  • Will this work? I can't seem to get a straight answer.

Ok, So I am probably buying my friends Iphone and I have a question.
I currently have a regular phone with a 3G SIM card (no data plan at all, in fact if it makes a difference I am on a Familytalk plan)
Anyway, since it is a 3G sim card, will it work in an Iphone without having to buy any Iphone Data plan as long as I don't use Edge/3G?
The reason I ask is because I really want to stay on Apple's good side and I dont want to... well I'm not going to say the bad word on the Apple Forums, but it rhymes with Shmailbreak.

I have used my iPhone with my wife's SIM card from her Samsung with no data plan.
    BUT
At some point AT&T will notice you are using an iphone without a data plan and make you pay for it. There is no way around it. Even if you go around apple, it doesn't change the fact, that if you use AT&T and an iPhone, at some point they will force you to have a dataplan.
There may even be something in the TOS that will let them back charge you as it is very clear that an iPhone requires a data plan on AT&T.

  • Can I have iTunes music on my SSD and an external drive? How will this affect syncing to iOS devices?

I don't have space to keep my entire iTunes library on my SSD. Currently I have my iTunes library split as follows:
SSD: Contains a subset of music, apps, books, etc. New items usually get added here.
External HD: Contains all of my music and iTunes media (including apps... so many apps). It's usually missing the most recent items added, due to the fact I don't plug it in so often.
I ran into a problem maintaining these two libraries earlier while syncing my iPhone. When I tried to sync the iPhone with the SSD library, it would delete apps off of my phone because they weren't contained in the iTunes library there, even though I had the same base .itl file for both the SSD and the external libraries.
What I want to do is set it up so that I maintain a core of music on my SSD and the stuff I don't listen to as often on my external hard drive. I also want to keep all the space hogs (movies, apps, etc) on the external as well. However, I want this to appear as one seamless iTunes library and I DON'T EVER WANT ANYTHING DELETED FROM MY PHONE WHEN I SYNC IT. I want to be able to sync my phone without worrying that apps will be deleted and I'll have to restore them from iCloud and reset all the settings, sign in, etc. Right now I am backing up to iCloud, but my understanding is that iTunes will still delete things from my phone if they are not available in the library.
My question: How do I accomplish this? I have a lot of metadata in my iTunes library that I don't want to lose (playcounts, ratings, etc).
I currently have this:   SSD: .itl file pointing to music on the SSD, a mixture of iTunes media (some that I want easily accessible, some I don't)
External drive: .itl file pointing to music on the external drive, all of my iTunes media (except for anything I may have added to the SSD)
I think I need this:       SSD: .itl file pointing to music on the SSD and the external, music that I listen to often
External drive: music that I don't listen to often, things that take up a lot of space
My thought process is that I will need to somehow move music from the external to the SSD while maintaining the pointers so that iTunes knows where they are. For this I have unchecked "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and "Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder When Adding To Library," and to maintain the pointers and move the songs, I'm thinking of using Doug's Applescripts for "Relocate Selected:" http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected
Once I have the songs split across these drives, I'm going to copy the .itl file from the external to the SSD and boot it up to see if it works.
Two things: 1.) Will this approach work? Can I maintain my library across separate drives this way and have it be seamless? I understand I won't be able to access the media on my external hard drive when it is not plugged in (duh), but...
2.) Will it affect syncing? When my external isn't plugged in, will iTunes try and delete things from my iPhone? It should still be able to "see" them, it just won't be able to access them. Will I have to turn off syncing apps while syncing with my external device unplugged?
Thanks very much for any help and insight! It is greatly appreciated as I deal with limited storage space and an expanding iTunes library.

This is all just a partial answer since details will depend upon how you want to do it.

You'll need to get it all onto one iTunes collection on your Mac Pro, then sync the devices to that.  iTunes only lets you transfer purchases from a device, otherwise you have to use third party software.
I guess you could also look into getting iTunes Match.

I am being asked to upgrade to iCloud Drive but indications are that I will not be able to access up to date details on any of my documents on my Mac without going into iCloud first.  Have I got this interpretation right or can I save changes to access the new versions on my iMac?

    That is Apple's statement:
Using iWork with iCloud Drive - Apple Support
    Options for iWork customers
You can upgrade to iCloud Drive today if you want to keep your documents up to date in iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, and you want to use the iWork web apps on iCloud.com and the Share via iCloud feature.
You can upgrade to iCloud Drive later if you want to keep your documents up to date with your apps on iOS 7 or earlier and OS X Mavericks or earlier.
    Upgrade to iCloud Drive today
To access the most recent versions of your documents from a Mac with OS X Mavericks or earlier, you’ll need to go to iCloud.com and access Pages, Numbers, and Keynote from there. On a PC, you can install iCloud for Windows and set up iCloud Drive.
If you upgrade to iCloud Drive now:
Your documents will keep up to date across devices with iOS 8, Macs with OS X Yosemite, PCs with iCloud for Windows, and iCloud.com.
Your documents will no longer keep up to date on devices with iOS 7 and Macs with OS X Mavericks or earlier.
You’ll be able to use the iWork web apps on iCloud.com.
You’ll be able to use the Share via iCloud feature with iOS 8, OS X Yosemite, and iCloud.com.
Documents you previously shared via iCloud will be accessible to collaborators.
    Upgrade to iCloud Drive later
Note that until you upgrade your iCloud account to iCloud Drive, you won’t be able to use the iWork web apps on iCloud.com or the Share via iCloud feature.     If you don’t upgrade to iCloud Drive at this time:
Your documents will keep up to date across devices with iOS 8 and across devices with iOS 7 and Macs with OS X Mavericks or earlier.
You won’t be able to use the iWork web apps on iCloud.com.
You won’t be able to use the Share via iCloud feature.
Documents you previously shared via iCloud won’t be accessible to collaborators until you upgrade to iCloud Drive.

  • HT1212 Hi, one of my daughters friends tried to access her ipod causing it to become disabled; i do not want her to lose all her photos, she accesses my itunes account which is on ICLOUD, will she lose all her data - can this be fixed?

Hi, one of my daughters friends tried to access her ipod causing it to become disabled; i do not want her to lose all her photos, she accesses my itunes account which is on ICLOUD, will she lose all her data - can this be fixed? I do not think it has been synced with a computer before.

    Disabled
If you previously synced to the computer then you may be able to recover use of the iPod without erasing the iPod by following the instructions here:
    Disabled Recovery-must use syncing computer.
Otherwise y will have to restore and thus erase the iPod
    You can restore from backup
    If not in backup then:
    - If you used PhotoStream then try getting them from your PhotoStream. See that topic of:
iOS: Importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
    - Maybe from the restored iPod via How to perform iPad recovery for photos, videos

    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.
If you previously synced to the computer then you may be able to recover use of the iPod without erasing the iPod by following the instructions here:
    Disabled Recovery-must use syncing computer.

The lightning to 30 pin adapter does not support video as per the item description in the Apple online store:

This adapter lets you connect devices with a Lightning connector to many of your 30-pin accessories.* Supports analog audio output, USB audio, as well as syncing and charging. Video output not supported.

  • My sync with other browsers data is not working - data not being transferred. I accidentally typed in wrong e-mail address when setting up. Will this affect things - if so how can I change it?

    No more details

So nothing under Service Book mentions you're friend's calendar or email address?
If not I'd recommend using the Backup and Restore feature in Desktop Manager to make a backup of all your data. Next I'd wipe the device. To do that go into Options | Security Options | General Settings. Hit the menu button and choose Wipe Handheld. Doing so will erase ALL the data from your device and restore it to factory specs.
Afterwards you can re-setup your email accounts and the google apps to get your information on there. You could then go back into Backup and Restore | Advanced and restore certain databases (mainly the address book and the messages). If you were to do a full restore then it would probably bring back the corrupted email address problem that you're having right now

  • I did a backup on my iPod touch and it said it worked...but now it won't let me access anything and says "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode.  You must restore this IPod before it can be used."  I will lose all my videos and pics if I do that

I did a backup on my iPod touch last night and it said it worked...I wanted to make sure my 1100 pictures and videos, mostly of my son, were safe since we rarely use the iPod touch anymore since we bought an iPad...I can't find them or I have no idea how to access them...I do not have a MAC...I have an HP computer with windows...
Now when I try to use my iTunes a message comes up that says my iPod is on recovery mode and has to do a restore to use my iTunes again...so when u click on that it states that pushing that button will restore my iPod touch to its factory settings...which means I will lose all my data...which I CANNOT do bc the videos of my son are some of his first words, first giggles, etc.
Now my iPod is stuck on a screen with a picture of a USB cord and an iTunes icon... and holding the power and push buttons down at the same time does nothing except bring up the apple icon for a moment and then it goes right back to the USB and iTunes icon
When I called Apple they said in order to talk to tech support I had to pay a fee of 19 dollars...which I think is kind of crap...I paid over 300 dollars for this and all I want is somebody to help me access my pics...I have done nothing wrong...this iPod was never dropped and never broke...I did the backup like I was supposed to and now I have an IPod touch that does nothing, and if my library of pics and videos are on my computer, I have no clue where or how to view them or back them up onto DVD....
I'm very upset and frustrated...please help!!!

You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore.  When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them.  What program did you use to import them?  Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

Try cleaning the lens and see if that will restore functionality to the DVD drive.  Use a DVD lens cleaning disk, if you have a can of compressed air, shoot some into the slot or wrap a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth)  around a business card and insert it gently inside the slot.

Depending on what iPhone you have when you get to the connect to wifi you should be able to activate your device over cellular data. Try doing a hard reset by holding the home circle button an power button until an apple pops up and the  go through the setup again and when you get to the wifi part a option should be setup with cellular data iPhone 4 and above should give this option sometimes doesn't like showing up that's why u have to do a hard reset first

  • I'm having some difficulty with Time Machine.  It appears to be deleting backups from random dates on my external hard drive.  I am not deleting them.  Are they hidden and how do I prevent this from happening?  Can I retrieve them?

I'm having some difficulty with Time Machine.  It appears to be deleting backups from random dates on my external hard drive.  I am not deleting them.  Are they hidden and how do I prevent this from happening?  Can I retrieve them?

... I didn't know that Time Machine was more a last resort back up instead of main back up.
Don't rely upon Time Machine to the exclusion of all else. I compliment Time Machine with a periodic "clone". TM is much better than nothing, but it's a safety net, not a hammock
Here is my understanding of Time Machine's file deletion algorithm, distilled from Pondini's FAQ, Apple's KB articles, and my own observations.
Time Machine deletes ("thins") files from the backup disk as follows:
Hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first backup of the day
Daily backups over 30 days old, except the first backup of the week
Older backups get deleted when Time Machine requires space and you deleted them from the source disk.
Therefore, assuming TM has been performing at least one backup per day, backup files will remain available:
at least thirty days, if they existed on your Mac for at least a day
until you run out of space, if they existed on your Mac for at least a week
In addition to the above, Time Machine always keeps one complete copy of your source disk so that the entire volume could be restored if necessary. Any files that remain on your source volume will be present on the TM backup, no matter how old they are.
If you are using 250 GB of space on your source disk, its Time Machine backups are likely to require at least twice that much. A good estimate of the minimum required backup volume size would be about three times the size of your source disk - 1.5 TB in your case.
A more thorough explanation would require Pondini since he has plumbed Time Machine's mysteries far more than I have.

Unfortunely, all movies and songs purchased in iTunes will be lost...you'll have to purchase them again! Any applications you've purchased, you can download again for free.
Music Rescue is a program you can use to transfer any and all data (music, movies, pictures..) from your iPod to your computer, and iTunes.
