  • Will the new iMac's be able to play encrypted HD content or not?...

    My first post!
I, like most people, am very impressed by the new iMac's, especially the 24" model. I would buy one today if it wasn't for one unanswered question: will the new iMac's be able to play encrypted HD content or not?...
    See the following text:
"Interestingly though, neither Apple nor Nvidia would comment on whether either of the graphics chip options for the 24-inch iMac come with HDCP support enabled, which would make the iMac a viable link in HD video's copy-protected chain. HDCP support is an option for those GPUs, which makes the fact that we couldn't get an answer intriguing."
This worries me. The screen resolution is sufficient for 1080p, but it seems that I may not be able to play encrypted HD content... An upgrade to the GPU at a later date seems difficult (impossible?) too...
    Any comments?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
This is new to me. Where have you heard HD Encrypted content will be provided from? You can buy an Elgato EyeTV Hybrid that will allow you to watch HDTV content (i.e. Freeview HD) when it comes out properly. I thought HDCP was aimed at preventing copying of content from a HD-DVD or Blu-ray disk (I may be mistaken) - and at £550 for the cheapest desktop size drives we are still a long way off seeing one of those drives in Apple's consumer line-up.
The iMac 24" is unique in that it does have a removable graphics card. Whether any replacements ever hit the market is yet to be seen.

  • Can I move the Photoshop Elements 6.0 from an older iMac to a new one?  The new iMac has no drive?

    Jerryt

I share this person's pain.  And was just now about to ask the same question.  So, in effect we're screwed.  I have the disc but without a drive I think E12 and this computer is going to have a very short life in my life.  And for the life of me, why is so darn hard to get questions answered by Adobe?  Good grief...I have 2 books and have saty through enough video "tutorials" to last me for some time!

Contact the local Apple guys. Or keep an eye on the local website.

  • When will the new iMac be released?

when will the new iMac be released?

    No one here knows.
We'll let you know as soon as Apple let's us know.

  • Does the new iMac have a built in super drive

Does the new iMac come with a DVD drive

Forget the Apple external optical drive.
It is the same one they used to install in iMacs.
It is still a cheap unit, not great on longevity, prone to premature failure and it is waay overpriced!

  • Will the new iMac support FCStudio2?

This may be a dumb question, but I did a search on the forums, and they talked about only G4s and G5s.
The Apple web site confuses me; it says "An AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card" is needed, but the iMac has an "ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory."
Does that mean FCStudio2 can be installed only on a G5, where you can install different graphics cards?

Hi, I have had pretty good experiences using the new iMac (2.4GHZ, 20" screen, 2GB memory, ATI 256MB videocard) with FCStudio2. Below details my experience.
Final Cut Pro: works great, everything is pretty smooth and it hasn't failed me yet (most likely you will be limited to working with DV footage however, as you can't add a standalone capture card for HD).
DVD Studio Pro: works great with no problems
Compressor: when I am doing large batch exports, it is noticeably slower than my tower (to the extent that I just do them overnight).
Motion: works fine if you work with files with a small duration; doesn't run as smooth as my tower
    Soundtrack Pro: works great
Color: I've been tinkering with this program. Seems to run fine, but I am no expert in it.
    Hope this helps!

  • Will the new iMac run Motion 3?

I can't really afford to go to the Mac Pro. I am looking at the new iMac (24 inch, 2.8 processor model), and wondering if it will run Motion 3? I know it won't be ideal, but still I hope that it will suffice for a high-end amateur user.
I currently run Motion 2 on a Macbook, which is obviously not ideal, but at least somewhat works.

No, except by running it through Mac OS X Server 10.6 in emulation.

  • Will the new version have capability to allow me to use Fingerprint for username and password entry?

I need to HP SimplePass Identity protection. This use of fingerprint technology allows sign in to websites by swipe of fingerprint and supports multiple users. Firefox supported that technology at one time but dropped support. Will the new version support it again? I quit using Firefox when the support ended and will not use it again until that functionality is restored.

HP Simplepass never stopped working for Firefox. I'm using it on Nightly 31.0a1 and it's working fine. If it does stop working, then it's HP's fault for not pushing an update to their extension.

  • When will the new imacs be in retail stores?

anyone know when the new core 2 duo imacs will be available in the stores?

Good luck getting the Macs you want, in the configuration you want, at the price you want. Configure to order at the Apple Online Store is less expensive than the same configuration in an Apple Store.
To give you an example, the stock 17" Core Duos came with 512 Mb of RAM. You could configure it to order online to 1 Gb RAM for US$100, as your choice of 2 x 512 Mb or 1 x 1 Gb. But if you bought the same Mac in an Apple Store you had to buy a stock 17" with it's 512 Mb RAM, and could only get a 1 Gb RAM module for US$300. So in the end you had 1.5 Gb RAM. If you wanted 2 Gb RAM in the Apple Store it was US$600, plus you also had the 512 Mb for which you had no use. But you could upgrade through the online store to 2 Gb for US$300.
Configure to order is much less expensive.

  • IPhone... will the new iPods have the same music interface (GUI)?

I really like the new iPhone's interface/GUI. I love the way you can view the albums via the art work. Wow! I remember suggesting this to them in this forum and directly a couple of years ago when the color iPod came out. Does anyone know if the 5th gen iPods do this or if there will be a software update for them to do this? This is more revolutionary to me than the phone itself.

They don't? I saw somewhere that they have a very neat search function, but not viewing them via the album art. Since this is available on the iPhone, why do they not implement it in their latest products? I am not speculated but only wanted to know if something that I would like to buy will be worth the upgrade.
Also, I don't understand the 2nd point. I am not allowed to speculate? I don't understand how asking if a current functionality that is in their latest product will be available in their other latest products. If not, then they need to end of life (EOL) the 5th gen video iPod and come out with new ones.
Also, it doesn't make much sense to me that you would hang something out on a pole like carrot in front of a horse and dangle it front of us, the consumers, and not have it available for us, the consumer, to buy it. That really bothers me and frustrates me.

  • Will the new iMac be an upgrade?

I was looking to buy the 2.93GHz iMac with the 4850 graphics card; however, I currently am using a 2005 PowerMac G5 2.7GHz DP. Overall, will this be a significant upgrade? The Intel processor is, of course, a very nice plus.
    Thanks!

As you mentioned, the main advantage of the Intel iMac for you will be software compatibility, especially going forward post Snow Leopard release.
I have a 2.0 GHz iMac Core 2 Duo (the last of the white iMacs) and a 2.0 GHz Power Mac G5 "dual core (the last of the Power Macs). They have comparable graphics hardware, and they perform about the same for day-to-day use, based on my observations through typical use; I did not do any timing or benchmarking. Granted, the current Intel iMacs are a fair bit faster (but I like my little cool-running 17-inch model with a big second display).
So a good plan may be to continue to use your current Power Mac for now. After Snow Leopard is released, when you would have normally upgraded, buy whatever is the latest iMac model with the graphics hardware option you want.

  • Will the new iMac run MSOffice 2004?

I have been running MS Office 2004 for Mac on my Macs since, oh, around 2004.  I'm completely happy with it.  I don't need any new features.  I know it inside and out and I don't want to learn a new version.
Will a brand new iMac run my Office 2004 software?  Or will this software be obsolete on a new machine?

No, except by running it through Mac OS X Server 10.6 in emulation.

  • When will the new imacs be available

Just wondering when these are being released for sale as it is still stating November?!?!?

Note, you likely won't be able to run any older Mac OS than the machine (that's always true when a new Mac gets released).  If what runs on today's current machines is important to you, get a today's machine.  There are no internal optical drives on the new machines.  We are just end users here, and we can't speculate on this forum the exact date, but remember, there are ten days left in November.
