Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

  • So you cant update the 2nd Generation ipod touch anymore?

So you cant update the 2nd Generation ipod touch anymore?

I must voice my total dissatisfaction here.
My iPod touch 2nd gen is less than 3 years old - it can't run the latest iOS, My G5 tower at home can't run the latest OS. I am a .mac user (I have been since it started) but I can't migrate to iCloud and the .mac service is being deprecated. Everything is considered too old to update.
Well - I can update in fact - if I buy a new Mac and a new iPod. This means essentially throwing away my old Apple hardware (again - I have 8 old Macs in the basement). I'm pretty sick of finding myself in this situation. I run both Macs and PCs - one of my development PCs here is still running WIndows 98 very well!
So what I am likely to do is cancel all my Apple services and mothball all my Apple products, as I can't really afford the luxury of upgrading all my hardware (over £2500) just so my calendars and contacts will sync across my devices. I'm likely to migrate to Windows to do this. Painful.
Shameful behaviour from Apple in this age of concern over excess consumption and excess waste production. You've lost (another) long-term Apple devotee and evangelist.

  • Will there come a software update for the "older" ipods?

Hi all, will there come a software (firmware?) update for the new menu of the Ipod Video?
I have an Ipod video 60Gb and I'm really happy with it, but I found out that the newest ipods have some extra functionality in menu structure, which enhances the search.
    Thanks for your answers!

    Thank you for your answer.
Well, they might not have had the possibility then...
Maybe it's just one of those features that were invented later...
My wife has an Ipod Mini and it has less menu possibilities than my ipod video...
I have posted the request, but as stated it will be very unlikely that they will answer the request.
Thanks anyway, ipod is really the best!

Unlikely. If Apple had wanted this feature for older
iPod videos, they would've implemented it in the last
    update.
However anything is possible so if you want it,
    suggest it to Apple here.

  • Will Apple cover me if updating to iOS5 on ipod Touch 3rd gen ruins/bricks it?

I have heard stories of some people's apple products not working/bricked after attempting to upgrade to iOS5.
I have a 1.5 year old ipod Touch 3rd gen. No warranty on it from Apple (tho I do have one from Square Trade for ADH, but I called them and they said if it is a software issue, they don't cover it.)
I am very concerned about d/ling the ios5 upgrade and it ruining my ipod touch.  In effect, I will take a device that could fetch almost $200 on ebay (which I could then use to upgrade to a Touch 5gen), and turn it into a worthless piece of junk if I upgrade and it ruins it.
Also, I know that they have released 5.0.1 (beta I believe?) for update.   I still read stories on here from people waiting until now (Nov, a month after it was first released when so many people tried to d/l it and had terrible problems), but now are still getting network timed out error msgs, etc.
So is there ANY protection from Apple if their update should screw my ipod touch??
Should I just wait longer for a final, stable version  of ios 5? (like v5.1)  Or just totally skip the iOS 5 upgrade and stay safe with iOS 4?  I don't know that it is really worth the $200 loss risk to upgrade to iOS5.  (i.e. 3rd gen doesn't have the ability to find and lock/wipe my lost touch, etc.)
I do know that I should:
    1) install itunes 10.5 anew on my laptop  (itunes and syncing WAS done on my tower, until I just got it back from being serviced for some Major problems/virues/malware/etc.  I'm not comfortable using it, as the problems on it included not being able to start Local Services, connect to the internet, no audio services, etc.  The guy says it is booting up and services are working now, but you never know....But i digress...)
    2) be on AC and not battery on my laptop
    3) be hardwired (ethernet) to the internet and not use my wireless connection
    4) turn off Windows 7 Firewall, and disable my PC Tools Spyware Docter with Antivirus.
So, what do you all think? should I wait until later to upgrade to say os 5.1?  Should I even RISK upgrading to iOS5 on a touch 3gen and lose almost $200 cash?  And will Apple give me ANY protection should it ruin my touch?  (I seriously doubt it.)
    Thanks for input.

Before proceeding with the update, it wouldn't hurt to manually back up the iPod in iTunes by right->clicking on it from under the Devices section and choosing Backup.    See this article for more information on what is stored in the backup.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
Also make sure that any content you may have synced to the device from iTunes, such as Music, movies, TV Shows, podcasts, etc. are all stored on your computer and in iTunes before updating the iPod's version of iOS.
Otherwise, I would go ahead with the upgrade.  I didn't have any issues with it on my iPhone.

  • How do you update the 2nd generation ipod touch to get IOS 4.3?

My niece sold me her second generation ipod touch so I could give it to my five-year old for christmas. I was so excited to give it to him, until I tried to start loading apps.  It kept saying that I needed IOS 4.3.  How do I get that on this ipod?  This was going to be his BIG gift because obviously I don't want to buy a five-year old a brand new ipod touch.  I will be so upset and disappointed if I can't use this...

Sorry, the 2nd generation iPod Touch can not be upgraded beyond iOS 4.2.1.

  • When will there be a software update for the Media Hub?

    1. Many issues related to playing media types - Need updated or increased CODEC's - Flash, MPG, Divix, WMP should ALL play. Why don't you put ALL the CODEC's in????
    2. Support for iTunes playlists.  This should be a basic funtion.
    3. Funtion to get rid of duplicates as common sense tells you that he Media Hub will see your iTunes LIbrary and the built in function of "Import" creates duplicates.
    4. Support for better identification of iTunes related Album artwork.  It's there! Wht does the Media Hub not see it as iTunes does?
    5. Larger buffer options to cut back on load times for large libraies of photo files. Don't mind giving up some disk space for this too or using an external mem card!
    6. Better Sony Play Station support as SP3 sees files as not compatible, yet plays them and not others.
    7. When can we expect some form of software update?
    8. Does the Media Hub (405) run faster with a single drive if you turn off the two drive option?

    1. You have to understand that it would be close to impossible to place all the codecs in one device. As some codecs requires DRM.
    2. I'm not sure what codec you are after in itunes since M3U is supported by the media hub. Supported File Types for the Built-In Media Player in the NMH
    3. I strongly agree with you in this one. Duplicate files using the Import Tool should be automatically be removed. That's why I don't use the Import Tool anymore instead I just use the NTI Shadow when transferring files automatically to the hub.
    4. The media hub uses AMG Server to look for album artworks. But the last upgrade of the firmware allows you to use your album arts without the interference of the AMG Server but the art must be tagged on the media file.
    5. I agree with you on this one as well.
    6. I always keep in mind that not all devices works as what we expect it to be. So better just bear with the Play Station support until we get some updates.
    7. Only LinksysbyCisco can answer that. LoL
    8. The media hub functions the same way regardless whether you are running on 2 drives or 1. But of course, there will be some minor differences on Read and Write performance when running on RAID 1 since both the drives will have to read and write the same files into it making the processor double its work.

  • Will there be a software update? (iCloud)

    Hello,
I was wondering if Apple is going to update the Apple TV software when MobleMe is officially over and replaced with iCloud?
The reason I ask is because MobileMe isnt accepting new account applications, and I dont currently have a MobileMe account. And so the MobileMe app on my Apple TV is useless. But I do have an iCloud account. So will they replace the MobileMe app with an iCloud app on June 30th or sometime soon...Does anyone know? Or will they wait until iOS 6 comes out? It just seems silly to wait until then when they could implement the change on June 30th or sometime breifly afterward.
    Any info would be helpful,
    Thanks.

I suspect that users younger than us maybe, already see the Apple TV's main strength as cloud based rather than iTunes on your computer based.
Not having to have a computer on is a great benefit for things you can stream that you've purchased, internet connection caps etc allowing.
If I ever get around to getting Virgin optical I would use it even more.  Strangely the AppleTVs mostly get used now for kid's stuff I would never buy (from Netflix) and music - with music my slow internet is more than capable of using iTunes Match on the family room TV for songs/music videos - if I want the lossless CD rips I'll use the Mac Mini in the room I have my hi-fi.
The downside again of Apple TV Show/Film purchases is the video quality.  I was pleased to see they now have the original Star Trek series in HD in iTunes here.  Unfortunately when I bought an episode to try out yesterday the resolution was only 960x720 which is dissapointing.  I have series 1 on HD-DVD (yes, I know) and it is very impressive, whereas the HD iTunes purchase seemed little better than DVD and oddly artificial looking.
If I'm paying good money for things I really do want optimum quality whether it's video or music.  Until iTunes offers lossless CD quality I see no reason to buy from there other than convenience when the CD is usually cheaper.  Same goes for movies/TV Shows - I bought a boxed set of kids movies (17 titles) for the cost of 3 or 4 from iTunes - it makes no sense other than convenience.
All that aside when they integrate AppleTV with Twitter, Facebook, Habbo Hotel or whatever I suspect we'll be done here

  • Will there be a software update for 7th gen

Is Apple planning to kill the iPod? Release an iPod 8th gen? Or any new software with features? (Not sure if you can give any of this info)

We are all users here like yourself. There won't be any new firmware with features and you will just have to wait and see if Apple is going to update the Nano or Shuffle (the Classic is already gone).

  • How can i update the 4.1 iPod touch to the most allowable version of 6.1? I have only been able to go to 4.2

I would like to transfer the apps and music from my computer to a new iPod touch that was previously owned by my brother. My previous iPod is lost or stolen. I also need to update it to 6.1, the highest allowable upgrade, which allows at least some of the older versions of some apps to work (such as Facebook, youtube). I have only figured out how to update it to 4.2. They say I can't have help over the phone unless I pay $29, although they have helped me in the past in a similar situation. Thanks. John

Upgrading it depends on what model it is:
See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.

  • HT5457 why dont you update the 3rd gen ipod touch to iOS 6?

I have a 3rd gen ipod touch and don't have the money to get a newer ipod so why cant you make iOS 6 available for 3rd gen ipod touches?

    1) You are not talking to Apple here.  We are users just like you.
    2) The 3rd gen iPod does not have the hardware to be able to use iOS 6
    3) As of now, almost all available apps will also run on iOS 5.
