Will this laptop suit my needs?

Hi my current laptop is not powerful enough. It's a Toshiba Satellite P50-ABT2G22 http://www.pcworld.com/product/pg/1235609190/detail
*Intel® Core™ i7-4700MQ Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.40 GHz)
*8GB DDR3L 1600MHz (4GB + 4GB)
*1.0TB (5400rpm); Hybrid 8G Serial ATA hard disk drive
*2GB GDDR3 NVIDIA ® GeForce® GT 740M with Optimus™ Technology
I make 1080p music videos with a lot of animation and heavy effects, which are usually around 6 minutes long. With my current laptop when about 2-3 minutes of the video is completed, RAM previews and updates in the composition monitor when changing things slow down to the point that i can't really finish the video. Each frame takes like 3 seconds to load. So i guess i need a new laptop.I'm pretty sold on MSI's Dominator pro 888, I just wanted to get some approval. Do you guys think this will get the job done? My only concern is that the processors are very similar. But with 4x more RAM, much better GPU, and the SSD, I'm hoping I'll be able to make my 6 minute, effects heavy, videos extremely smoothly, with no lag. What do you guys think?

4th Generation Intel® Haswell Core™ i7-4800MQ (2.7GHz - 3.7GHz, 6MB Intel® Smart Cache)
NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 880M (8.0GB) GDDR5 PCI-Express DX11 w/ Optimus™ Technology
32GB DDR3 1600MHz [SKU-844AP] (Dual Channel Memory (4x8GB SODIMMS))
1TB HDD + 384GB SSD

There is little way to forecast what will happen until someone tests it.  I just checked on this laptop and while I can overclock the GPU memory (GTX 765M) from 1000 MHz up to 1516 MHz and the results of our PPBM7 GPU assisted MPEG2.DVD test dropped from 78 seconds to to 57 seconds which is an appreciable improvement.  I think that on the GTX 880M they probably had to limit the power consumption for battery only usage to meet the laptop manufacturers specifications.
With this in mind and knowing that any real editing has to be done with the AC power brick all you will have to do is overclock the memory clock on the GTX 880M and you can boost the memory bandwidth accordingly.  It is a very easy operation.  I use EVGA's Precision X and here is what it looks like.
Here is GPU-Z showing the operating memory clock now at 1516 MHz rather than the stock 1002 MHz and accordingly the new memory bandwidth is 97 GB/s rather than my normal specification of 64 GB/s.  If the GTX 880M has the same headroom for overclocking, you will be very happy with it.
But even so check with Eric at ADK on their 8600HW or 8600TB because they are real experts on video editing and they do include lifetime tech support and can really fine tune the configuration.

5400rpm hard drive is below the 7200rpm specification... so editing would be VERY slow and subject to "jerky" editing playback
IF the laptop has a USB3 port (I don't see such mentioned) you could use a 7200rpm USB3 drive for your projects and video files
External eSata or USB3 are both fast enough for video editing... http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1117813 - http://ppbm7.com/index.php/tweakers-page/84-disk-setup

  • Will this laptop support a sata hard drive?

Running an HP Pavilion Model dv4-2145dx.
Will this laptop support an internal 1T SATA Hard Drive?

Yes as long as it is a 9.5 mm thick 2.5 inch wide drive. Some 1 TB 2.5" SATA drives are 12 mm and are designed primarily for Blade Servers, not laptops. This one will work:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152291
The other problem is that 1 TB laptop drives are maximum 5400 rpm. I personally will not use anything but a 7200 rpm drive since they perform much better. I believe the biggest 7200 rpm drive you can get is a 750 gb.

if online number suits my needs, how much does it cost?

An Online Number would cost US$ 18/3 months, US$ 60/year, or - if you first purchase a subscription for calling telephones - US$ 30/year.  You can get an Online Number in Washington state.
To cover your calling to telephones, you can use Skype Credit or purchase a subscription.  If you only need to call telephones in the USA (landlines and mobiles), the Unlimited USA (or Unlimited USA & Canada) subscription at US$ 2.99/month is a good way to go.  The Unlimited World subscription would also cover calling to landlines and mobiles in the USA, but take a look at the list of countries and types of phones in those other countries first.  For most countries, the Unlimited World subscription only covers calling to landline phones - not mobiles.  But if you are only concerned with calling phones in the USA, go with the US-specific subscription.
Another suggestion... set up your Skype account and make those purchases while you are in the US, or somewhere outside of China.  Then you are dealing directly with Skype, instead of having to go through Skype's Chinese partner.  That will probably work better for you in the long run.
    Good luck!

    >AMD Radeon HD 8650G with 4206MB of dedicated system memory
That is either a) nonsense, b) something I've never heard of before (and I do try to stay on top of computing tech), or c) thinly veiled marketing speak for "the display chipset shares memory with the CPU", which is usually not good for performance.
Perhaps it's something new, where AMD's CPU and GPU are closely coupled.
I would be leery of any computer that sports only 100bT Eithernet.  Current systems usually use gigabit (1000bT) Ethernet.
Finally, AMD may make fine processors (they certainly make good GPUs) but I've always liked Intel brand.
If you can believe the specs, it will probably run Photoshop, but I wouldn't bet on good performance.  Is this model particularly affordable?

  • Will this laptop/tablet keep up with photoshop?

    I may buy a lenovo x201 tablet. 8g ram 2.13-GHz Intel Core i7-640LM
I currently use a macbook pro which works well. But I would love to have this tablet to do any line art and things like that.
My worry is I do not want the programs to lag or crash. I just want to make sure my machine can keep up with these powerful programs.
Also If I do get this  I will use it solely for photoshop and illustrator. No other programs (besides maybe google chrome.)
    Will they run properly?
    Thanks!

That machine will handle your Photoshop stuff just fine, but it's not what you want for fast turnover in FCP.

  • Will this laptop run games ok?

Hi, will the asus q200e 11.6"  touchscreen windows 8 laptop with a intel i3 processor run games like call of duty and battlefield, or should I look at the asus K series 15.6" laptop with a AMD 8 processor. The main problem you'll run into with laptops is going to be the GPU. Most laptops have an onboard graphics card due to space limitations, which is fine for normal computer use, but will really struggle when it comes to gaming.
I understand wanting to have a computer that is portable and can cover multiple uses, but gaming is probably the top thing that drastically changes the computers you'll be looking it when it comes to uses for the computer.
My suggestions, if you still want to go with a laptop, would be something online that has dedicated graphics. I'll actually check Best Buy for you and see if there are some reasonably priced gaming laptops. I'll post back later.

Im looking to see if it can run those games on medium/low settings. Thanks!

    Hi DubstepParrot,
Good question!  I took a look over the laptop and also over the games and it would look like they may run, however I don't know how high of settings you may be able to achieve.  The specifications appear to meet the minimum requirements, which is why it's hard to say how far you can take the graphics.
If you do purchase it, I'd certainly advise starting low and measuring your performance.  You can then work your way up to see if improvements to the settings allow you to continue to play successfully.
    Thanks so much!

  • Will Online Number suit my needs?

I am an Australian travelling through Germany and Sweden for one month.
I would like the friends I am visiting to be able to call me (to my ipad or ipod).
Can I get a German phone number (so they can make local calls), or if I get an Online number here in Australia, are my friends charged international rates to call me while I am in Germany?
Is an Online Number the right way to go?
    Any ideas, suggestions?
    Please advise

If the friends who would call an Australian Online Number are outside Australia, they would be charged for an international call.  An Australian Online Number could be useful for your friends or family that are in Australia.  Depending on where they are in Australia, those calls could potentially be considered local calls.
If your German friends are not able to get on Skype, another option may be to get an Online Number in a different European country.  Skype has Online Numbers from other countries where there is no requirement to be a local resident (the UK is one of them).  This would still be an international call for your German friends, but maybe not as expensive to call somewhere else in Europe vs. Australia.

I am looking to purchase an Apple G4/500 to submit graphics etc. across the internet for an independent newspaper. Will this tower suit my needs to start ?

Thank you for helping me consider all of this. I am a novice at this newspaper project so I am unsure of what all I need to consider. I will find out and go from there. I do not have a lot of revenue to start with so when I found a deal, I thought it may be a consideration to start with.

  • Will this model work for college (or should I wait for an udpate)?

Hello everyone! This is my first post--hopefully it is in the right thread!
For the past few years I have been saving up for a MBP for college. Finally I have enough money and was planning to buy one after graduation. Yet, I was completely shocked to find out my family worked together to get me one for Christmas! I am so grateful because this frees up the money I would have spent for other college expenses.
They explained to me that this is a placeholder. I can open it now, or I can wait for a future update.
    Here are the specs:
I just got the upgraded 13" MBP. Next fall I'll be going to college. I do not know what my major will be, but I might be going into some sort of film editing or design.
    Here are the specs:
    13-inch: 2.66GHz
    Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB Memory
    320GB hard drive
    SD card slot
    Built-in battery (10 hours)
    NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics
I am not quite sure of my major for the next few years but I know there is a possibility that I will go into film editing or design.
I know a 15" would be more powerful, but I really want the portability of the 13" for college and an Apple Genius agreed. Yet, I'm worried that the processor and graphics card isn't up to snuff. I don't know much about specs--will the computer suit my needs or should I take it back and wait for a 13" update?

Thank you very much! That is my point exactly--I have no idea what the next 4 years will be like and it is driving me crazy to try to find the perfect Mac that will suit all my needs. It took me 3 years to save up for this, and I'd prefer a laptop that could last me for at least 4.
Luckily my family helped me a lot, but I am just so nervous! I don't want to have to buy another. I'm not a big spender, but when I do make a purchase, I want it to be the best for my needs.

  • Can this laptop run After effects well?

    Hello,
    I have acer aspire 5742g laptop, i5 480m(max 2.93ghz), Geforce 540m, 6gb ram and slow 5400rpm HDD
After effects runs quite slow if I do something more advanced so I think its time for upgrade.
I found this quite cheap for specs it provides
    Asus N56JR
    Intel® Core™ i7-4700HQ Processor (6 MB Cache, 2.4 Ghz)
    8 GB DDR3 - 1600 MHz
    GeForce GTX 760M GDDR5 2GB
1TB HDD 5400RPM(I will buy ssd later)
    Notebooks & Ultrabooks - N56JR - ASUS
Will this laptop be able to handle after effects good enough?

That would be better but you could use a bunch more ram. After Effects is a professional app with tons of capabilities. The more complex the project the higher the demands are on the system. If you want AE to run quickly when you work on extremely complex projects and you want to run on a laptop then you need a professional workstation grade laptop not a consumer model. Dell and HP make them, Apple makes the MacBookPro R which becomes a workstation grade laptop when you max it out. Simply put, buy the most powerful laptop with the most memory you can afford, make sure the company provides excellent customer service and get a long warrantee - or take your chances with a consumer grade laptop.

    Hi,
Since you already have one copy activated the serial number must be logged in your account details - I would first check that the one logged and the one you are attempting to enter are the same.
You can check your account details by going to www.adobe.com and clicking on Manage Account. You need to sign in with your Adobe Id and then click on View All under Plans & Products. Next click on View your products and after a while it should produce your list.
If there is a problem with the serial number, only Adobe can help you there (we are just users). Please see the response in this thread
