perhaps a good idea for a quick start would be a peinstalled Linux Based VMWare Image :-).
    Regards
    Gregor

    Hi Gregor,
among the reasons for shipping the Discovery System as an appliance are legal reasons. So as long as there are 3rd party components involved (from SAP perspective) you'd need to be an official distributor for them. Obviously this restriction applies to VMWare Images as well.
An IDES-like installation is facing the challenge of integrating multiple components (that normally have to be installed separately) and their configuration data during the set-up already. This can be done as the example of Rapid Installer shows. But it is certainly more work to accomplish it.
As always: Making a complex system easy to use/set-up requires extended efforts behind the scenes. So it is always necessary to find the trade-off between "time to market" and "plug-and-play". So currently the availability as appliance is a compromise of both.
    Best Regards,

  • Will the new generation 16GB iPad have enough RAM for digital drawing apps?

I am shopping for iPad.  Will the new generation iPad Air or iPad Mini with retina display 16GB have enough memory to run digital drawing apps with stylus?

    As to the how:
    Use one of these:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD821ZM/A/lightning-to-usb-camera-adapter
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD822ZM/A/lightning-to-sd-card-camera-reader?f node=3a
    To do this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4101
Now for the storage and why getting the "largest" iPad you can afford. 16GB is not much, especially when it comes to photos and video. Assuming you have a relatively modern camera, each photo will likely be a minimum of 5 MB. Extrapolate that and 5,000 Photos is already significantly more storage than 16GB, not counting iOS, any apps and other data.

  • OS 10.4.10 incompatibility with Crucial Ballistix RAM?

I have two 1 GB Crucial Ballistix RAM modules in my G5 1.8 Dual processor, in addition to the two 512 MB modules that came with the computer. Everything was working fine until I recently upgraded to OS 10.4.10. At that point, the two 1GB modules were no longer recognized in the system profiler. Crucial said they are aware of this issue, but that they believe it is an OS bug. They are willing to swap out the RAM, but if the OS is the issue that doesn't really help. Has anyone else had any experience with this problem? Any advice on how to proceed? Thanks in advance for your help and interest.

  • Will the new mac mini run FCP X well?

I currently use a mid 2009 17 inch Unibody MacBook Pro (3.06 Ghz intel core 2 duo, 8GB Ram, and upgraded 1TB SSD hardrive) and have experienced some lag when rendering projects while editing in FCP X.  The SSD harddrive upgrade has proved increase of overall performance tremendously.  However, I want more power.
My question is:  Will the new high end mac mini, which was just announced

You'll get less problems if you move your Events and Projects off of the system drive and on to a secondary drive, to start with.  Get a FW800 drive (I've been happy with on-the-go drives from Other World Computing for years), move all Events and Proejcts to it.
Mac Mini?  Only if you get it with 16GB RAM and the Fussion Drive (which no one has really tested for video editing yet, so I'd be cautious.  Better would be the SSD drive internally and a T'bolt drive for your Events and Projects.
But, I've not seen an reliable, verifiable reports about how it holds up to real world editing.  I personally won't touch anything until I see real world benchmarks for video editing specifically.

  • Will the new 3GHz iMac (24") with GeForce 8800 be good for Aperture v2?

    hi all.
I've just seen the specs on the new iMac and I'm interested. I was resigned to buying a Mac Pro but found it difficult to justify the cost because I'm not a professional photographer. the new iMac might be good enough at a much more justifiable cost.
I wonder if anyone has information or opinions regarding the following.
Will the glossy screen be a nuisance? There is stray light in our living room where I use my computer although we do have venetian blinds on both windows. (don't bother suggesting using the computer in another room. this is Hong Kong where space is scarce and expensive.)
Will 3GHz/4GB be significantly faster than my 2GHz/2GB iMac for Aperture operations? (Aperture was not included in Apple's test comparisons)
Will the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS card be beneficial to Aperture use?
Will the FireWire 800 be significantly faster than the FireWire 400? on my iMac, transfers to/from my external SATA disks run at only a dismal 13MB/s rather than the ideal 40MB/s. is it my iMac's limited processor power, or a limiting factor with having only 2GB of RAM and a scad of applications open, or a problem (concerning caching) with Leopard's copying routines?
for future reference, would the Aperture library saved on the internal SATA drive be faster than if it was saved on the external SATA drive connected via FireWire 800?
your input and information would be appreciated (and it's probably going to be a common question).
    sincerely,
    Gregory

    Gregory Rivers wrote:
Will the glossy screen be a nuisance?
My expectation (every workspace is different as are individual perceptions) is that the reflective issues of the iMac's glossy screen would be very tolerable. What many (not all) graphics pros including me find intolerable is the fact that glossy displays add contrast and saturation to images. However many, perhaps most, non-graphics-pros prefer the added contrast and saturation, which is why Apple uses those displays. Each individual must do his/her own side-by-side comparisons and determine personal preference.
Will 3GHz/4GB be significantly faster than my 2GHz/2GB iMac for Aperture operations?
    Yes.
Will the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS card be beneficial to Aperture use?
I believe yes, but that is just a guess since I do not know the card well. Certainly picking an iMac for Aperture usage I would choose the top 24" with the 8800 GS card
Will the FireWire 800 be significantly faster than the FireWire 400?
    Yes.
...for future reference, would the Aperture library saved on the internal SATA drive be faster than if it was saved on the external SATA drive connected via FireWire 800?
Yes. Best IMO will be to have the AP Library on the internal drive but with Referenced Masters on external FW800 drives. The top iMac allows up to 1 TB internal drive size. Since drives slow as they fill, order a large drive and keep it less than half full to optimize operation.
...is it my iMac's limited processor power, or a limiting factor with having only 2GB of RAM and a scad of applications open, or a problem (concerning caching) with Leopard's copying routines?
Pretty much everything impacts AP performance, so the more things you optimize the better. The maximum 4 GB RAM of iMacs, although quite workable, will always be limiting. Good policy is to restart or at least close as many irrelevant applications as necessary prior to an extended Aperture work session.
Steve Weller, builder of the excellent <http://www.bagelturf.com/index.html> Aperture website, discusses speed improvements here:
    <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1273934&tstart=75>
If you ever do run into performance issues, work to dial in on each of the performance tweaks he discusses.
As an aside, I too like the MBP (ideally 17" matte screen) as preferable to the iMac because of the portability. Unfortunately cost may make that an unacceptable choice, but I cannot overstate the huge benefits of portability.
    Good luck!

can the imac 27" mid 2011 take this ram "Corsair 8GB DDR31600MHz" ? will the imac under clock it to the 1333mhz ?

As the others have said, this is a really chancey thing to do...there have been several users on here during the past few weeks with questions about using out-of-spec ram...most had trouble with it.  Macs will sometimes accept higher spec memory, sometimes they will not.  Corsair has been getting some very good comments lately but that is from those using in-spec memory.
Best solution is the correct memory.  And as noonday recommended, Crucial and OWC are very good and stock the correct ram.
