Will this damage my macbook pro

Hi guys, I bought this macbook pro 15 inch i7 2.3 ghz for college in a few months. I wanted to also play a few games on it, (call of duty modern warfare 2, Left for Dead, ect..) My dad saw me installing steam, and he got upset, saying that he doesn't want my mac to be screwed up for college. He reminded me that I will be needing to store all my projects and info on this mac, and if it gets damaged that is a lot of money that will be wasted, and time. He doesn't think I should play games on here, because he is worried it could possibly do something to the computer before college rolls around. Do you guys think this would be an issue? should i still install them? Im worried he may be right, but I really wanted to game a little bit before college started.. Ill probably just delete the games during college.

Several other people have told me that this computer was built to withstand tasks heavier than gaming. I have not installed anything. Im just trying to get some input.

  • Will this wreck my macbook pro?

    hi,
i have bought diablo 3 for my macbook pro,
i was wondering how long will the macbook last off charge when playing this game? because if its like 2 hours then if i play the game for 6 hours a day im gonna be getting through 3 life cycles per day which is gonna wear the battery down pretty quickly :L
also if i leave the macbook in charge constantly when playing diablo 3 will this wreck the battery?
i used to have an old samsung laptop (2008) and i left it in charge all the time and now it has a 2 min battery life!
    any help would be appreciated.
    thankyou.

No it won't wreck the battery but since Diablo III requires a constant internet connection and has a hefty graphics requirement, the battery will go pretty fast. Why play unplugged all the time? I'd guess somewhere in the 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hour range BTW but that's just an educated guess. I don't play on battery - much intentionally.

  • Temperature during games - will this damage my macbook?

    Hello,
I've had my Mid-2010 macbook for a few months now and it's working brilliantly. I love it. I've recently installed some games, from steam, on my Macbook. I've tweaked the settings and I've used smcFanControl to set the fan speed to 5600rpm when I play games. When I am playing a game, for instance Day of Defeat:Source, my temperature varies between 65-68 degrees (it sometimes spikes at 80 degrees, but only momentarily and it returns to 65 degrees shortly after). I play games frequently and I was wondering if this 'high' temperature would cause lasting damage to my Macbook in the future.
What do you guys think? Are those temperatures in the 'reasonable' range?

Thanks for the quick response and the reassurance. The insight was well appreciated. Now I can game at ease knowing that I'm not doing any damage to my Macbook! Haha. Thanks again.

  • Need a printer driver for a PIXMA MG2900 that will work on my MacBook Pro Operating System OSX 10.4.11

I have just purchased a Canon Pixma MG2900 printer and need to find a driver for this printer that will work with my MacBook Pro Operating System OSX Version 10.4.11.
I was directed to iTunes PIXMA/MAXI, but it didn't seem to download for me.  It did say that it was for IPads or IPhones, not sure that it's intended for use on a computer.

Probably best to go to a library and submit your resume there.

  • Can anyone recommend a USB CF card reader that will work in my Macbook Pro Retina? My USB card readers for CF cards do not work

At present, the only way I can load photos from a CF card to my new Macbook Pro Retina is by loading them onto an external hard drive via an old PC that can accept either of my USB card readers, then plugging the external hard drive into my MBP. Neither the USB card reader or the cable that comes with the Canon HDSLR camera will transfer photos directly to my MBP. I find it unbelievable that I have to go to a PC to load photos because I can't do it with my new MBP.
Has anyone found a reliable USB CF card reader, or one that connects via thunderbolt or HDMI, at any price, that will work directly with the new MBP Retina?

    This is what we need:
Location photoshoot - we use the Canon EOS 5D  Mk II still camera & the Canon FX100 pro camcorder.
CF cards are: SanDisk Extreme UDMA & SanDisk Extreme Pro UDMA 6 for video (I think they are both Type II) My Mac recognises them both as FAT 32 format
My MBPRetina is on the latest version of Mountain Lion OSX 10.83
the files from the camcorder will transfer to my MacBook Pro Retina directly via the camera's cable but it is quite slow & it means I cannot continue to film while downloading files but this we can live with.
the files from the still camera Canon EOS 5D  Mk II will not transfer directly via the camera's cable - have yet to get the Canon software to download, but via the camera's cable will not help anyway as we need to have the still camera free to keep shooting.
We need to be able to take out the CF card from the first part of the shoot & download the still shots while just on the Macbook's battery power, while we insert a fresh CF card back into the still camera to continue with the next part of the shoot simultaneously (while the first card is downloading.)
The files from the first part of the shoot will be both in RAW (.CR2) & Jpeg format. We just need to quickly transfer the jpegs, then I do a quick sort, batch the best ones as black/white images, & use these in a client slideshow immediately after part 2 of the shoot.
Obviously we need fast data transfer speeds, & rely on the MBP's battery power while on a location shoot.
The card readers I have tried are an older specific CF card reader branded as Palm, & a USB 2 multi card reader branded as Travel Flash. With both readers, the lights on the readers flash on & off, & the MBP recognises the card & the files will even appear both in Finder & in i-Photo, so it starts importing, then aborts with an error message saying:
'The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)'
    & another message saying:
'the disk was not ejected properly'.
So it appears the MBP does read the CF cards but the card readers don't stay connected, no matter what angle I put them on or however many times I re-connect them.
Yes, they are probably cheap & I want to buy a decent one.
    So, in summary:
the card reader needs to work when the MBPR is only on battery power (I read in some forums that some USB card readers aren't so reliable on the laptop's battery power)
the card reader needs to be quite fast. I have read the USB 3 readers won't read CF cards at higher than USB 2 speeds. Is this true? Are the firewire connected ones faster, & if so, are they still reliable on the MBP's battery power?
From research, it appears my problem is associated with my specific model of Mac & platform, being MacBook Retina on Mountain Lion OSX Version 10.83. If any of the recommended card readers have been successful with this, plese let me know.
Thanks heaps for the suggestions so far.

MY QUE IS, WILL IT BE FIXED IF I UPGRADE FROM OSX 10.8.5 TO MAVERICKS? What other options do I have? What can be an approximate cost for fixing this problem?

Of course not. It's a hardware problem, so it can't be fixed by upgrading software. The only option you have got is to take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller.
That error indicates a problem with the hard drive. What you have to do is to make a backup of your files and take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller, so they can confirm that the problem is the hard drive and not the SATA connector, which could be worse.
If it's a hard drive issue, it's not expensive (about $100-200, depending on the hard drive). If it's a SATA connector issue, the whole logic board may have to be replaced.
Note that you can replace the hard drive yourself if you want, but the cost between doing it yourself and taking the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller is similar

Have deleted (secure delete) and reinstalled several times. Got it to open once right after download... Usually crashes/hangs upon attempted start-up, then shows as "Application unresponsive".   Must be forced to quit.
No other audio interfaces or drivers installed that I am aware of. Playback through onboard audio interfaces, sometimes routed to Apple TV via Cat 5 cable, out to receiver via fiber optic SPDIF, or to Panasonic HDTV via HDMI cable through Thunderbolt port.

CD will not eject and MacBook Pro won't restart.

Do a SMC reset, that hopefully should get you booting and while booting, hold the option/alt and trackpad button down at the same time. Once a row of icons appears and if the disk hasn't ejected via the trackpad method, then press the eject key on the keyboard until it does.
Click the arrow to boot up OS X.

  • Will my early 2008 MacBook Pro be able to run OS X Yosemite?

Will my early 2008 MacBook Pro be able to run OS X Yosemite?

I have the same Macbook Pro as you. You should read this Apple page: http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/?cid=wwa-us-kwg-mac-com   While you can install Yosmite, many cool features will not work on pre-2012 models, including: Handoff and Instant Hotspot, AirDrop, AirPlay Mirroring, Peer-to-Peer AirPlay and Power Nap. Additionally, if you have not already upgraded your iPhoto library from iPhoto 8.1.2 (as I have not), I believe you will need to purchase the upgrade after you install Yosemite based on what I read here:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6602872 . Good luck!  If you do or have proceeded with updating to Yosemite, please come back to this thread and share how the experience went. Thanks.

I had issues in 10.4.7 as well as 10.4.8.
My problems occurred at the beginning of 10.4.8, then many users brought light to me using WEP, which was not working that great. I changed my connections to WPA2 and my problem has disappeared. If my problem didn't resolve the way it did, I would have mentioned it the next time I visited an apple store.
The bottom line is that assumptions, complaining, and self diagnostics don't get many people very far and bringing the problem to apple helps them know the incidence of this problem, and helps them develop a reliable solution.
Though some users have reported the "cold shoulder" when reporting Airport problems to apple... I hope you weren't one of them.

Will an early 2011 macbook pro run airplay mirroring on moutain lion

Only thing I would add if I was you, would be to put 8GB RAM into your machine. That will help any issues of being slow, but it should run just fine. Having more ram is always good, and for the price point its well worth it.
I have on 2010 Macbook Pro and it screams. Also on 2011 Macbook Air with no issues.
As for running slow, it could incompatible apps, or apps that havent been updated yet, it would be impossible to pinpoint one thing.
