Will this Time Capsule (MD032LL/A) back up two macs in Mavericks?

Hi,
I would like to know if I can use this 2011 Time Capsule to create Time Machine backups of my two MacBook Pros, both of which are running Mavericks 10.9.4. Thank you!

Yes. The process isn't any more complicated than setting up Time Machine on each computer individually.

  • I recently purchased a new Mac Pro and have been trying to back it up on my Time Capsule for the first time.  However, it says there is no available disk space. This time capsule was used with my old Mac Pro that had a Home vault open on it.

The time capsule was used with my prior Mac Pro laptop that unfortunately had the home vault active on it.
My new Mac Book Pro does not have home vault open.  But I am unable to back up my new MAC pro laptop because it says there is not enough storage space available.  Therefore, t there any way to just completely delete all the old backup data out of my Time Capsule from my prior Mac Laptop?
When I go into the time capsule - it shows me NOTHING as being in the backup datas.  So, I don't know where to begin to delete all the old data off the
time Capsule and start with a completely empty machine.

Therefore, t there any way to just completely delete all the old backup data out of my Time Capsule from my prior Mac Laptop?
Here is how to do this:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Disks icon at the top of the AirPort Utility window
Click the Disks tab below the icons
    Click Erase
The "Quick Erase" option will only take a moment or two
Now you can backup your MacBook Pro. If you connect an Ethernet cable from the MBP to one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC, the first backup will go 3-5 times faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will only take a few minutes

  • Time Capsule--can I back up Two different Laptops on the Time Capsule?

It's just about that easy. I just got the Time Capsule. I backed up my MacBook Pro. Now I'd like to use the same Time Capsule to back up my wife's MacBook. Can this be done? If so, how? I keep getting the failed message from the Time Machine Backup.
    Thanks for the help.
    Dave

No question that it can be done. I just got a new MacBook a couple of weeks ago and I am backing it up to our TC alongside my son who has been using it since last Sept. with his MacBook. There was no problem setting it up. I just clicked on TimeMachine in the Dock and it asked me where I wanted to back my files up to. The only choice was the existing Time Capsule. I clicked and away it went. I took the advice of others and connected my Mac directly to the TC for the initial backup instead of relying on the wireless. It only took a couple of hours.
What specific error do you get?

  • Will this Time Capsule setup work?

I am considering purchasing a Time Capsule, but I have a unique situation and I want to make sure it will work as I expect.
Currently I have AT&T DSL, and use a Linksys wireless router for my minimal home network (one laptop). Right now everything works with no problems, but I am looking for more functionality.
I have an old three story house, office on the third floor, but bad phone line to the office. The problem is in the wall so it would be expensive to fix, OK for voice. DSL comes in on the first floor where my main stereo is located.
I want the Time Capsule for extra storage, back-up, but also wireless printing to the office.
I am thinking of getting an Airport Express for the first floor and hooking it up to the DSL Modem as the primary wireless point and to the stereo w/ AirTunes. The Time Capsule would be placed in the office connected to the printer and extra hard drive, but it will be serving as a wireless bridge(?), not connected directly to the DSL modem. Will I still get the full functionality from the Time Capsule, or will something be missing?
Also I have to run a long wire from the phone jack on the first floor to the stereo, would it be better for the long wire to be the phone line, ethernet cable, or the audio connection?

In principle it should work, but ...
    • I am not sure if you can extend the WLAN between a LinkSys and the APE; maybe you want to borrow one and test this first!
    • if it is not working, you might want to consider replacing the LinkSys with either an AP express or extreme (depending on the wall construction - wood or stone)
    • remember that the extra disc at the AP extreme that you are describing, is likely not to show up in time machine !
If you can, I would go for 1 AP extreme and 2 AP express, so in each floor you have a connectino - this is probably still cheaper than ripping up walls.
    Good luck

  • Time Capsule remotely using Back To My Mac with iPhone.

I'm connecting my Time Capsule remotely using iCloud - Back To My Mac. It's possible to make the same connection using my iPad 2 or my iPhone?

What is the exact model of your modem?
Do you use pppoe authentication in the modem.. If so you can just bridge it and use pppoe in the TC without any issues.
Apple cannot be expected to fix every modem and every ISP out there. Unfortunately networking is done is so many ways that it is impossible.. the ISP is actually the one who should help but they generally are useless.. or want you to pay for support.
Yes, send pics of the configuration.
Are you getting a public IP from your ISP? If not then none of this will work.
How are you testing access? You cannot test from inside the LAN .. you must use a Mac computer from internet access that is not firewalled.
Remember this is a two way street.. both ends have to have full access.
If the BTMM approaches doesn't work do try it manually..
There is clear instructions on the web to setup access.
    See http://gigaom.com/2009/05/14/access-your-time-capsule-over-the-internet/
You don't need to do the fancy scripting.. just setup your modem router to forward port 548 to the TC.
You don't give wan access in this case... you are accessing on LAN.
But you do need to use some more security than normal TC password.. ie use disk password.
This is proof of concept.. if this works then BTMM should work if you get all the settings right.

  • Can I (or How can I) chain two Time Capsules on one network for two Macs?

Currently we have one dual-band TC connected to our cable modem. Mac 1 backs up to it. I also have an original TC (one-band) that I would set to 5GHz dedicated for Mac 2.
Would this plan work and provide Backup and Internet to both machines?
    Cable Modem --->TC1--->TC2
Mac 1 would connect to TC1 for Time Machine function and Internet Access.
Mac 2 would connect to TC2 for Time Machine function and Internet Access.
    (---> = Ethernet cable)

No changes needed on TC1, but you may need to use AirPort Utility - Manual Setup to note a few of the settings on TC1, such as the exact type of security that it is using now since that information will be used to configure TC2.
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on TC1 to the WAN port (circle icon) on TC2*. Open AirPort Utility - Manual Setup and TC2 should appear. If not, you'll need to "hard reset" TC2 by holding in the reset button until the amber light begins to blink more quickly, hold another few seconds when you see this and then release
Click the Time Capsule tab below the icons to name your device, assign a device password and set Time Zone settings
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as TC1 network**
No check mark needed next to Allow this network to be extended unless you plan to add more wireless device to extend the network
    Radio Mode = 802.11n only 5 GHz
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same setting as TC1
Wireless Password = Same password as TC1
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and let TC2 restart. Then power down the entire network. Power up the modem first, then TC1, then TC2, then each device one at a time. Allow a moment or two for each device to fully power up before you start the next.
*When the TC is in Bridge Mode, it really makes no difference which port you use to connect, as they all behave the same. I use the WAN port as a habit for connections like this so that I know at a glance where the connection is coming from. But, you could connect to one of the LAN ports on TC2 if you prefer.
**Assign a different name than TC1 if you want to log on separately to the network that TC2 provides
Be sure to setup Mac2 to backup to TC2 for Time Machine and you should be all set.

  • Can't connect to Time Capsule (TC) via "Back To My Mac" (BTMM)

For some unknown reason I can NOT connect to my TC via BTMM. It usually shows up in finder, however it's not there now. I have a Green light in the BTMM preference, and a connection to the internet.
    Any ideas or guesses?
    Thanks

  • My time capsule is not backing up my macbook.  Password issue.  My other mac mini connected wirelessly works fine and backsup correctly.

My Time capsule is is backing up my Mac Mini just fine, however, my Macbook keeps asking me for the password and it does not like any of the passwords I use.  I have since used a pen to reset my Time Capsule and it reset all the network passwords for all 11 devices I had linked to it, however, it did not resolve the issue of my backup issue.  Ironically, the macbook still connects wirelessly with my macbook so I can surf the web with it, however, it does not backup on that same device because it must have a different password... Not sure what to do since my Mac Mini is backing up successfully.  I must have chosen a different password and it saved to that device, is there a way to display the Time Capsule password on my mac mini so I can attemp to use that on my macbook?

What is the current setting of the TC disk access? It has three main levels, device password, disk password and user names and passwords. If you have it set to the last you will need to create a new username and password for the MacBook or recover what you were using.
Have you ever done a backup to the TC via the MacBook?
    What OS does it run?
The default password if you did not set anything is public.
Try manually mounting the TC disk on the MacBook and see if that allows TM to find it.
There is a lot of useful setup and troubleshooting info here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
I would install the widget.. A1 and do a full reset of TM in the laptop, A4. As well as verify if you have already done a backup.. A5.
Basic setup of TC for TM is explained here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Recovery of passwords is possible but should not be necessary.

  • HT1178 I bought Time Capsule specifically to back up my computer at work. Only my computer. I completed the steps the best of my knowledge but I got the message, "This device & its network services will be temporarily unavailable. Are you sure you want to

I bought Time Capsule specifically to back up my computer at work. Only my computer. There are many computers within my department. I completed the steps the best of my knowledge but was unsure of which option to click. I clicked "I want to create a new wireless network". At the onset the instructions said I needed to connect with an ethernet cable, which I did. But I have no desire to connect to the internet, print from it, or have others access. I did deselect guest options, and I did put in passwords. But at the end of the process I got the message, "This device & its network services will be temporarily unavailable. Are you sure you want to continue."
I was worried this would shut me down and I wouldn't be able to continue to work. I don't necessarily need to connect wirelessly. It is connected via ethernet cable from machine to device.
Can you advise me how to continue? Did I choose the wrong options?

I bought an external hard drive called "Seagate Backup Plus" From the Apple store to back up everything on my computer and anything new on my computer. It came with Time Machine. The external hard drive disk had 1 or 2 Terabytes. Time Machine says "next backup: When disk is connected." "Oldest backup: July 2, 2014." & Also "Latest back July, 2."

Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Wait a few minutes
Push the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
See if the Time Capsule will back up now
If not, see #C12 in this document:

My Time Capsule has stopped backing up.
I have an Apple Time Capsule which backs up by wireless. For the last 3 days it has not backed up. I get this message:
"The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."
I have gone into Mac Help and followed this down to stage 4:
under shared it lists my time capsule and my husband's iMac - both use the time machine but we have switched his off temporarily.  Clicking on my Time capsule I get "Connected" and "Sharepoint" - I didn't have to enter connect or password
I don't understand stage 5: how and where do I select the disk or volume that contains Time Machine backups ?  How do I know which it is? My disk utility lists 160.04 TOSHIBA MK... with sub-heading Macintosh HD.  It also lists (with a "CD" icon) HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS22N
Under stage 6, how and where do I Locate your backup ? I try dragging my Time capsule from Finder to the Disk Utility side panel but it won't go.  What is my computer's name?
Please someone help!  I'm completely stumped.
    Thanks,
    Maggie
    Mac Help says:
If you back up to a Time Capsule or network disk:
Open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and slide the switch to Off.
    Open Time Machine preferences
Open Disk Utility, which is in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
    Open Disk Utility
Make sure the Time Capsule or network disk is turned on and available.
Open a Finder window, select your Time Capsule or network disk in the Shared section of the sidebar, and click Connect. If necessary, enter your user name and password.
On the Time Capsule or network disk, select the disk or volume that contains Time Machine backups. Depending on how your Time Capsule is set up, there may be one or more disks or volumes.
Locate your backup, and drag it to the Disk Utility sidebar. You can identify your backup by looking for your computer’s name in the backup’s filename.

  • How do I transfer data from one time capsule to new time capsule when TC backs up an iMac and Power Book

How do I transfer data from one time capsule to new time capsule when TC backs up an iMac and MacBookPro

It is generally better to leave the old backups and start again.. unless there is something you particularly need.
But if you desperately want all the old backups you have to copy the sparse bundles.. this will take very long time as it must copy via the computer..

Take particular note of the initial comments.. ie before you read how to do it.. don't do it.
