Will this Art Brush trick return in CS5?

I hope, in final release of Illustrator CS5 opportunity of making uniform spirals from Art Brush will return.
Because, as I saw, it’s absent in the pre-release.
P.S. sorry for my English

Nice demo!
Sadly, this is NOT fixed in CS5.
I wasn't aware you could do these tricks, but now that I see them, I really would like this feature to work. It looks like the bug appeared in CS3, and has gone unfixed. Has it been reported as a bug? This forum (new features) might not be the best place to report it...
Thanks,

  • Another "will this set-op be OK for CS5.5?" post.

This is yet another "is the computer I want good enough for CS5.5" question. Before I begin I'll ask you to please forgive my ignorance and the length of this post. I'm new to having to care about computer hardware. In the past any decent PC has met my needs, but I'm no longer finding that to be the case as I now have a need to edit video.
So I'll start with my particular needs. I need portability. I'm a student and direct a summer camp. In my role at camp I have identified the need to improve our camp promotional material, and that's where the video editing comes in. I'll be shooting and editing several promotional shorts and a couple of documentary style shorts using DSLR footage and perhaps a little camcorder or two. After much research, and playing around with some free trial software, I've settled on CS5.5, but there's only one problem, my computer just isn't up to the task. Conveniently enough, my current computer has seen better days and it's time to upgrade anyways, so I've been researching and shopping around trying to find an appropriate computer. As portability is a must, and I can't afford a decent desktop and a laptop (and even if I could always transferring data back and forth would be annoying), I've been looking at laptops. It seems like any off-the shelf laptop that is well suited to run adobe isn't really all that portable. Sure you can transport it a lot easier than a desktop, but you can't expect to get a full day of battery life out of it, nor is it a reasonable weight to carry all over creation (my point is that a 17" laptop is out). So I did a little digging, and after reading a lot of posts on this forum and a lot of information from other sources I think I've come up with a solution. I'm looking for input into potential problems any tech-savvy people see with my idea, and sales reps for dell aren't tech savvy, so I figured this was a good place to find out how well adobe would run on my proposed set-up (I'm not a pro, and won't be editing feature length films, so I don't think I need the same performance as a tricked out desktop, I just need it to perform well with as few hold ups as possible).
Here's what I've come up with:
         Dell XPS 14z:
Intel core i-7 2640M (2.8GHz, with "turbo boost" up to 3.50GHz)
8 GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM
750 GB SATA, 7200rpm  hard drive
Nvidia Geforce 520M 1GB graphics card
The only information on screen resolution I could find on the Dell web-site  was "true 720p HD display" after reading a few reviews, I found the specs were lower than the minimum recommended by Adobe, I forget exactly what they are though.
So this computer is more than I would ever need for my non-video editing needs. On paper it's a nice little laptop, a little pricey ($1300!), but they can be had at a very reasonable price ($700 - $800) refurbished from the Dell online outlet. None-the-less I can see several problems with this set-up.
First is the Display: it's inadequate. That's easily solved by using an external monitor, and you can get a pretty decent monitor off of tiger direct for less than $200. I can tolerate video editing at a desk, I need portability for other applications.
Second is the hard drive. From reading this forum I understand that editing with only one hard drive can slow things down quite a bit. I was wondering how big a deal this really is for the casual editor? There are adaptors that allow you to place a second hard drive where the optical drive is in this laptop. If it's necessary, I plan on putting a second 750GB 7200 rpm HDD where the optical drive is. Problem solved, right? Does anyone see any problems with this idea? My next question about the hard drive topic is: how much would a third hard drive really benefit me? And would data transfer using an external HDD with a USB 3.0 connection be fast enough to be a viable option for a third drive? Either way I could pick up an appropriate hard drive and caddy for a little under $175 and around $100 for an external HDD with USB 3.0 to be used as a third drive if necessary.
The third potential problem is the RAM. It seems there are a lot of opinions out there about how much is enough. Is 8 GB adequate? According to intel's web site this particular processor is compatible with up to 16GB of RAM, and after searching various forums I found a couple instances of people expanding their RAM on this computer to 16GB with no issues. I understand that I can replace the current 2x4GB set up with either 1x4GB + 1X8GB or 2x8GB to give either a total of 12 or 16GB of RAM. Is this necessary or even beneficial?  8GB would be more than enough for anything else I do, and since I have little experience with video editing I thought I'd ask those who know. Is a RAM upgrade necessary? Using this configuration I could update the RAM to 12 GB for around $100 and to 16 GB for around $200.
Finally, the graphics card that comes with this computer isn't on the list of cards recommended by Adobe. I understand that this is because it doesn't support CUDA, how much of an issue is this? Will I be able to efficiently edit video without a recommended card?
The point of all the numbers is this: 800+200+175+100=1,275. For $1275ish it seems to me I could get a very reasonable video editing set up that's still portable. That's less than the sticker price on these laptops, and a lot less than a mac book pro, which is everyone's first recommendation when I mention I want to use the computer for video editing. This seems like a very reasonable price for a laptop with an intel i7 2.8GHz, two 750GB 7200rpm HDD's, 12GB of RAM, and an external monitor for when I want to sit down and edit. Am I delusional in thinking this would run well using CS5.5?
So I guess the point is this. Life is about trade offs, and since I primarily need portability and I'm not a professional (just an anal consumer with high standards :), I'm willing to trade a little bit of video editing performance for the improved portability. I want the opinion of those who have experience using CS5.5 with various set-ups, does my proposed set-up seem like a reasonable trade-off? Are the upgrades even neccessary? Would they be enough to provide a reasonable editing experience? Any other advice (besides buying a desktop or a wicked expensive 17" laptop that weighs two to three times as much and chews through battery life)?
Thanks for sticking with this and giving me any feedback. It's appreciated!

    Benson,
    Glad the comments were helpful!
Regarding RAM, the following test results were mine from an old thread:
"...RAM size: increasing from 4GB to 8GB doubled the MPE GPU performance [11 sec. vs. 6 sec.] and improved the MPEG2-DVD performance [122 sec. vs. 91 sec.]; the other tests only improved marginally. Increasing from 8GB to 16GB made significant additional improvements to the MPEG2-DVD time [91 sec. vs. 37 sec.]; all other tests hardly changed at all". [Note that my testing, and current system, run 5.0.3, not 5.5, but I suspect that these results are still probably reasonable for your situation.]
Thread was: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3465135 (How changes to CPU speed, RAM size, and drives impacted my PPBM5 score)
Regarding graphics card RAM, either card would work just fine for you. User's that have a need for massive frame sizes might benefit from the 3GB model, but for normal HD work the 1.5 will be fine.
    Regards,
    Jim

  • Will this graphics card work with Premiere CS5.5

We're running a Mac Pro 2 x 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 32GB Ram, 10.6.8 and we're looking to move from Apple's FCP to Premiere CS5 but noticed in Adobe's systems requirements on graphic cards the following:
Adobe-certified GPU card for GPU–accelerated performance; visit www.adobe.com/go/premiere_systemreqs for the latest list of supported cards
Here's the list of cards for Mac:
GeForce GTX 285 (Windows and Mac OS)
Quadro FX 4800 (Windows and Mac OS)
Quadro 4000 (Windows and Mac OS)
I don't see any ATI cards and we have a top of the line ATI Radeon HD 4870 this the work station. (link of card specs below)
    http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/ati-radeon-hd-4000/hd-4850/Pages/ati-radeo n-hd-4850-specifications.aspx
Does anyone know if the ATI Radeon HD 4870 will work or are there any limitations?

    Martin Jordan wrote:
So you're saying that the "Quadro 4000 (Windows and Mac OS)" is the best choice to upgrade from my ATI card?
If you're doing things that will take advantage of the hardware within PPro, then yes.  But before you open your wallet, make sure what you're doing will be able to take advantage of the CUDA processors.

  • Art brush on an ellipse creates a gap

See attached file. I am applying this Art Brush on a perfect circle I've drawn with the Ellipse Tool. It is a closed path. Why the gap? Any way to get it to go all the way around?

Art brushes have a beginning and end regardless of what they are applied to. IF the ends of the art used to create the art brush aren't the same as the , then you'll see the end caps.
Art brushes aren't designed to even out the shape. They simply take your shape and transform it to the path. That miniscule gap between the two ends can be corrected by drawing a no-fill, no-stroke rectangle around the art that stops just short of the end of the artwork and is behind the art. Then drag the art and hollow rectangle to the Brush panel.
For your artwork.. I'd use a Pattern Brush, not an Art Brush.

  • When will the "Bookmark this page" selection be returning to the bookmark drop down? No, seriously! We want it back!

The removal of the "Bookmark this page" selection was a huge mistake. None of the answers really solve the issue. Click the star and then click it again so you can edit the bookmark then move it to the folder you want, or install this add-on to manage your bookmarks. The real fix for this issue is simply to put the selection back. People want simple and when they have something that works well they don't want it to change just because the programmer wanted to do it differently. So when will this functionality be returning?

    * If you click the ★ Star Icon once, the bookmark ends up in the Unsorted Bookmarks folder.
    * If you double-click the ★ Star Icon, you get to pick where to place the bookmark.
    * If you right-click (or Ctrl+click on a Mac) an empty area of the web page and choose Bookmark This Page, the bookmark ends up in the Bookmarks Menu folder and you get to pick where to place it.
    * If you press Ctrl+D (Mac: Command+D), the bookmark ends up in the Bookmarks Menu folder and you get to pick where to place it.
    * You can click and drag the site icon (usually a globe or a padlock) on the left side of the address bar onto either the Bookmarks Toolbar, the Bookmarks Sidebar (Ctrl+B; Mac: Command+B), or the Library (Ctrl+Shift+B; Mac: Command+Shift+B; Linux: Ctrl+Shift+O).
The following add-on makes bookmarking easier in various ways. Among other things, it's able to remember the last used folder.
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/add-bookmark-here-2/
I see no reason to believe menu items that were deemed clutter will be reintroduced — especially when there are multiple ways to perform the action in question.

  • Will this configuration work for CS5.5?

Will this Dell work? Intel i7-2600? 16 GB dual channel DDRS SDRAM at 1333Mhz, nvidea geforce gt530? Want to buy Production Premium but have limited budget, don't need top of line computer performance, just workable ... All advice greatly appreciated. (I couldn't find in tech specs which video cards are supported.) Am also looking at Canon XF 100, which i think is supported by CS5.5, right?

    John,
The GT 530 is very slow. It has only 96 cores, crummy DDR3 video RAM, only 128-bit memory bus. Basically a GT 430 with a new OEM-only name on it.
The Quadro 4000 is a ripoff as far as Premiere Pro CS5.5 performance is concerned: It is basically similar in performance to the GTX 460 SE (not the regular GTX 460): Only 256 cores on the Quadro 4000 versus 288 cores on the GTX 460 SE. Worse, the Quadro 4000 costs five times more money than the GTX 460 SE.

  • Art brush not following path

I have an art brush that I created to achieve an offset on an open path.  In some location the brush doesn't follow the path.  I have attached an image.  The narrow pink line is the actual path.  The thicker pink line is the art brush I created for the offset.  You can see at the top of the image what the style is supposed to look like.  Once the path starts curving towards the bottom the path and the brush get out of alignement.  I have tried adding points, which works on other types of brushes, but doesn't seem to work on art brushes.
Any ideas on how I can fix this?  Thanks.

It only occurs around certain curves and bends.  Here is other path with the issue.  You might be able to recreate if you draw a shape like this.  Also, I am using CS4.  I don't know if this is a bug that may have been fixed in CS5.  I don't have any effects applied to any of the strokes.  The only items listed in each line of the appearance is the stadard. "Opacity: Default"
Sometimes if I just redraw the corner using the pencil it will help, but not always. And sometimes adding an extra anchor point at the beginning or end with help, but again not always.  It is very strange and the reason I avoid art brushes if possible.  However, I can't find other way of offsetting a stroke on an open path.

  • CS4 Illustrator art brush applied to path

I've made an art brush that looks like this:
And applied it to some wavy vertical lines. The lines are open paths, all drawn with the pen tool. The brush works fine on some of the lines, but others end up looking like this:
    Any idea what's causing this?

Oh, sorry - I misunderstood Scott's comment. But…there are no fills applied to the original wavy lines; they are just lines. To clarify, in this image, #1 is one of the original wavy lines (just a .5pt line, no fill); #2 is that same line with the brush applied; #3 is a different original wavy line; #4 is #3 with the brush applied, and #5 is a short wavy line with the brush applied, included to show the brush effect on an entire line. 4 & 5 are correct - this is what I expect to happen when I apply the brush. #2, with the even/very oddly filled cut off section, is incorrect.
However, I did figure out that I could fix the problem by slightly reshaping the curves in the misbehaving lines. I'm still curious about what's causing it (don't think anything's corrupt), but this will work for now. Thanks for your help  :-)

  • Art brush question

When I use an art brush on a rectangle the corners all have a flat, angled
outside edge. It doesn't matter what art brush I use, it happens with all
of them. I've tried changing the miter type but that doesn't do anything
with art brushes. Is there anyway to get the brushes to 'flow' around the
    corners without the flat spot?
    Thanks!
    Richard

The simplified file in question is here:
    https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B0kosHJIs4dTZTE1MjgyM2UtZmZmNi00ZDMwLThiNzAtZGE1OTI3MzFhN jBm&hl=en&authkey=CJvuvO0B
    Two layers, two objects.
The blue object is the subject of discussion as the art brush.
The "crystalized" oval with the transparent gradient is on a locked layer.
Trying to change the direction of the art brush while the transparent gradient object's layer is locked fails.
Unlock the layer and the direction change works as expected.
(The CS5 symbol sprayer problem has been discussed on this forum in the past, probably NOT related here since I ruled it out by deleting any in the file)

  • Art Brushes appear grey, and not Rich Black.

Art brushes are showing a grey version of what should be a Rich Black RGB 0, 0, 0,. Furthermore, expanding the art brush stroke and sampling the color shows the strokes "Black" is actually: 32,32,32, pre-expansion the RGB sample shows the stroke is 0,0,0.
    Color Mode=RGB
    Print Proof=NO
    Document =RGB
Display all Blacks, print all Blacks=Rich Black
Options for Art Brush show art brush swatch is Rich Black but using eyedropper (within brush options window) and sampling preview stroke CHANGES swatch preview from Rich Black to Grey. (see attachments)
image 1 (below): Art brush stroke (greyish), over top of pen tool shape (rich Black)

image 3 (below): RGB of stroke after converting to shape.

Image 5 (below—art brush options): Art Brush sampled using colorization..

    Try this.
Use one of the Chalk and Charcoal brushes, like Charcoal - Feather.
Set the colorization method to NONE.
Make a mark. Take a sample reading with the Eyedropper tool. The RGB value will be, 32,32,32 (or some place around there) but defiantly not 0,0,0.
Now EXPAND the stroke and take a reading of the shapes color. Same values.
    It is NOT RICH BLACK.
I DO NOT understand emils directions.

If you are within 14 days of purchase you can still return the iPhone and get the phone that suits your needs, however, I think you will find that no matter which phone you get the content provider will want to know how you are going to pay for future purchases. For Android phones it is Google, and they will certainly want to know.
