Will this Samsung SSD be as fast as apples default Flashdrive if mounted in 2013 mac pro.

Hello,
Will replacing the default SSD of a late 2013 Mac pro with this Samsung  SSD decrease performance speed?
I plan on getting this one to get more space, it will be just as fast as the default ssd, right?
SSD Samsung SSD 840 EVO Series 120GB 2.5 " TLC SATA600 - Basic
Thank you!
D.

The EVO 128GB has been tweaked to be almost as fast (pre-EVO were not and while slow/slower were still a significant boost).
Price of 250GB EVO is $139. Get that instead IF you have pre-2013. Then whether or not system or for data or scratch, and might want $99 PCIe SATA 6G controller.
SSD blades for 2013 nMP 6,1 upgrades should eventually, Samsung plans to offer retail kits, as will OWC and others.
Crucial too. And they have their newest 550M.
Pricing on 500GB EVO $279.
btw, 128GB is probably not a good idea - too small when you only have one, and that would be a downgrade from the default 256GB.

  • Will the late 2013 Mac Pro boot from an external drive (4Tb, USB 3) with a cloned Win7 x64 partition on it?

    Hello all,
I ordered a CTO Mac Pro for heavy rendering and animating work, and I am planning on using bootcamp to install a windows partition (for 3DsMax). As I am now using a HP Elitebook 8770W that has several valuable files and projects on it, I have bought a Seagate 4Tb external Desktop Drive that uses USB 3.0 to use as a backup drive. Now, as I saw that Bootcamp Assistant only supports installing a x64 version of Windows 8, my question is:
Will a late 2013 Mac Pro using bootcamp assistant boot from an external USB drive with a cloned partition running x64 win7? Or do I really have to buy Windows 8 and install that to my internal SSD, and then use the migration assistant to copy over my projects?
    Thanks!

Posted? or found in new builds?
BCA should really just pull whatever the latest drivers are when run.
If it is with how it partitions and sets up nMP and its partition for Windows that is another matter and makes sense.
Some people want UEFI native booting in Windows, and my experieince with that on PCs has been that it boots faster and runs well, but has different partitions that it wants. For one thing, there is now a backup "system reserved" partition, just as Apple GUID has some volume information blocks and backup and areas that were once optional (and if format erase was not able to, it would not create one) are now mandatory.
Windows 8.1 is req'd, reason a backup should be a big must - is it might overwrite and use another OS's  partition table entries.  Especially when doing UEFI install.
There was something about which linux OS was safe and how they would each add entries in the table, but one would not place nice.  That one had to be done first or not at all.

  • When will Creative Cloud apps be optimized to take advantage of the 2013 Mac Pro?

When will Creative Cloud apps be optimized to take advantage of the 2013 Mac Pro?

Yes, they all should if it's Peer to peer, or if any Router, Swith, Hub in the mix also supports GigE, & Jumbo Packet support is a big plus, but Computer to Compter should work with Jumbo Packets methinks.

  • How do I get rid of random screen flicker and black screen when using a late 2013 Mac Pro with a 4k Samsung 55" Display?

I have a new Mac Pro late 2013 and a 55" 4k Samsung display connected using an HDMI cable. For the most part the display is amazing, however, I get occasional screen flicker and black outs. Can anyone help? Could I possibly have a bad video card?

4K displays take more than half the bandwidth of a ThunderBolt Bus. So you may get better results if you are careful to place them on their own Bus. This article has the explanation of which port is using which Bus:

  • Enclosure 2013 Mac Pro SSD

is there any device (enclosure, housing, hub, adapter, cable, etc) which allows me to take the SSD out of my cylinder Mac Pro and connect it to an other device (MacBook Pro, iMac, ...) over USB, Thunderbolt or what ever?
i found a lot of those cases where you can put in a PCIe SSD (similar as used as in the Mac Pro) but the interface doesn't fit (wrong amount of pins).
So does anyone know one of those devices working for that SSD?
    Kindest regards, Mathias

Apple intended the original limited-size internal SSD in the black cylinder Mac Pro as a Boot & Applications Drive. It was assumed that most Users would place their files on other External drives. If you needs are modest (limited to one or two drives) you can use USB-3 drives, all others need to commit to ThunderBolt drives.
There are three different popular types of SSD drives/interfaces:
    1) The first on the market had a SATA interface, and were packed in a 2.5-in "can" like a notebook Hard Drive.
    2) The second were "stick" form factor and had a direct mini SATA interface. These were used in certain MacBooks.
    3) The third are also "stick" form factor, and have a direct mini PCIe interface. These are rare, and enclosures that support this interface are rarer still. These are used in some current MacBooks and the late-2103 black cylinder Mac Pro.
To re-purpose the one currently inside a Mac Pro, you would need BOTH:
    a) A better replacement that actually has the required mini PCIe interface.
    b) a thunderbolt or USB-3 enclosure with a Mini PCIe interface inside.

  • Will late 2013 Mac Pro boot from MacBook Pro (8,1)?

I have a MacBook Pro which (until the delivery of my new 16 gb RAM Mac Pro) has been my main machine. When it comes I'd like to put my MBkP into Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode and use my Mac Pro as the CPU (et al) for my work. (In this way I'll have the portability of my MBkP when needed and the speed of the Mac Pro when in the office without having to change / keep track of files, etc.) I have an Dell monitor which I'll connect to via Thunderbolt to DVI as I do now from the MBkP. My MBkP has all the latest updates (eg: Sys 10.9.1 and all other updates).
My question: will this work? Or does the Mac Pro have some minimum system / hardware requirements which won't allow't to boot from the MBkP?
I await your helps with gratitude....

Think that is odd, until there is a new unified OS build for everyone, with new hardware like these there will be new builds every couple of weeks usually. 10.9.0 was long before they were ready for more than testing.
The Mac Pro 2010 went through that, even the 1,1 2006 had about three different builds before a new update for OS X existed.
OEM builds really are just that and not suitable the way retail is. I don't know how they manage pushing updates out now that it is through the App Store other than those are suitable for multiple Macs. ie, IF I have a new nMP sitting here and I 'goof' and need to reinstall the OS and I was negligant in making a backup with  T.M. or a clone, and I have to do a net-install (no Mac Pro up till now had the feature) what build gets pushed to download for me? I would hope of course it is the build I had or later but until 9.2 is out...
Which is long winded way of saying, before you make changes, before you do like someone else did couple days ago and migrate from an older MacBook Pro - and carried over out of date and  incompatible versions, and even drivers no one wants to see - make sure you have a double backup safety net.

  • Will this HDD + SSD combo be okay for my MacBook Pro?

Hi all, I have a late 2011 unibody MacBook Pro and my hard drive has decided to fail on me. I've had a warning in Disk Utility for about a week telling me that the disk has a hardware problem and needs to be replaced.
I've had nothing but trouble where hard drives are concerned after losing a Seagate 1TB external and a Seagate Momentus XT internal due to hardware problems. So with this in mind I thought I'd check whether I've got my mind set on the right thing before I buy a replacement.
Now, my SuperDrive died earlier this year and whilst trying to repair it I decided to pull the whole thing out and get rid of it so I have the big space inside where I discovered I could replace it with a OWC Data Doubler and HDD. I've had a scout round the web and been through a fair few reviews on comparable drives and I'm hoping the two drives I've picked out will suffice before I manage to kill any more.
First I'd like to put a Samsung 840 EVO120GB SSD in the main bay to boot my OS and applications from. Then I'd like to put a Western Digital Black 750GB in the second bay for general storage. I've done a bit of homework and I think these should work fine but I would really appreciate if you guys could verify this and if there's any advice to go with it.
    I thank you in advance.
    James

There are lots of postings warning not to use WD drives.  They are particularly incompatible with Mavericks.
Check out OWC (macsales.com) and Crucial.com.  These vendors are often mentioned for reliable 3rd-party parts.  Each sells their own brand of SSDs.  A 120 GB SSD is going for $150.
For the hard drive consider a one TB SSD-Hybrid disk. Google "Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive SATA 6Gbps 64MB Cache 2.5-Inch”.  It will be much faster than a standard drive and costs only $100.

  • Late 2013 Mac Pro and Samsung 4K U32D970Q Problems

I'm at my wits end. I really wish 4K displays were truly plug-n-play with new Macs.
I purchased a Samsung 4K U32D970Q from Amazon due to a couple positive reviews from users stating it works with their 2013 MP. It's a beautiful screen, much better uniformity than the LG 4K I sent back but it has a huge problem with random flickering. And by flickering I mean while watching videos, scrolling a website quickly the screen distorts and "blinks/flickers" momentarily then goes back to normal. I've tried a different DisplayPort>mDP cable along with the provided cables and same issue. The monitor is running SST at 60Hz.
You can see a video I made showing the blinking/flicker http://youtu.be/Rj8QwgzogqQ
This is actually my 2nd monitor as I did an exchange with Amazon same issue. I tried to contact Samsung and what a joke that support is. I get a guy who said he has no idea then sent me a firmware update list... that hasn't been updated since last March. No help.
I've already reset pram and smc, tried different TB ports without any luck.
Is it just wise to stick to the officially supported, and very expensive, list of 4K monitors or go QHD and wait for the 2016 MP for true 4K+ support?

I took your advice to setup a Genius appointment but they stopped me at higher tech support over the phone. I was told that because my current NEC 1920x1200 display, and the LG 4K cinema I returned, don't have any issues it's not my D300 gfx cards. He said bringing it in would only verify that so it'd be a waste of time.
I was then told to return it, we can't officially guarantee 3rd party compatibility etc etc. So sadly my saga with the Samsung is coming to a close. It's seriously the most beautiful screen I've ever used (no dead pixels, only slight contrast lost at the extreme edges but no worse than my aging NEC) which is unfortunate because going back to a non-4K is depressing.
I'm either going to pick up a QHD NEC or a refurbished Dell 4k 32in from Amazon since they have them used for about $1200 right now. Thanks again to everyone for the help.

  • Xserve RAID will not mount to my Mac Pro

We just moved the Xserve Raid to another Mac Pro with 2x3 GHz Quad-Core and 16 GB of Ram. I installed the Xserve card, plugged the cables into the tower and into the Xserve, powered it on, installed the updated Raid Admin, but it wont mount. I checked disk utility and I dont see it there either. The lights on each drive are an amber color so I know something is not right. I wanted to find out what step am I missing, if I am missing some software, if pulling the drives out before moving it caused a problem, or any other suggestions. Any help would be greatly appreciative. Thanks!

If you're not worried about the contents of the drives that a good start because I don't think that's recoverable. What does RAID Admin say about all the other components? Are the controllers green? Technically the yellow lights on the drive are supposed to signal drive issues but I don't know why all the drives would suddenly be an issue without a deeper issue.
Fire up RAID Admin and see what's going on - you're going to need it to delete and try and recreate RAIDs anyway.
    Good luck,

I have a late 2008 Mac Pro Quad Core 2x2.8 Intel Xeon with Lion 10.7.5… do I need Maverick and will this hardware support the Airplay Mirroring?

It doesn't mention anything about a Mac Pro. So no.

If your computer did support it, you would still need 10.8 or 10.9 for Airplay to work.

  • Help -- I have a Lenovo Samsung SSD MZ7PC256HAFU on HP laptop -- ssd firmware will not update

    1.  i tried updating the SSD firmware by doing it with the samsung magician software --- it does not see the SSD
    2.  then i tried doing it with the Lenovo iso found here:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-69806
this supposed ISO file was not recognized by my main ISO burner.   another burner worked but my HP laptop still will not bood from this ISO dvd.
    3.   then i called Samsung.   they  told me that because this Samsung SSD is Lenovo OEM branded, that Samsung software will not work any more to update the firmware.
    Anybody?    Thanks !

You will probably have to find a Lenovo branded system (laptop).
Attach the Lenovo branded (samsung)  SSD.
Boot using the Lenovo branded ISO.
Return SSD back to your HP system.

hello everyone. I have recently installed a Samsung SSD (solid state hard drive) into my destop PC. For some reason Lightroom does not see it ? So i cannot ingest photos from it, or copy photos from a card to it. It is not listed as a drive option. LR sees every other drive. My computer sees it fine, so i was able to create a catalogue there. Im running windows 8.1. Any ideas ? I will also add that this drive became corrupt and was repaired by Samsung. Maybe they didn't do a very good job.. ..

Yes pretty much that, but to clarify sorry
    Opened Lightroom.
    Create new catalogue.
This opened the Windows 8 file explorer window and Windows recognises the drive. So I was able to create a catalogue there and save.
I then inserted my memory card into my card reader which LR recognised. I selected it, chose all the photos within and then navigated to the right side of the Lr import dialogue window to locate this problem drive as on this occasion i want the RAW files on the same drive as the lrcat. However all my other drives are listed but not this Samsung SSD.
In addition this Samsung SSD is not listed a drive to import from in the same dialogue window.

I want to add apple tv via hdmi connection , and I already have ethernet input of tv for my viera cast connection, which gets Amazon prime.  Wireless connection is APE base and APX,  Want to add
apple tv to get Netflix so I can cancel my xfinity premium channels.  Will this set up work.  p.s as you can tell I am a Mac novice.

Providing you have a free HDMI port on the TV and the location you would put the Apple TV will allow it to connect to your network, you should be good to go.

  • Newest Mac Pro does NOT work with CC14 - Will Adobe address this or not?

I have a Mac Pro late 2013 - the "trash can" - and when I tried installing Premiere CC14, it crashed multiple times before even completing the program's initial bootup. I had to install CS6 just to get operable, though this does not help me open the CC14 projects I have inherited. I have a colleague who uses a $1.5K laptop, and it works logarithmically faster and better with CC14 than my $4K new Mac Pro.  I have all the Adobe permissions set to "Read/Write" and it shows absolutely no speed improvements over a much less expensive iMac.  The CUDA feature is worthless unless Adobe develops a way for it to take advantage of the hardware configuration of the Mac Pro... And I'm having a hard time finding anything resembling an official statement suggesting this is anywhere close to a reality.  I have many After Effects plug ins, and while yes: They are 3rd party plug ins, these are not just electives - They are part of my arsenal that my loyal clients have come to expect.
For 15 years I have used After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator, all 15 of them on a Mac. In all that time I have NEVER experienced this kind of vagueness, finger pointing, and dodgy avoidance.  There seems to be an allergy to making an announcement that anything resembling a coordinated effort is going to happen.
Why would I buy "the fastest" Mac if Adobe didn't work with it?  MAC STORE staff didn't seem to think this was going to be an issue... Yet I can't find any official date as to when CC14 is projected to work with AMD architecture.
I'm feeling a lot like I did when Mac juked us with FCP-7 to FCP-X "upgrade.'   Et tu, Adobe?
    -JOHN BEYER
(PS - Yes I had Adobe Creative Cloud assistance help me troubleshoot)

No offense meant, but did you come here to ask for help, or are you just complaining?  Because it seems an awful lot like the latter...
    AlphaJB4 wrote:

So does CC2014 work on your Mac Pro or not?  The laptop doesn't "work logarithmically faster..." than your Mac Pro if the software isn't working to begin with.  Hyperbole, much?
The CUDA feature is worthless unless Adobe develops a way for it to take advantage of the hardware configuration of the Mac Pro...
CUDA isn't available on the new Mac Pro.  OpenCL is.  If you have the CUDA preference panel installed due to another piece of software putting it there, you're better served by deleting it.  It's not going to help you at all on the new Mac.  It may, in fact, cause problems.
Pr CC2014 works fine with OpenCL on the new Mac.  Ae doesn't, but Adobe has never said Ae does or would.  Anything you do in Ae is going to be CPU-bound.  If Pr is crashing, then it likely means you have something else on your system that's mucking things up.  Did you recover your user directory with something like Time Machine when you installed your new Mac?  Was your user directory originally on some other Mac?  What happens if you create an entirely new user from scratch, without restoring the home directory, and then try to kick Pr into gear?  Does it run?
Provide some details and perhaps someone can help.

i couldn't find any info about this combo...
    thanks in advance

"Please provide some background on what you are hoping to accomplish by installing these cards."
    Hi Grant
i'm hoping to give a fresh breath of air to a rather old system.
currently I have the ATI x1900 installed, 12 GB of RAM and OSX 10.6.8
my system works rather fine, but does not run FCPX, or Resolve, and could probably perform better on other applications I use. I plan to upgrade my system but it won't happen before new Mac Pros are available to order.
and the cost of these two cards isn't too high, even for an avarage bump in performance.
6-8 more months of work at better render times and maybe with resolve lite (even at very basic performance)
    would be perfect.
    enough info?
    maybe just the GT120?
    thanks
    hector.
