Will there be a CDMA Curve World Edition

Hello to the new Blackberry forums. Guess I am the first person to post here. Anyway, I noticed that the Curve that is launching for CDMA carriers soon is not a World Edition phone. Does anyone know if there will be one at some point? I would love to get the Curve, but I have to have the International capabilities. Thanks

kewl i did not know that. so if you cant wait then the 8330 is for the win?
im not so good with advice. can i interest you in a sarcastic comment?

I have bought a WD My Book World Edition to use for back-up of my iMac, but when I try and log onto the drive with Apple time Machine (back-up software) or connect in any other way I get the message 'There was a problem connecting to the server "MybookWorld.local" The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Followed the directions on this page and it worked!

Part One - Turn on SSH (in the admin panel)
    [1] Go to to http://mybookworld.local
[2] login: username will be admin, password will be whatever you have setup. If you can't remember it should be in your Mac OS X keychain (Utilities > Keychain Access, search for "mybookworld"). If you have not changed if from the default the password will be admin as well.
    [3] Switch to advanced mode.
[4] From the System tab, pick Advanced.
[5] Enable SSH Access, and click submit.
[6] Click on the network tab and then the LAN button
[7] Make a note of the IP address
Small, maybe obvious, but nevertheless important point: For the install to work, your NAS needs to be connected to a router with internet access.
    Part Two - Install netatalk2.2
    [8] Open Terminal.app (Utilities > Terminal)
[9] Enter the following command (substitute in 127.0.0.1 for the actual IP address you noted down in step 7), then hit return:
    Code:
    ssh [email protected]
[10] When prompted, enter the ssh password (will be welc0me).
[11] You are now going to download the installer. Enter the following command, then hit return:
    Code:
    wget http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/local--files/netatalk2-2-on-whitelight/install_netatalk.sh -O install_netatalk.sh
[12] Once completed, you will need to run the installer. Type:
    Code:
    sh install_netatalk.sh
[13] You will be asked a number of question during install, answer yes to all. When asked about the "DHX2 login process", I opted to install the modified version, so I can confirm it works.
[14] Once the box has restarted, you should be able to connect to your afp shares and continue to use Time Machine.

While this sounds like a good idea, in reality it means now you have to find space for 3 radios and antennas in the same space you typically fit only one (or sometimes two).  And then tie them all together in the software.
The biggest question is if there will actually be a market for this type of device, nothing gets built if it won't sell.  My opinion is the market would be very limited.
I think that manufacturers will wait until LTE is established and working (reliably) on the Verizon network and then design phones with just LTE & GSM radios (no CDMA).  These will be the 'global' phones of the future (at least until the next technology comes out).
I don't think we will ever see a CDMA/LTE/GSM 'universal' phone, there is just not a big enough market for it.  Just my opinion.

  • Rev A on 8830 World Edition?

I am trying to decide on buying a Curve 8330 or a 8830 WE and the deciding factor will be if the 8830 WE can do Rev A or not.  I will be on Verizon and the phone will be from them.  Does the 8830 WE support Rev A now?  If not, will there be some kind of free/cheap firmware upgrade available to do so in the near future?  I've heard that an "upgrade" will be coming out and I don't know if it is true or that if it is true that it will be something that can be easily done to current 8830s.  Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick reply.  The similarity in the Blackberry model numbers is a little confusing.  I am specifically referring to the 8830 World Edition, not the Curve 8330.  Verizon's website says the Curve 8330 will not be Rev A upgradeable (http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedP...) but says nothing about the 8830's Rev A capabilities or lack thereof.  I sent Verizon an email this morning asking the same thing but haven't heard anything back yet.

  • Setting up Time Machine with Snow Leopard and MyBook World Edition II NAS

I have just successfully set up Time Machine on my MyBook World Edition II NAS. It's not so straightforward, and the information on the Western Digital support site is either unhelpful or flat-out wrong, so here's a post that will hopefully save people in a similar position a lot of time and frustration.
    Here are the key facts:
    1. The MyBook World Edition II NAS does support Time Machine -- if you upgrade to at least firmware Release 1.01.14 (9/29/09). See http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=mbworld. Amazingly, the Level I support people at Western Digital told me that Time Machine is not supported! I had to point him to this link.
    2. MyBook World Edition II comes with a built-in user, WD_Backup, which appears to be the only user that can be used for the backup.
    3. Follow the instructions here: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/docs/en/appletimemachine.pdf. BUT, what the instructions don't tell you is the password for that user, which Mac OS will ask you for during the Time Machine setup. On my device, it was "admin" but other posts say the password can be "backup" or "wd_backup."
    4. Ignore some of the misleading statements in the Western Digital "knowledge base." For example, it says Time Machine is not supported. That used to be true but with the firmware update, is no longer true. Also, some instructions direct you to make a partition on your drive for Time Machine using Disk Utility. This is not possible, as far as I can tell, because the MyBook World Edition II shows up as a "share," not a "device" in the system, and therefore Disk Utility does not see it.
    5. The reason I wanted to set up a partition, where I could limit the disk space, is that I read that Time Machine creates daily backups, with incremental versions of documents. Thus, the Time Machine backup will eventually fill up whatever space is given to it. Since I could not partition the MyBook World Edition II, what I did instead was to enable the "Quota" functionality and then put a disk quota on the WD_Backup user. I hope this will do the trick. (I have the further issue of having two Time Machine backups, one for me, one for my wife. How our Time Machines will battle it out for the disk space, I have no idea.)
I hope that the Western Digital people will create greater flexibility for Time Machine users in future firmware updates.
    Anyway, hope this helped.

You do need to know that Apple may not support this: Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733 (Leopard) or http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html (Snow Leopard).
You may be able to get it to work successfully, but there's no guarantee it will work well, or in the future.
From a post in another forum (found by V.K.):
The technical reason why Apple limits Time Machine to 10.5 AFP volumes appears to be to prevent disk image corruption. There were additional features added to AFP in 10.5 to support Time Machine. These presumably allow the disk image engine to force disk image journal data to write out all the way to the disk. Without such features, a network interruption can result in a corrupted filesystem on the disk image despite journaling. Remember, journaling relies on the journal being written all the way to disk before the changes take place. If you can't guarantee that (e.g., because of network/NAS buffering) then the journal is useless. Time Machine appears to rely heavily on disk journaling to deal with network drop-outs, interrupted backups, and the like. Take this away and your data is at risk.
If the NAS you are using supports these features it should report them to the OS and you should natively be able to choose that volume. If you have to trick the OS to use the volume it means the NAS does not support it.
To summarize: if you care about your backup data you should avoid using non-natively supported AFP servers.
That post obviously applies to Leopard; Snow Leopard appears to have added some requirements, that are also not supported by all NAS devices: some that were working with Leopard no longer work with Snow Leopard.
As long as you understand the risks, it's your call. But do yourself a favor and maintain some sort of secondary backup, such as a "clone" via CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, or some other backup app. (Many of us do that with any backup app: no app is perfect, and all hardware fails, sooner or later.)

  • World Edition, Turkey couldn't register my phone

I was in Turkey for 3 months last year. I bought the World Edition BlackBerry so I would have communication with my family and friends while I was abroad. In Turkey, you have to register your phone with a cell company, otherwise service will be disrupted after two weeks. When I attempted to register my phone, they said that they could not do it because the BlackBerry network had no knowledge of me. As a result, I had to use Skype, which was a pain because I had to schedule my calls to home. Also, the phone worked with a Vodafone sim, but not with a Turkcell sim. Has anyone traveled to Turkey and had the same problem? If not, what were the steps you took to register your phone?
If it helps, in the States I am with Alltel and they do not use sims except for their "global" BlackBerrys. Could this be the problem? I have called Alltel and they have no clue what to do and some of them have no idea what I'm talking about. I'm getting married there this summer and really need to have this situation fixed because our guests are arriving at different times and I will either turn to crack or run away if I have to polish wedding plans AND stay inside trying to coordinate things from Skype.

  • No Browser on 8830 World Edition

My wife has inherited an 8830 World Edition on the Sprint network.  It was formerly in use for a business and has some of the features blocked such as the web browser.  She would like to now use it for personal use such as email (which works) and web browsing (which doesn't work).  Is there any way to unlock these features?  The only thing we can do is try and go to the Sprint Store  to (hopefully) download a browser and it gives a message that  "the it policy does not allow downloading third-party applications."
Any help in unlocking these features would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Firmware Update for my blackberry 8830 world edition with Bell Canada

Hi does anyone know if there is firmware update for the Blackberry 8830 world edition with the carrier being Bell Canada?  I am running version 4.2 and I know there is 4.5 but I am not sure if this applies the my phone with Bell Canada. When I boot up my desktop manager and checks for updates and says that there is no update.  I don't want to update if it is not necessary and not be able to run my blackberry.  If I am able to update where would I go to get the 4.5 update?

You have to repair Desk Manager or unintall and reintall DM, but this time uncheck "Auto update" and anything that refer to "update" the reason why I mention that is because everythime you run DM, it goes online and check for newer version and put this file "vendor.xml" in the Blackberry Common Folder, and with that file in place, it will block the program from installing the newer version from a difference cell company..
From what I see 4.2 is the only version that is up to date for a 8830...but if you have a 8820, you can update to 4.5.

  • How can i transfer my 2 8830 world edition verizon phones to another US provider? is this possible?

I have 2 bb world editions that I paid cash for, and i live near the ocean and verizon stinks here due to a small hill that blocks the local phone tower, other services work fine here, ATT is really good, sprint isnt great, etc... but I am tired of having to go stand 3 feet into the surf to get calls threw, and cant tether at all... and verizon wants me to pay them a lot for the last month of no service... ssoooooo is there any way to transfer to another carrier? Help...!!! thanks for any info
    william

Ok, the devices are yours< and what happens with the contract, can you get out of contract?
If you can change the service to Sprint, ATT is GSM and the devices are CDMA.

  • MyBook World Edition NAS, how do I get it to work, Guide would be grateful

    *+_Hello readers!_+*
I have recently bought a new MBP and I have got a Mybook world Edition NAS which I used with my Windows Vista in the past, where I just plugged the network cable right into the PC and maped it as a network drive.
On my MBP however I dont know how I do this, that is why Im posting this new thread in hope that someone who have knowledge in this matter would give me a simple guide/tutorial on how to get this to work. Would use it for Time Machine if possible.
If you know how to get it to work over AEBS as well it would be highly appreciated.
    Sincerely
    Anders

I had the same problem and called Abbott with no luck.
But I found a way, there is a new version 1.2 out there that works but it cannot be installed directly on Lion.
You need access to a Leapard or Snow Leapard computer.
    1. Install on Lion (I know it installs but it does not work)
    2. Install from your meter on  and update the software from there to 1.2
    3. Copy the installation folder from the application folder of Leapard to Lion Application folder
    4. Launch the app and it will see your meter.
    Good luck.

  • Time Machine / WD My Book World Edition (white light) / Multiple Users

I've been scouring the web for information about backing up several users to a single My Book World Edition (White Light) using Time Machine and haven't had much success.
Does anyone out there know if it's possible? I've read that you can do this (different users/passwords) on the time capsule but I'm wondering if there's a procedure to allow you to do the same thing on the Western Digital drive.
    Thanks!

I'm wondering if she logs onto the wd_backup user name (required for time machine to see the WD drive) and uses time machine, will her files overlap my existing back up files?
No.  Each Mac's backups will be in a separate sparse bundle disk image.  That's done by Time Machine (not WD), using a hardware identifier on the Mac it's running on -- not user accounts, disk names, or even computer names.
I've read that using a time capsule, you're able to have different computers back up to the device with their own passwords.
You can set up a TC that way, but you don't have to.  I suspect very few folks do that.

  • Need help with WD MyBook World Edition

    Hello,
I need some help on behalf of my whole office. I work for a digital print shop. We use a MyBook World Edition (not sure if 1 or 2) as our shared drive. Essentially, our receptionist places files from the client into MyBook, we access it from our computers in the back, and then use it again to transfer files to the computers that control the printers. I don't run the company, please don't tell me how we could be doing this better.
On Monday, all of our computers suddenly got kicked from MyBook. We didn't do any updates or change anything, it just stopped working. This system has been working for us for months, possibly years I haven't been here that long. We reset it, and the Windows machines were able to recognize and access the drive. It shows up on the Macs under the shared panel, but we can't access it. It just says "connecting" forever, nothing happens. This problem is affecting 2 Mac Pros with Snow Leopard, and 1 with Mavericks.
This is a huge deal for us, and we really need to get it fixed. We've resorted to passing files around on flash drives for the week, and it's been frustrating to say the least. If it helps, we have our MyBook in the front office, connected to an Airport Express Base Station. All of the computers connect via wifi.
I'll be watching this discussion all day, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Have you turned the external drive off, let is set for approximately 30 seconds, and then turned it back on? Restarted computers?
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
