Will there be a noticeable improvement if I upgrade my mac memory?

Hi
I am using a MacBook Pro 13" early 2011 and running Yosemite. 4Gb
I have been meaning to upgrade my mac memory for a while now because performance issues are really becoming a problem.
Sometimes even the simplest of tasks is like running through treacle. This could be opening an app like Chrome or Mail or simply clicking system preferences. The wait time before these opening isn't massive but if it takes around a minute or two, to open them than in my view that is incredibly slow.
As the OS systems updates have gotten better, more frequent and contain more features, I have noticed that the performance has really suffered.
I dread to think how the machine would perform if I did anything that remotely put it through its paces by running a game or even something like iMovie.
You want to have your computer to be able to run multiple apps at the same time or in the background and these are just basic utility apps like a web browser, mail and stickies.
I currently use Onyx and the Memory Clean app. I personally find at the moment that the memory clean app pointless. The majority of the time it indicates that there is between 0% - 3% free memory available. I then click clean memory, sometimes several times in a row and it usually frees up around 30% then after around 5 minutes it is back down to that 0%-3% mark again.
I rarely use any memory chugging apps. Say for example as I write this post the memory clean app indicates there is 1% free memory yet all that is running is Mail App, Chrome and Google Drive (Don't get hung up on these apps, it happens regardless of the app). I find myself constantly having to go around after myself closing every app after I have used it and this even happens with no apps running at all.
So my real question is. If I upgrade my memory using crucial to the 8GB memory. Will I notice any tangible difference or will that amount still be inadequate?
I know there is a 16GB option but it is fairly expensive and I hear of potential issues with overheating.
Thanks for your help

I have taken a few screenshots. Do these help?

what are you updating?  But the short answer is no.  whether an iOS device or a Mac you should't "lose" anything.  the only problems you might run into are compatibility issues with software not being able to run on newer system software....ie.  upgrading to OSX LION means no more PPC apps anymore.

  • Will there be any impact for OSD when upgrading ADK/MDT/R2?

We’re planning to upgrade our production ConfigMgr environment so that we can deploy Server 2012 and Windows 8.1.
Currently we have ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 CU3 with MDT 2012 Update 1 and Windows ADK 8.0.  We have one Primary site and several secondaries.
My understanding is that I need to do the following:
Upgrade Windows ADK 8.0 to 8.1 (uninstall 8.0, install 8.1 on our Primary site)
Upgrade MDT 2012 U1 to MDT 2013 on our Primary site
Install ConfigMgr 2012 R2 on our Primary site
My primary concern with this upgrade is that we are in the middle of our Windows XP to 7 migration.
I am using an MDT 2012 U1 integrated deployment task sequence including the MDT 2012 toolkit, settings, USMT, and MDT database.
I am looking for feedback/links/resources/horror stories from others who have already been through this.
I would like to minimize OS deployment downtime and plan accordingly for outages.
Here are some concerns that I have:
Will uninstalling/reinstalling ADK have any effect on my existing production task sequence deployments?
They use a USMT 5 package from ADK 8.0
Will upgrading MDT from 2012 U1 to 2013 have any effect on my existing deployment task sequence toolkit, settings, boot image packages etc…
Are there any “gotchas” with the R2 upgrade that will impact my existing deployment task sequences or any ConfigMgr 2012 components (app deployment, software updates etc...)?
Any advice or links are appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

We were in a similar boat, XP->Win7 migration and needed to do our R2 upgrade. We postponed the upgrade until just a month or two ago, and for good reason.
We found alot of issues with OSD, but have been able to resolve them fairly quickly.
WinPE 4.0 boot images must be rebuilt as WinPE 5.0 (this was expected)
Our WinPE 5.0 boot image could not contact the MP because of our HTTPS MPs in the DMZ. Had to stand up internal HTTPS MPs so boot clients could download Task Sequence policy.
All task sequences had to be recreated (we integrate with MDT and 1E Nomad) (this was also expected)
We are still fighting through our issues, but our biggest one just arose last week. Our OS images need rebuilt. We only have three, but we are going through that process now.
Microsoft has not confirmed the upgrade caused the OS image issues, but they recommend we rebuild to be safe.
The symptoms we saw were IE errors, desktop profile errors, DISM errors loading drivers, and black screen/white cursor hangs during Windows Setup. All issues were intermittent, one machine would build fine, another wouldnt.
I dont know what we messed up or configured that caused all this trouble, but the R2 upgrade was the trigger that caused it all to break.
Personally, I would definitely wait until your Win7 migration is complete, unless you can risk the possibility of having to rebuild everything if things go awry.

  • 2GB to 4GB:  Will there be improvement?

I have a 2GHz C2D Mac Mini with 2GB of RAM. It's been working fine but I've been using Aperture lately and it brings the machine to its knees. Barring getting a new Mac, if I went to 4GB, will there be a noticeable improvement?
I know about the issue of addressing 3GB, so I'm fine w/ the 'wasted' 1GB as long as I see a performance improvement. Just trying to figure out if this is worth the investment.

Oh, and IMHO, a nice big external desktop Firewire HDD, 7200RPM or higher, will trump any internal HDD you put in the Mini, no matter how big and fast. The power and speed of a desktop HDD will even cancel out the fact that the FW port is slower than the internal SATA. A friend of mine actually took the time to measure it, and found this to be true.
An internal SSD could be even faster, but they are simply not cost effective, plus you have to use an external for storage anyway, since a 500GB SSD will set you back at least a grand. If you have that kind of money to spend, you are better off with a Mac Pro, bro'!

  • Will there be a noticable differeance?

will there be any noticeable difference in the macbook air 13inch performance between the 128GB PCIe-based flash storage AND 256GB PCIe-based flash storage?

ROM stands for Read Only Memory, and that has nothing to do with a storage drive (unless you never intend to save anything to it)
For any given architecture (that is currently available) a larger SSD will be faster than the same type in a smaller size, exactly the same rules apply to hard drives.

  • When will there be fix for AirPrint in Yosemite? I cannot use my HP printer. I have uninstalled/resinstalled everything you can think of. I have deleted and added my printer more time than I can count. I have checked for updates. Nothing has worked.

When will there be fix for AirPrint? Since upgrading to Yosemite I cannot print from my MacBook Air which I use mostly. (I can print from the my old 2005 G5 desktop and iPad2 just fine on the same network.) I could print just fine when I had Mavericks. I have tried EVERYTHING under the sun: resetting print system, deleting and adding the printer, checking for updates, uninstalling and reinstalling printer software and folders, turning off modem, router etc. NOTHING works.
The laptop shows that it is printing but nothing happens. Then it says it cannot locate the printer or there is a broken pipe. But it does tell me that I have a low level in one of the ink cartridges (which is true.)
Help! I have warned everyone I know not to upgrade. Is there a way to go back to Mavericks?

  • Will there performance improvement over separate tables vs single table with multiple partitions?

Will there performance improvement over separate tables vs single table with multiple partitions? Is advisable to have separate tables than having a single big table with partitions? Can we expect same performance having single big table with partitions? What is the recommendation approach in HANA?

    Suren,
first off a friendly reminder: SCN is a public forum and for you as an SAP employee there are multiple internal forums/communities/JAM groups available. You may want to consider this.
    Concerning your question:
You didn't tell us what you want to do with your table or your set of tables.
As tables are not only storage units but usually bear semantics - read: if data is stored in one table it means something else than the same data in a different table - partitioned tables cannot simply be substituted by multiple tables.
Looked at it on a storage technology level, table partitions are practically the same as tables. Each partition has got its own delta store & can be loaded and displaced to/from memory independent from the others.
Generally speaking there shouldn't be too many performance differences between a partitioned table and multiple tables.
However, when dealing with partitioned tables, the additional step of determining the partition to work on is always required. If computing the result of the partitioning function takes a major share in your total runtime (which is unlikely) then partitioned tables could have a negative performance impact.
Having said this: as with all performance related questions, to get a conclusive answer you need to measure the times required for both alternatives.

  • Will there be any improvements made to how Photoshop handles pixel dimensions on a Retina display?

I'm a web designer and I still use Photoshop to mockup, to a certain extent the design of my websites. I find it frustrating however that when I make the mockup, it appears half-size in Photoshop. I have to double the size of everything to make it "appear" as it would in browser. Will there be anything done in future versions of Photoshop to make this a little less painful. I have to zoom in right now on normal sized templates which makes everything pixelated. It's annoying when you do this all day long. Maybe this has been discussed before. Sorry if I'm late to the party.

I think I have a workaround: Make sure the clipboard settings are on 72 by cutting and pasting a 72 dpi file in PS, as it seems Illustrator images are seen that way, no matter what the output resolution is. Click on Photoshop and start a new document. It will retain the proportions of the Illustrator image in 72 dpi. Then open image size and make sure the resample box is checked. Change the resolution to the desired, in my case 200.. Then place and crop your photo, and save the PSD file. Open Illustrator and place the PSD file. This works for me.

  • Will 32GB RAM have noticeable benefit compared to 16GB?

Will 32GB RAM have noticeable benefit compared to 16GB?  Reason I'm asking is that I've just built a new PC: 3770K, 32GB RAM, SSD for OS and programs, SSD for scratch, Caviar Black for storage, etc but unfortunately Windows 7 Home Premium only allows 16GB RAM!  I have Windows 8 Pro which I could install giving me access to full 32GB but only really want to do this if 32GB will offer tangible benefit to Photoshop.
Would love to hear from those that actually have upgraded from 16GB to 32GB.  Thx!

    Hi Noel,
I usually have quite a few windows open.  At the moment (which is probably fairly typical) I have Lightroom, Photoshop, 10 tabs in Firefox, Outlook and Mediamonkey (mp3 player).  One of the little things I like about Windows 8 in a dual monitor setup is that the task bar on both monitors display open apps and those pinned there.  With Windows 7 only the main monitor got them.  Also the new start window (which started life as 'metro') only displays on one monitor so the other monitor still shows apps/desktop.
Overall, I would say it is a better user experience, performance seems very good and start up time is improved.  Just another example of the difference betweem W7 and W8: I have a Logitec surround system that used to be a real pain everytime I did a fresh install of W7.  I'd have to install drivers manually and then mess around with settings for quitte a while before it would work.  It was a common complaint on the Logitech user forums.  When I installed W8, the system worked flawlessly - I installed no drivers or did anything.  I was amazed!
And yes, I have a GeForce (570) so can't comment on other CARDs.  When I first installed W7 with the card I had to manually install the right graphics driver.  With W8 it seemed to find them automaticaly and it booted straight up without a problem.  I did however then proceed to get the latest drivers from Nvidea and do a manual driver install just in case.
And unless there is some technical reason preventing it, I bet Aero will return to W8 in an update - many people have commented on that.

Will there be an iPod touch 5th generation 8gb? If so when?

Siri really does little on the iPod itself. All teh work in done on Apple's servers. Siri would run fin on an 8GB (about 6 GB available to the user). However, with a 5 MP camera, and especially 1080P video recording, 6 GB ort usable storage would not allow muck recording. The 1080P video will be about 180 MB/min.

  • Is there a way to improve the performance of a report group?

    Hi gurus,
Is there a way to improve the performance of a report group?
    Points will be given later....
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
Thank you for your response. I thought there's no answer for this issue and planning to change it to ALV.
I looked at the codes and debugged it. After the select statement from ZZUWT table (customized), there's a loop that takes much time (10-12mins) for 1000 records. and several nested perform routines. It's a standard program so I'm hesitant to edit it.
I'll be checking on the primary keys. If it's ok, may I ask for your assistance in this part? Though I'm not that familiar and haven't tried creating a report painter before.
    Thanks anyway...:D

  • Will URLS (Unified light speed) improves the current app. perf. as well ?

    Hi,
We are using ABAP webdynpro application that encapsulates Interactive PDF as well. But it's performance is not good.
Normally it takes 30-50 seconds when user opens the workitem from UWL which further calls the webdynpro application and shows the pdf to user.
My question is if we go for EHP1 for NW that will give Unified Rendering Light Speed in Web Dynpro ABAP  then will this technology helps to improve the current webdynpro application performance or only the new applications that will be built using this.
Please suggest me for this or tell me the other way to improve the performance of webdynpro application.
    Thanks,
    Rahul

    Hi Rahul,
The new light speed rendering engine is the rendering framework to render the Webdynpro applications. Therefore there is nothing where by you specify that a particular application is developed using the Light speed rendering engine.
In other words to answer your question, EHP1 will improve the performance for all the applications whether developed on EHP1 or developed prior to EHP1.

Why the transmition to the tv from my iPad is slow cutting off ... Is there a way to improve connectivity ?

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • When will there be an update for RAW files from the new Olympus OM-D E-M10 for Lightroom 4?

    Hello there,
when will there be an update for Lightroom 4 which provides the option to import RAW-files from the Olympus OM-D E-M10 directly into LR4?

Lightroom 5.0 came out in June 2013 with a public beta for LR5 available at Adobe Labs back in April 2013.  It seems you may have been unlucky purchasing the old version just before the new version came out, or perhaps LR5 required a minimum OS level your computer didn’t have.
Purchasing a new version every year isn’t necessary, but you do have to buy a new version whenever you buy an unsupported camera.
Adobe employees need to get paid just like the rest of us, and their releasing a new payfor version every so often is how they get paid.
Never mind that the new version has improvements beyond new camera support, so there was a full development-release-training-marketing effort behind it.
The upgrade price is cheaper than the full purchase price and if you want Photoshop capabilities, there is a LR+PS Photographer’s Bundle that is half the price of purchasing Photoshop, itself:
