Will Time Capsule work well with iMac 2,1 2 GB RAM

I have an older iMac with 2GB and a newer one with 4GB. Wondering if connecting them to Time Capsule will do anymore than the 2.4 Linsys routter I'm now using (excluding, of course, the store capacity of the HDD). The old machine has Snow Leo and the newer one ha Lion,.

The Time Capsule will allow you to backup both Macs using the Time Machine function that is built into Snow Leopard and Lion.
If you can provide some specifics on your Linkys router....like a model number....we'll be able to advise on how the wireless capability of the two devices would compare.
As it stands, the Time Capsule will provide a simultaneous dual band 2.4 GHz and 5 Ghz network, along with a Guest Network option and the ability to add an additional hard drive and/or printer to the device to work over the network.

  • Will Time capsule work easily with a Virgin Super Hub ??

I'm a bit of a moron when it comes to anything to do with Computers. Have had my I Mac since February and Love it , so easy to use. Im looking at Back up Storage now and whilst visiting an Apple store they recommeneded the Time Capsule as not only will it give me the storage but it also strengthen the Wireless cover in my home. I use Virgin Broadband and have a Virgin Super Hub. I have read it is easy to connect, but bringing you back to my opening line I am really bad at understanding what will need to be done. Any help in talking to a simpletone in easy to understand language will be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure what the virgin super hub is.. but assuming it is a router with ethernet ports.. and you have one spare ethernet.. then yes, a TC is a great device for you..
I am not sure if you are asking for buying info or setup info because you have bought one.. but the setup is simple if you load the 5.6 airport utility.. I cannot tell you how to do it from the internal version 6 in Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Download and install.. this is simply a more tool version of the utility.. whereas the Lion one is more a toy version.
Go to the manual setup, then internet tab.. down the bottom you will see connection sharing.. the option to choose is off, bridge mode.. update the TC..
Then you can plug it into the virgin router and it will simply work in the network as a network drive.
Wireless can be tricky but for now leave on auto.
If you actually have issues.. think of the network as the washing machine.. get the technician in to fix it.. just like you do the washing machine.. I find it hard to understand why people expect to be able to do everything themselves.

  • I like the idea of auto back-up for my new iMac, Ipad and PC Netbook, particularly if I can access all files and data stored on any device.  But I have a Conceptronic router.  Will Time Capsule work with this and how?

    1. Will Time Capsule work with this and how?
    2. Can my printer USB be plugged in and then shared between the devices?
    3. Can I create a network and how?
    4.  What happend when a visitor logs onto my existing wireless router?
I'm new to Macs (well a returning user having started with Mac Plus!!) and not very technical.  Any help / advice will be much appreciated.

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router.  I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

  • Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion   3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS) cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC.

Installed today Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion. I also have  3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS). Internet Access is cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC. Does the Airport utility under Windows is way to access backup capabilities with TC ?

The TC is really just an external networked hard disk plus router.. you can access the hard disk and place files on it from any computer. You can backup any computer to the TC but it will have to use a backup software in windows.. there are literally thousands available. The built in msbackup is horrible.. but you can download lots of different software and buy then online for not a lot. Macrium Reflect has a free disk image backup, and when you pay for it includes incremental. I think disk images are well worth it, as they recover much better.. and their is a proper method of recovery using a boot cd.
BTW the TC space is not endless. And it is designed to hold a large number of incremental backups.. so anything you do in backing up several machines will make the number of backups limited. Remember you can also use a usb hard disk plugged in as a Network accessible disk. But it has to be formatted HFS+ or Fat32.. the later being highly undesirable.

  • Does Time Capsule play well with older Airport devices?

Hello.  Today I am likely coming home with a Time Capsule and intend to rebuild my home wireless network.
I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on the value/worth of attempting to connect older airport devices to the new network? I have a VERY old (1st gen?) Express, a 2nd or 3rd Express, and an Airport Extreme which, here on my lunch break away from home, I'm frankly not sure which age it is. I have been using the Extreme as the Base Station and intend to wipe it and set up the TC as the Base Station.
There are a few areas of our house that don't get good signals currently. If they STILL don't, should I try to connect any of these older devices as extenders? Or will they not play well with the TC because of their different letters (g/n/etc.?)
Thanks in advance. We'd been planning on getting a TC for a long while but found out this week that our Extreme is somehow getting in the way of our network connection... So I'm hoping that a brand new set-up will improve our speed and entire system. We have a household of many devices--one iMac and more than four iOS devices (potentially depending on who's awake) running on a 60Mbp/4 upload system. For a long time we've had internet but at 23-26 Mbp tops.
Any of your thoughts or ideas would be welcome.

Old G wireless express should be retired.. it will not work well in the current network. Although people do use them just for audio use.. the later OS have ceased to be able to set them up. G extreme is of no use.
You can use anything that is N wireless.. but you need to be sane and rational about using a router that is 3-6years old.. as it might cause as much problems as it fixes. Certainly there is nothing wrong with having a go.. as long as you are not too hopeful.
The best way to get wireless in a dark corner is to run ethernet over to that area.. and run a wireless AP there. Your N apple airport can function as AP. Even using EOP (ethernet over power) can sometimes work.
If you try to extend wireless wireless to the dark zone.. you cannot place the AP in the dark zone.. as it will get no signal to extend.. it needs to be able to pick up good signal and still have sufficient range to reach the end of your zone. That suggests if it doesn't work now.. it won't work in this new role either.. but no skin off having a try.

  • We have 3 macs and one pc in our house. will time capsule work for backup?

we have 3 macs and one pc. will time capsule be suitable

If you intend to backup automatically using Time Machine, the Time Capsule will work just fine with your Macs if they are running the Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion operating systems..
But Time Machine does not exist for PCs, so you will need to look around for a similar application for Windows. I haven't used it, but a neighbor of mine who has both Macs and PCs reports that he has had good luck with Genie Timeline.
A Google search will provide links for the application if you are interested.

  • Will Time Capsule work as External Hard-Drive?

I'm looking for a device to move all my pics and video to as my MacBook Air is running out of storage. I was told by a sales guy at a Mac Store (not apple store) that the Airport Time Capsule would not work because it only does a mirror back-up and any files that I delete off my MacBook would also get deleted off the Time Capsule. First, is this true? Second if so what device will work as a wireless external hard drive for my MacBook?

I was told by a sales guy at a Mac Store (not apple store) that the Airport Time Capsule would not work because it only does a mirror back-up and any files that I delete off my MacBook would also get deleted off the Time Capsule.
There is some confusion here between Time Machine and Time Capsule.
The software that backs up your Mac is Time Machine.. it is not going to provide an alternative to storage locally.. so if you delete items from the Mac hard disk .. TM will delete the file from the backup.
What the Time Capsule basically is.. a wireless router with a dumb hard disk inside.. that has nothing to do with backups... but neither is it a fully fledged NAS.. it is kind of like any low level router to which you plug in a hard disk.. the fact that TC has it internal helps its speed but adds nothing to its functionality.
You can indeed store your files on a TC..
    With the following provisions..
    1. Time Machine will no longer work. TM is limited to local disks..
    2. iphoto in particular is specifically stated by apple to be an application that needs a local disk.. using network disk.. ie TC will result in corruption.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168
Although mostly about FAT32   it adds network drives.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
Note this applies to all network drives.. not just TC .. everything.
    3. No backup.. your files are now sitting on a Time Capsule.. TM cannot back them.. and here TC fails to be a NAS.. all NAS can back themselves up to a backup USB disk.. TC cannot do this.. there is no incremental backup available.. and so if you want to backup your files you must do it manually ie copy and paste .. or use a decent backup software like Carbon Copy Cloner.. since it is beyond TM. And then the question arises . .where are you going to target the backups.. the very worst location is over wireless to a USB on the TC.. since that will make for extraordinarily slow backups.
I'm looking for a device to move all my pics and video to as my MacBook Air is running out of storage.
The correct place to do this is an external drive plugged into the MBA. So TM can continue to backup the files to the TC.
if so what device will work as a wireless external hard drive for my MacBook?
There is no such thing as a wireless external hard drive.. you must plug an external drive into the MBA by USB or FW or Thunderbolt depending on the age of the unit.. All wireless drives are network.. very few exist.. Most NAS are devices you plug into a wireless router.. and I would recommend against wireless built into a NAS.. it will not be as good or fast as a wireless router.
TC can be pressed into service.. as long as you are prepared to deal with backups.. and the fact that you will eventually corrupt your iphoto library and should really use TC only for storage not live files.

  • Will Time Capsule work if I partition my new Seagate Plus 1 TB drive?

I have a Macbook with OS 10.6.8, and I just purchased a new Seagate Plus 1 TB drive. My macbook's 120GB memory is nearly full, so I would like to partition the new hard drive into 2 sections--one for Time Capsule and one to offload oodles of pictures, video clips, songs, etc. I began reading discussion forums to get directions and have read some people saying that partitioned drives support Time Capsule fine, and others saying that on a partitioned drive Time Capsule will not reboot from a crashed hard drive. Is this true? (I hope not!) Can someone offer me the truth on this topic, as well as accutate instructions about how to partition? Thank you very much!

If you purchased a standalone external drive, you're using Time Machine, not a Time Capsule, and can partition the drive normally.
All the copies of a file you want to keep shouldn't be on a single drive, as it can fail at any time.

  • Will Time Capsule play nice with my Linksys N router?

This is a bit of a re-post from the Time Machine forum. My Seagate drive is acting up, sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not, and starting today I can't mount the bugger at all with any of my Macs.
So now I'm looking at a Time Capsule with"server grade" storage, does this mean it's more a more reliable drive or just advertising gimmick? I already have a Wifi-N router, so I don't need another router, but I also don't want to replace a cheapo external hard drive every year.
If I get the Time Capsule, is there any way to use both routers for a larger wifi range? I have dead spots on the far end of my house and in the basement, or will the Time Capsule be too redundant, maybe I just need another external HD and I'll just rotate between them when they fail.

"I ask, because isn't what the Airport Express does?"
No, the Express is a base station just like the Extreme and Time Capsule. These devices will "join" just about any wireless network, but they will only "extend a wireless network" that has been created by another Apple base station.
There were a few compatible devices from other manufacturers using WDS (Wireless Distribution System), but since the bandwidth of the wireless network dropped 50% for each remote device, this severely limited performance.

  • Does Airport time capsule work well as a storage for large files, such as RAW Photos and HD Video?

If Airport time capsule can work as a storage device, how reliable is it?  Are downloads into Airport dependent on internet speed, or on the time capsule wifi?

If Airport time capsule can work as a storage device, how reliable is it?
The Time Capsule was designed to be used for Time Machine backups, but can equally be used for storage. Like any network storage device it is relatively reliable. However, you should always have a good backup strategy for important files.
Are downloads into Airport dependent on internet speed, or on the time capsule wifi?
Data transfer rates "into" the Time Capsule are dependent on a number of factors. Which factors depend on the original source of the files. Regardless, the common factors will be the TC's internal hard drive interface and data write speeds of the drive itself.

  • Does Time Machine work well with a portable drive?

As the drive is not always going to be connected to my Macbook Pro. If, say, I connect it once a week to back up Time Machine will that be a result or should I use another backup system? Thanks for any advice.

Will the Pro often be in range of your network, and the iMac shown in your signature (or another desktop Mac)?
If so, there's an alternative; the Pro can back up via your network to a "shared" drive connected to the iMac. Once set up, that will happen hourly, as long as the Pro is awake and in range. See #22 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for details.
If not, Time Machine will send a warning after 10 days without a backup. After several days, depending on the volume of changes, the next backup may be somewhat longer.

  • Will Time Capsule be updated/refreshed to work with iCloud?

In other words, will Time Capsule be released with built-in iCloud connectivity? For that matter, AirPort Extreme w/ an external drive attached?

If you re-check the Terms of Use Agreement for this support area, you will find that this is a community support area of users, just like you.
None of us will know what a notoriously secretive company like Apple might be planning in the future.

  • Does time capsule work for windows

Will Time Capsule work on Windows computers?

Yes.  It's just a network drive to Windoze.  Once you find it browsing the network (assuming you named the worksapces riht, etc.), it will pop up on the list of network drives, and from there you can assign a drive letter to it and keep it auto-mounted.
However, with windoze 7 home, their new built-in 'backup' won't touch it, or use it in any way, because Micro$uck considers backup to network attached storage a 'premium feature' that mere home users shouldn't have access to.
However, any other backup software that isn't ******** will copy to the drive, if you assign a drive letter to it.  Including 'xcopy /h /e /r /d /i /c /k /y D:\mystuff Z:\backup', assuming you mounted the Time Capsule as 'Z'.
