Will Time Capsule conflict with Airport Extreme?

I just purchased a Time Capsule but after reading the discussion board it looks like it might conflict or override my Airport Extreme? Also, if I do connect it, will it ever erase any information on its own without me manually deleting? I think I'm experiencing buyers remorse. My main purpose is to free up space on my iMac. I could have just purchased a simple external hard drive but this seemed like a better choice at the time. Help!

Depending on the age of the Mac a USB, Firewire or Thunderbolt drive would be a much better choice.. as an addition to the TC.. TC is still needed if you have no backup. If you store your files on the external drive think about where you want them to be backed up to.

No the TC and airport can live happily together.. just decide which is router and which is bridge.. as far as possible connect together with ethernet.. but you can wirelessly connect as well.
A TC is a backup device not really a NAS.. it has no means to back itself up.. but it will not erase anything without you deliberately erasing it..
Perhaps you mean the way Time Machine works.. if you erase something on the disk.. TM will eventually erase it from the backups.. this is very true.. but that is specific to TM and backups.. not to stuff you store on the TC. That is not erased unless you do it deliberately.

Although TM is loaded on every Mac since Leopard.. and very convenient to use.. it isn't the only show in town.. and other utilities can do disk images and incremental backups.. without half the issues that TM does. Although more limited in restore potential as well.

Time Capsule interfering with airport extreme?

Recenty my Time Capsule (first model) connected to my iMac Intel Core2Duo running 10.6.2(first model with that chip), has been having some issues. I just moved and when I tried to hook it up wirelessly, Airport Admin said there was an error connecting. There was no error number. I hooked it up wired via ethernet, and was able to configure for Time Machine and get a backup started overnight. After the backup was done, the Time Capsule went back to a blinking yellow light the next morning. The Time Capsule is set to connect to my existing Airport Extreme network. When it went back to a yellow light, my existing Airport Extreme network no longer functioned, even though it showed a green light. Next thing I knew I checked the Time Capsule, and it was green again. Shut off the power to the Time Capsule, and my wireless nework was operational again. Could my Airport Extreme network not like what the Time Capsule is doing? Or is it just coincidence?

Will time machine work with airport extreme?

Hi all, is there a way to create a time machine back up on a USB disk that is attached to an airport extreme? I've tried it a couple of different ways and it's not seeming that it works very well. Any help would be appreciated.

I've tried several configurations all of which started with formatting the drive with a single partition Mac OS Extended (Journaled) GUID.
The first configuration was where I did a 100GB Time Machine Backup to the drive while it was connected (so I wouldn't have to deal with a slow first backup over wireless, because my MacBook Pro is of the older 802.11G wireless versus N). Then moved the drive over to my Airport Extreme, mounted the drive and started the backup. It failed with the following error message "The backup volume is not in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which is required."
The second configuration was where, after reformatting to single partition to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) GUID, I connected the drive directly to the Airport Extreme without having done a Time Machine Backup. After mounting the drive, I started Time Machine and it began to run. I left it over nite to back-up and, while it got started, it did not make it past about 9GB after over 6 hours and it stopped.
Trying the second configuration again...and it is running but 7 hours later 25 of 101GB done.

Can I extend Time Capsule network with Airport Extreme

I have a new 2TB TimeCapsule, I would like to extend my network to the front of my house via Ethernet and an Airport Extreme basestation. The wireless reception in the front room is almost non existant, but I do have an Ethernet cable from the existing TimeCapsule connected to my iMac in the front room. I would like to add the old Airport Extreme Base Station to the front room and connect the Ethernet to the Wan port of the AEB and then connect the iMac and my Apple TV to the Ethernet port on the AEB.
I cannot connect via Airport Wireless due to metal studs, Cement block walls.
Is this possible?

The Guest Network function of the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme cannot be enabled when the device is in Bridge Mode. Unfortunately, with another router...the Telus...upstream on your network, Bridge Mode is indicated as the correct setting for all other routers on the network.
If you can replace the Telus gateway with a simple modem (that performs no routing functions), you should be able to configure either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme....whichever is connected to the modem....to provide a Guest Network.

No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Time Capsule connect wirelessly and extend the Asus WiFi signal, since it would not be compatible with another manufacturer's router for that purpose.
Another way of saying the same thing here would be that if you want to extend the network wirelessly, it will take two Apple routers to do so

TIme Capsule working with Airport Extream

Hello I have a home office in a two story home with a MacBook Pro, IMac, AirPort Extreme for my cable modem. I have on order a Time Capsule. The AirPort Extreme works great for our two story home, very well on the bottom level, and has about 70 to signal strength on the upper level of the home. I would like to unplug the AirPort Extreme in the office on the lower level, set up the TIme Capsule in the office for the lower level, perform all backups that are needed. Then take the AirPort Extreme and move it upstairs to help make my wifi much stronger upstairs and around my property. Any ideas? Good idea, bad idea? Things I need to do first or think about? Thank you.

Hi Bob, another question for you if you have time. Time Capsule is on it's way via mail and I had been going over this set pre set up in my head and you said something that made me think more about the Airport Extreme.

I'm going to start to learn about the correct way to do this in the next day or two, but my question is.
Should I reset the Airport Extreme back to it's "factory settings" pre setting up the Time Capsule.
Then perform the work of the back up of the Time Capsule like you had suggested.
Then take the Airport Extreme up stairs and start the set up of "extending the network?" with a fresh Airport Extreme.
Or leave the Airport Extreme as is, move up stairs, and "just extend" as it will already be configured to my Imac/MacBook Pro Iphone, ect?

If your Time Capsule was purchased in the last few years, chances are you have a simultaneous dual band Time Capsule.
In order to extend both bands using wireless only, you would need a new AirPort Extreme, since the AirPort Express would only be able to extend one band from the Time Capsule.
If you only need to have one band extended, then an AirPort Express would likely work for your application.
Whether you choose the Extreme or Express, keep in mind that the correct location for an extending device is a point that is approximately half the distance from the Time Capsule and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.
Apple's instructions to configure the "Extend" setup are here. Although an AirPort Extreme is pictured in the example, the instructions for an AirPort Express would be the same.

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router. I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

No, sorry.. there is no way for the TC to see the files.. and even if you plug the hard disk into the TC there is no mechanism in the TC to drag the files to itself.. The TC is absolutely a dumb network attached drive.. everything you want to do must be done from a computer.

Extend present Time Capsule network with an Extreme

I currently have a wireless network in my house using a Time Capsule that is connected to the modem in the office. I bought a Blu-Ray player that is connected to my TV in the living room, and if I plug it directly in to a router using an ethernet cable, I can stream movies to my TV. Sooooo.....I found the old Airport Extreme I used before I bought the Time Capsule, and I would like to use it to extend my network to the living room. I have the Extreme plugged in right now by the BLu-Ray player, and the name I used for the old Extreme network is showing up on my laptop, as well as the new Time Capsule network. The Extreme is blinking amber. What do I need to do to just add this Extreme as an extension of my network so I can connect it to my Bu-Ray via a ethernet. Thanks.

Since you have the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), you can take advantage of the "extend a network" feature.
o If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

Settings for Roaming Network using Time Capsule plus old Airport Extreme

I am trying to set up a network in the most effective way for my home and am experiencing some difficulties which I hope your support can help me overcome.
My home is constructed of concrete reinforced with steel and consequently the walls are dense and wireless signals are adversley affected. I have two wireless base stations via which I hope to provide wireless coverage to my whole home which is on the ground floor level only. My Time Capsule is located at one end of my home and is directly connected to my modem which receives the external fibre optic supplied internet connection. The Time Capsule is managed via Airport Utility 6.1. A mac is connected to the Time Capsule via ethernet cable - the Time Capsule also provides a wireless signal. Also connected to the Time Capsule via a long ethernet cable that is routed in internal cable channels within my home is an old conical shaped white Airport Extreme. The Airport Extreme is located at the other end of my house and also has a mac connected to it via ethernet and provides a wireless signal too. The Airport Extreme is managed via Airport Utility 5.6.
I hope to have a wireless network that my iphones and ipad can connect to in various areas of the house. I have read the instructions for setting up a Roaming Network, yet the screen shots provided do not reflect the screens I see using Airport Utility 5.6 and 6.1. Can anyone please assist with the settings that I require?
Also I have a question regarding a roaming network - if I connect a mobile device to the wireless network near to my Time Capsule and then move to the other end of my house near to the Airport Extreme what should happen to the wireless connection strength? Currently with my existing settings the mobile device is maintaining the connection to the Time Capsule and dropping to extremely low connections levels rather than picking up the wireless signal from the Airport Extreme. Should this be the case and if so is there some better way to set up my network?
Originally I had the Airport Extreme configured in a different location closer to the Time Capsule to extend the wireless network from the Time Capsule. The problem was that the Airport Extreme frequently seemed to not provide the newtork. I'm not sure if it lost the network from the Time Capsule or had some other problem.

So just to be clear.. the Mac at the other end of the house.. has internet connection.. via ethernet.. through the old extreme.. ethernet to the TC.. which is connected via ethernet to the fibre connection.
Is the airport extreme in bridge mode?
As long as it is, you are good to go.
On both the TC and AEBS you create a wireless network.
On both TC and AEBS you name it the same.. eg 24ghz (please use short, no space, pure alphanumeric name).
You set both with the same security.. WPA2 Personal
You set both with the same passkey.. 8-12 characters pure alphanumeric.
BUT you set the wireless channels.. there are three channels that do not overlap.. 1, 6, 11 (13 in europe ME??)
Suggest you set TC to 6.. and set the AEBS to 11.
It might work on auto but IMHO wireless is something you are better controlling than leaving it to dumb algorithm

First of all there seem to be two different devices with more or less the same description one is just "Safe Capsule Made for Apple Time Capsule" which seems to indicate that it has the capacity for 2TB of memory, and "Safe Capsule with 2TB Made for Apple Time Capsule". It isn't clear why the second one is $369 while the first is only $79, but I assume that the first is probably "sans drive"? Since they don't say that specifically, it sounds a bit like a scam.
Second, is this devise usable if connected to Airport Extreme, or only if I already have a Time Capsule from Apple? Anyway, I order it and then immediately had second thoughts so called and canceled the order. But it's not clear to me what this device actually does, and the descriptions seem misleading. It should work fine with either one. You should be aware that Apple doesn't officially support use of a USB drive connected to an Apple Wi-Fi base station as a Time Machine drive, although many people have been reasonably successful with that.
