Will transferring data between computers over mifi's wireless network be counted as data usage?

I know it SHOULDN'T be counted but I wouldn't put it past a cell phone company to considered that data usage as well.
If anyone knows for SURE i'd appreciate it.

    Hello Maxatv,
I want to make sure you don't have to worry about any data overages or additional monies.  The only time your data is being utilized is when your device is connected to the Verizon Wireless network.  Sending and reciving data is when it will use your allowance.

  • Problem Transferring items between computers

Hi, I followed the instructions under Transferring items between computers, and the pc I tranferred to gives me an error message stating: "Document is not licensed for this device type." Both devices are HP with WIndows 7. The ebook opens just fine on one HP, but not on the second HP. How can I get it to open successfully on both computers? Thank you.

    Ken,
If you need to regularly transfer data then I'd set up an Ethernet connection to file share and then transfer (modern Macs have at least 100BaseT Ethernet (which is around 12MBps max).
If it's a irregular transfer you don't do often then using Firewire Target Disk Mode (theoretical 50MBps max) is probably easiest:
Connect the two Macs with a 6pin-to-6pin Firewire cable.
Restart the donor Mac which has the files on it and hold down the T key.
The hard disk of the donor Mac will appear on the second Mac.
    Transfer your files.
Drag the hard disk of the donor Mac to the Trash to unmount it.
Power down the donor Mac using the power button.
Other options include networking over Firewire (again about 50Mbps but some overheads for the protocols involved) or Airport (original approx 1MBps max, Extreme approx 6MBps max).

  • What's the difference between "Extend" or "Join" a wireless network?

I have a Time Capsule as my main base station and an Airport Express I'd like to use on another floor of my home for an internet connection for my Blu-ray player and to stream music via Airtunes. If I connect the Express to the Blu-ray using Ethernet and to my speakers with an audio cable, should I set up the Express to Extend or Join my network? What's the difference between "Extend" or "Join" a wireless network?

If I connect the Express to the Blu-ray using Ethernet and to my speakers with an audio cable, should I set up the Express to Extend or Join my network?
    Extend.
What's the difference between "Extend" or "Join" a wireless network?
When you configure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to "join an existing wireless network" it will perform like any other wireless client (laptop, printer, etc.) that connects to that wireless network. It will NOT perform as a router nor extend the wireless range of (in this case) the Time Capsule (TC).
However, if you configure the AX to "extend a wireless network" it will perform as an additional wireless access point to your TC's wireless network, effectively extending the TC's wireless range. In addition, the AX's Ethernet port will also be enabled and you can connect a single Ethernet client or multiple ones if you connect an Ethernet switch instead.

  • TS1398 My wireless password in only 6 lowercase letters, but my iPod touch requires me to enter 8 before allowing me to join.  Therefore it will not let me log on to the wireless network, any solutions?

What encryption are you using on the router?
If WEP you have to set the router to use the first key and you have to enter the first key as the password on the iPod. See:

  • How do I share files between two Macs on my wireless network?

I have an iMac G4 and an ibook G3 on a wireless network. I have "file sharing" activated on both computers. (Also Appletalk, which may or may not be a misguided move, but I got the idea from OSX "Help.")
When I try to get from either computer onto the other, my computer is recognized by name (another alternative is to log on as a "guest"). I'm prompted for a password. None of the passwords I use works. I've tried the administrative passwords for both computers.
How do I get beyond this hurdle to share files? I've posted elsewhere to no avail. This must be an easy one. How do you share files between two macs on one network?

Do your accounts on the machines have the same short name? It's an issue I've seen a few names.. one machine with bsmith, the other with bobsmith, but the long names for both being "Bob Smith". The login windows would confuse users because it showed their names, but because the short names didn't match, it wouldn't work.
The password you should use is the administrative one, so I don't know why you're not having luck.

  • Iphone will not recognize an Airport Express extending a wireless network

Hi. I asked elsewhere in the support community and someone suggested I also ask here. I have two Airport Expresses, one in my living room that is creating a wireless network, and another in the back of my house, extending a wireless network so it will reach in to the back yard. The one in the living room is the new 2012 model, and the one in back is the pre-2012 model. They both have the latest firmware, and I configured them both using the Airport Utility, and can confirm they are working as configured, to create and extend a wireless network.
My mid-2010 Macbook with Lion shifts between devices effortlessly, switching to the stronger signal when I move between the house and the back yard. I can verify this by selecting Option+Click on the wireless widget in the menu bar and checking the BSSID against the Airport Utility. But the signal from the living room unit still reaches in to the back yard, and as far as I can tell, and the iPhone 4S cannot recognize the existence of the extending unit (outside of the Airport Utility). I know the former is a well-known problem, the iPhone is unique in that it will annoyingly hold on to the existing connection for dear life, even when a stronger one is available. I thought I could work around that by power cycling or disabling/reenabling Wi-Fi when out of range of the living room unit to get around that problem but even that doesn't work.
When I go some place out of range of the living room unit but still within line of sight of the back yard unit, say the neighboring field, the laptop can connect to the back yard unit with about -75 RSSI, but the iPhone does not even see the wireless network. Even after a power cycle at that location. If I approach my back yard from the field while constantly scanning Wi-Fi (switching between the front pane in the Settings app and the Wi-Fi pane), the iPhone does not see my network until it sees the living room unit, at which point it tries to connect, and the Airport Utility shows the iPhone is connected to the living room unit, not the back yard unit. This is in contrast to the Macbook which both sees the extending Airport and happily connects to it when it has better signal than the living room unit.
Any idea why the iPhone cannot see the extending Airport Express but the Macbook can?

Anyone? Has anyone had experience with this problem? I've reset the extending Airport and reapplied the settings and still have the same problem.

  • Difference between the 'WDS' & 'Extend a wireless network' settings?

I bought a Time Capsule & an AirPort Express with the intention of using the AirPort Express to extend the wireless signal in my home. After reading up on it a little it looked like I needed to use the 2 devices in WDS mode.
I had trouble settings it up in WDS mode & ended up doing it without.I set the Time Capsule to ‘Create wirelss network’ under the Wireless settings in AirPort Utility & the AirPort Extreme to ‘Extend a wireless network’ & it seems fine.
I’m just wondering what the difference is between this & WDS mode? And would WDS be better than what I’ve set it to now? (Would it extend the range better than the current setting?)

"Extend a wireless network" is an option only among 802.11n devices. It is much easier to set up than WDS and is potentially faster in terms of throughput because of the differences between n and g.
It's not clear to me, however, that the throughput of an "extended" network is reduced less in terms of a percentage than is that of a network extended via WDS.

  • Suddenly slow transfer of files between computers over LAN

All, I have the following: HP Desktop, XP Pro, SP3, with Maxtor external HD Dell Laptop, VISTA Business, SP2 Both 32 bit Both running Norton Internet Security 2011, including firewall Linksys WRT54GL router V1.1, connected to DSL The external HD is configured to share over the network. I use it to move files between the twp computers, and to access the Internet. It has been working fine for about 3 years. Everything is still working, except that the speed of transfer, either direction, between the laptop and the external HD has dropped to nearly zero. Files that used to take a minute or so to transfer now literally take hours, and depending on the software, may time out. The problem is not so much the speed over the network, but that the data is only sent in short bursts, with long, many seconds, delays between. As the file progresses, the process gets worse. Typically, it takes as long to send the last 10 % as the first 90%. In the past, the data was sent in a continuous stream. The access between the laptop and the Internet is still fine. I am in a rural area, and have verified that there is no other WiFi to interfere. Using my backup program, I have rolled both my computers back to a time when everything was working. The problem still exists. That seems to point to the router. I have flashed the most recent firmware and reconfigured, but not help. Google turns up lots of hits, but nothing that fits this. Any suggestions on what to do next? For now, I am just swapping the USB drive physically. Alan

Try to reset the router and reconfigure it.
Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.
Change the MTU size to 1365. Save the settings.
Go to Wireless tab and click on Advanced wireless settings. Change the Beacon Interval to 75, RTS and fragmentation threshold to 2304. Save the settings. Power cycle the router and see if that helps you.
Disable or turn OFF the firewall or Anti-virus software on your computer.

  • Transferring Music Between Computers With Ipod (Very Unique Situation)

My Ipod has about 300+ songs on it that aren't on my old desktop (Windows)and I would like to know if I can get those 300 songs off the Ipod and onto my new MacBook Pro. I looked at the tutorial for how to do this and I saw two problems I would need to address. The first is the guide says something about not being able to move the files from a PC to a Mac and the second is it talks about updating the files on the ipod which I can't do since the files I want to find aren't on there. Can I move these files without updating the Ipod? Oh and by the way I moved all the other files over to the MacBook.

There's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are also a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. I use Senuti but check the others out and choose whichever you are happy with.
    Senuti Mac Only
    iPodRip Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
    iPod.iTunes Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
There is also a new function in iTunes 7 under File, "Transfer Purchases from iPod" which transfers iTMS purchases. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting to your MacBook and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod will appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • Transferring Ical between computers

I have recently transferred all data from an old Macbook to my new Macbook Pro using firewire. Unfortunately the bug that was in ical was also transferred and so will not sync with Mobile Me. I have returned the old Macbook back to factory settings using the installation disks so there is now a good copy of ical on the old machine. I now want to transfer the good ical to my new Macbook Pro, can this be done using firewire or any other means? If not how can I fix my ical?

Just what it says - open System Preferences, click on Mobile Me, and in the Advanced tab there should be an option to reset your sync data.

  • My MAIL folder will not copy between computers via a portable drive

For a year, I've copied my MAIL folder in User/Library folder, and dropped it into the same folder. Though this process took about 10 minutes, I never had any trouble. The two computers are a G4 PowerBook and an G5 iMac. Now, I get error messages and the mail must be manually copied. I'm not sure if this began after the 10.4.7 upgrade or not. There are lots of error messages and delays and it takes about 2 hours to successfully copy everything.
    1. What could be going on?
    2. Is there an easier way to keep each computer current?

When transferring my MAIL folder from the office to my laptop at home, I quit Mail, drag the MAIL folder to my portable LaCie drive, and copy it. I also copy from the laptop and bring the LaCie to work. This worked fine for a long time until I started getting error messages in the midst of transferrin the folder from the portable drive to either computer. It's possible that the problem lies with the portable drive and not with either of the computers. So I've just erased that drive and will try again. I have already verify/repaired both computers.

  • Transfering files between computers

I have just ordered an iMac G5 1.9 ghz 17" computer and need to transfer my files from my eMac 700 to the new iMac G5. I also ordered a firewire male to male cable for the transfer. Any suggestions for how to do it so that, other than system software, all my programs and data will be duplicated? I have Drive Genius 1.1.5 and also use SuperDuper for my backups.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Since you are backed up, you can use the Migration Assistant on the new machine:

when hooked up to the old machine with the Firewire cable you mentioned.

  • Transferring profiles between computers via time machine

This may be a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway.  My new MBPR is one of the ones with a faulty battery in the 100k+ thread below, and Apple agreed to send me a brand new one.  The problem is, they're not sending it until they receive the defective one back.  I need to migrate over the profile to this new computer.  Files aren't my concern, as they're all backed up - but my profile and network settings are.
In my company, our Mac "specialist" took a new job, and they're in the process of trying to replace him.  So, I don't want to go through the nightmare of reconfiguring the network settings on the new machine.
But, if getting a new machine is the only option - is it possible to restore that sort of thing from a HD backup, the same way that you would migrate in a direct connection from computer to computer?

Make a Time Machine backup of your current computer. When the new computer arrives, use Setup Assistant to restore the Time Machine backup of your old computer to your new computer. Your new computer will then be identical to your old computer...network settings and all.

  • Question on Transfering Music Between Computers

I have read the article on using the iPod as a harddrive and transferring to a new computer...but there's still a couple things I'm not clear about.
    1. If I wanted to tranfer my iTunes library to a new computer, I would first transfer all the music to my iPod, then, in the new computer, make sure Syncing is off, and then simply transfer purchases from iPod? I got confused in the article where it reads: "If you've erased the iTunes library on your computer, there's no way to use the Finder or My Computer to copy the media from your iPod to reconstitute the library on your computer." Is this simply saying the only way to restore the library is to use the "transfer purchases from iPod" option or re-burn and buy all my music?
    2. If I purchase a song from another computer and load it to my iPod, will the song be erased when I hook my iPod to my home computer if it syncs before I use the "Transfer purchases from iPod" option?
    Matt

    can anyone help here?

  • Transferring Printers Between Computers

I just finished setting a new Retina MBP up from a Time Machine Backup, and printers were not transferred.  On the source machine, updated to 10.9.2, there are 7 printers, however on the destination machine, running 10.9.5, no printers copied over.  Is there a way to export printers from the source and import them into the destination or some other method of copying printers from one computer to another in Mavericks?

I have no idea if that is possible or if it is done with Migration Assistant.
Seems like it would be faster to just Add the printers.
