The iPhone 4s uses a Micro SIM and the iPhone 6 uses a Nano SIM. The Nano SIM is smaller and thinner, so you should get a new SIM, but some customers have been able to trim their Micro SIM down and gotten it to work in the newer iPhones. It is a snug fit since it is also thicker, so I would suggest getting a new SIM if you can.

Yes all of the iPhone 5 family use the nano sim, so as long as you did not switch to a phone locked to another network it will work. But you do need to go through the activation/setup procedure with tHat sim.

Resolution
If you encounter either of the above symptoms on your iPhone, follow these steps to attempt to resolve the issue. Test after each step.
1. Toggle airplane mode: Tap Settings > Enable Airplane Mode, wait five seconds, then turn off airplane mode.
2. Turn iPhone off and then on again.
3. Remove the SIM card and verify that it's a valid, carrier-manufactured SIM. Also verify that it isn't damaged, worn, or modified. Then reinsert it.
4. Check for a carrier-settings update. Connect to a Wi-Fi network. Then tap Settings > General > About. If an update is available, iOS will ask you if you want to install it. If Wi-Fi isn't available, connect your device to iTunes.
5. Update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS.
6. Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
7. Restore the iPhone.

I have an existing 2 year verizon wireless plan, really want an iphone 6 and dont mind paying the 650. If i purchase an unlocked iphone 6 from apple online can i just transfer the sim card from my current phone (iphone 5s) to the unlocked iphone 6 and itll work?
Thank you!If you purchase an unlocked phone from Apple, it will cost you $650 and it will only partially work on Verizon's network. So, your better off buying a phone at full retail from Verizon for the same $650. It will function properly and, as all Verizon iPhones are sold with the GSM side unlocked, you'll be able to use it on other networks later.

The phone will "work" with any standard GSM carrier.
However, LTE and iPhone features like FaceTime, iMessage, Visual Voicemail may not work unless you use a carrier that officially supports iPhones. -

If you have a smartphone data plan it wouln't change it. Otherwise it would force you to choose a smartphone plan. But why don't you just call AT&T and ask? And why do you want to use your old SIM? You can just activate the iPhone with its SIM if the phone is new, and if it's used AT&T will give you a new SIM. Either way you will keep the same number.

You can't. The nano SIM is 15% thinner compared to its previous two generations, so even if it is cut in the same size, the thickness would be different, meaning the cut micro SIM cannot fit into the nano SIM slot.
