Will thunder bolt display work off Ati 7970 mini display port?

Hay sorry if this has been done before, after reading a few threads i am still confused re compartiblity,
I have a MacPro 3.1 2x 3.2Ghz quad core, with an Ati 7970, it has a mini display port on it, will a 27inch thunderbolt display work of this? i understand that the thunder bolts on the back of the display will not? but also what about the usb's?

those displays now will be out of warranty and a good number have brightness issues over time.
False. The reported brightness issues are very rare. The 30" is one of the best displays ever sold by Apple. Find one for $700-800.
Both the ACD and TBD have the same glare issue as the pre-2012 iMacs. They were never updated to the direct lamination of the 2012-13 iMac screens.

  • Thinkpad Twist s230U no internal display, works on HDMI and mini display port

    Hi,
My Thinkpad Twist does not display anything when turned on except on external monitors. The Device manager shows a greyed out internal display icon, says it is not connected.
    1. Could this be the power connect ribbon cable p/n DC002C003W00 have a fractured wire(s)? I have tested for open circuit between PWR1 and PWR2 connectors and there are 4 sequential pins which are open circuit. Is this normal?
    2. The touch screen works
    3. There appears to be absolutely no LED backlighting working
    4. Is there a possible fix for this and if so is it the power cables or some physical problem with the ribbon cables OR is it definitely a new display that is needed using existing cables?
    Thanks in advance
    Andrew

The last 4 pins on the connector are unused I have determined so it is not the power ribbon cable connector.
I found two wires fractured in the LCD ribbon cable right at the point where it feeds through the twist mount. I expect this could be a common problem after use. After repairing these two wires it did not fix the screen problem. I have ordered a replacement LDVS ribbon cable and will report back once I have replaced that.

  • Will old iSight camera work with new Mac mini?

will an old isight camera work with a late 2014 Mac mini? If so what adapters will I need?

Matthewlopez wrote: will an old isight camera work with a late 2014 Mac mini?...
Yes (if the old external iSight works.)
Apple's long ago discontinued Firewire External iSights were great webcams, but they are old (as consumer electronics go) and some may have had pretty rough treatment. Even NOS (new old stock) items may have been damaged in storage or handling.
If you have access to an external iSight, you can test it using the suggestions from this page: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html.  To reduce the possibility of conflicts for old Firewire iSights, I suggest you disconnect all other Firewire peripherals until you get your external iSight working with your mini. Then connect other needed items one at a time and test each to determine whether you can use any without conflict.
If you are considering buying an external iSight now, a new webcam (with warranty) may be a better choice. Many available alternatives are listed here: http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/
If you want more examples of external iSight and newer minis, take a look at some of the results of this search for your question.
Matthewlopez wrote: ... If so what adapters will I need?
You will need a Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter.  This adapter offers only a Firewire 800 connection.
The Firewire connection on old external iSights is a Firewire 400 connector.  Therefore, you need some way to connect to the FW800 connector on your adapter:
    • To use the FW400 6pin-6pin cable that comes with iSight, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter
      like one of these:
      http://tinyurl.com/ydsbb6m  (I use this one.)
      http://tinyurl.com/cgll7o
      http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fw_adapter.html
    • This Firewire 400-800 cable can work:
      http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA833ZM/A/ (I use this one.)
    • Some report that this low-priced alternative cable works:

  • Mini Display Port To HDMI Cable Not Working?

    Dear members,
i have a mid 2010 13" macbook pro which i have been using a mini display port to HDMI cable which also carries audio for for years now.
I went to use it last night and have to pull the cable out and plug it in a few times to get it to work.
Tonight it just wont work at all no matter how many times i pull the cable out and plug it in again!
Before i use to just connect it and boom, screen would go off then on and it would also mirror on to my TV.
My TV is a 32" Toshiba TV, i tested the HDMI ports, working fine. The mini display port to HDMI cable works fine on my 42" TV downstairs.
Any one know of a fix for this?
    Thanks.

  • Macbook will not let me login unless I disconeect ext. display

I have a new, 2months old, that just stopped detecting my external display(Sony tv connected via Mini display-HDMI-TV) When I restart, I can not login unless the extra display is not connected. It just starts to login, then flashes blue like when you connected a display, and then it goes back the login screen. When I do login in, the macbook does not detect the tv, even tho it flashes blue when I connect it. I have done restarts, and pressed "detect displays" button. Any ideas? Thanks for your help!

I have replaced cables with new & the tv is set to the hdmi port. It has to be something else. very frustrating. It was working fine yesterday. Any other suggestions?

  • Connecting Cinema Display with mini display port to macbook pro with thunderbolt port

I am trying to connect a 27" cinema display (2010) that has a mini display port cable out of the back, into my macbook pro (2013) with thunderbolt ports.  The mini display port cord fits into the thunderbolt port on the Macbook Pro, however the macbook pro does not detect the cinema display and the cinema display does not have any picture on the screen.  The USB plugs in fine and sound comes out, and I have the adapter for the magsafe to magsafe 2 and that works fine, it just the actual display.  Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hello mmholt,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there’s no video on an Apple Cinema Display that’s connected to your MacBook Pro, and you’re wondering if the configuration is supported. It is supported, take a look at the article linked below for more information.
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
    1. Can I connect a Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to a Thunderbolt port on my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac?
Yes. A Mini DisplayPort display or a display connecting with a Mini DisplayPort to VGA, DVI, or HDMI adapter will work just like it was connecting to a Mini DisplayPort connector when plugging in directly to the Thunderbolt connector on your Apple computer. Click here for more information on Mini DisplayPort connections and adapters.
Also, this article provides a lot of great information and troubleshooting tips that will resolve most issues related to video external displays.

  • Using An ASD LCD display with a new Mac Mini

I want to utilize a 17" Apple Studio Display with my new Mac Mini.
Does HDMI support the 35-pin Apple Display Connector (ADC)?
It would require an adapter with female 35-pin on one side and a male HDMI (DVI) on the other. The Apple DVI to ADC adapter doesn't work with the Mac Mini HDMI port.
If two adapters are needed they must have the correct gender connections.
    Thanks.

Your correct, you would need an Apple DVI to ADC adapter, And ether mini display port to DVI OR HDMI to DVI adapter. (just a question of witch port you want to use)
Apple DVI to ADC adapter when they were first released cost about 120; now they're kind of rare and harder to find. Online they can go for 200 dollars. so 120 to 200 dollars to make your display work; and displays don't last for ever they have parts that will break down. Older displays have a light bulb inside them; witch burn out just like all the other light bulbs in your house.
Also DVI to ADC adapters can some times give you blurry images and or text.
For 120 dollars you can buy a generic brand 19" LCD. That 19" LCD would have better contrast ratio, brightness, and refresh rate then the old 17" monitor. (and it would have a warranty) Or for 200 dollars you could buy 23" monitor.

  • 30'' Cinema Display with mini-display-port to dual link DVI adapter usb hub

Hi all, I don't know if any one of you experience this issue and can help me.
I am using an unibody macbook pro (late2008 model) to connect to a 30'' cinema display via the famous $100 mini diaplay port to dual link DVI adapter. I have connected the usb cable from the ACD to the adapter and the usb cable of the adapter to my macbook pro. This setting works fine under OSX 10.5.7.
When I am using Windows Vista under bootcamp the USB hub on the back of the ACD doesn't work. The device manager of Vista shows an excalmatory mark besides the device "Generic usb hub"; and it reports a problem of "the device cannot be started".
I doubted this problem is due to Windows cannot recognise the $100 adapter as a "generic usb hub"; and apple has not release a driver for this $100 adapter for windows.
Since my MBP only has 2 usb ports and the $100 adapter already occupied one, it would be very much helpful if the usb hub of the ACD can work just like in OSX. Can anyone think of any suggestion?
Much appreciated for reading this post and thank you.

i don't have an answer for you, but i feel your pain. very frustrating when this happens with Apple products and Vista/Bootcamp. wish they were more compatible, for it would make things so much easier for the consumer.

  • Mini-DVI to mini-Display port connector?

Is Apple releasing a cable that connects mini-dvi to mini-display port?
My company today told me that I will get a new Macbook Pro with a mini-display port built in, but I ordered a cinema display directly from Apple.
I plan to connect the new Macbook Pro to the new cinema display (so I can watch all my TV shows in GLORIOUS HD AND IN C.O.L.O.U.R) but I also want to connect my old black Macbook, and my Mac Pro to the new cinema display. (so other members in my family can use the display on their own macbooks when I'm not using it)
This cable will REALLY help, otherwise, I feel like I just bought a new display for myself.

Apple just today has announced free licensing of their MDP technology so that third party companies can incorporate it themselves as well as build things like adapters. I have been saying since this whole controversy started, that Apple would never change their entire product line to MDP and effectively orphan an entire legacy group from upgrading with Apple products, especially in this economy. So before this thread ets ugly, read the article from Ars Technica:

  • Mini display port to composite?

I'm a video DJ and have gotten tired of lugging around 2 DVJs, 2 mixers, and a case of DVDs to my gigs, so I decided to get a MacBook and join the ranks of the laptop DJs.  I'm really starting to regret that decision.  After dropping almost 3 grand on a MacBook, Virtual DJ software, and a midi player, I discovered that the only way to play video out of the MacBook is by the mini display port.  No problem, I found an adaptor (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004VV8R86/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_img) and it'll work fine.  Couldn't be more wrong.  While that adaptor worked (and I've tried a variety of configurations also that worked to equal quality - Mini Display to VGA to RCA, Mini Display to HDMI to RCA with a variety of brands and converters)  the picture quality is fuzzy, washed out and movement in the video is jerky to the point of being distracting.
I understand the whole conversion from mini display to composite is not the easiest thing.  I've done a ton of research and reading about how the whole process works ( http://www.epanorama.net/circuits/vga2tv/vga_to_tv_techniques.html is an excellent article explaining a lot of it) but this just *****.  Does anyone know a way I can get a good picture?  Most clubs (I've actually never seen one here in the US or in Europe) don't use HDMI cables to hook up their TVs, I've always had to run composite, and if this doesn't work I'm looking at going back to my old equipment and selling the MacBook - which is not what I want to do!

As long as the clubs you're working in persist using antiquated analog TVs, you aren't ging to be able to make them display high-quality images.

  • Mac Mini mini-display to DVI issues

I have a late 2012 Mac Mini running OSX Mavericks, and I am currently using an LG Monitor over HDMI. I want to run a second Monoprice tablet monitor from the mini-display using a DVI cable and an Apple mini-display to DVI adapter. Every time I plug it in, both screens go dark and the computer crashes and restarts. The Monoprice monitor works fine when I unplug the LG from the HDMI port and plug in my Monoprice using a DVI to HDMI cable. Also, at one point, I plugged my Monoprice in to the mini-display port using a mini-display to VGA adapter and VGA cable, and it only gave me a 1200 X 800 resolution (The Monoprice is 1440 X 900---I could never get it to display this resolution using the mini-display port).
Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

I used an HDMI to DVI cable to connect an Apple TV to an Acer monitor, so I would expect the same to work for the mini. You'll have to run the audio separately, however, as you won't get audio through DVI.
