Will update from Tiger affect Automatic Software Update?

Hi guys.
It's my first question here. I purchased a MacBook approx 3 years ago from Apple Store which got Tiger(10.4.11) installed.
I would like to update to Snow Leopard because I need to upgrade from Adobe CS3 to CS5. My question is if I buy the Snow Leopard disc from Apple Store and upgrade from Tiger will automatic software update and other stuff work?
Appreciate your help.

If you are asking if Software Update will automatically update Snow Leopard & other Apple-supplied software to the latest versions during or immediately after the upgrade, the answer is no. The upgrade should preserve whatever preferences you set for Software Update in Tiger, so depending on them you may see no automatic update notifications, notifications only after the interval for checks you have set has elapsed, or whatever.
Remember that it is highly recommended that you backup your HD, or at least your important data, before applying any upgrade or update. If you do that, you may want to run Software Update as soon as you verify that the upgrade went as expected, & let it recommend & install all the updates your system needs to bring it up to date.

  • Will upgrading from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard delete programs?

Sorry if this is a stupid question or answered a million times before, but will upgrading from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard stop my existing programs (PhotoShop, Office etc) from running? I've got an Intel MacBook but I've never installed a new OS myself, so any tips gratefully received! Thank you.

You will lose the ability to work in any Classic OS applications that ran under system 9.
If I were you, before upgrading do yourself a favor and purchase an external hard drive that you can "clone" your Mac to. If possible, a large enough drive that you can have 2 partitions. In one you would clone your current system and apps. Then after the upgrade, clone again your updated system to the other partition as a emergency backup.
With the clone of your current set up, if need be you can rebbot to it so that you can use any of your "old" applications.

  • Will moving from Tiger to Leopard speed up or slow down my Dual 1.25GHz G4?

I'm currently running Mac OS X 10.4.11. If I upgrade to 10.5.8 (which I believe to be the final version of Leopard) do people feel that overall my Mac will run (& feel as if it's running) more quickly or more slowly?
My experience with Macs (17 years worth) tells me that, other things being equal, a newer OS normally slows down a given set of hardware. Also, according to the graphic on this page, the guts of Leopard appear to be very similar to Tiger. However I'm hoping against the odds that in this case Leopard might give me a speed boost.
I can't think of any features that Leopard has that Tiger doesn't that I'd like to use or that I feel I'm missing out on. It's just a possible speed boost I'm after, along with compatibility with the odd utility etc. that requires 10.5 or higher.
My main application usage at the moment is as follows: Microsoft Entourage 2008 (version 12.2.7) for email (although this may change - see my Topic here), Safari 4.1.3 for web browsing (& also occasionally Firefox 3.6.12), iTunes 9.2, QuickTime Player 7.6.4, and also more demanding creative software - primarily Adobe's Creative Suite CS2 (although I'll probably be upgrading to CS3 in the next few months) and occasionally things like Final Cut Pro 5.0.4.
    Many thanks.

Leopard makes a few improvements in performance over Tiger especially in the graphics and video area. Otherwise you would not notice any changes in speed.

  • Will Upgrade from Tiger fix "Prohibited sign" and "Missing Folder" symbols.

Recently I have been having the problem on start up an dI haven't since been able to boot up properly in months...
So, I was wondering if upgrading to Leopard would fix the problem or is it time to replace in general.

There are never any guarantees, but the "missing folder" symbol means your existing installation is non-operational. The way to fix that is to erase the drive and reinstall OS X. Assuming there are no hardware problems your computer should return to normal.

  • I bought a used macbook pro from a friend. Software updates are available, but when I try to update, the computer asks for apple id and will only accept the former owner´s. How can I connect my macbook to my apple id?

I bought a used macbook pro from a friend. Software updates are available, but when I try to update, the computer asks for apple id and will only accept the former owner´s. How can I connect my macbook to my apple id?

The first thing you should do after acquiring a used computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the gray installation discs that came with it. If you don't have the discs, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, it should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.

    Hi spiritentrep,
What Adobe software are you referring to? Are you using Acrobat? You should have no problems running Acrobat XI on Yosemite, and as along as you have compatible scanner drivers for your Epson, you should be fine there as well.

  • IBook freezing at start up after Automatic Software Updates

Hello All! I am new here and this is the first major issue I have had with my iBook since it was purchased back in 2004. Not sure what is going on with it...
I installed all the Automatic Software Updates, as I have always done in the past, then I shut the computer down for the day instead of restarting it. Since it gives you those two options so I choose Shut down. Well, the next morning my husband went to turn the computer on and it gave him trouble but then it finally started up but then as the screen turning on, it was jumpy with lines shooting up and down like crazy. So we force restarted it and then nothing. We removed the battery to see if that would help and it did at least let us get to the log in screen, slowly, but it got us there. Then, it froze. Restart, login, froze. Restart, logged in successfully, froze on desktop screen.
Not sure what to do now. Can anyone help? Let me know if you need any additional questions answered and I will so my best to answer them.
Thank you in advance for your time and help,
    Kara

    Hello Kara,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion forums!
I installed all the Automatic Software Updates
Normally, after installing updates to your software, it is wise to run the Repair Permissions function of Disk Utility found in your Utilities folder.
It sounds like something got corrupted doing the updates/shutdown.
I would try booting to your install cd/dvd and run the Repair Disk function. This is different than Repair Permissions from your HD's Disk Utility.
    To do this:
Startup from your install cd/dvd while holding down the "c" key.
When the installer splash screen appears, ignore it, and go directly to the Installer Menu in your top Apple Menus and select Disk Utility.
When Disk Utility from the Install disk opens select your HD in the left pane and then select the First Aid Tab if not already selected and then click on Repair Disk button. If it finds errors it cannot repair you may need a more robust Disk Repair utility such as Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro.
If Disk Utility reports the disk has been repaired quit the Disk Utility and then quit the installer and reboot and see if you can now login normally and your desktop appears (unfrozen).
If it does startup normally, open Disk Utility from the HD and run the Repair Permissions function.
post back if you cannot boot to the install cd/dvd and run Repair Disk or if you have further comments or questions,

  • Neither iPad or iphone 4S will update from 5.01 to 5.1

Neither my iPad 2 or my iPhone 4S will update from OS 5.01 to 5.1.  On my iPad, when I go to Settings, General, Software Update I get the ipad error message: Unable to Check for Update Now - An eror occurred while checking for a software update.
The iPad and iPhone have been set to automatically backup up to iCloud and have been backing up automatically every day.
I tried connecting to my iTunes on my iMac running 10.6.8, but I get the error message "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPad. The network connection could not be established."
My internet connection is fine as well as wireless.  And I have no other USB devices connected, the latest versions of iMac software (white iMac 10.6.8) and iTunes (10.6 build 40), and have rebooted both the iMac and iPad with always the same result and messages.
For some reason, neither one of my devices seems to be able to download the 5.1 update.
Any advice?  Apple's "more information" link on the error message doesn't really say much except to check for the above things I've mentioned.
    Thanks!

I found the above instructions on another discussion thread and so changed the second of my two DNS settings to the first address provided above and both the iPad and iPhone then were able to update to 5.1 without issue.
Judging from the number of "thank you" posted there it seems like changing the DNS settings is the solution to the 5.1 update issues.

I think you mean you are replacing your Airport Extreme with a Time Capsule. Time Machine is software integrated into OS X 10.5 & 10.6 used to automatically backup a system to an external HD. Time Capsule is an Airport Extreme that has a hard disk integrated into it that can be used for storage or  as a Time Machine backup drive.
Because you are currently on Tiger 10.4.x you can backup to a external HD using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Having a backup is very wise before doing any major system update. After  you have created the backup and have successfully upgraded to Snow Leopard you can still use the external HD for many things. The strategy I'd recommend is to use the new Time Capsule as your Time Machine backup and then use the external HD as backup using SuperDuper or CCC. Redundant backups is wise because backups can (and do) fail too! In addition both SD and CCC are bootable clones, this is useful in that if your internal HD crashes you can boot from a cloned drive and continue working until the internal HD is replaced.
Below are some links to some articles from MacWorld, I would recommend reading them where you find a common theme, redundant backups. Backup Plan I, Backup Plan II & Backup Plan III.

  • Updating from Tiger to Snow Leopard without buying the Mac Box Set

Is it possible to update from Tiger to Snow Leopard without buying the Mac Box Set? My sister already has iLife 09 so I could borrow it and simply buy Snow Leopard. Is that possible or would it still violate the licensing agreement?

Did you read item C from the license link you posted (underline was added for emphasis)?
Leopard Upgrade Licenses. If you have purchased an Upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard license, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License, you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-branded computer _as long as that computer has a properly licensed copy of Mac OS X Leopard already installed on it._ If you have purchased a Family Pack Upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard license, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License, you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on up to a maximum of five (5) Apple-branded computers at a time as long as those computers are located in the same household (as defined above), are used by persons who occupy that same household, and each such computer has a properly licensed copy of Mac OS X Leopard already installed on it. The Family Pack Upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard License does not extend to business or commercial users.
The OP asked about using the upgrade (and, obviously, try to avoid buying the box set) to move from OS X 10.4 to OS X 10.6. I mentioned the license agreement to allow the OP to make their own decision.

  • Scheduling specific time of day for automatic software updates

How can one schedule a specific time of day (i.e. between 11:01 pm to 5.59 am when I have unlimited download availability) for an iMac to search for automatic software updates? System preferences only offer frequency, but no time option. If it is possible to schedule a specific time, will invoking the feature override the sleep function, wake up the machine and perform the software update and then let the machine go back to "sleep?" Thank you for all your help.

to clarify barney's suggestion, the following terminal command will download all available updates and put them in your Downloads folder.
    softwareupdate -d --all
so what you need to do is this.
    1. turn off automatic software update in software update system preferences.
    2. make a cron or a launch daemon to run the above terminal command periodically at the time of your choosing. to make a launch daemon I recommend using lingon http://tuppis.com/lingon/
The daemon will only run if the computer is not asleep at the scheduled time so you might want to set to to wake/start shortly before that. this is done in system preferences->energy saver->schedule.
to install the updates once they are downloaded double-click on the pkg files and follow the instructions.

  • Can't find mails anymore after update from Tiger to Leopard

I've just updated my IMac from Tiger to Leopard (OSX 10.5.6).
After opening the Mail program I just see the menu bar (no window for the postbox).
When I open the postbox via the menu bar, the box is just empty. Are my mails gone? Where can I find or restore them?
    Thanks for help,
    Vanillia

Let's force an overall reindexing via the removal of the Envelope Index. Note the special instructions when forcing the reindexing of IMAP or Exchange accounts in the following:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/3.0/en/14019.html
This will force the reindexing of all the POP mailboxes and all On My Mac mailboxes. With regard to any IMAP accounts if you have any, the practical result of this action of removing the account folder, is that with the IMAP account still set up in the Preferences, Mail will connect to the IMAP server and create a new account folder, and while doing so will index the messages in the mailbox folders of the IMAP accounts on the server.
    Keep me posted.
