Will Time Capsule back itself up?

Just curious if anyone knows if Time Capsule will back up its own contents. For example, if I want to house my iTunes music library on the Time Capsule hard drive, will it get backed up by Time Capsule itself?

But if he uses TC as a shared network drive to house his iTunes library (and not as a network TM backup drive) his library would only exist on the TC and won't be backed up anywhere, right? So how would he backup the iTunes library? Would he have to connect another external drive to back up the library on TC?
I'm wondering myself as I want to use the TC to set-up a centralized iTunes repository for our home network.
Yes. You would need a second drive to back-up the library. Personally, I don't think TC & TM are a true back-up system; instead, they simply handle version-control.
Like yourself, I plan on using TC as a centralized iTunes repository. In addition, I will add an external RAID NAS to handle true-incremental back-ups.

Time Machine will backup the drive to the Time Capsule if it is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and it is connected directly to your Mac by USB or FireWire....and it is not "excluded" from backups in Time Machine Options.

The iPhone and iPad back up to iTunes on your Mac. Then, when your Mac backs up to the Time Capsule, the iOS backups are copied over as well.
    Or
The iPhone and iPad can backup to iCloud
The iPhone and iPad cannot backup directly to the Time Capsule. See this Apple Support document for more details on backups.

  • Will time capsule back up Sooloos Store Ones?

I have a Sooloos system with two Store One devices holding almost two terabytes of music. Can the Time Capsule back up Sooloos?  I assume through iTunes?  If so what about auto backup?

Time Capsule can do NOTHING..... it is a dumb hard disk inside a pretty much standard Airport Extreme Router.
It is a target for Time Machine.. all the smarts are in the computer and TM which does the backup.
BUT TM cannot backup network drives.
So neither TC or TM can do anything.. in and of themselves.
I have no idea what a Sooloos is but if it can backup itself to SMB or AFP target network disk, then it can work.. otherwise no.
Edit.. I did read up this basic review
    http://www.meridian-audio.com/sooloos/pdfs/sound-vision.pdf
But I still don't know the networking abilities of the unit.
iTunes will not be able to backup a network drive either.. only if it is locally stored on the computer, then TM can back it up locally.. or perhaps you can get itunes to cloud store the material.. but 2TB is an awful lot to do that with.

  • Will Time Capsule back-up an external hard drive that is connected to it directly via USB?

I'm considering a macbook air, but I have ~200GB of music and photos that currently lives on another laptop (and is manually backed up to a 500GB ext. hard drive).  Ideal set-up would be as follows:
    1. MBA (128GB) with just the OS, applications and ~ 5GB of .doc, .xls, .pdf, etc.
    2. The 500GB hard drive (loaded w/ music and jpegs' and permanently connected to Time Capsule so that I don't have to plug it into the MBA everytime I want to use music/jpegs)
    3. Time capsule (constantly backing up the MBA and hard drive via time machine).
Does anybody know if this is possible (i.e. will the TC back up an external hard drive that is permanently attached to it, rather than attached to a Mac?)
Does anybody have other suggestions (without having to buy any more gear) for storage/back-up that don't require that I plug that external HD to a computer every time I want to access the data?

No, sorry, Time Machine cannot back up from a network location.

The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync (and probably others) can back up from a network location.

  • Will Time Capsule Back up windows

I have both an Apple MacBook and a Windows 7 computer and I was wondering if I could run backup on both computers.

You can backup to TC.. but TM is mac only software.. you will need a PC backup software .. thousands of them available .. get something that does easy incremental backups..
Getting win7 access to the TC can be tricky. See how that goes first.
And mixing backups from different sources you might be better using disk image.

  • Can time capsule back everything including pictures?

Will Time Capsul back up my pictures also?

    Why would it not?
It would be a useless backup if it failed to backup something as important as your pictures..
But it is Time Machine that is the backup program. Time Capsule is a dumb box getting the backup files.
iPhoto stores its library in strange and various ways according to version. So read up now how to restore.
    http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
Also if this is an external drive you are talking about you need to make sure it is included in the TM backup.
TM cannot backup network drives.. so having no idea where you are storing this I can only point you to actually read about how Time Machine works.

    4.  What happend when a visitor logs onto my existing wireless router?
I'm new to Macs (well a returning user having started with Mac Plus!!) and not very technical.  Any help / advice will be much appreciated.
    Ray

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router.  I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

  • Will the new time capsule back up Windows on an iMac running Parallels Desktop?

Will the new time capsule back up Windows on an iMac running Parallels Desktop?

Windows home version MSBackup, cannot backup to network drives.
That was a little bonus from Bill for those who didn't fork out for Pro or Ultimate.
Like people with home versions would never need to backup to network drives.. oh no.. never!!
You need to mount the hard disk in windows for it to work.
It will help a lot if you load the airport utility for windows into your windows OS.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1547
Open windows explorer and type the network address of the TC.
\\TCname.local (where TCname is the correct network name of the TC).
The TC should have all names that are windows compatible.. ie
Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule is just wrong. It is too long, it has spaces and it has apostrophe which is illegal.
A good name for the TC is TC
The default hard disk share name of data is fine. It should not be Time Capsule or anything again that is over long .. has spaces or is otherwise incompatible with windows.
A good name for the TC wifi is TCwifi
Then you can mount it \\TC
typing that directly into the address bar of windows explorer.
There are still issues with windows naturally and running in parallels I have no idea what other issues might come up.
Tell me if you have issues.. but you will need most likely to check the network.
Open a command window and ping the TC by name and by IP address. If IP address works just mount by IP.
\\10.0.1.1 for example .. and that is the default TC IP address when in router mode.
If you still cannot access the TC my recommendation is to use a USB drive and use that.. it is 10x easier and more reliable than mixing Mac and windows backups on the TC.

Yes. If you're using Time Machine, open its preferences and ensure the drives aren't excluded; Time Machine can't back up drives in some formats, such as FAT32.

  • Will a time capsule back up Mp3s for iPad access?

A family with 1 pc and 4 ipads and iphones.
(one day soon will be an all around apple family)
iCloud has been great with backing up items bought from iTunes.
My problem is, I have old LPs that I have converted to mp3s, so I have not yet been able to "cut my cord".
I am hoping a time Capsule will solve my problem.
    Qs
1.Will the time capsule back up mp3s from my pc and allow access to my iPad wirelessly?
    2. Has iCloud made any changes to the time capsule?
(As far as new features or restrictions as far a backing up my devices.

THanks for reply. So what if my mp3s are in my itunes library.

  • If I move my iPhoto library to iDrive will Time Capsule still back it up?

My disk space is getting tight and I'm considering moving my iPhoto library to an external drive.  I've been happily using Time Capsule for years for backup.  If I move iPhoto library to my external drive (not the one in Time Capsule) will Time Capsule stop backing it up?
    OS X 10.10.1
    TC Version 7.6.4

Thanks, Linc, you are the greatest!
So I moved my iTunes library to my external disk.  When I checked Time Machine's Excluded list it was not there.  Then I entered TM and saw that the library had been backed up from the external disk.  So all is well and apparently the OS guys stopped adding external drives to the Excluded list.

  • Will Time Machine Back Up Data on a Networked Time Capsule to an External HD?

Situation: I use my time capsule as a "network server". This is where all my files, music and movies are located. These files need to be backed up regularly. The Time Capsule is connected to my MacBook Pro via ethernet.
Question: Can I use Time Machine to back up my files on the networked time capsule to another external hardrive?
Goal: Data from TIME CAPSULE backed up to an EXTERNAL HD via time machine. I can have the external HD on the network or via USB to the Macbook Pro.
Any help is appreciated. I've been trying to do this off an on for a few years with no luck.
    Thanks!

Can I use Time Machine to back up my files on the networked time capsule to another external hardrive?
No, but ChronoSync can do this and I believe that Carbon Copy Cloner can now do this as well.

  • Will Time Machine back up iTunes media  on a different internal drive

I have my iTunes media on a different internal drive.
Will Time machine back up that data as well?
I have two other internal drives, each 750gb.
Does Time Machine back those drives up as well? Or does it contain itself to the OS disk?

    Stephen,
Amazingly, Time Machine will do this by default!! In fact, Time Machine will back up every volume that is present at the time of the initial backup, unless told to do otherwise. I keep my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on a secondary partition of my MBP's hard drive, and Time Machine backed that up automatically.
Your backup will be contained in a "Backups.backupdb" folder on whatever external volume you choose to use for Time Machine. Within this folder, you will find other folders named for the various volumes that are being backed up. As far as I know, there is no limit to how many can be kept.
