Will There ever be a music player app comparable to Windows Media Player??

I continue to be discouraged since beginning to use a Mac that I can't find any music player comparable to Windows media Player and all it could do. I find itunes very annoying and have been using songbird instead but it doesn't open as a default when selecting a song from a file.
Things itunes can't do:
I can't select a list of songs from a folder and play them in the order of the files in the folder.
I can't listen to a file without it automatically being added to the list for the next time I enter itunes
I can't change the fiie name of a song and have itunes recognize the change and adapt.
It does not add songs to the song list I have added to a file folder on my computer
It also doesn't give you an option to delete all the songs that don't exist any more. If i delete something fro a file, it is still on the itunes song list and i have to manually delete each one.
Also, I can't browse by genre or one album only.. its always one big list. if i select one song from a folder to play, i tunes will next skip to the next song in the itunes player to play next.
There is no "now playing" column to see what has been played
ANyways, I just keep hoping someone will develop something, or every time itunes says it has an update - i hope.
Songbird is much better but still not top. I feel this is a big need for apple.. especially if you want satisfied customers switching from microsoft who want a comparable experience. its frustrating enough getting used to so many things, but the programs shoudl be able to do these simple things.
i cal is another story...
Just hopeful that a developer can meet these issues someday! Im sure they CAN, but someone needs to tell you they are issues!!!

Hi, Cheryl,
You are correct about some of your statements. iTunes is designed as a complete content manager, and while that works well for many people, if you want to be able to work with your files directly in Finder and play them based on that organization, then iTunes probably indeed does not work for you. Just a few notes, though:
I can't select a list of songs from a folder and play them in the order of the files in the folder.
Correct. iTunes doesn't understand folders in the OS file structure and other than just the path name to the track file doesn't care about OS folders at all.
I can't listen to a file without it automatically being added to the list for the next time I enter itunes
Also correct; iTunes needs to add the track to its library file so it can find the track. You can play tracks in QuickTime Player, though, or directly from Finder and not have to use iTunes and it's file management.
I can't change the fiie name of a song and have itunes recognize the change and adapt.
It does not add songs to the song list I have added to a file folder on my computer
Correct. iTunes has no folder-watching feature, so changes made manually wil not be recognized automatically. There are third-party utilities that can automate some of this, Hazel for instance.
It also doesn't give you an option to delete all the songs that don't exist any more. If i delete something fro a file, it is still on the itunes song list and i have to manually delete each one.
The real solution to this is to not remove tracks manually from the OS but rather to delete them from inside of iTunes. But if you really want to remove the tracks manually and then get them removed from iTunes, try this script courtesy of the very-useful Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes:
http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=removedeadsuper
Also, I can't browse by genre or one album only.. its always one big list.
Turn on the Column Browser: View menu -> Column Browser -> Show Column Browser
You can select whether you wish it on top or the side, and what sections appear. You can then browse by genre, artist or album, and can play specific albums and have iTunes stop playing when the album is finished.
if i select one song from a folder to play, i tunes will next skip to the next song in the itunes player to play next.
Correct. If you uncheck all the tracks, though, iTunes will play one and stop. That often causes other issues if you uncheck them all, but unchecking a track is how you get iTunes to skip playing it.
There is no "now playing" column to see what has been played
Not if you're not using playlists, no, but iTunes DJ might be of some help in this regard. It's not designed for manual playing, but it can be sort of forced into that sort of use.
I've not seen any player that provides what I would consider to be an improvement on iTunes. Songbird is the only player I know of in current development, and it has its own strenghts and weakness. What it really comes down to is a design philosoply; iTunes is designed to handle all the management of the track files so you don't have to. For those of us who that philosoply suits, iTunes works very well indeed. For those like you who want to do your own management, iTunes doesn't suit and probably never will.
Regards.

  • When I plug in my ipod Nano i syncs to itunes but I can't get the music from my Library in Windows Media Player???

How can I get my music from my Library in Windows Media Player to sync to my iPod Nana?

You can't sync an iPod using Windows Media Player.  You need to add the songs to your iTunes library first, and then sync those songs to the iPod.
This document provides more information (Add to Library section)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1347
NOTE:  The WMA files (the file type used by Window Media Player) need to be unprotected (no DRM).  They are converted to a format supported by iTunes while adding to the iTunes library.  This WMA conversion feature only works in the Windows version of iTunes (Mac users cannot do it).
I believe you can drag and drop the WMA files, or the folder containing the WMA files, onto the iTunes window.  The original WMA files are not changed.  iTunes creates its own converted files at the location it stores all the iTunes media files.

  • Playing iPhone music on a laptop using Windows Media Player?

I would like to be able to play my music through my work laptop speakers when travelling. I don't want to sync music in either direction, just to be able to access & play the music files through a standard Windows Media Player. I've searched for a solution, but the only ones I've found involve jailbreaking the phone.
The iPhone is 3G running OS 3.1.2. My iTunes files are encoded as MP3, so the file format shouldn't be a problem.
As the software on the laptop is strictly controlled by the IT department, installing iTunes and my library is not an option.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Simon.

Thanks for the replies. I don't expect it to be a feature of the iPhone, but do expect it to be a feature of the Windows software. After all, the Windows box can see the iPhone photos directory appearing as a removable disk... it's only software, right?

  • Playing music through Air Tunes using Windows Media Player

    Hello to all.
I am planning on buying the Air Port Express so I can play music wirelessly from my Dell. The only problem I have with is that I can't use the keyboard media buttons (play/pause, stop, next, previous) with iTunes. These buttons work with Windows Media Player, so I was hoping that I could use WMP instead of iTunes. Can this work? Or, is there a way to make the buttons work with iTunes?
    Thanks a ton.

Don't know about doing this in windows, but on a Mac you can re-map the keys for those commands to different keys on the keyboard. Or perhaps it would be better to say that you can map ADDITIONAL keys to those commands. There should be something to allow you to do the same thing in Windows.
    Good luck!

  • Is there any way I can transfer iTunes purchases to Windows Media Player?

I want to transfer my iTunes purchases into Windows Media Player so I can put songs onto my flash drive. Three songs have automatically transferred into Windows Media Player but no other songs or albums have, and I can't find any way to transfer files manually. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Of course iTunes will not sync to a flash drive, it only syncs to iDevices.
Right click on the file and select "Show in Windows Explorer" or "Show file location" whatever the wording it.
Then drag the file from there to the flash drive, might even be possible to drag directly from iTunes.
There is no syncing... simply copy the files.

  • Is there a downloader which can transfer video to RealPlayer, Window Media player, etc?

Might someone tell me of a downloader which can transfer videos to Real Player, Windows Media Player and the like?
    Thank you,
    Leeflea

cor-el, now you are talking to a fool and an idiot when it comes to computers. As I tell people, I'm a R.N. and can take care of the sickest of the sick but when it comes to computers, well, I just don't have it.
I probably wasn't clear. What I'd like to do is, if I see a video, I'd like to easily be able to download it to RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, Winamp or the like but I just don't have the know how to do so.
Might you assist me further, please? I've searched the add-ons on Mozilla and they seem too complicated. I need a 12 y/o kid here to teach me. LOL.

  • H.264 is pixelated in QT player but not in Windows Media Player

    Hi All,
I have been pulling out my hair while dealing with h.264 compression.
I figured out how to get rid of the washed out color - using the movie properties> transparency stuff.
But now I still have pixelation problems. In a specific part of my video, I have pink on blue in a sharp line. There is pretty major pixelation where the 2 colors meet. I realized that this pixelation only shows up when the h.264 is played in quicktime player. I play it in Windows Media Player and there is no pixelation. I am ultimately uploading this to Vimeo.com and I tried a test, and it is still pixelated when uploaded to Vimeo.
Please help me if you have any idea why this is happening
    Thanks!!!!
    Akira

Make sure you're using the QT7 player and that it is set to high quality playback.

  • I can burn CDs from Windows Media Player, but not from itunes.  I always get Error 2131.  How do I transfer music files from itunes to Window Media Player Library?...or convince itunes to burn a CD?

    Cannot burn CD from itunes.

The thing is, they are in the unprotected format? (
They are protected WMA from when you RIP'd them with WMP. iTunes will not read them.
Go to WMP Tools -> Rip Music.
Under Rip settings, it is set to *Windows Media Audio* and most likely *Copy protect music* is ticked. This is how it is protected.
You will need to reRIP them all from CD.

  • HT1849 how to import music and video from windows media player

I want to import my music and videos from the windows media player, and I want to import or put it all in my itunes library. How do I do that. I know there is a button.
Am I missing it? Can someone help me please. I am working off of a laptop. If that helps anything.

In Media Player music list, make sure the "Protected" column is displaying. Sort by that column. Any songs that are protected can not be converted to iTunes. You will have to re-rip the CD with the WMP setting to be to not protect the songs.
I had the same problem with album covers and could never fix it. I just gave up. I spoke with people at Apple stores and nothing they suggested worked.

  • Satellite A110 Media Apps for Windows Media Player don't work!

Hello, I've got a Toshiba Satellite A110 Notebook since 2006.
2 Days ago a friend formated my notebook. In order to make the systemstart a little bit faster, he stopped a few Toshiba applications in the system configuration. My notebook worksa now very good.
But here is the problem: Before formatting I could use these helpful Media Apps for my Windows Media Player - basically because of laziness to switch between the programms during working. :-)...
But now, they don't work anymore. :-(
Is it possible, that we've stopped an application, which is important to make these apps run?
Or is an additional driver left?
Or do they only work in cobination with Windows Media Player 10. (now I've installed the WMP 11)
I hope for your helpful answers.
But think over, that I'm not such great computer genius! ;-)... :-(

Try to enable all disabled applications. Go to START > Run and write MSCONFIG inside.
When the System Configuration window is open go to Startup tab and enable all applications with empty Startup Item.
Restart your notebook and check if everything works well again.
