Will this external drive work with my macbook?

I'm thinking about investing in an external hard drive, is this one compatible with my original Macbook Pro?
http://www.amazon.com/Iomega-Portable-External-Drive-34945/dp/B003D3NDD2
(side question, I've never used an external HD before. Will it just mount on my desktop and I drag and drop files?)
Thanks in advance.

Yes it will work . Most HD are preformated for windows machines so I would definitely reformat. More info: http://db.tidbits.com/article/10307
Might want to think bout partitioning if you have the space. Maybe one partiton is for making a bootable clone with carbon copy cloner. http://www.bombich.com/
I do not believe 10.4 is time machine capable- otherwise I would recommend that as well.
Backing up is a good strategy. Congratulations for making the step!
Yes drag and drop into your empty partition.
Hope this solves your problem

  • Will this hard drive work with my macbook?

I have a late 2006 Core Duo Macbook. I was wondering if I could use this hard drive with my macbook, it's a 7200 rpm 200 gig hard drive. Btw I mean internal not external. Does the macbook have a limit on how big of a hard drive you can use? Would this hard drive work at 7200 rpm in the macbook?

    Hi.
The drive will work perfectly in your macbook. Two weeks ago i was also thinking about buying the Hitachi Travelstar 7k200.
But afterwards i bought this one:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136123
The WD Scorpio 250GB. Off course it´s not as fast as the Travelstar. But for me three things we´re quiet nice about this harddrive: the noise (it doesn´t make anyone) and the price (got it for 150 euro) and it consumes way less power (means better battery life).
    http://www.storagereview.com/WD2500BEVS.sr?page=0%2C7
BTW: It really doesn´t make any noise.
So just in case you´re still unsure whether to buy the Hitachi or anything else. But if you want the fastest notebook HD you can get today, buy the Hitachi.
Have a nice day and fun with your new HD!

  • Will this external drive work??? HELP

    Hi all,
I wanted to know if there is any way that this hard drive works with OS X? I've read reviews that it doesnt work with Macs, but some websites state that its Mac-compatible.
    http://shop3.outpost.com/product/5239637
Anyone have this drive? Is there any way that i can reformat the drive or do something to it, so i can use on my mac?
    Thanks very much everyone.

I use a small USB drive from Maxtor, and it certainly
works as a bootable drive. You can boot from a USB
hard drive if you have an Intel Mac. I have done
    it.
    Daniel
Correct. It will boot from an Intel Mac.

  • Will any external hardrive work with my macbook?

I was wondering if any plug and play hardrive will work with my MacBook? I heard that it needs to be in FAT32 not NTFS. If its in NTFS how do convert it to FAT32?

Pretty much any drive will work as USB and FW are industry standards and not particular to any one platform. I would still seek out a good quality drive and enclosure that features the Oxford 911 or other Oxford chipset for mazimum reliability.
FAT32 is a file format that Macs and PCs have in common and they both can read and write to FAT32 drives. NTFS can be read by Macs, but nt written to. If you plan on using a drive between Macs and PCs and the files on that drive will not be larger than 4GB, then you should choose FAT32. If you will be using this drive only with Macs, then use the HFS+ format.

    Thanks

    Hi Fred,
usually any 3.5" form-factor SATA-connected harddisk works in a Mac Pro.
So I don't see any reason for this harddisk not to work.

  • Will this hard drive work with an HP Probook 4415s

    Hi:
That 160 GB SATA 3.0 HDD should work just fine in your 4415s.

  • Will this hard drive work with my iBook G4?

My iBook's hard drive is in disrepair and I was wondering if this had drive will work. I am pretty sure it will, but I don't want to spend any money until I know for sure. http://www.compusa.com/products/productinfo.asp?productcode=316211&pfp=srch1&tabtype=ts#moreinfo

    Hi TheKMan,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Yes; it says it will work, but I didn't give us the size. I never really recommend anything from CompUSA, especially non-namebrand hardware. I have bought/seen a lot of CompUSAs products that don't work (need to be returned). The only thing that I like about CompUSA is that they have a great return policy.

PS Just wondering; are you going to replace your hard drive? Have you brought your iBook to your local Apple Store/Reseller?

  • Will this Hard Drive work with My Wallstreet?

I was looking at buying a Seagate 60GB UDMA/100 5400RPM 2.5" 9.5mm NBB HDD does anyone know if this will work in my 300 mhz Wallstreet?

    Jean,
If it is the model # ST960822A, it should work fine with the caveat I have read no negative comments on it regarding its use in the Mac. Physical dimension is no problem plus it has the correct ATA/100 interface.
If you are planning to put OSX on the Wallstreet, any drive larger than 8GB requires a partitioning of the HD so the first partition is less than 8GB and reserved for OSX.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106235
I have even read a few reports of OS9 requiring this same partitioning but it seems to be quite rare. I have never experienced it...I have put OS9 all over my Wallstreet's 20GB HD. If you want just one volume of 60GB, install the new HD, initialize it with OS9's Drive Setup using MacOS Extended (HFS Extended) Format, then install OS 9.x. If it fails to boot to the new HD, please post back, although I do not believe you will have any problems.

No, it will not void the warranty. Installing a new drive in a MacBook is a DIY project. Apple even provides a manual on how to do it.

Contact the manufacturer not the seller. Probably the drivers are for Windows. Browsers have little to do with it.
